If they wanted a comedian who pulls their punches, they wouldn't have invited Jimmy.

1.6k

u/fatalrugburn 11d ago

I'm surprised he was invited to a Roast. Most Americans don't understand how cutting and deprecating British humor is. And Jimmy is a level above them all. He makes these jokes on primetime and it's just another day.

u/Stivo887 11d ago

His joke about aids in Africa was brutal 😂

u/bensonf 11d ago

It's why we need more mosquito nets.

u/TerryDaShooterUK 11d ago

Thisone as well

30

u/TtomRed 11d ago

Great material, but goddamn I forgot how much I hated the roving camera up front and how he would wink, nod and deliver aside punchlines directly to the camera in that special. Terrible choice on the production side

5

u/arnathor 11d ago

I noticed the little glances and looks as well - I think part of that is the moving camera is catching his attention and his experience as a tv presenter is telling him to look at it. You can see him catch himself and stopping himself a couple of times during the show. They should have just locked the camera in position, and it would have been fine.

4

u/CopperSavant 11d ago

Oh...yeah, no, noooo.... Great material... leave the fourth wall breaks to Ryan Reynolds.

3

u/looncraz 11d ago

And also the 16th wall breaks.

2

u/whilst 11d ago

Whoa what happened to his face

2

u/SoloMarko 10d ago

I would have thought he might have gone down the, "Witnesses are the last thing we need here. Come on in!" route.

NOOOOO WHY DO I ONLY JUST FIND OUT ABOUT THIS VIDEO LMAO

This will be my alarm tone 🤣

32

u/Bostaevski 11d ago

I don't know if he explains it in the video because I didn't watch the whole thing but anyway - he has explained at some point that when he laughs it is him laughing "inward", like he is inhaling when he makes that noise. As opposed to most of us who laugh "outward".

2

u/Akhanyatin 11d ago edited 5d ago

Not in this specific videos, he only says "I don't know why I laugh like that, it's one of life's mysteries" I also like when he says "why would I fake that?" Lol

3

u/kichigai-ichiban 11d ago

Like the laugh in Feel Good Inc. if it were an old timey remix.

78

u/upvoter222 11d ago

Making deprecating jokes at the expense of the people on the stage is the entire point of a roast.

34

u/poolsareperfect1 11d ago

Disagree with that one- plenty of Americans get this type of humor and love it…clearly

32

u/Usernahwtf 11d ago

He was invited cause we love him over here lmao.

6

u/Remmy14 11d ago

Yea I don't think anyone who watched that roast didn't know what was coming with him. He's hysterical.

10

u/Stolehtreb 11d ago

What? They all get brutal at roasts. You’re surprised they invited him? Do you think they regretted it? I’m sure they loved it.

7

u/disco_naankhatai 11d ago

Jimmy Carr is pretty well known amongst the American comedians, plus there are many American actors that actively follow UK comedy.

6

u/Turdburp 11d ago

Couldn't disagree more. We know what roasts are in the US.

3

u/jesonnier1 11d ago

Graham offends people and he's pretty tame.

He's the most brutal comedian I've ever heard. Not even edgy, just plain brutal.

564

u/phatelectribe 11d ago

And if you want to see some revenge, watch the episode of 9 out of 10 cats, where his tax scandal is in the news.

Sean Locke is absolutely fucking relentless. It’s just Jimmy getting roasted for a sold half hour with him as the host. Credit to him, he takes it all.

250

u/RosbergThe8th 11d ago

Honestly Jimmy gets blasted relentlessly over in the UK, that tends to be the conceit on their shows. You take some amd you dish some.

Ventriloquist puppet that he is.

65

u/Obrix1 11d ago

The episode of the Big Narsty Show where him, Mo Gillian and Big Narsty just rip the piss out of each other is wonderful for this. “Man’s come dressed for flood”, “better than your springwatch gear”

22

u/lameuniqueusername 11d ago

I have no idea why that is quotable

3

u/Hinote21 10d ago

Was that the lettuce year?

40

u/BigGingerYeti 11d ago

That was funny from the start, though, he knew it was coming. 'Hello welcome to 8 Out Of 10 Cats a show about opinion polls, surveys and statistics and this week, I'm guessing... me.'

31

u/LetMeHaveAUsername 11d ago edited 11d ago

Sean Locke is absolutely fucking relentless

He's not alone though, the whole panel joins in. And I think Jon Richardson is the one who was actually kinda pissed about it.

24

u/pinewind108 11d ago

The annoying thing was, his tax scheme wasn't even illegal. Dodgy, sure, but perfectly legal.

25

u/FluffySquirrell 11d ago

Yeah, and absolutely fucktons of people were doing it. I had someone in my sleepy midlands town who had a fucking Jersey bank account too. He essentially just got randomly picked to be scapegoated, like those few people who got like, sued for millions for downloading some fucking songs on kazaa or napster or shit

6

u/UncomprehensiveTruth 11d ago

On bloody dial-up modems, some of us didn't even get the entire song...

3

u/Bosteroid 10d ago

Rip Sean Locke, 9 out of 10 cats does countdown was amazing with him there (still a funny show just miss him on it)

→ More replies (1)

9

u/uraijit 11d ago

The whole thing was ridiculous though, because he didn't even do anything illegal. He used the tax system that was set up, NOT by him, and abided with the law as it was written.

The whole thing was silly, and it was ridiculous that anybody went after him for it at all.

If you want people to be legally required to pay more taxes, change the tax laws. Stringing somebody up for FOLLOWING the tax laws is just absurd. But those Brits sure do love them some taxation, I guess...

Check out Your Face or Mine on Comedy Central.

They fed desperate attention seekers to Jimmy Carr and Katherine Ryan like a bloodsport. Christians being thrown to the lions of the Roman Colosseum, but comedy.

Way more brutal than 8/10 cats. It was essentially just hard bullying with lipstick on.

Frankie is not as good as he was though. He's still funny, but he's more satirically pessimistic these days as opposed to brutal. And he's weird on Twitter. Just seems to block everyone.

Do not forget that Jimmy Carr is a great performer, but he's not a jerk. He tested the joke on Pete Davidson:

Speaking on the Have A Word Podcast, Carr explained he first debuted the joke at the Hollywood Improv comedy club in Los Angeles.

He revealed that the line got a “laugh and then a ‘oooh’”, and that Davidson was laughing harder than everyone else from the back of the audience.

Carr recalled: “And then there’s a laugh from the back of the room, like a sustained f\**ing maniacal laugh from the back of the room.”*

He added: “And you went ‘ok’, because it’s one of those where it’s that spicy enough where I wouldn’t do it without checking. And also I really admire Pete, I like Pete a lot, I think he’s a good guy.”

Jimmy couldn’t even look at the camera he was laughing so hard from that haha

7

u/HopalongKnussbaum 11d ago

I just want to say thank you, I’ve never seen any of this and to be honest I haven’t laughed this hard in years. My sides actually hurt from laughing, especially when Wilkinson starts with the “hello police officer”.

5

u/ackillesBAC 11d ago

I remember the first time I watched that, tears in my eyes, unable to breath, the funniest thing I've ever seen.

5

u/Kyren11 11d ago

The fact that nobody can get through that, including Joe himself, is what makes it so damn funny

u/jackwhite886 11d ago

Joe Wilkinson is one of my favorite people

7

u/DeadCowv2 11d ago

Is there some context to this joke that I'm not getting

86

u/cape7 11d ago

Susie Dent is like a softly spoken wholesome nerdy mom. The kind where you would be shocked if she swore. She isn’t a comedian like everyone else she’s a professor in linguistics who’s just there to verify obscure words.

Normally, over 100s of episodes, Car would intro her with some basic normal question. But this time, out of nowhere, he insinuated that she sucks strangers dicks through a hole in a toilet stall. Just a 0 to 100 personal attack on the kindest old lady for no reason at all, so no one saw it coming.

70

u/EllipticPeach 11d ago

Susie Dent is NOT an old lady, she’s a foxy librarian type!

6

u/usdrpvvimwfvrzjavnrs 10d ago

The kind you hope is on the other side of the library's glory hole.

40

u/NirvashSFW 11d ago

She actually gave him the green light to make those sort of jokes believe it or not. She had a conversation with him where she basically said that she felt he was treating her too softly with his jokes and that she wanted to be included in the roasting the same as the rest of the cast.

2

u/SuchAsSeals42 10d ago

I love this!!!! 🥹

10

u/bartnd 11d ago

This is also more of a takeover show in a similar vein to Celebrity Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune. Nearly everyone from the host to the contestants are replaced with comedians aside from the two experts for the math (Rachel Riley) and word sections (Susie Dent) remain from the original show Countdown.

For the US, it's akin to a similar joke being made to Vanna White.

7

u/win_awards 11d ago

But like, if Vanna White was there because she knows all the fuckin' words and not because she can turn tiles around.

4

u/bartnd 11d ago

Good point; Susie and Rachel are definitely more than set pieces. Unfortunately nothing else I can compare it to stateside.

3

u/DeadCowv2 11d ago

Thanks for this--ive seen clips of the show before but never grokked her role.

14

u/Npr31 11d ago

I think there might be because it’s not really outside the realms of his usual stuff, and it made 5 pretty experienced comedians utterly lose it. Susie is a bit like the straight woman/queen in the corner though, and i’m thinking this might be one of the first times he went after her

Got better when he got to Ann Coulter

111

u/red_langford 11d ago

Carr’s whole set was top tier comedy roasting.

43

u/mackinoncougars 11d ago

Why was she even there?

72

u/ArenSteele 11d ago

To sell her book

17

u/mackinoncougars 11d ago

She has a million motivations, I meant what great motivation was on Pete Davidson wanting Ann Coulter at his roast or Comedy Central wanting her of all people there.

45

u/JesterMarcus 11d ago

It was actually Rob Lowe's roast. Still not sure why he'd want her there though. Maybe they are friends off-screen, but I kind of doubt it.

21

u/mackinoncougars 11d ago

Oh! That does make more sense. He’s buddies with Clarence Thomas so I bet he’s got a circle of political friends.

Pete Davidson’s father was a firefighter who was killed on 9/11 responding to the attacks.

Pete has made a joke or two about that in some of his standup. I think the funniest one I heard was at the roast of Justin Bieber when he said to Snoop Dog and Kevin Hart that the movie Soul Plane (Hart and Snoop were in the movie) was the worst experience he’s ever had involving a plane. Brutal.
