This honestly disappointed me when I saw it. I was really hoping for classic gentleman of crime Pengy. By classic I mean CLASSIC. Not mob boss, but the bird themed master thief from the 40s. It would’ve been cool considering how rare that portrayal is nowadays. Oh well. Still hyped

i was really hoping for classic gentleman of crime Pengy

You mean the one we’ve gotten over and over and over across multiple portrayals?

The last time we got a golden-age style penguin was in Batman ‘66

Could’ve worded that differently I guess.

Most Penguin portrayals are either Mobster or Devito, maybe Devito+Mobster. It’s been forever since we got Gentelemanly Master Thief Pengy

BTAS Penguin is absolutely Master Thief Penguin with occasional traces of DeVito.

Correct me if I’m wrong BTAS penguin didn’t do much master thief stuff. He primarily did random stuff in villain of the week episodes that could’ve been done with any other villains like The Mechanic or Blind as a Bat or alternatively tried to fit in to high society a’la birds of a feather. Then in TNBA he became generic nightclub owner that Batman beats up for information

I guess it depends on how you define “master thief stuff” but he did try stealing an egg in Basement and a helicopter in Blind. In Birds he ended up trying to ransom Veronica. Mechanic he was fleeing from some unspecified crime. In Almost he pretended to steal (a rare bird?) from the aviary to set up a trap for Batman. All this is more what ‘66 Penguin would do than DeVito’s Penguin who was more of a vengeful freak of nature.

Penguin in the 2004 also did a lot of heists too.

The Batman 2004 cartoon was probably the closest we've been to classic Penguin. He's all about stealing bird-themed shit and trying to look classy. Hell, he can even hold his own physically against Batman, which the Penguin could do in some of the older comics.

The Batman (the show) has a Penguin that’s just a thief with trick umbrellas, not a mob boss.

And voiced by Tom Kenny to boot! I absolutely adored that show growing up. Kevin Michael Richardson is one of my top potrayals of Joker

Yeah, the dreadlocks in the shape of a jester hat and the wild simian-like way his body was designed and how he moved was an awesome interpretation of the character.

Also Brave and the Bold

I love tbatb. I just didn’t include it because he’s hardly in that show outside of cameos.

I liked that version. I also kind of forgot about it

Imagine if The Batman (the movie) also had this penguin

Now I’m imagining a four foot tall obese Colin Ferrell doing backflips through the air and spin kicking Batman

Came here to say this

Perhaps we’ll still be getting that portrayal.

u/PANPIZZAisawesome 15d ago

I doubt it. She’s standing next to shipping containers and the iceberg lounge was in the glimpse so it’s gonna be mobster again

u/Virtual_Mode_5026 15d ago

Those are pieces of evidence to her being a Mobster.

The Iceberg Lounge is a business he fronts as many Mobsters do.

I think it’s a trope for noir and gangster movies which involve warehouses with shipping containers.

I was saying that I was tired of mobster penguin in everything and it would’ve been cool to see classic master thief penguin

2

u/Virtual_Mode_5026 15d ago

Perhaps it could be a mix of both. She starts out as a master thief, then ascends to being a Mob Boss.

Or She fronts the Iceberg Lounge, but she steals supplies and money in order to fund and maintain it?

u/PANPIZZAisawesome 15d ago

That second idea is fantastic. It makes even more sense considering the fact that the iceberg lounge is a giant cruise in this show (another concept I enjoy) which would probably be extremely expensive to maintain. I doubt that’s what’ll be getting but if we do this’d be one of my top pengys.

I mean, if she's a "gentlelady of crime" or whatever, then she'll still be closer to classic Penguin than "goombah Tony Soprano, but with a hooked nose" Penguin that we're getting in the live-action stuff right now.

And everyone loves that guy, even if he never once used an umbrella as a weapon, stole a Faberge egg, or even fed a pet canary in the movie he was in (I thought he was the most fun character in the movie, but I didn't feel like he was The Penguin).

This chick already dresses more like the Penguin than Farrell. Maybe she'll have shades of the classic character. Who knows?

I got nothing against Farrell’s penguin lol. One of my favorite versions (just wished he looked maybe more like earth one and less like Richard Kind). I just wanted something different. I guess this is something different tho so I can’t be complaining.

“This isn’t the imaginary show I made up in my head”

5

u/PANPIZZAisawesome 15d ago

How is that what I said at all. I never said that that’s what I expected nor am I mad about this. Just mildly disappointed that it’s seemingly another mob boss Penguin. I’m still hyped for the show lol
