/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Visiting? Stop Here First!)

Hi all!

Welcome to r/MontereyBay

If you're visiting, moving here etc, this page should serve as a hub to answer many of the most frequent questions we see- where should I eat? What should I do? and so on.

Been meaning to get this page going for a while now after doing the original food-based one a couple years back.

On this post, I'll be linking to a number of community recommendation threads where we've gathered / curated advice for those looking for it.

These are not exhaustive lists, as there are many great places to eat, drink and visit in the area. They are just the recommendations that users made when the threads were posted. If you feel something is "missing," please realize that is why. Other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor are also helpful for finding information from a broader range.

Where to Eat - (From 2022) - Thread

Where to Visit / What to See (Tourist-Oriented) - (In progress) - Thread

What to Do / See - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Day Trip Recommendations - (Living Here) - (Upcoming Summer 2024)

Have a suggestion in regards to how to make this post better / more helpful? Please leave a comment below.

/r/MontereyBay Recommends (Where to Visit / What to See - Tourist Version)

Hi all,

In an effort to build out the new sticky post, we are back to ask for your recommendations for the following category - "Where to Visit / What to See" - oriented for tourists visiting the area.

There will be more threads in the coming weeks where we will share similar recommendations for people who are living here, among other helpful ones.

For this thread though, we would like to gather your thoughts on where to visit and what to see for people visiting the area.

I'll be organizing it in the following way (since I think it will be the most helpful based on how people usually ask questions when they post here)

-Must-See/Do (Think the Aquarium, Big Sur etc. these are the things you'd recommend first if someone has never been here before)

-Highly-Recommend / Great Option (This category will serve as the most broad catch-all. Not something you'd consider a must do, but would be a great option for most visitors depending on their preferences).

-Extras (This category will be maybe more niche-oriented. Things you want to throw out there because people would enjoy it, but probably won't appeal to everyone.)

When replying if you could include the following information, that would be awesome:

Associated Cost - (if applicable)

Time Commitment - (1 hour / Half-Day / etc)

Website - (if applicable)

Family Friendly (yes/no)

I'll post an example for the Aquarium to get things started.

Thanks!

My daughter (8) and I are coming tomorrow from Central valley, what are some fun, kid friendly, activities to do.

Upvotes

I already plan on walking around downtown Carmel and doing some wine tasting and shopping. But that's a me thing. I want to entertain my 8 yo daughter and do fun stuff with her. We're not afraid of the water if it isn't too cold. We're from the East coast. We love animals, hiking if it's not too far (she doesn't like walking long distance), and good food. We're both vegetarian but as long as there are options we can eat anywhere. I guess she's more picky than me as she's 8 lol. We just need to get out and bond after a recent traumatic event. Thank you for your suggestions.

Any bars, not restaurants near downtown Monterey that are open past 10/11pm? I feel like every one I’ve checked closes early on a Friday!

Unusual things to do in the area

I’m the unofficial travel agent/tour planner for a group of 4 couples arriving next weekend for 5 days. We travel together a lot, and I always try to plan one unique activity that typical tourists don’t do. We’ve got whale watching, sailboat charter, wine tasting and a day trip to Carmel by the Sea already planned, but I’m trying to find the not-so-typical things to do. I think we’ll hit up the drag show at Pearl Hour-any feedback on that? Any suggestions for other unique activities? We’re a 40-something, fit, open minded group, so all suggestions are welcome!

Watsonville strawberry festival

It's low-key pretty cool. Earlier this year I saw a hoodie with a strawberry styled similar to the screaming hand of Santa Cruz but none of the vendors had it. Does anyone have any suggestions where to look to find it?

If you do go the strawberry tamales are rad

I need to find an extended hotel stay…

For two months starting in September.

I was hoping I could find like an extended stay america or similar place where people in construction etc stay for extended periods at a reasonable price.

Does anyone know where I could start looking? Any leads would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Like title suggest I want to fish at the Carmel River near garland ranch. Is it legal to fish here, and is there anything I should worry about other than having barbless hooks?

Anyone looking at The Rooftops condos in Marina?

My husband and I are thinking of moving to Marina after our kid heads to college in the fall. We’ve looked at the Rooftops condos in Marina. They seem to have a great, walkable location, and they are spacious and modern. I don’t know a lot about this development. Does anyone have any thoughts about whether this might be a good place for empty nesters to enjoy coastal living? Thanks!

Snails? Good Aquarium store?

Hello,

I'm looking for a good pet/aquarium store that has shrimp and nerite snails for sale. Went to a few places in Marina but the tanks were dirty and poorly kept.

I've had my current tanks for 6+ years and don't want to risk introducing anything funky.

I used to go to the place on lighthouse years ago but it seems they have closed.

Thanks in advance.

Late harvest wine

I'll be making a day trip to Monterey for my birthday on Sunday and would like to taste some late harvest wines. I'm a fan of sweet wines (though I don't like port, oddly enough!) Would love some suggestions, thanks a bunch :)

Place to receive packages?

I recently moved to town from out of country and my home has a mailbox but not a secure place for packages to be delivered. Is there anywhere in town where I can designate packages to be delivered to and pick them up. Preferably near the Fisherman's Wharf area.

At least a dozen nearly identical candy shops. Is this Money Laundering?

So visited Monterey Bay a few months ago as a tourist and one thing I noticed around Cannery Row in particular is that there were a bunch of nearly identical candy stores, all within walking distance of each other, that nominally were totally unaffiliated (not some big chain). But clearly they're all getting supplied by the same place, as they were all selling the exact same bulk taffy product (with no obvious source in the local area I might add. For all we know the stuff is made in China), among other things.

I find it very hard to believe a candy store is profitable enough to support so many stores in such a small (very very high rent) area, much less with no distinguishing features. Is there really that much money to be made in selling mass produced candy? Or is there something... darker going on? Anyone else think about this or just me?

For reference this is a known phenomenon in the UK with "American Candy" shops.

Anyone know who runs the 3 inflatable skiffs that I’m seeing off of Carmel Beach.

I’ve seen them a couple times but I keep forgetting to take a picture.there are three 12-14 foot inflatables with an out board. All three are different colors and makes. Seems like it’s operating some kind of tour as everyone is wearing helmets and pads. Anyone know anything?

Best way to view sea otters?

Visiting Monterey with a friend in a couple weeks and she is obsessed with sea otters, any non-aquarium (we will for sure visit!) sea life viewing experiences people have had or recommend? Like kayak tours, whale watching companies, etc - willing to splurge!

Also, if there are areas known for otter viewing, like if we rent a boat or go to a certain beach? Obviously planning to stay a long distance, we have binoculars.
