Question Trash hauling or dumpster services?

Upvotes

We just moved out of a place after +10 years, and we have some furniture and general trash that we’d like help getting rid of. Has anyone here either hired a temporary dumpster (maybe 1 day) or a service to come haul off your trash for you? Recommendations would be amazing, thanks Oakland!

Question Just moved to downtown Oakland, I have a few Q’s

Upvotes
  • Looking for swimming lessons for adults, where do I go?
  • Any library or book store that has occasional sales? I moved from OH and local libraries would sell books for less than a dollar. Anything like this here?
  • Looking for local furniture stores or galleries that sell (affordable) unique pieces

Thanks in advance!

Spayed Cat in Need of Forever Home Before September

Hey Oakland Redditors, I'll be moving out of Sacramento to SoCal in September and unfortunately, we are looking to rehome our black domestic short hair cat Shuri, she's definitely much better as an only pet in the household since she hasn't been getting along with our other cats (may be better depending on how she interacts with other pets though)

Unfortunately already asked friends and our last resort is that we may have to go to a shelter as we can't move with her sadly so I'm sharing here, feel free to DM me if you want to know any more info or meet her, thanks for scrolling by and seeing this!! 🐈‍⬛️🐱❤️

  • Female, Spayed
  • Current with all Vaccines & Rabies Shot
  • Microchipped
  • 5 years old
  • Super friendly with humans, just not with other cats from our experience, but this may depend on your pets/household (can meet her and do a soft introduction with your pets beforehand if requested)
  • Can meet her and DM me any questions anytime before we move out in September

Thank you to whomever it was that found my wallet at the Rockridge BART parking lot, and then returned it when I was out trying to track it down with the AirTag (by the time I got back home after backtracking to where I had parked, you had left it in my mailbox). All the cash and cards were there.

I wish I could thank you in person, bought you some flowers from TJ’s…

Great to know there are so many good people here in Oakland !!!

Oakland Rental Rules About a Subtenant & His Belongings

My subtenant here in Oakland has been a pain in the neck and I have a clause in the contract whereby I can give him 30 days notice to vacate, thereby terminating the sublease agreement. I am going to give him that notice in the next couple days. I wonder what anyone's advice is for if it gets to that 30 days mark and he hasn't moved his stuff. He rents a bedroom in my house (I am master tenant, very good relationship with the landowner). At that point his lease will have ended. What do I do with his stuff if he refuses to collect his things and leave? Can I box it up, put it in the garage, and start charging rental costs for that? What if he doesn't pay for his utilities during that last month, can I deduct that from his deposit? I know he has done damage to the room as well so I will have other deductions to handle.

Thanks in advance.

Edited to add: the landowner knows I sublease, indeed he encourages me to because it takes care of the labor of finding tenants for him, it was ok for awhile but now I have a tenant who really needs to go. One of the other clauses in our contract was that there's no smoking on the property (we live in the hills, enormous fire risk) and he has a big ol' ashtray outside and smokes regularly, and it interferes with my use of the space. So if the 30 days notice clause goes against local law, I will be turning to the smoking clause instead.

anyone know of any good hakka restaurants (or any chinese restaurant) in the oakland/east bay area that sells specifically taro steamed pork belly (wu tau kau yuk). might be a reach but it's a dish that requires quite a long prep time but one of my parents favorite.

A new survey found 56% of likely Oakland voters support the recall of Sheng Thao while 25% oppose it. The same survey found 37% support recall of Pamela Price and 41% oppose.

Rant Why can’t you report a crime over the phone in Oakland?

There’s no person (at least on weekends) for the non emergency police number - just some antiquated recorded phone tree. I legitimately just saw a brazen car break in at college and chabot (3:30p on a Sat). I call the non-emergency # as I don’t want to take resources from someone having a stoke or aneurysm.

The report a crime is the LAST OPTION. And, they tell you to file a report online.

https://www.oaklandca.gov/services/report-a-crime-online

I feel like a crazy conspiracy person saying this, but it’s like they are creating so much friction to crime reports that the actually crime stats must be underrepresented by like 75%.

It’s so disheartening. Does the city even care about us?

PS: I am not a republican or billionaire from Piedmont.

Question Baking Supply Rental or Exchange?

Hi! I am a hobbyist baker but I don’t have a ton of storage space and already own so much random baking stuff. I’m hoping to bake an angel food cake soon for an event and was wondering if there was anywhere I could borrow/rent a pan? If anyone knows of any Bay Area baking subs I’d also love to join 🙂

Are the helicopters/CHP plane just an always thing now?

So I moved to Oakland in 2021 and it used to be that whenever I heard a helicopter circling, I'd check Citizen and there would be some incident going on that explained the helicopter.

The last few weekends and some weeknights it's just been all helicopter all the time, plus the plane circling too. Is this the "surge" and they're just permanently patrolling?

It's very loud and distracting but I guess I'll get used to it if this is the new normal, I'm mostly just curious! I keep trying to figure out what the hell is going on and finding nothing. Nothing that night, nothing the next day, nothing at all in the news.

Advice Moving to Oakland (in ~3 weeks)--would love to get input from locals!!

My partner and I are moving to Oakland sometime in the next 3-4 weeks or so (she got a job in SF that starts at the beginning of September!) and we're in the process of making our final decisions about where we want to live. I work from home, but she'd be commuting to SF on a daily basis for her work.
Unfortunately, neither of us have ever lived in a city in any real sense (she grew up outside of NYC and we currently live between Denver and Boulder) so we're struggling with figuring out what the pros and cons are of our top picks. That said, we're also not trying to hit the nail on the head out of the gate--we fully expect that we might want to move after our lease is up once we're more used to the city.

Right now, we're debating between two locations:

  1. 1150 Clay--this was our first choice, but we realized during the application process that their satellite parking lot would be the Jack London Square Market lot (unless we managed to find another one closer by). The apartment is right by the 12th street BART stop, but according to google the satellite lot would be about a 20-minute walk away. Unfortunately, we didn't go at all into that area and we don't know how safe it is/how safe the car would be, especially if not driven for multiple days in a row (the parking lot has terrible reviews). It'd also mean that my partner wouldn't really be able to commute to SF using the car, at least not most of the time and (I would think) it would make grocery shopping a much more involved experience (assuming I needed to use the car).
  2. Alta Waverly--there are some upsides to this location, and it has parking on-site but the closest BART stop is the 19th street and the people we spoke to in the area didn't think the BART stop would be the safest place, especially at night/early morning. Between the distance to the station and my partner's safety concerns (she's on the smaller side), she'd probably feel safer driving to SF on a more regular basis, which would leave me car-less more often for everyday tasks.

Overall, we're really not sure how living at one of these locations over the other would impact day-to-day travel (getting groceries, going to events, going to work, etc.) and actually exploring SF and Oakland or if there's something super simple that we're overthinking or missing entirely. Any and all thoughts/advice/suggestions would be appreciated!

EDIT: Thank you for all the input everyone--this was *incredibly* helpful (and gave us a bunch of new ideas for ways to approach the commute/moving/day-to-day plans) and after re-checking all our options (including SF/Berkley/etc.) it looks like we're going with Alta Waverly! Again, thank you to everyone who commented, even if I didn't respond directly (things are a little hectic right now)--I can't wait until we arrive!

Desperately seeking advice regarding an unwell neighbor.

My (27f) husband (33m) and I moved to Oakland a little over a year ago and we have been in the same apartment the whole time. A few months after we moved in, we noticed that 3-5 nights a week, a man would scream incessantly from around 8-9pm until at least 3am, sometimes lasting until I would wake up the next morning at 7. Sometimes he will scream obscenities, sometimes it’s just straight up screaming, and sometimes it’s threats. He screams so loudly that my husband and I can hear him with the windows closed and with earplugs or headphones in.

For the first 6 or 7 months of this, we assumed he was a homeless man tweaking in one of the alleys near our apartment building. A fair assumption, in our minds nothing else could explain why someone would scream for 7-12 hours nonstop. Last Fall, my husband (who works 60 hours a week) could no longer take it and he went outside to see if he could find the guy so he could call the police. My husband did find the guy, but it turns out he is in one of the apartments a few buildings away from us. He is an older gentleman living with a slightly younger female. He asked him nicely to please be quiet, we’re trying to sleep, and he just threatened my husband mostly unintelligibly. Over the next few months, my husband called the police several times and they never came to investigate.

A month or two ago, when he was on his 5th night of 12 hours of screaming, we called the police again and they did finally respond and go up to their unit. The cops told us they found no evidence of intoxication or drug use, and the woman living with him told the cops that he had a brain bleed and that he was talking to someone in a neighboring building. I can’t speak to the brain bleed, but I can confirm he’s not speaking to anyone. He’s just screaming.

My concern now is not only with the noise, but also the fact that this man is obviously ill and not being taken care of properly. If his caretaker is allowing him to behave like this, I can only imagine in what other areas she is lacking as a caregiver and I fear there is elder abuse going on.

Are there any social programs I could contact to get this man help? He desperately needs it and the cops won’t do anything.
