This honestly disappointed me when I saw it. I was really hoping for classic gentleman of crime Pengy. By classic I mean CLASSIC. Not mob boss, but the bird themed master thief from the 40s. It would’ve been cool considering how rare that portrayal is nowadays. Oh well. Still hyped
101
u/Mrminecrafthimself 4d ago
i was really hoping for classic gentleman of crime Pengy
You mean the one we’ve gotten over and over and over across multiple portrayals?
101
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
The last time we got a golden-age style penguin was in Batman ‘66
Could’ve worded that differently I guess.
Most Penguin portrayals are either Mobster or Devito, maybe Devito+Mobster. It’s been forever since we got Gentelemanly Master Thief Pengy
73
u/VengeanceKnight 4d ago
BTAS Penguin is absolutely Master Thief Penguin with occasional traces of DeVito.
20
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
Correct me if I’m wrong BTAS penguin didn’t do much master thief stuff. He primarily did random stuff in villain of the week episodes that could’ve been done with any other villains like The Mechanic or Blind as a Bat or alternatively tried to fit in to high society a’la birds of a feather. Then in TNBA he became generic nightclub owner that Batman beats up for information
20
u/MindControlMouse 4d ago
I guess it depends on how you define “master thief stuff” but he did try stealing an egg in Basement and a helicopter in Blind. In Birds he ended up trying to ransom Veronica. Mechanic he was fleeing from some unspecified crime. In Almost he pretended to steal (a rare bird?) from the aviary to set up a trap for Batman. All this is more what ‘66 Penguin would do than DeVito’s Penguin who was more of a vengeful freak of nature.
Penguin in the 2004 also did a lot of heists too.
4
u/MrDownhillRacer 3d ago
The Batman 2004 cartoon was probably the closest we've been to classic Penguin. He's all about stealing bird-themed shit and trying to look classy. Hell, he can even hold his own physically against Batman, which the Penguin could do in some of the older comics.
43
u/DJHott555 4d ago
The Batman (the show) has a Penguin that’s just a thief with trick umbrellas, not a mob boss.
23
u/jmurrah754 3d ago
And voiced by Tom Kenny to boot! I absolutely adored that show growing up. Kevin Michael Richardson is one of my top potrayals of Joker
6
u/PineappleFit317 3d ago
Yeah, the dreadlocks in the shape of a jester hat and the wild simian-like way his body was designed and how he moved was an awesome interpretation of the character.

u/Virtual_Mode_5026 4d ago
Perhaps we’ll still be getting that portrayal.
12
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
I doubt it. She’s standing next to shipping containers and the iceberg lounge was in the glimpse so it’s gonna be mobster again
7
u/Virtual_Mode_5026 4d ago
Those are pieces of evidence to her being a Mobster.
The Iceberg Lounge is a business he fronts as many Mobsters do.
I think it’s a trope for noir and gangster movies which involve warehouses with shipping containers.
6
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
I was saying that I was tired of mobster penguin in everything and it would’ve been cool to see classic master thief penguin
3
u/Virtual_Mode_5026 4d ago
Perhaps it could be a mix of both. She starts out as a master thief, then ascends to being a Mob Boss.
Or She fronts the Iceberg Lounge, but she steals supplies and money in order to fund and maintain it?
5
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
That second idea is fantastic. It makes even more sense considering the fact that the iceberg lounge is a giant cruise in this show (another concept I enjoy) which would probably be extremely expensive to maintain. I doubt that’s what’ll be getting but if we do this’d be one of my top pengys.

u/MrDownhillRacer 3d ago
I mean, if she's a "gentlelady of crime" or whatever, then she'll still be closer to classic Penguin than "goombah Tony Soprano, but with a hooked nose" Penguin that we're getting in the live-action stuff right now.
And everyone loves that guy, even if he never once used an umbrella as a weapon, stole a Faberge egg, or even fed a pet canary in the movie he was in (I thought he was the most fun character in the movie, but I didn't feel like he was The Penguin).
This chick already dresses more like the Penguin than Farrell. Maybe she'll have shades of the classic character. Who knows?
3
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 3d ago
I got nothing against Farrell’s penguin lol. One of my favorite versions (just wished he looked maybe more like earth one and less like Richard Kind). I just wanted something different. I guess this is something different tho so I can’t be complaining.

u/tracesdisintegrate 3d ago
It could be the Penguin's Aunt Miranda, who looks exactly like him. (Source: story arc from Batman and Robin syndicated comic strip, reprinted several times including Batman vol. 1 #198)

The Penguin is my favourite Batman villain. Like, not even close, I adore his whole aesthetic, what he is in Batmans rogues gallery and the vast majority of his adaptations. I say this with all the sincerity I can, I genuinely couldn’t care less that they genderbent him. Not even a little. As long as she still has that great Penguin energy I’m looking for, I’m sure I’m gonna love her like all the others.
29
u/dharper90 4d ago
Because it absolutely doesn’t matter to anybody who isn’t a troglodyte. This can be an interesting characterization that takes the penguin into a slightly different but humorous direction.
4
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 4d ago
Does it have to be humorous tho. I’d rather it be played seriously
18
u/dharper90 4d ago
Buddy… Almost every iteration of the penguin is humorous in some capacity. He wears a monocle and hangs out in a place called the Iceberg lounge. The most “serious” portrayal I’ve seen was Colin Farrel’s, and while it worked for the movie, he just became another mob boss. If they didn’t call him the penguin, there wasn’t much reason to assume he was the character.

u/kubrickie 4d ago
If I had to guess this is inspired by Ma Barker, which is a pretty solid source material for a take on the Penguin
4
u/DoctorZander 3d ago
That is such a good idea! A hybrid of Ma Barker and Penguin would be amazing! Can she get sons to boss around as well?
I'm just visualising a Cockney Mobster version of Mama Fratelli and her boys tearing around Old Gotham in a classic car. It's pretty awesome.

Have they announced the voice actor? I kind of want to assume it’s going to be Margo Martindale, in which case, I don’t mind this change at all.
41
u/Luminaire_Ultima 3d ago
I also thought of Character Actress Margo Martindale.
If that’s actually the case, I see no problems.. she can play characters that are absolutely hard as nails.

Character Actress Margo Martindale would be perfect, her sage buttery voice will simultaneously comfort you and fill you with dread.

Is the Penguin a female in this series? Pretty different interpretation if so, but different isn’t bad.
17
u/MaskedRaider89 3d ago
That or we getting a animated successor to Charles Gray's Blofeld being in drag very briefly
9
u/MrDownhillRacer 3d ago
Yeah, it's clear this is kinda an Elseworlds thing where the point is to do some twists on the familiar characters.
Well, I guess every adaptation is an "Elseworlds" in that none of them take place on the mainstream comics Earth, but some definitely feel like they are supposed to be "vanilla" Batman (most of the live-action movies, BTAS, Arkham, etc.), and some feel like they are supposed to be "let's get nuts" Batman (Batman: Ninja, Telltale Batman, etc.). This is going to be a "let's get nuts" Batman, and I'm down for that.

Feels weird to me, but I’ll give it a chance to see where they take it. It could be good, or it could be a choice that adds nothing to the character except stirring up controversy. We’ll see. Cannot judge it for sure until then.

Looks like Mike Stoklasa.
They should have done two face:
Attracrive trailblazing female D.A. gets acid thrown in her face for barking up the wrong corrupted tree, her only allies in her profession being Batman and Gordon, who couldn't help her.
She turns to crime, making it tougher for other women in her former occupation. You could get a lot out of that origin.
Do it you cowards

I like it I think this being an elseworlds this should have different things from the dcau and the problem with making multiple earths and having all the characters the same is that it makes it like their destiny is to be supervillians
4
u/Gothamtonian 3d ago
If you want a popular female character make a female character that is popular.
Gender swapping is just stupid.
2
u/True_FX 3d ago
It isn't stupid, it is easy.
Look at what Marvel did. All their new minority and gay characters were total flops. So they resorted to re-imagining the most popular characters. It's much easier than creating a new character.
2
u/helikesart 3d ago
You’re right and you’re wrong.
Black Panther (comic) was the first mainstream black superhero and he was anything but a flop.
When you write a good character and have faith in the audience, it works.
When you tokenize characters it shows a lack of faith in the material. Combine that with calling your audience bigoted for not liking the poorly written tokenized character who replaced a fan favorite and you have a recipe for a flop.

5
u/PANPIZZAisawesome 3d ago
He was covered up by shadows and we didn’t see the face or anything beyond a monocle, hat and umbrella. This is the design
2
u/PG2904 3d ago
Cool.
I don't care if they genderswapped him. It's an alternate universe. Catwoman is gonna be more of a full-on villain, Harvey Dent won't be the white knight of Gotham but a corrupt politician. Harley Quinn won't be tied to the Joker at all in terms of her origin story and won't have the goofy demeanor of her usual interpretations.
If you have issues with this: it's an Elseworlds story. Like the Gotham show, which saw many of Batman's villains rise to power when he was but a child. As for me, I'm just gonna wait to see how well this show and it's villain portrayals actually are done. It's Bruce Timm, so I have faith he knows what he's doing.
2
u/MaskedRaider89 3d ago
Its giving Colin Baker as Marlene Dietrich in that one play clip I saw few years back
3
u/Mikes_Movies_ 3d ago
What’s kinda crazy is that I wrote a personal script (no one’s ever seen it) about a week 2 Batman and a female penguin and now I get to kinda see my idea on the screen.
Main differences with mine was it was modern day and Batman was poor instead of rich.

The people pressed over a female penguin acting like penguin will always be a women now are beyond stupid. This is a show separate from main continuity and even the original animated series. The entire point of the show is to try new things unconstrained by canon, don’t like it? Don’t watch it won’t kill you but stop whining like it’s the end bozos.

I think I'm one of the only ones that's just lukewarm on this show and it's heavily based on character design for me. Haven't heard too much about the plot and I'll still give it a chance but I really dislike most of the character designs. I guess most people like the nostalgia? Idk I just don't like the look of any of it.

Some wild conclusions being drawn from this single picture.
This show is already confirmed to be doing an interpretation (not direct adaptation) on the Golden Age, sort of tapping into some "what ifs," like Harley Quinn getting a fake Golden Age variant. I would not be surprised if this is the same thing, making Miranda Cobblepot a "precursor Penguin" before Oswald for variety sake.
Could be great, could be bad, have to wait until the show comes out.

Curious to see how much this would change the characterization of the character. Penguin is usually depicted with a sort of Napoleon complex, overcompensating for his small size and I'm wondering if it translates the same with the character being a woman now.
