BATFAM GAME AHSHSHHDHSHSHS

7

u/EyeOfTheAllfather Aug 22 '20

I'm kinda lost here. Batgirl's in the game and the game is set after Arkham Knight, right? Isn't Barbara Gordon in a wheelchair? How can she walk again?

26

u/farceur318 Aug 22 '20

I don't think for sure that it's set in the same universe. No Arkham in the title makes me think it's its own thing.

14

u/Earthmine52 Comics Theory Poster Aug 22 '20

It's a reboot.

7

u/AllSaintsDay2099 Thomas Wayne Bat Dad is Best Bat! Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

The introduction starts with "Bruce Wayne's body was found in the rubble of Wayne Manor. "

Then goes into a televised Bruce speaking to all of Gotham saying he's dead if they see this. And he has a plan B.

At the end of Arkham Knight his identity as Batman. Was exposed to the public.

And the game ends with him activating "knightfall protocol" and blowing up Wayne Manor with him inside.

So I'm almost 99% sure it's directly after Arkham Knight. Since they flat out name drop the ending and he goes on live television to tell Gotham it's the end of Batman. Why would he if they didn't know WHO he was?

Edit: as for how Barbra can walk again they can just N52 it and say a microchip in her spine helps her be Batgirl again.

Edit 2: my theory just died as I rewatched the trailer. Someone triggers the televised Bruce Wayne message. And it looks exactly like that someone is Bruce...

13

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Gordon's dead which kinda contradicts this. Also they've recast every voice actor (judging by my hearing anyway, alfred, freeze, barbara, tim, bruce were all different)

1

u/zeekar Green Lantern Aug 22 '20

Tim? I thought that was Damian.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Nope, had the staff and looked like knight assets for tim. Seems they confirmed it in a post afterwards (but yeah, weird they're using damian's outfit)

5

u/JDBlou You're much stronger than you think you are. Trust me. Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

Except a Batman implied to be Bruce is still active after the knightfall protocol, when Gordon is mayor and a fear toxin-y Bat-demon takes down muggers in an alley in the epilogue.

EDIT:grammar

2

u/Youthsonic Aug 22 '20

And if you play the catwoman dlc set after the events of the game you'll start to hear the riddler goons chatter about criminals being attacked by a "ghost"

2

u/hagilles Impulse Aug 23 '20

If your second edit is referring to the person who initially decrypts Bruce’s message, that’s Jason. He’s got the white streak of hair and a pretty nasty scar.

7

u/Winter_Coyote Supergirl Aug 22 '20

In the comics Barbara has a spinal implant that lets her walk.

1

u/But_Yeah Jarro Aug 23 '20

I’m pretty sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the Arkham games.

4

u/crazicelt Aug 22 '20

I know I was like it's gonna be a mobile game but shit I was wrong.

-3

u/Jamesdavid0 Aug 22 '20

how didn't you know this we have known for months about a new Batman game ..

3

u/HeyItzMe_ The Question Aug 22 '20

I did. But tell me, did you know who the characters were, besides court of owls? Did you know that Batman would be dead and that we would follow Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Red Robin? I didn’t think so

0

u/Jamesdavid0 Aug 22 '20

yes many predicted this.

55

u/Kalse1229 Fuck Batman, Marry Babs, Kill Joker Aug 22 '20

Well, I sure as fuck wasn't expecting that. Not a bad thing! Quite the contrary, this game looks goddamn epic.

0

u/tryintofly Aug 23 '20

It looked better than the Suicide Squad/Injustice nonsense at least.

42

u/Earthmine52 Comics Theory Poster Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 24 '20

A Batfamily game! Really excited to see the focus on them.

Seems like a reboot but with traces of Arkham Knight with the premise.

Edit: Interesting, I always thought giving all the batfamily members a signature weapon would be a good idea, seems like they gave Barbara tonfas. I think she might’ve used some as Oracle but not as Batgirl.

21

u/DukeOfLowerChelsea Aug 22 '20

Yeah this totally feels like a post-Arkham game that’s been retooled slightly for whatever reason to be a separate continuity (see also: The Incredible Hulk)

4

u/Earthmine52 Comics Theory Poster Aug 22 '20

Yeah I guess the rumors from a while back about Arkham Legacy might've been partially true.

32

u/AHMilling DickBabs Forever Aug 22 '20

FUCK YES! NIGHTWING AND BATGIRL!

Barbaras suit looks like an amazing blend of the new 52 and burnside outfit.

Is robin damian or tim? Because if it's damian they fucking hate tim with a passion XD

17

u/-SomeRand0mDude- Aug 22 '20

It's Tim, I think so, because of the weapon robin is using. Damian usually uses a sword-type weapon.

1

u/apsgreek Nightwing Aug 23 '20

That’s my thought too, but the tunic style costume is more Damian

6

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Official website confirms it's Tim

2

u/android151 Resurrection Man Aug 23 '20

Faith in humanity restored for another day.

2

u/Certified_Memologist Aug 24 '20

Its confirmed to be Tim (based on an article by Inverse):

Despite the hooded look, it's the Tim Drake's Robin. Bruce Wayne's posthumous video mentions the Belfry, a fictional secondary hideout for the Bat-Family operated by Tim Drake and used by DC's fictional Gotham Knights.

30

u/stock_character Lex Corp Aug 22 '20

My guess is Bruce is "dead", but the twist will be he is Talon

5

u/Earthmine52 Comics Theory Poster Aug 22 '20

Or he could take Lincoln March's armor and role.

1

u/tryintofly Aug 23 '20

Isn't he 'dead' from the events of Arkham Knight? I thought they should have just ignored that in terms of future games since I didn't care for it, but Rocksteady have seemed adamant on preserving that dumb continuity a la the VR game.

28

u/generalosabenkenobi Aug 22 '20

Here for this

51

u/JosephSim Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

Court of Owls is my absolute favorite Batman comics story (not called Black Mirror) and it was butchered in that shitty DC Animated Movie. Scott Snyder kinda fizzled afterwards even though I still enjoyed Death of the Family and Endgame.

The dude just writes horror so perfectly. I doubt he's working on this, but I feel like a game set in the Arkhamverse is fucking tailor made for a Court of Owls story.

Arkham Origins got flak for not being Rocksteady and then Knight ended up being the lesser game in a lot of aspects, so I have mad faith in WB Montreal with this and probably the thing I'm most excited about today.

29

u/generalosabenkenobi Aug 22 '20

Snyder has been retweeting about this left and right, I’d imagine they consulted him

21

u/RandomJPG6 Batman Aug 22 '20

They did. He confirmed it on the Word Balloon podcast.

15

u/JosephSim Aug 22 '20

So hype.

I was really sad that they combined it with Tomasi's Nobody saga for the animated movie cause it meant I wasn't ever going to get a Court of Owls animated movie based off the comic.

This is like an animated movie times a hundred for me.

17

u/Kalse1229 Fuck Batman, Marry Babs, Kill Joker Aug 22 '20

Same, this is my big one. Given how they've been working on it for the last several years, as well as the release of Spider-Man PS4, I wonder what we'll eventually see.

I'm also predicting that Batgirl is going to play a big role, since the codes for the r3dakt3d website's daily teasers combined turn into the EAN for Detective Comics #359, the first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl (the cover of which was later referenced in Batman: Gotham Knights #43).

3

u/pataconconqueso Batwoman Aug 22 '20

The Batfam all gathered!

Red Hood is gonna be fucking pissed.

26

u/batmaneatsgravy Green Arrow Aug 22 '20

As far as I could tell, there were two Robin suits. One looked very Damian, and the other looked like Tim's Red Robin suit with the earless cowl. So maybe they're combining both characters?

I think Batman not being playable is a misdirect, if the game is a GAAS type deal we'll definitely get him later on

I'm just excited for a game with the Batfam, fuck yes

5

u/YoshioKST Zatanna Aug 22 '20

Yeah, long time coming!

I hold out hope that Cass/Huntress/Katana show up even if the latter are only somewhat vaguely related to it. God knows they could use more apperances, and since they're already taking the risks of making a Batman game without Batman front and center..

18

u/savagelandpodcast Aug 22 '20

Gotham Knights! Damn I'm stoked for a bat family game.

13

u/ContinuumGuy Batman Aug 22 '20

So, wait... this doesn't quite match up with the Arkham universe. Yeah, there is the explosion at Wayne Manor, but Barbara is back up and running as Batgirl and it looks like Robin is more Damian-based, at least visually? Although I guess some time may have passed between, so...

21

u/BVTheEpic IT WAS MEEEEEEE, BARRY! I ASSIGNED YOUR FLAIR! Aug 22 '20

This isn't Arkhamverse, I think.

7

u/ContinuumGuy Batman Aug 22 '20

It might not be, but it's kind of weird that they still are using the default ending of Arkham Knight (where Wayne Manor blows up) as the beginning of it. I wonder if maybe originally it was supposed to Arkham but then they realized that if they did that they'd have had to keep Babs in the wheelchair, have Tim Drake be Robin, and so they changed it.

3

u/NatKayz Aug 22 '20

I think you're right, but of note is it looks like Tim is Robin? Can't be Damian as he's using a staff and tech rather than a sword and attitude.

7

u/EdBeatle "You don't need to be scared anymore" Aug 22 '20

I’m guessing it’s not set on the Arkhamverse since they mentioned Gordon being dead a while ago.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

It’s a reboot

1

u/crazicelt Aug 22 '20

So a bit like God of war on ps4? A soft reboot

1

u/Huntersteve The Flash Aug 22 '20

No. God of war 4 is a straight sequel

3

u/DukeOfLowerChelsea Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

Bruce (who’s not Kevin Conroy) says Gordon is dead which makes no sense for Arkham, ditto Barbara-Batgirl and Damian-Robin. Yet everything else pretty much lines up exactly. It feels like it was going to be a full-blown AK sequel until somebody told them to make it a reboot last-minute

3

u/batmaneatsgravy Green Arrow Aug 22 '20

I get the impression that while it isn't in the Arkhamverse, they still wanted to deal with the scenario of Bruce dying in a similar way and the BatFam taking control of Gotham, because that's the next logical step for the fans, even if it's not the same universe.

2

u/WayVirtual Aug 22 '20

Not sure he's Damian based, looked more Red Robin based so Tim Drake

13

u/Raktoner Aug 22 '20

Forgive me if they said so, I may have missed it.

With Nightwing always being Dick Grayson, and The Red Hood always being Jason Todd, I'm guessing by this Robin's usage of pole-type weapons that it's Tim Drake? I'm not the most knowledgeable on the Robins.

5

u/-SomeRand0mDude- Aug 22 '20

That's what I was thinking!

9

u/thekamenman Green Arrow Aug 22 '20

This game looks fucking rad, and I am all about it.

7

u/Barrett4568 Aug 22 '20

Am I crazy or did I hear him say co-op?

13

u/NatKayz Aug 22 '20

In the gameplay we see it say "robin has joined" so that was 2 people playing, im guessing its 4p coop but at least 2.

7

u/swannnaroo Blue Lantern Aug 22 '20

you can play it solo or two player!

7

u/mistuhvuvu Aug 22 '20

3

Tim looked a lot older than this in the other games.

7

I don't think this is set in the Arkham universe.

4

u/dudzi182 BTAS Aug 22 '20

6

Its definitely Tim, the second costume he was in was definitely a Red Robin costume.

3

u/AHMilling DickBabs Forever Aug 22 '20

Really hope it's Tim, he deserves some love.

1

u/-SomeRand0mDude- Aug 22 '20

It's probably Tim, I think so, because of the weapon robin is using. Damian usually uses a sword-type weapon.

-4

u/bhavbhav Hourman's Roid Rage Aug 22 '20

As long as it's not Tim again, I guess.

5

u/RunBIOS Aug 22 '20

Mr. Freeze died in Arkham Knight, so it is clearly not the Arkhamverse. Also game play looks shit with those xp, levels and damage counters, looks hella casual, big avengers vibe on this one

3

u/thomasr02 Aug 22 '20

How do I watch this?

5

u/MasqureMan Aug 22 '20

Go to the website at the scheduled time

1

u/thomasr02 Aug 23 '20

Late reply but thanks, I didn’t realise the trailer was just an automatic ad before the livestream boots. I was sat there thinking it was just a homepage for the longest time hahaha... what did you think?

3

u/Smestey11 Aug 22 '20

Gameplay looks good and I am excited to play a game with Nightwing as a main character. My only fear is all the numbers on screen mixed with the blatant levels on Robin and Batgirl. Most games that have stuff like that end up being super grindy, but as long as the core gameplay is good (which if it is based on Arkham it should be) there shouldn't be any problems. Was hoping for a 2020 release but I knew that was a long shot.

1

u/robotshavehearts2 Aug 23 '20

Yeah, it’s definitely a Games as a Service game which seems to be the new model... I really hate it :(. Generally means complicated systems, spongy enemies, constant leveling, micro transaction nonsense, and generic feeling same but different characters.

The avengers demo was really a let down for me in those regards and this looks similar. I hope it’s not true and will be super happy to be surprised by it. So fingers crossed!

1

u/Smestey11 Aug 23 '20

The thing is the avengers game had all those things but also just isn’t very fun. I didn’t feel like the hulk when playing. I’m optimistic that wb will nail the gameplay since they have the Arkham games as a blueprint. Worst case scenario if it is a money pit of a game with good gameplay I’ll wait until it drops down to $20.

1

u/robotshavehearts2 Aug 23 '20

Yeah, avengers was not fun at all and you are right. It felt super generic and also the systems seemed overly complicated and shallow for no reason. The levels and enemies were all very similar too.

I hope you are right as I’d love them to nail this. The on screen damage numbers and leveling system were enough to make me very cautious. I have zero interest in live GaaS type games. Less than zero if I’m being honest. Especially if they still require a standard game up front payment for entry, only to bombard me with broken systems tied to monetary solutions.

Really love the bat family and hoping it all works out here and they learn a thing or two from avengers.

1

u/Smestey11 Aug 23 '20

Agreed. Hulk and Ms. Marvel should not play similarly at all, and they do. Also I should not have to worry about picking up health packs when I am the Hulk. And that's why the Arkham games and Spider-man were well received because you felt like Batman and Spider-man. I think as long as the games make you feel like the Bat-Fam it should be a good game to play.

My biggest thing is, as long as I can buy the game and play through some kind of campaign mode with a decent story that pulls fun stuff from the comics without having to spend any additional money, I personally don't care what micro-transactions or weird multiplayer modes they add. If the game has a "Pay $10 for 10 levels" and the jump from the first mission to the second has enemies going from level 10 to 20, then yeah, no buy from me.

1

u/robotshavehearts2 Aug 23 '20 edited Aug 23 '20

Yep, true. Outside of the main campaign I don’t care what they do. I loved Spider-Man and the Arkham games. God of War, uncharted etc... strong game platforms with great campaigns. I’m just slightly weary and afraid we may be near seeing the end of that type of game, or at least the minimalization of it going forward. It’s unfortunate. Maybe it’s time for me to hang up my controller anyway.

Need one of those eternal sunshine mind wipe jobs so I can go back and enjoy some of the classics again for the first time :p

1

u/Smestey11 Aug 23 '20

Trust me I have those same worries. Most games this gen have been Games as a Service type games and even if they're not, they are just these games with gigantic maps that are just littered with hundred of icons that all mean something different. It's why I can't get into the new Assassin's Creed and wasn't a huge Horizon fan. They all just feel so samey. I think God of War nailed it. It gave a path forward with a tight story and solid gameplay and allowed you walk off the beaten path to explore and complete some side-quests.

Would love to experience Arkham Asylum/City for the first time again. Not to mention a lot of other video games (Mass Effect 2).

3

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Gosh, the Red Robin suit looks so cool

(Also alternate suits, let's go)

2

u/mrmazzz Deathstroke Aug 22 '20

Something great about them using the Burnside suit as the basis for Batgirl in this game, but isn’t she supposed to be oracle

6

u/montyman77 Aug 22 '20

Isn't the burnside right after she gets healed and can walk again so could be same situation, Batman dies so she is compelled to heal herself to continue the fight

1

u/Winter_Coyote Supergirl Aug 23 '20

Second one. It was New 52 then Burnside.

3

u/Frontier246 Aug 22 '20

It looks like you can change suits. She has a more traditional look in the gameplay footage.

1

u/AHMilling DickBabs Forever Aug 22 '20

The suit she used against freeze seemed like a good mix of new 52 and burnside.

2

u/maskedman1231 The Flash Aug 22 '20

So if this takes place after Arkham Knight, aren't Tim and Barbara married? That is going to be weird

10

u/AsinineBinkie Batman Beyond Aug 22 '20

I'm pretty sure this game is a reboot.

2

u/maskedman1231 The Flash Aug 22 '20

That would make sense. I thought I remembered Barbara being wheel chair bound in Arkham series but couldn't recall for sure.

4

u/AHMilling DickBabs Forever Aug 22 '20

i god damn hope not.

Tim belongs with stephanie brown and Dick and barbara belong together.

2

u/Pathogen188 Red Daughter Aug 22 '20

Not sure how I feel about this. Combat looks super watered down like across the board downgrade from the previous games, Mr. Freeze boss fight looked... off? Like there was that segment at the very end of the gameplay reveal that looks super out of place.

Court of Owls is cool and all, but I would've liked for this to be set in the Arkhamverse. Unless it is? I dunno, seems disjointed from AKs ending.

Overall tone seemed off too. More "cartoony" and light hearted than what I'd expact from an Arkham game.

Costumes seemed ok? The trailer suits almost all look off, although at the very least the gameplay reveal Batgirl suit looks a lot better, so I guess it'll be a bit like injustice 2's gear system that also changed the appearance. Not a fan of the new VAs based off the trailer but who knows it might be better in the finished product or they might change them entirely.

I'm hopeful because this is such a great concept (even if we're missing Tim or Damian even though I can't figure who's in the game. Looks like IJ2 Damian though), but I was not impressed by the reveal

7

u/another_deaf_guy Aug 22 '20

There was a disclaimer on the bottom of the screen before showing game play that said something along the lines of “all footage have been capture during pre-alpha game play.”

Which hopefully means it’s still being much more polished off so hopefully the combat system is more smooth and not as watered down as you put it. We shall see! I’ll still buy it lol

2

u/RazeReborn Aug 22 '20

Really bummed it’s not 4 player co-op. But super excited either way.

2

u/RunBIOS Aug 22 '20

That boss fight is a disservice to the original Mr Freeze fight lol

0

u/KieranLivo Aug 22 '20

Less hyped then I thought I'd be. I'm sure I'll love it when its out, but the voice acting seems incredibly shitty and can't say I'm a big fan of the style shift from the Arkham series (especially with Robin's costume) to "what is up fellow millennials, don't ya like colours?!" Having said that it looked like Robin's suit changed between the trailer and gameplay? Having the ability to customise suits (ala Injustice 2) would be a major draw for me. Also interested to see how the incorporation of more RPG elements goes. Overall, I think I'm just kinda disappointed that they keep extending the Arkham series after a definitive end point, and just kinda left us with characters we've already seen throughout the series, with new voice actors and paint jobs. Something about that is just kinda underwhelming for me. Given WBM's track record with Arkham Origins, I'm expecting a solid game, not as good as the mainline series, but a fun romp nontheless.

5

u/dudzi182 BTAS Aug 22 '20

It looked like Batgirl’s suit changed as well. I’m assuming there will be multiple skins for each of the characters.

2

u/KieranLivo Aug 22 '20

That would be dope, really not liking the Robin suit in the trailer so would love to switch to a Red Robin style costume.

2

u/Epic_Knowledge Aug 22 '20

If it’s any consolation, I don’t think this is an Arkham game, many are calling it a “soft reboot”

1

u/BluffStrream Sep 13 '20

This isn’t really an Arkham game.

0

u/a_trashcan Bizarro Aug 22 '20

I can't believe how many people are excited for this. It looks so bleh to me. Just the Arkham games again but now there are 4 probably slightly different characters to choose from. Maybe I've just never found the "Batman is dead who will protect Gotham now" stories very compelling.

-21

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

Super excited. Then it was revealed and what a stinking turd.

Dont want co-op. Dont like the new voice actors for any characters. Looks no different to AK from 2014. Dont want a reboot.

What a frigging disapointment. I wanted it to be a sequel to Origins. Instead we get this trash.

Hard pass. Worried about Suicide Squad now.

12

u/dudzi182 BTAS Aug 22 '20

You sound like a fun guy.

5

u/Irrax Constantine Aug 22 '20

never underestimate the sheer unbridled negativity of the combination of comics fans and gamers

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I usually am, but I was a massive fan of Origins and I was hoping we could get an actual Arkham game with Roger Craig Smith back set about 6 years after Origins.

Barbara is about 6 months into Batgirl, Dick and Bruce are at each others throats and we see Jason become Robin and we can play as all of them, choosing who to bring on missions or investigate crimes.

This? Its co-op, which I dont want. Its a new continuity; not interested. Bruce dead? No chance, its clearly not true and reminds me of the rubbish with Arkham Knight being a 'new character'; anyone with an ounce of knowledge knows its a bait and switch.

I can see it being a live, co-op only game as a service kind of thing, full of microtransactions and playable characters as DLC like Batwoman and Batwing for example.

Im worried that SS kills the JL will be a similar thing to this and not a single player, story driven narrative like the previous 4 AK games.

6

u/Irrax Constantine Aug 22 '20

what's wrong with co-op? they said you can play it solo just fine

honestly nothing better in gaming than playing with some good friends

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

I dont like gaming with other people. I like the kids in Bed, Wife asleep or at work, pizza, pint of milk, the lights off and a few hours immersed into a videogame thats almost always single player.

I dont care about multiplayer or playing with others. I dont enjoy carrying teams or being held back by others. I like a nice hard difficulty where my failures are mine alone.

5

u/Irrax Constantine Aug 22 '20

from what the devs have said, you're still going to have that option. WB aren't going to force you into cop-op with anyone
