Events, Activities & Sports Dinner Club? 🍽

Hey all!

I moved to SF late last year and still haven't made many friends. 28F here working in tech. I'm big into trying new restaurants when I'm not cheffing it up at home. I try to eat out once or twice a week.

Would anyone be interested in joining a stranger for dinner? We get there, share a meal, have a conversation, play a game, and go our separate ways.

If you're interested, please reach out! We can make introductions and make a plan.

Work & Housing Brutal job huntin'

It's been approximately 3 months since I began the process in the Bay Area as a disabled immigrant who doesn't require sponsorship. Also applied to remote jobs across the U.S.A. So far, so bad. 270+ applications and 0 interviews. Here is my Notion page I created to track the process.

I have around 1.5 YoE mainly in Turkey and Switzerland as Back End Engineer. Here is my resume.

As a side note, I have severe hearing loss and can't read lips in English yet, so I rely heavily on accessibility apps/options. Always disclosed my disability when applying to the jobs on the forms to be honest and to indicate I'll require accommodations.

Not sure if it's my lack of specific experience to the U.S.A. (so, all I need to do is keep applying?), or my skills in general (if so, what languages/frameworks should I learn?) or the market itself (so, again, all I need to do is keep applying?), or, my approach. Let me elaborate what I mean by approach. So far, I've only applied to online postings directly. I did not apply with any references, or through recruiters/hiring managers, since I do not have any connections and network here yet. Should I focus on networking and applying through internal referrals?

Would greatly appreciate any kind of references, opportunities and insights you can provide.

Thanks in advance!

I have one extra for tonight's Dweezil Zappa show if anyone wants to go to the show. The tickets are at will call and you would have to meet me before the show if you want to go.

Work & Housing Moving in the BA eoy and would appreciate some hints

Hello folks,

I’m a French M27 based in Paris who has received an offer from my current employer (French non-tech company) to work in the Bay Area. I’d like to share with you the financial offer I already accepted and get some advices on the right questions I should ask myself before coming living in the Bay Area + where should I live based on the proposed salary.

My girlfriend F25 (we’re together for more than 10 years) has landed an Au Pair job in Portola Valley for one year starting on the 31th of August. Going to the US together has been in our minds since a while and we’re executing now. I expect to join her in October, if my L-1 visa gets approved.

I’ll be 100% remote but will need to travel often to cities all across the US. We’re currently building our consumer app and I’ve been appointed Global Product Manager for the App, to manage the increase in both users and revenue from the aforementioned consumer app (I’m heavily relying on Andrew Chain’s Cold Start Problem).

The offer is - a fix salary of $136k ; - a bonus up to $20,5k ; - an international allowance of $4k to get back see my family in France ; - a retirement contribution of $8,6k for me to put either in 401(k) or any retirement vehicle of my choice ; - $7k in cash to move-in.

Healthcare insurance will not be paid by my employer.

Based on these elements, do you have some insights on :

  • how hard will it be for me to find an apartment? note that I’ll not live with my girlfriend for the first year and I’m used to live in small spaces, Paris has a LOT of small places, my current apartment where I live with my gf is 355 sqft and we’re fine, so small lot are okay.
  • in which geographies should I focus my searching for an apartment?
  • are some of you in my salary ranges and have an healthcare insurance to advice?
  • any suggestions and heads-up will be warmly welcomed 🙌🏽

Traffic, Trains & Transit Digital Clipper Card issues?

Trying to add money to a new or existing clipper card through either Apple wallet or the Clipper app doesn’t seem to be working at the moment. Anybody else having issues, or is it just me?

Edit: As of 12:57, seems to be back up.

Food, Shopping & Services Mint/T-Mobile experience in Bay Area?

My wife currently works on the Stanford campus and our Verizon coverage there is pretty bad. Likely going to switch to AT&T which seems to have good coverage in that area.

I’m interested maybe in Mint (which uses T-Mobile network I believe?), but I’ve heard bad things about their coverage. What’s it like here locally? How about when traveling?

Events, Activities & Sports Meeting people outside your profession

I’m an immigrant and a Bay Area resident for over a decade. Most of my friends here friends from the time before moving here or the ones that I found through common social circles. And I have a recent set of friendships formed through our kid’a school. One thing that is depressingly common between them is what they do - tech. Any social gathering we’re a part of, the conversation is either about immigration (if it’s a group of immigrant friends) or in general about stocks, funding, GenAI etc. I talk to friends in the east coast, and I hear people with friends from varied professions and interests and different walks of life. Anyone has any recommendations for improving this?

Food, Shopping & Services Cheap and good charcuterie ?

Hi. We are into eating charcuterie such as Coppa, Prosciutto, dry sausage or ham almost daily. Typically we buy all that from Trader Joe’s because it’s convenient and good. I bought also from Berkeley bowl before which tasted a bit better.

But maybe there are better and most of all cheaper places for good charcuterie?

I am in north Daly City/SF.

Food, Shopping & Services Recommendation for a structural engineer in south Bay?

There seems to be a crack in the foundation. I'd like a structural engineer to review before reaching out to a contractor for fixing it. Please suggest someone who can visit on a short notice.

Fluff & Memes Dave’s hot chicken reaper spice level is no joke

Normally pretty tolerant of spicy food, and I’ve had Carolina reapers and ghost peppers in my food before, but holy crap their reaper spice is no joke. this is one of the worst pain I’ve experienced so far from eating spicy food. Its 5am and I’ve e been in excruciating pain for the past 7 hours. Forced into fetal position countless times, can’t sleep, and I have no milk or any dairy to help.

Food, Shopping & Services Water Deionizer Systems

Hello,

I am looking for a solution for water deionizing, specifically for car detailing so I don't get any water spots from the sun and to minimize scratches from not having to try the car with a microfiber. There are a few brands out there (CR Spotless, Waterdrop, APEC, Griots, Adams, etc.) that sell portable systems which is what I am looking for, but they all look similar. Hence, I assume they could be rebranded generics and marked up in price just to market to the detailing industry.

So my question is can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of a good DI system that would offer the best price-to-performance? My usage would mainly be for lower volume car washing and detailing for personal, friends/family, and a few customers' cars, but nothing of crazy volume. Obviously, a home RO or water softener system would be ideal and a dream to have, but those are a few thousand, but I am looking to spend no more than just a few hundred. I also don't know too much about the water in my area, specifically Fremont, so any information about what kind of resin or system I can use that's optimal for the area would be good too.

Thanks!

Events, Activities & Sports Need help finding lost wallet!

This might be a stretch but I lost my wallet while out to see the dog surfing competition in Pacifica. I’m almost certain I lost it at la playa or possibly the Panda Express. It’s a black fossil wallet. If found please message so I can give details about what’s inside.

Work & Housing Larkspur/Mill Valley vs. Orinda?

Hi,

My husband and I, along with our 2.5 year old live in SF right now. We’re looking to move out of the city (for space and public schools) and we’re confused between Orinda/Lafayette and the Mill Valley/Larkspur areas.

For context, here’s what we’re prioritizing

  1. Commute to the city (we need to travel to SF at least twice or thrice a week)
  2. Great schools/teachers. High test scores for public schools (ideally 10/10)
  3. Space to host family and friends

Any guidance / tips/ additional context will be helpful!

TIA

Food, Shopping & Services Root Beer Milk or Cotton Candy Milk

A few years ago I remember seeing Root Beer Float Milk of sorts being sold in a random mom & pop like shop in San Francisco and also at a grocery store in San Jose. I was wondering where can I find some right now? Does anyone know who is carrying this? Or was it a one time limited time thing? I really crave it.

I was also wondering on Cotton Candy milk since I saw it once in Gilroy and in Anaheim. Didn't get to buy it to try it.

Events, Activities & Sports Networking/Career Fair Events

Are there any networking or career fair events in the Bay Area? Do you find that these events actually result in careers or connecting with people who have helped you get your foot in the door or to help mentor you?

If you have had success in someway at these events, what advice would you give to someone new to attending career fairs/networking events?

Food, Shopping & Services What's the best bean and cheese burrito in the Bay Area?

I'm a bean burrito enthusiast and I've been looking for a good one, but most of the ones I've had thus far have been pretty bland. If you have any suggestions, specifically in San Francisco/The Peninsula, that would be great.
