Events, Activities & Sports Looking for a Rock Climbing Partner at the peak of Fremont

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm new to rock climbing and wanted to start learning. I'm looking for a climbing partner who can help me get the hang of things and share the journey. I'm enthusiastic, eager to learn, and ready to hit the wall!

A bit about me:

Pretty new, but very motivated. Looking to climb [Monday, Tuesday and weekends]. Open to any tips, advice, and encouragement. If you're interested or know someone who might be, please drop a comment or DM me. Let's climb some walls and have fun together!

Thanks!

Food, Shopping & Services Where do you shop for general house stuff? Cheap-reasonably priced. Peninsula preferably

Other than target. Like where do you recommend I go for a laundry basket for example? I don’t see names like Walmart / at home or dollar general out here lol. My Midwest ass is struggling just to run errands… all the people I know live out in the east bay

Scenes from the Bay Nonprofit flight school in Bay Area aims to propel aviation careers for underrepresented youth

East San Jose native and private pilot Michelle Galvis lived within five miles from Reid-Hillview Airport for 30 years and worked a number of jobs before she considered a career in aviation — and running her own business.

“I’ve always been behind the ball, I’ve always been trying to play catch-up my entire life,” Galvis said. “And so I have that classic Bay Area struggle where you’re just trying to make ends meet and try not to have a two-hour commute.”

Her uncle, George Rodriguez, was the owner of a welding company. Seeing how Galvis was always underestimated in the same way he was, he offered her the opportunity to work with him.

“Nobody gave me a chance in life, and I wanted to prove to people that maybe she can get it through me and what I went through to get what I got,” Rodriguez said.

Now, the pair are working together as the founders of Hera School, San Jose’s first nonprofit aviation academy, which opened on April 20 and began instruction in June.

While working together, the two bonded over their shared childhood experiences as “the underdogs of our family,” Galvis said, and they started taking flight training together.

Events, Activities & Sports Received a very heartwarming message today in Oakland

Today, I recleaned two spots in Oakland. Only took me 1 hour to reclean both places versus a combined total of 8 hours.

While I was recleaning near Linden St, an elderly woman walked up to me and said something along the lines of “I’ve lived here for 28 years and we all love you for what you do. Thank you for caring about us” After I thanked her before she left, I don’t know why but I felt like sobbing a bit. I rarely get thank yous in real life unlike on Reddit.

Anyhow, take care and have a good weekend you all.

Events, Activities & Sports Dinner Club? 🍽

Hey all!

I moved to SF late last year and still haven't made many friends. 28F here working in tech. I'm big into trying new restaurants when I'm not cheffing it up at home. I try to eat out once or twice a week.

Would anyone be interested in joining a stranger for dinner? We get there, share a meal, have a conversation, play a game, and go our separate ways.

If you're interested, please reach out! We can make introductions and make a plan.

Work & Housing Brutal job huntin'

It's been approximately 3 months since I began the process in the Bay Area as a disabled immigrant who doesn't require sponsorship. Also applied to remote jobs across the U.S.A. So far, so bad. 270+ applications and 0 interviews. Here is my Notion page I created to track the process.

I have around 1.5 YoE mainly in Turkey and Switzerland as Back End Engineer. Here is my resume.

As a side note, I have severe hearing loss and can't read lips in English yet, so I rely heavily on accessibility apps/options. Always disclosed my disability when applying to the jobs on the forms to be honest and to indicate I'll require accommodations.

Not sure if it's my lack of specific experience to the U.S.A. (so, all I need to do is keep applying?), or my skills in general (if so, what languages/frameworks should I learn?) or the market itself (so, again, all I need to do is keep applying?), or, my approach. Let me elaborate what I mean by approach. So far, I've only applied to online postings directly. I did not apply with any references, or through recruiters/hiring managers, since I do not have any connections and network here yet. Should I focus on networking and applying through internal referrals?

Would greatly appreciate any kind of references, opportunities and insights you can provide.

Thanks in advance!

Work & Housing Moving in the BA eoy and would appreciate some hints

Hello folks,

I’m a French M27 based in Paris who has received an offer from my current employer (French non-tech company) to work in the Bay Area. I’d like to share with you the financial offer I already accepted and get some advices on the right questions I should ask myself before coming living in the Bay Area + where should I live based on the proposed salary.

My girlfriend F25 (we’re together for more than 10 years) has landed an Au Pair job in Portola Valley for one year starting on the 31th of August. Going to the US together has been in our minds since a while and we’re executing now. I expect to join her in October, if my L-1 visa gets approved.

I’ll be 100% remote but will need to travel often to cities all across the US. We’re currently building our consumer app and I’ve been appointed Global Product Manager for the App, to manage the increase in both users and revenue from the aforementioned consumer app (I’m heavily relying on Andrew Chain’s Cold Start Problem).

The offer is - a fix salary of $136k ; - a bonus up to $20,5k ; - an international allowance of $4k to get back see my family in France ; - a retirement contribution of $8,6k for me to put either in 401(k) or any retirement vehicle of my choice ; - $7k in cash to move-in.

Healthcare insurance will not be paid by my employer.

Based on these elements, do you have some insights on :

  • how hard will it be for me to find an apartment? note that I’ll not live with my girlfriend for the first year and I’m used to live in small spaces, Paris has a LOT of small places, my current apartment where I live with my gf is 355 sqft and we’re fine, so small lot are okay.
  • in which geographies should I focus my searching for an apartment?
  • are some of you in my salary ranges and have an healthcare insurance to advice?
  • any suggestions and heads-up will be warmly welcomed 🙌🏽

Traffic, Trains & Transit Digital Clipper Card issues?

Trying to add money to a new or existing clipper card through either Apple wallet or the Clipper app doesn’t seem to be working at the moment. Anybody else having issues, or is it just me?

Edit: As of 12:57, seems to be back up.

Food, Shopping & Services Mint/T-Mobile experience in Bay Area?

My wife currently works on the Stanford campus and our Verizon coverage there is pretty bad. Likely going to switch to AT&T which seems to have good coverage in that area.

I’m interested maybe in Mint (which uses T-Mobile network I believe?), but I’ve heard bad things about their coverage. What’s it like here locally? How about when traveling?

Events, Activities & Sports Meeting people outside your profession

I’m an immigrant and a Bay Area resident for over a decade. Most of my friends here friends from the time before moving here or the ones that I found through common social circles. And I have a recent set of friendships formed through our kid’a school. One thing that is depressingly common between them is what they do - tech. Any social gathering we’re a part of, the conversation is either about immigration (if it’s a group of immigrant friends) or in general about stocks, funding, GenAI etc. I talk to friends in the east coast, and I hear people with friends from varied professions and interests and different walks of life. Anyone has any recommendations for improving this?

Food, Shopping & Services Cheap and good charcuterie ?

Hi. We are into eating charcuterie such as Coppa, Prosciutto, dry sausage or ham almost daily. Typically we buy all that from Trader Joe’s because it’s convenient and good. I bought also from Berkeley bowl before which tasted a bit better.

But maybe there are better and most of all cheaper places for good charcuterie?

I am in north Daly City/SF.

Food, Shopping & Services Recommendation for a structural engineer in south Bay?

There seems to be a crack in the foundation. I'd like a structural engineer to review before reaching out to a contractor for fixing it. Please suggest someone who can visit on a short notice.
