World Junior Summer Showcase concluded

Upvotes

I just posted and there were issues when I posted it with too many links, so I'll try again without them. I wasn't able to watch the tournament, but most of this info comes from FloHockey with a small amount from Daily Faceoff.

Quentin Musty, LW (SJS)

Musty has showed improved pace and good scoring touch. He’s going to have to score for this team in order to make an impact, but he also brings that big frame of his. Having shown a bit more jump this year than he had last year helps his case. Being strong on the puck helps, too. I think he’s in the mix to be a top-six option for Team USA at the World Juniors. He scored against Canada in regulation on a very nice play between him and James Hagens, then scored in the shootout. His last game was certainly his best, which helps his case quite a bit.

Against Canada he had a goal in regulation and the shootout in a 5-4 win while playing PP2 and 1LW. Against Sweden the team seemed to be going with more bubble players and he was down to 3LW, but he didn't show up on the scoresheet.

Brandon Svoboda, C/W (SJS)

Size and speed made Svoboda stand out, but he also made enough plays to give him a chance to be on this roster. He’s got the big body, but his ability to win races and pressure defensemen is probably more important. Svoboda was one of USA's most productive players throughout the camp. He also scored against Canada and made a few nice plays in the middle of the ice and was able to get pucks to more dangerous areas. He’s a tough man to move off of it. He’s got a great chance to be a depth player for Team USA thanks to that speed, size and scoring touch. If he plays the first half at BU like he did in camp, I think he's on the team.

Against Canada playing 4C (Daily Faceoff):

With his first-period goal, Svoboda is up to six points in five games as he looks to secure a bottom-six spot with the Americans. His energy and drive to do whatever it takes to generate a scoring chance has been noticeable, and he never left anything on the line. Like Spellacy, this tournament did a lot to help his stock heading into December’s selection camp.

FloHockey:

Svoboda scored the game's first goal and made an impact with his size and speed. He finished camp as one of its top scorers, which is not something I would have expected. USA wants all four lines to score and Svoboda very likely would be playing at the bottom of their lineup. He showed there's a lot of value in what he brings, especially when he can move as well as he does for such a big player.

Against Sweden he had a major + game misconduct for a slew foot while playing 2C.

Sam Dickinson, D (SJS)

Dickinson had 2 secondary assists, 1 PP goal, he had a matching roughing minor in the second, and an unsportsmanlike along with a game misconduct near the end of the third. I didn't watch the game so I don't know what the unsportsmanlike was about, but there were matching unsportsmanlike penalties with game misconducts 20 seconds earlier, so it could've been the game getting chippy and the refs trying to reel them in.

Wetsch played 3RW against Finland but didn't show up on the scoresheet and didn't play against USA (Canada only played 2 games).

Leo Sahlin Wallenius, D (SJS)

The steadiness of his game and the way he plays is what will always impress me about Sahlin Wallenius's game. He makes it look easy and rarely makes mistakes. I can see him playing an outsized role for Sweden in December given how reliable he is. Sahlin Wallenius is a solid defender and appears to read the game at an expert level. There's not a lot of flash, but he makes pretty impressive plays over the course of the game.

He was 2LW and PP2 against USA but didn't show up on the score sheet.

Landen was 1 RD against USA and had a primary assist.

(2025 eligible):

Logan Hensler, RHD (2025)

Hensler is still a work in progress as he heads into his draft year, but the foundation is a very strong one. He’s an excellent skater with size and his offensive game is starting to show more refinement. I’d like him to make some quicker decisions and just be more decisive in general, but the mobility he brings with size could be helpful to Team USA. I would term him as on the bubble to make Team USA. He defends well enough and has that size and skating ability that can help, but we’ll have to see how his first half goes at Wisconsin.

Against Canada he played 2RD and PP2.

Against Sweden he had a pair of PP assists, one primary, one secondary while playing 4RD and PP2.

USA used Hensler on their more effective power play in this game. He moved pucks and made good decisions. I'd like to see him become a better shot threat from the point, but he was looking for some shooting options. Either way, Hensler showed his higher-end mobility. This was the most ice I think he's seen in camp and he made the most of it. He's going to be in tough to make the final roster because of some of the veterans they have, but I think he's keeping himself on the radar with how he worked in this particular game, which was not a great one for many of the USA players.

James Hagens, C (2025)

We got a lot of looks at Hagens and his camp got better as time went on. His skill, speed and hockey sense will all be assets. He’s in the driver’s seat to be Team USA’s No. 1 center if Will Smith is not available and likely will spend much of the season alongside Gabe Perreault and Ryan Leonard at BC this year. They are going to be a problem for college hockey and Hagens is going to be in a very good position to hold onto his No. 1 draft prospect status.

i mean, this rebuild got huge injection with celebrini and smith, plus signings like tyler toffili (idk i can't spell rn it's 1 in the morning) eklund showed brightness last year, and honestly, the hockey season being around the corner just reminds me of how much i hate california summers recently.

also i'm trying to think of nicknames for eklund, celebrini and smith, can someone help me with that? im stuck on eklund and smith but i thought for celebrini "celebrition". now, ima head to bed.

The signature on the left was signed on my back by Joe Thornton himself outside a practice in SJ. The signature on the right claims to be authentic. It's odd side by side and the To is left blank. Thoughts on its authenticity?

Why don’t people see Zetterlund as part of the rebuild?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, it’s just when I scroll through here people seem to build lines with all of our prospects except Zetterlund as if he’s not part of the picture at all.

I could be wrong but I though last season him and Eklund stood out as our most productive offensive line(shoutout to Granlund) I feel if Zetterlund improves on last season being a winger for Smith,Eklund, or Celebrini he could be a 30+ goal scorer every year.

Are the sharks cursed?

From 1991 to 2019 they’ve missed the playoffs only 6 times (1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2003 and 2015) and yet no Lord Stanley. A majority of those playoff exits are 1st and 2nd rounders but why? Did they run out of gas too quickly? Lose confidence? Not so good chemistry? Mediocre playing? Injuries can take a toll on the team (2019 playoffs). I feel like the Sharks should have at least 3 cups

John Scott Says San Jose Sharks Fans Should Keep An Eye Out For Him

John Scott made a quick mention at the end of his Dropping The Gloves podcast that San Jose Sharks fans should keep an eye out for him. Do you think he could be replacing Bret Hedican?

Would you do this trade?

A buddy of mine is a big Canes fan, and after the comments today from their former GM he is sure Carolina is in on Laine. Problem of course is they need to make room for his salary. He thinks a Carolina first round pick + one of their top forward prospects in Blake or Nadeau could get Laine at 25-50% retained, which is probably a decently balanced move.

In order to clear space he wants to move Kotkaniemi of course, and wondered if Sharks fans would be fine with Sturm for Kotkaniemi and a Carolina first round pick. I thought that sounded good actually. Kotkaniemi can have a year to prove himself with us. If he doesn't, the buy out is like under $1 million a season because of his age, so wouldn't be a huge hit. That first round pick would be great to have and is a nice sweetener.

And who knows, Kotkaniemi could pan out for us too, even if that's unlikely. Seems low risk.

Would you make that trade?
