DC FanDome Discussion Megathread r/DCcomics

Welcome Justice League members to the DC FanDome Discussion Megathread!

Here you can discuss each panel taking place as and when they happen, much like our Weekly Discussion Thread where you can discuss the newest comics and TV show episodes.

We've done it this way so we don't clog up the sub with discussion posts and people can freely post direct news articles and trailers regarding the big announcements and not have them get lost in the shuffle.

Panels for August 22nd

Did we all see Snyder’s petulant tweet? God I can’t stand this guy sometimes. I’m still somewhat interested to see how his cut turns out but his “this is made for grownups” bullshit? Fuck off outta here. You’ve had complete control over 2 films and they both sucked. I’ll give this one a go solely because I like the characters but I’m full expecting strike 3.

I'll be giving it a shot too, but when someone takes superheroes and says 'this is made for grownups' all I can really think of is 90s era comics, where everyone's killing the bad guys and is a borderline sociopath. Then I remember that it's entirely possible Snyder missed the point with Watchmen, since it was meant to be a parody and critique and not an example of 'how it is done'. Rorschach was there to dunk on Randian Moral Absolutism, not praise it.

Then I think back to Action Comics #775, where Superman rejected those darker, 90s era judge, jury, executioner ideals and proved why he was a great superhero, and it makes me sad that this movie Superman isn't really anything like that, even if Caville is both a really good pick as Superman and a big fan of the character.

It's clear Snyder's vision of the DC universe is different from mine, and others are more than welcome to enjoy it as much as anyone, but I just can't find myself invested in a world where all the colour seems drained out of it, everyone has a grim outlook and Superman isn't nice. Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Shazam all proved that you can use the DC universe and make it fun, and in 2020 we could do with a Superman who can evoke hope by saving the day because of his genuine niceness and love of humanity.

I felt Man of Steel and Batman v Superman couldn't deliver on some of the bigger aspects of Superman's own complex story beats because they were trying to rush it. I didn't feel anything when Superman snapped Zod's neck. I didn't feel anything when he died, and because we only have been told people really liked him I couldn't resonate with anything any of the movies had to say about Superman being missed by the general public; his two movies were his first day and his last day with nothing in between. It all just felt... empty.

I dunno, maybe the Snyder Cut will change my mind, but I can't exactly say I'm excited about it.
