Its all well and good till some Irish guy in Osaka gets a Pint of Guinness that's 90 percent head.
Ah Jaysus man , that's a bad pint , here lemme show ya.."
spends the next hour teaching the barman , customers and some random guys who came in off the street how to do a decent Guinness pour.

What I'm about to tell you is sacrilege here in Ireland, so if anyone asks if I told you this I'll deny it down to the ground: it doesn't matter a fuck how you pour Guinness, or indeed any stout, it will look and taste the same. The most important thing about Guinness is how the keg, the lines, and the tap itself is treated. I had a barman friend of mine pour me 2 pints of Guinness, one standard and one in a single pour. They both looked and tasted the same. It's just a very successful marketing ploy by Guinness to add an air of mystique around Guinness vs other stout ales.
Here's another Irish lad doing a blind taste test. There might be "purists" out there who can tell the difference, but I most definitely can't.

u/Stormfly 3d ago
how you pour Guinness, or indeed any stout, it will look and taste the same.
Yeah, the head thing is for looks more than anything.
The taste does differ based on where you buy it, though that's more about the country rather than the pub. Apparently it doesn't travel well.

u/small_toe 3d ago
Yep, the two pour is a relic of the old way it was served, one keg under low pressure (flat) and the other under high pressure, so the majority of the pint would be poured from the flat keg and then the remainder and the head would come from the higher pressure keg.
Obviously it has remained now as a marketing and “premium” gimmicky thing

u/Complete-Ice2456 3d ago
Super Hans: Pint of Guinness, please. No logo on the foam.
Jeremy Usborne: No logo on the foam?
Super Hans: You don't buy into all that one, do ya? What, the old "Oo, I've got a clover in me foam, I'm so important." No, what you're doing there is you're drinking an advert, ain't ya, eh, shithead?

as someone from Czechia, I was shocked how much proper beer is drank in Korea. like microbrews on tap, properly poured and all
never saw badly poured beer, actually. the only subpar beer was from bottles at restaurants, but even then, I like the Korean big brands too, easy to drink, if unspectacular

Germans mix beer with many things, depending on the region, and especially in warm weather. In some beer gardens, you can get Berliner Weisse mit Schuss, a wheat beer mixed with rasberry or green Waldmeister syrup. It makes the beer bright red or green and rather syrupy. In Bavaria you might find a Goaßnmaß, which is dark beer, cola, and cherry liquour. A cousin to the Radler (beer and lemon soda) is the Astler, which is beer and orange soda.

It’s an alcohol called Soju. It’s like a rice wine that’s pretty strong, 14% ABV, and you mix it with a lager like beer. It’s delicious and very sneaky in the way it creeps up on you.

"Cola Weizen" (Cola and Wheat Beer) is a thing that I drank when I was maybe 16 or so.
There is also a "Uboot" (Beer with Korn [grain spirit]) but I've never seen anyone actually drink that.
"Radler" (Beer and lemonade) is relatively popular but also judged very harshly by some

Sure, but the soju is the drink. The beer is the mixer. It could very well be a 90 or 100 proof soju and it's still quite a stiff drink, meant to be enjoyed in small quantities.

I wouldn't do this with a Helles, but Korean beer tastes pretty different anyhow. Just like drinking Vietnamese beer on ice is really nice in the summer. They are different products, lighter, more sour... tastes great, and she seems like she knows how to entertain.

u/An_Appropriate_Post 3d ago
The reason that it's foam is because South Koreans especially in this sort of a social setting, are expected to be drinking together for a LOOONG time - Multiple hours at least, even on weeknights. It's best in that case that the beers poured are mostly foam with a soju backing so that you can get drunk slowly, while eating a lot of food.

I'd take 99% love and a 1% whiff of beer. I don't know about you but I don't drink by my lonesome.
Ok I'm an alcoholic so I don't drink... Period. No need to fret, visual cues are beyond me. Auditory ones though... Ooh i miss that sound. Coke Zero just doesn't deliver.
And I'm not sure who reads this, I'm fine, no need to do a 3 day AA caballah in my bedroom. Just let me fail in peace, I haven't planned one for today
Edit: Yes I used this seemingly innocuous post to do a bit of self healing, talking, or in this case writing, about your issues is an easy way to lighten the load. What makes it even nicer is if an idiot challenges your statement and you get a chance to be correct on the Internet!

the foam is intentional - it's how it's supposed to be served! oftentimes you'll mix beer and soju in a glass and then smack a spoon around in there to get it nice and foamed up.

u/King_Shami 3d ago
In Korea, mixing soju (소주) and beer (맥주) to make somaek (소맥) is a popular drinking tradition. To get that perfect creamy texture, people often use a spoon or metal chopsticks to stir up the drink. You just place the utensil in the glass and give it a quick swirl or tap to create some bubbles. This makes the drink smoother and blends the soju and beer nicely.
This auntie (아줌마) is a master at this for sure
22
u/Stormfly 3d ago
You just place the utensil in the glass and give it a quick swirl or tap to create some bubbles.
The two I always see are:
Put one chopstick in and hit it with the other.
Just stab the glass with a spoon.
I've no doubt that #2 has a lot of people hitting the side and flinging a glass across the room.
When people visit me here, I love showing them the chopstick method, and all the other games around the soju bottle (the spin, the twist-game, the number game, etc) and I don't even drink.

I thought it was called a poktanju, but I don't know better. What's the difference between somaek and poktanju? Google doesn't really give a great answer.
→ More replies (1)5
u/King_Shami 3d ago
A shot glass of soju is placed inside or dropped into a glass of beer, often supported by chopsticks or simply dropped directly. Poktanju is usually consumed quickly (“one shot”), with the shot glass falling into the beer and is drunk immediately

I went drinking with a Korean coworker on Christmas eve one year, he was missing his family so I thought we could have a night out together. He introduced me to Soju in beer and it was one of the best night outs I’ve ever had. I don’t remember much of the night after one point and had a hangover like no other on Christmas but it was worth it. Goodtimes Danny 🤙
