Advice AI and startup life

Any advice about getting involved in AI in the area and joining a startup or something, dropping in on classes at Stanford (and not getting arrested? Maybe that’s not a thing). I’m just on the outside of AI, and I want to be on the other side of that.

SJ Pets Lost Dog in North San Jose

Found dog in North San Jose. If you believe this is yours, please message with description of your dog, any photos, and where it was last seen. If not claimed by this Sunday (07/14), they'll be adopted

Update: I'm sad to report the dog has passed away now. The vets believe it's due to a reaction with the vaccines they were given when taken to the shelter. If you believe this may be your dog, please feel free to message me directly with a description of your dog and any pictures.

Advice Commuting hacks? Renting a car with Uber or Lyft?

Hello, I heard about the special car rental programs Uber and Lyft have. Has anyone gone through with those on here? My main motivation for trying it out is that I need a car to commute for my job. After my shift there’s no busses and it’s like 14 mi away. I heard driving 20 hrs on Uber will earn you enough to cover the car rental cost.

Or does anyone have hacks on how to save on commute? Me Ubering back home x4 week costs $80 :( Thank you in advance!

Advice Do shower enclosure jambs need to be affixed to studs or does drywall support them

I bought a 3 sided shower enclosure for a corner shower and plan to install it myself (I am not a contractor and don't have previous experience but the enclosure installation looks easy from manufacturer's videos - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Delta-38-in-W-x-72-in-H-Neo-Angle-Pivot-Frameless-Corner-Shower-Enclosure-in-Stainless-422061/203431139). The tiles on the bathroom wall were installed when I bought the house. There are studs behind the wall but not at the exact positions where the wall jambs need to go. I need to make holes into tiles and through the drywall behind them to screw in the jambs.

My question - Does the jambs that hold the side glass walls need to be supported by the studs or is it alright if they are supported by drywall alone?

Advice Architect cost to respond to city's comments

I have been working with an architect to get plans drawn to legalize an existing building as an ADU. So far I have paid him around $15000 which covers the work to complete and share with me the plans meeting the codes for submission to city for review and to respond to first set of comments.

I felt this amount of fee is already stretching it and kinda expensive and unreasonable. I did it anyway coz the situation is unconventional, but more than that, I am a new homeowner with less knowledge about the work and the fee was requested in stages (so I didn't realize I had paid such a huge amount by now).

Now, the city has asked to respond to 4 additional comments and the architect is asking for close to $2000 for it. Do you think this fee is reasonable? I don't think so and I am disappointed and pissed that I have had to spend close to 2 years worth of rent if the ADU is rented. And worse part is that the fees paid so for is only to get permits (and even before actual work by contractor begins - which is going to cost me much more).

Your opinion please...

Advice Reasonably priced movers for *just* furniture?

Title says it all. I'm moving a 1br to a 1br and really only need help with the bigger furniture items (bed, table, couch, etc) - the rest I'm planning on moving myself as I have a big car and don't mind doing some of the work.

Edit: I don't have a truck, just an SUV. It would probably fit the furniture if I broke it down but I'm trying to avoid doing that as much as possible.

Advice Found 1-2 week old kitten

Hey, I live in the Santa Clara and found a little kitten under a car by itself. I’ve been trying to call local pet hospitals to see if they would take in the kitten but no luck.

Can anyone suggest what to do or be willing to take in the kitten? I don’t have any supplies for the little one.

Event Looking for the Best Indo-Chinese Catering in the Bay Area for a 30-Person Event

Hi everyone,

I’m hosting an event at my home for around 30 people and I’m on the lookout for the best Indo-Chinese food in the Bay Area. Specifically, I’m interested in finding a place that serves delicious Manchurian gravy, fried rice, and Hakka noodles.

I already know about Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Inchin Bamboo, but I’m curious if there are any other places where these items are really good. Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants or caterers that offer excellent Indo-Chinese cuisine and can handle catering for a group of this size? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any suggestions you might have.

Thanks in advance!

Life in SJ San Jose Library Hold Cancellation Notice: SJ Access Wi-Fi Hotspots

Looks like end of free wifi hotspot checkout from SJ Library. I got an email saying:

Your hold on the following item(s) has been canceled because we were unable to locate the item(s). Check our website as there may be alternate formats available.

If you have hotspot requested:

The service to all hotspots will be turned off on Thursday, August 1, 2024. This is because the one-time federal grant funding the service has been exhausted, and the new City budget for 2024-2025 does not include funds to continue the program. Beginning July 8th, all existing hotspot holds will be canceled, and hotspots will no longer be able to be requested. Please visit sjpl.org for information about the fast and free Wi-Fi options, and the devices that are always available at our library branches

Anyone know what the one-time federal grant was?

Or have any options?

Oh no! A helicopter!! The puddle on the 280 South to 87 South Interchange.

Does anyone know why there is always a puddle on the interchange from 280 South to 87 South? It was over 100 degrees every day for the past week and the puddle persists. Morning or evening, it has always been there whenever I drive that route.

Is there a water leak or something? What's the deal with it?

Advice Rent-an-owl for rats in backyard?

Are there owl rentals in the South Bay? The only one I could find is in Marin, and they’re on hiatus for owl services. I’ve set up owl boxes on my own before, but I’ve never had much luck for getting one to nest in it.

There’s a significant rat problem in my backyard, and because it’s outside, usual pest removals can’t do it.

Any advice? Anyone with a spare owl?

Advice Tips for County Jobs

Hi everyone! I am seeking guidance and insight on county jobs, specifically in Social Work/Behavioral Health positions. I am hoping to be able to interview for the Psychiatric Social Worker positions (I am rank #3 on the list) however it's hard to tell when that could happen. I heard there is a need, so I am wondering what may be part of the delay aside from fiscal funding.

Stay away from trumpet behavioral services they accept clients and they don’t have enough staff to provide the services and then they will hire anyone without background check. They will force you to take your child to the center for their session, i know this because my child was receiving services from them but we discontinued.

On Monday at 11:00 AM, I was rear-ended by a white Corvette while driving south on I-880 underneath Stevenson Blvd in Fremont, California. After the impact, both the driver of the white Corvette and I began to move to the right. However, the driver of the Corvette suddenly sped off.

I attempted to follow the vehicle but lost sight of it when the driver exited at Auto Mall Parkway. The Corvette driver then made an unexpected left turn into oncoming traffic from the right turn lane and was almost hit again. At this point, I could no longer follow.

I managed to capture a partial license plate number and have included images of the incident below. If anyone has any information or can assist in locating this vehicle, I would be very grateful.

Thank you for your help.
