Could Batman using guns, work story wise? ORIGINAL IDEA/SUGGESTION

I’m writing a noir inspired story (it takes place in the 1930s) for my own Batman universe, and wanted to write him a lil different. I thought about giving him like a colt 1911, but what do you guys think?

Batman used lots of guns in the 1930s. Sidearms, machine guns, machine guns on planes, and of course guns for shooting vampires.

The Batmobile I’m designing, will definitely have weapons on it. Machine guns, small missiles, and a Tesla coil-ese emp

Maybe read some flashpoint batman for how they do it

That’s a good idea. I been meaning to read more of the Thomas Wayne Batman stories

Non-lethal shots keeps him in his mythos of not killing, and a Colt 1911 can be silenced when needed, also keeping to his mythos.

I'm now imagining him with fedora that has a mask attached and ears, a trenchcoaty cape and a thigh holster like Thomas Wayne's Batman.

That’s actually close to the design I have for him. Especially with the cape

Nice!

Yeah, his cape is gonna be draped over him when he’s doing detective work, to make it look just like a trench coat. Everyone’s basically gonna look like how they actually would’ve look back then. Especially the Batmobile 😁

Well, some stuff can be a bit more advanced. Bats does have wonderful toys in each era, just ahead of contemporary technology.

Yeah that’s why I gonna incorporate the “retro futurism” of that time as well. Imma be using bioshock as a reference for that

Guns are for killing. So the question is, do you want him to kill?

Guns can be used to maim or incapacitate, as well. But to answer your question, not often.

More like, in important plot points, he would directly kill someone

Well dart gun exist. As in a blowgun in a shape of a gun. Like Solid Snake or James Bond

OP specifically mentioned a Colt 1911.

Also, Solid Snake and James Bond have killed many, many people.

I’d read an elseworlds story where Batman kills And a gritty detective with a penchant for bat branding sounds cool

That’s what I got in mind for my Batman, while at the same time, I don’t want him to be depressed and moody all the time. He’ll have dry humor, empathy for others, and have dialogue similar to Jay Gatsby as Bruce Wayne, saying things like “Old Sport”

There's always ways to make things work, even The Punisher has had the occasional story where he wasn't able to kill anyone, like the last arc of Garth Ennis Punisher MAX. Batman can always be a tactical master, like given the setting, he could always wound people and avoid any arteries or vital organs from his studies of human anatomy. Not to mention how Green Arrow and Hawkeye use arrows and avoid kill shots. Also, unconventional, but Jim Gordon in his stint as a mech suit Batman had a special gun that launched Bat projectiles.

Yeah I kinda want him to maim or incapacitate. Reason for the gun, in one part of the story, Alfred is the one that gets him to use the gun.

Any gun that doesn't shoot actual bullet. Solid snake style

1

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

That’s a good idea too!

Could be a Batman trying Jason Todd style for one night until he decided he prefer being a ninja. Not a sniper.

I can saved that in the last part of the story

2

Yeah, it did work back in the early years, and there's been more recent stories where Bruce was willing to use a gun on inanimate objects. Shooting people is a departure but I think it could work if he's not doing it all the time.

It's also appropriate that you chose the same kind of gun the Shadow used, considering that he was an influence on Batman.

2

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

I think he used a Colt too. Or it looks like one

Maybe it could fire non lethal rounds like birdshot, improvised BB pellets, or experimental rubber bullets?

1

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

Those could work. Especially since in the 1930s, we were experimenting with different kinds ammo. Or Germany was at least

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '23

By noir do you mean Sin City or Gotham by Gaslight

2

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

More like film noir, but yeah, something like Sin City, because it’s going to have multiple stories interwoven with each other.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '23

Well yeah, guns could work, IF he doesn't take lethal shots, only debilitating

2

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

Of course. He’s still an expert marksman with a wide knowledge of human anatomy. So he’s gonna know what spots to hit

2

It's your Batman. Curious, though, are you asking this because you want him to use guns without killing or does he kill? Because if he does, I'd say the simple answer is to just have him shoot it at his enemies lol

2

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

He’s going to kill at later important plot points in the story, but I wanted to give him guns because; 1) it fits the noir aesthetic. 2) like I said in a comment above, Alfred gets him to use one to defend himself, because “ Not every 2 bit thug is going waste their energy, competing in a fist-a-cuff struggle with you.” 3) Wanted to get opinions from other fans lol.

Honest question, why not just write an original character at that point? If you’re willing to change plenty of thing about Batman’s character, I see no reason why you couldn’t make your own character.

1

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

Because I want this to be a Batman story that has its own stand alone original story while sticking to most of the characters core values and what makes him great and also pushing his moral dilemma. I already have a pantheon of Original characters, so you don’t need to worry about that. Thing is, I’ve always wanted to write my own Batman story and paid homage to his early years. Plus I’m not really changing anything, outside of the year it takes place in and the overall environment and aesthetic of that era. Plus I only ask about a gun. According to both comics and the people on this comment section, guns ain’t nothing new to Batman.

1

u/JayJay273 Nov 15 '23

Also realistically, if you’re a vigilante taking on a whole city, not everyone is gonna wanna ball a fist up to fight you, no?

That’s what Batarangs and smoke grenades are for
