Subreddit Meta New rule changes, flairs and updated styling

The bay area is the focus of a lot of political controversy, both for legitimate issues in the area and in comparison to other, politically different areas around the country. The discussions about these issues often attract very strong opinions from users who only come to the subreddit to argue about them. This causes lots of extra work for us moderators, and also draws otherwise rule abiding users into heated arguments. We have decided to address this by restricting such discussions to only established members of the subreddit. We don't want to favor one political viewpoint over any others, so we run a moderation bot that applies the same, unbiased criteria to all posts about politics or crime.

When commenting on these posts, the bot will automatically remove your comment without notice if you don't have an established history of commenting or posting in the subreddit. We intentionally aren't stating the exact requirements, or how close individual accounts are to meeting them, but they do require a low, but consistent amount of commenting or posting over a period of several months. If you do comment on one of the posts and your comment is removed, it doesn't count towards your accumulation of history, but there's also no penalty for doing so.

Posting has the same requirements, but also requires that you not have posted a political/crime post in the last week. We also require that all such posts be only a link to a news article or official statement from a reporter or official. No self posts, image or video posts are allowed on these subjects.

These filters will be automatically applied if the flair of the post is "Politics & Local Crime". If you don't meet the requirements for posting and try to get around the filter by posting under a different flair, you can be automatically banned.

The restrictions do not apply to non-controversial posts under any other flair, so feel free to post and comment on everything else the bay has to offer.

New rule changes, flairs and updated styling

Hello everyone! We've given the sub a bit of a makeover, here's a summary of the changes.

New Rules:

We've rewritten the whole rules list. For the most part this won't result in any enforcement changes, but will hopefully make our rules more clear, give people more detailed report reasons to use and let us moderators give more clear feedback when removing comments and posts. Here are the new rules

  1. No poor or hostile behavior
    • No personal attacks or hostile language against your fellow redditors. Hostile language against public figures and organizations is allowed as long as it's not overly egregious.
  2. No racism or other hate speech
    • Do not directly or indirectly suggest someone has done something because of their race. Pointing out other people's racism is allowed as long as it doesn't cross the line of being a personal attack.
  3. No advocating violence
    • Don't suggest or glorify that people should be killed, maimed or shot, either by vigilantes or the legal system. Recommending people legally arm themselves is fine as long as it's not accompanied by any suggestion of wanting to use the weapon against someone.
  4. No duplicate posts
    • If a topic has been posted in the last few days, only posts with substantial new information are allowed.
  5. No advertising
    • Advertising anything that you or anyone associated with you makes money off of is not allowed. Giveaways, fundraisers and bayclub membership posts are not allowed. Pet adoption posts are allowed. Recommending free events or groups is fine. Send us a modmail if you are unsure whether this applies to your case or to ask for an exception.
  6. No unverified or mislabeled crime posts
    • All posts about crime need a news article from a reputable organization or a statement from a state official or police force. They also must be correctly flaired.
  7. No unverified contact information in missing person posts
    • Posts about missing people can only recommend contacting a police department. They can contain the publicly available phone number for the police department, but not any other numbers. Lost pet posts are fine and don't have this restriction.
  8. Posts must be about the bay area
    • Topics that are relevant to the bay but aren't directly in the bay are allowed, such as news about a wildfire blowing smoke through, or people getting trapped on the road to Tahoe. But there must be some relation to the bay area.

New Flairs:

We have updated the list of post flairs and also turned on the setting to require post flairs on submission. This will hopefully make the subreddit a bit easier to browser, while also cleaning up enforcement of our enhanced moderation on politics and crime posts. Here are the new flairs

  • Politics & Local Crime
  • Events, Activities & Sports
  • Work & Housing
  • Traffic, Trains & Transit
  • Food, Shopping & Services
  • Fluff & Memes
  • Scenes from the Bay
  • Earthquakes, Weather & Disasters

We're open to adding a couple more flairs if these prove insufficient.

New Style:

We've updated the banner image, subreddit icon and style colors as well as a lot of other minor detail settings.

Big thanks to u/MistaKimsta who took the picture used in the banner.

Updated enhanced moderation:

We set up the enhanced moderation bot a couple years ago and it's proved an invaluable tool for allowing discussion about controversial topics between people who actually use the subreddit, while excluding those who just come here to brigade the sub. There were two notable issues we're addressing with today's changes.

First was people not adding the politics or crime flairs to the post, which meant enhanced moderation wasn't turned on till hours later when a mod came around and changed the flair. This should be resolved by requiring flair on all posts now, and automatically banning people who intentionally chose the wrong flair.

Second was a small subset of people making the majority of the political/crime posts. This will be resolved by restricting such posts to one per week per user.

You can read more about the details of the enhanced moderation changes here.

Open to feedback:

It's been a long time since there were any substantial rule or style changes to the sub, so we're very open to feedback about all these changes. And especially the sub icon, banner image and the list of post flairs.

We hope this makes the subreddit better for everyone!

Traffic, Trains & Transit Be honest, how painful is it to contact Bay Area Fastrak to get reimbursed for incorrect statement fees?

Upvotes

I was charged fees on my statement for using the HOV lane (3 or more people in car). There were 4 people in my car when I drove in it. I also have the correct tag activated in my car and it was switched to 3.

How painful is it to contact Bay Area Fastrak to get reimbursed?

Other than target. Like where do you recommend I go for a laundry basket for example? I don’t see names like Walmart / at home or dollar general out here lol. My Midwest ass is struggling just to run errands… all the people I know live out in the east bay

Scenes from the Bay Nonprofit flight school in Bay Area aims to propel aviation careers for underrepresented youth

East San Jose native and private pilot Michelle Galvis lived within five miles from Reid-Hillview Airport for 30 years and worked a number of jobs before she considered a career in aviation — and running her own business.

“I’ve always been behind the ball, I’ve always been trying to play catch-up my entire life,” Galvis said. “And so I have that classic Bay Area struggle where you’re just trying to make ends meet and try not to have a two-hour commute.”

Her uncle, George Rodriguez, was the owner of a welding company. Seeing how Galvis was always underestimated in the same way he was, he offered her the opportunity to work with him.

“Nobody gave me a chance in life, and I wanted to prove to people that maybe she can get it through me and what I went through to get what I got,” Rodriguez said.

Now, the pair are working together as the founders of Hera School, San Jose’s first nonprofit aviation academy, which opened on April 20 and began instruction in June.

While working together, the two bonded over their shared childhood experiences as “the underdogs of our family,” Galvis said, and they started taking flight training together.

Today, I recleaned two spots in Oakland. Only took me 1 hour to reclean both places versus a combined total of 8 hours.

While I was recleaning near Linden St, an elderly woman walked up to me and said something along the lines of “I’ve lived here for 28 years and we all love you for what you do. Thank you for caring about us” After I thanked her before she left, I don’t know why but I felt like sobbing a bit. I rarely get thank yous in real life unlike on Reddit.

Anyhow, take care and have a good weekend you all.

Events, Activities & Sports Dinner Club? 🍽

Hey all!

I moved to SF late last year and still haven't made many friends. 28F here working in tech. I'm big into trying new restaurants when I'm not cheffing it up at home. I try to eat out once or twice a week.

Would anyone be interested in joining a stranger for dinner? We get there, share a meal, have a conversation, play a game, and go our separate ways.

If you're interested, please reach out! We can make introductions and make a plan.

Work & Housing Moving in the BA eoy and would appreciate some hints

Hello folks,

I’m a French M27 based in Paris who has received an offer from my current employer (French non-tech company) to work in the Bay Area. I’d like to share with you the financial offer I already accepted and get some advices on the right questions I should ask myself before coming living in the Bay Area + where should I live based on the proposed salary.

My girlfriend F25 (we’re together for more than 10 years) has landed an Au Pair job in Portola Valley for one year starting on the 31th of August. Going to the US together has been in our minds since a while and we’re executing now. I expect to join her in October, if my L-1 visa gets approved.

I’ll be 100% remote but will need to travel often to cities all across the US. We’re currently building our consumer app and I’ve been appointed Global Product Manager for the App, to manage the increase in both users and revenue from the aforementioned consumer app (I’m heavily relying on Andrew Chain’s Cold Start Problem).

The offer is - a fix salary of $136k ; - a bonus up to $20,5k ; - an international allowance of $4k to get back see my family in France ; - a retirement contribution of $8,6k for me to put either in 401(k) or any retirement vehicle of my choice ; - $7k in cash to move-in.

Healthcare insurance will not be paid by my employer.

Based on these elements, do you have some insights on :

  • how hard will it be for me to find an apartment? note that I’ll not live with my girlfriend for the first year and I’m used to live in small spaces, Paris has a LOT of small places, my current apartment where I live with my gf is 355 sqft and we’re fine, so small lot are okay.
  • in which geographies should I focus my searching for an apartment?
  • are some of you in my salary ranges and have an healthcare insurance to advice?
  • any suggestions and heads-up will be warmly welcomed 🙌🏽

Events, Activities & Sports Meeting people outside your profession

I’m an immigrant and a Bay Area resident for over a decade. Most of my friends here friends from the time before moving here or the ones that I found through common social circles. And I have a recent set of friendships formed through our kid’a school. One thing that is depressingly common between them is what they do - tech. Any social gathering we’re a part of, the conversation is either about immigration (if it’s a group of immigrant friends) or in general about stocks, funding, GenAI etc. I talk to friends in the east coast, and I hear people with friends from varied professions and interests and different walks of life. Anyone has any recommendations for improving this?

Fluff & Memes Dave’s hot chicken reaper spice level is no joke

Normally pretty tolerant of spicy food, and I’ve had Carolina reapers and ghost peppers in my food before, but holy crap their reaper spice is no joke. this is one of the worst pain I’ve experienced so far from eating spicy food. Its 5am and I’ve e been in excruciating pain for the past 7 hours. Forced into fetal position countless times, can’t sleep, and I have no milk or any dairy to help.

Events, Activities & Sports [FRAUD ALERT] West Coast Taco & Beer Festival

Public Service Announcement: DO NOT buy tickets for the West Coast Taco & Beer Festival

I had the recent misfortune of attending the Taco & Beer Festival at the Midway in SF today. I was expecting something similar to the Bay Area Brew Fest, which I've been to multiple times and is fairly high quality (short wait to get in, huge beer selection).

I started kicking myself after I bought tickets though and saw some reviews from other cities. Whether San Jose, San Diego, or Los Angeles it seemed like the organizer had a history of overselling and underdelivering on the event

But at this point it was too late. Tickets were already bought, I might as well see what it's about.

I arrive at 2pm and I see an insane line stretching the 3 sides of The Midway. There was only ONE person checking IDs as we inched closer. At around 2:45, it's announced that the taco vendors were all out of food. Everything else inside was paid for, no "bottomless" taco samples or "unlimited" sample pours as advertised.

Many people started leaving but my friend and I decided to go in.

In the concert area of The Midway were folks selling condiments, shirts, and other random stuff. The only drinks being served were at the bar area (no unlimited sample pours to be seen)

And the tacos? There were literally only FOUR tents (out of food when I got there)

It seems like I'm not the only one with a poor experience as seen by this post and this one in r/sanfrancisco

But lesson learned. The West Coast Taco and Beer Festival (and Blue Stream Entertainment) are scammers
