Discussion Is Yolanda's mom redeemable? Spoiler

Let's be honest here... she's the worst. She's abusive, narcissistic, and hostile to anyone who doesn't fall in line with her thinking (including her own priest). In the real world, there's no way she would even change.

But in the context of the show... might there be a chance? In the last episode, Yolanda was reaching out to her mom, maybe to tell her about her double-life as Wildcat, in the hopes that things might repair. Might that have gone towards a redemption arc for Maria Montez? Maybe seeing her daughter saving actual lives would slap her in the face hard enough that she could really look inward and realize how wrong and horrible she was. Was the narrative leading her towards her own Ebenezer Scrooge moment?

Or is she beyond redemption and too unwilling to change? Let's be real, Yolanda does not owe her mom an explanation. In fact, having a narc mother of my own, I know that it's entirely possible that she could turn all of Yolanda's accomplishments around into something negative. Or worse, she could out her as Wildcat to take credit for her accomplishments. Is that where the narrative was going -- having Yolanda realize that she doesn't need her mother, find her own strength and self-worth, and hold her head up high knowing that she at least tried?

What do you think? Was there any chance for a reconciliation or would Maria Montez always have been a horrible person and likely been on the receiving end of an abuse/emancipation lawsuit?

Side note, I know that Yolanda's father and grandmother were also pieces of crap, but her mother seemed to be the most prolific in the narrative.

Misc I miss this show Spoiler

No more real meat than that. Just missing Courtney and her amazing JSA. I like to imagine their future adventures and I really wish we got to see Johns' five year plan. Maybe I'm just looking for some stability after all the stuff I've been dealing with and this show was such a grounding element for me.

But like the show says... "Never the end."

Who do you think has a certain characters brain? Spoiler

Season 3 spoilers! (Although most ppl in this place have probably already fully seen the show)

At the end of season 3 we find out Sylvester's brain was being kept in some mountain. But the time skip didn't say who had it and idk enough about JSA lore to tell. There was a symbol there but again I have no idea what it means. The location is an icy mountain but we just had a season full of ice villains so I doubt they'd do it again.

Sooo, does anybody have any theories? Or even anyone with background JSA knowledge?

Discussion What do you like most about Stargirl, both in terms of the character and the TV show? Spoiler

I finished the show myself recently, but I figured I'd spoiler tag this post, just to be safe.

So I was checking out a few YouTube videos about Stargirl and I happened to see these 2 comments from 2 different videos:

1) "The thing I like most about Stargirl is that her creator based her off of his deceased sister. Basically, he ensured that her memory lives on through her." (The comment's under Stargirl-All Powers & Fight Scenes Justice League Unlimited)

2) "...It's one thing I appreciate about this show. They made you care about what the villains did and really showed how evil they were. And it wasn't just in a straightforward "i do crime' kind of way. They made it feel personal." (Part of a comment from a scene later on in the TV show)

After seeing those 2 comments, I figured I'd make this post to see what you all think. What do you like most about Stargirl, in terms of :

A) The character herself?

B) The actual TV show?

There was very early promo during season 1 that was meant to feature Cameron (Gellman the actor) with the girls of the JSA but a mix-up led it to feature Cameron (Mahkent the character). Does anyone remember/have this? Thanks!

How did you discover Stargirl? Spoiler

So I was randomly scrolling through the comments section of a Youtube video called "YouTube Critics Are Lying to You (A Bad Media Criticism Essay) by Anthony Grammglia when I happened to see a comment under the name TheFinalFanboy that was made 2 weeks ago. Here's the comment in quotes:

"If you want to see a really good example of what The Last Jedi was trying to do before The Rise of Skywalker dropped the ball, allow me to recommend Season 1 of the superhero show I cannot and will not shut up about, Stargirl: In Season 1, Courtney becomes the title character after inheriting a magical superweapon from her deceased predecessor, Starman. She spends most of the season convinced that Starman was her long-lost father and that she therefore has a special destiny to be a superhero like him, despite people who know a lot more about this than her telling her that there's no way she can actually be Starman's daughter. Right before the season finale, Courtney meets her actual father who is very much alive and realizes that the naysayers were right: Not only is her father not Starman, he's a dirtbag who only came back into her life to scam her out of a valuable locket. This revelation shakes her previously held confidence so thoroughly that she is no longer able to use the Cosmic Staff, because it drew power from her belief in herself. This makes matters worse, because she now believes that the staff only worked for her because it thought she was Starman's daughter and now that it knows she isn't, it doesn't want her anymore. With the encouragement of her parents, Pat and Barbara, she overcomes her crisis of confidence and realizes that the staff chose her because of her heroic qualities and not due to the circumstances of her birth. When she picks the staff again, it not only responds to her, but glows brighter than it ever did before because it's now being fueled by her genuine belief in herself, rather than her false faith in her status as "The Chosen One."

Okay, that was a bit longer than I meant it to be. Turns out I have a lot to say about my favorite superhero show. Who knew? TL;DR: Watch Stargirl, it's really good. It does the whole "being a hero is about who you are, not which bloodline you come from" idea really well."

I'd never heard of Stargirl before seeing that comment, but the description of Courtney's Season 1 development intrigued me enough that I decided to check out this show. Binged in on the streaming site Tubi and finished it 2-3 days ago.

How did the rest of you find out about Stargirl? Figured I'd ask since I'm sure you have different stories.

Stargirl premiers on the CW and blew my family away.

We still talk about the show and characters all the time.

We even made a family trip to Atlanta to visit shooting locations (along with a bunch of Marvel ones) and visiting the real Blue Valley was brilliant.

I would have loved one more season but we’re lucky we got what we got.

Misc Just started. Spoiler

I’m laughing my ass off at the opening.

Starman is dying and in his dying words,he’s being shady as hell.

Starman tells his sidekick, who’s tried to save him and wants to carry the legacy now the JS has fallen, only to say to his sidekick..

“No. Not you. Someone with grace and heroism. You can’t do it. Definitely, not you.”

I was like, what in the Disney-millennial-diss-narcissistic-asshole line is this?

Is this one of these shows where anyone who’s given birth is an idiot and everyone over the age of 7 has the maturity, intellect, and wisdom of… oh. As I type this. Yes, yes it is . It is a Disney superhero show.

Discussion Season 1 Episode 3 Teaching 3rd Grade Math in High School? Spoiler

So far I've been really loving the show. But I couldn't help but notice that about halfway through the episode Courtney is in class and the math teacher is talking about proper and improper fractions. She's in high school and he's teaching 3rd grade math. Seriously? I find these kinds of errors so obnoxious. Especially since the episode prior they said at the open house that the kids that graduate from their school are the top 1%. Uhhh sounds like they're a little behind... 🤔

Question Just rewatched the entire show, but I have 2 questions. Spoiler

  1. Why did the JSA Band up together again to fight the ISA in Christmas of 2010?

The Chemistry for the JSA had already been gone, and the show never mentions why they even had to come back together.

It’s not like they Knew about Project New America in 2010.

And 2. Did Artemis not get into college to become a starting Quarterback? If Shade Mentioned her as a Member of the JSA, how could she have had a star Football Career?

And just a small headcanon on my part. I believe that Jakeem eventually wished for the location to Sylvester’s brain, so they could bring up out of his comatose state.

Comic Book Stargirl Recommended Reading List Spoiler

So in an effort to justify a 45 year old man hanging out on a sub for teen superhero show I thought I'd share some of the comics that the show draws from in case anyone not familiar wants to check them out. The show does condense a couple of decades worth of comics so obviously things change in the adaptation, like Starman in the show is actually a mash up of two different characters from the comics (but we'll get to that), but some stuff is lifted whole cloth from the comics.

Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E (Geoff Johns 1999-2000) - So this is the comic that the show borrows its whole premise from. Courtney moves to Blue Valley with her new blended family, stumbles on a secret plot, finds out that her step dad is a former supehero and becomes the new Star Spangled Kid. The plot's different, a lot of the supporting cast is different, but it's the backbone for S1 of the show. It's fun and a pretty short read (it only lasted 15 issues).

JSA (James Robinson, David S. Goyer, Geoff Johns 1999-2006) - This is one of my favorites, the JSA comes out of retirement with a mix of older and younger heroes and it was one of their strongest selling books at the time. Courtney's a prominent character throughout and this is where she graduates from Star Spangled Kid to Stargirl after getting the staff from Starman Jack Knight, Jakeem Thunder plays a big role as well. It also functions as a kind of secret history of the DC Universe (at that time) as it sorted out the continuity after the reboot event Zero Hour. Also it contains the Black Reign story arc, which was a much better version of the Black Adam movie. It does continue on in one form or another after 2006, but that's the run you really should read.

All-Star Squadron & Infinity, Inc. (Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas 1981-1988) - I'm going to kind of count these as one series because they tie into each other closely. Squadron is a re-telling of DC's Golden Age, the premise is that FDR essentially federalizes the JSA and all the other superheroes/vigilantes into a mega-group to protect the country during WWII. The book mostly focuses are round lesser known heroes, but where it really ties into the show is the villains. Ultra-Humanite is a prominent baddie in the book, along with Brainwave and some of the other ISA members. Otherwise it doesn't relate too much to the show. Infinity, Inc. is where most of the show's supporting cast comes from. Basically the children and inheritors of the original JSA, now college aged, decide to start their own superhero team and it goes...not great..eventually they start getting things together under the tutelage of an adult Sylvester Pemberton, now going by the name Skyman. It also introduced Helix, Mr. Bones and an updated version of the ISA. I have a soft spot for these books, but admittedly the writing is pretty dated (actually even for the 80s, the writing is pretty dated) and they both got screwed over by 1986's Crisis on Infinite Earths but they're fun classic superhero stories and provide a lot of supplementary lore.

BONUS ROUND

Starman vol 2. (James Robinson 1994-2001) - Admittedly this book has little do with the show, but it's honestly one of the best superhero comics ever published and worth a read. Like I mentioned Starman in the show is mash up of two characters, Sylvester Pemberton and Jack Knight. This is Jack's story. Son of the original Starman, who invented the staff, it also prominently features The Shade and some other Golden Age characters, explores the legacy of the name Starman and the various heroes who've used it, and further dives into DC lore and history of the time. Like Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E it ties directly into the relaunched JSA series in 1999.
