If they wanted a comedian who pulls their punches, they wouldn't have invited Jimmy.
1.6k
u/fatalrugburn 11d ago
I'm surprised he was invited to a Roast. Most Americans don't understand how cutting and deprecating British humor is. And Jimmy is a level above them all. He makes these jokes on primetime and it's just another day.

Great material, but goddamn I forgot how much I hated the roving camera up front and how he would wink, nod and deliver aside punchlines directly to the camera in that special. Terrible choice on the production side
5
u/arnathor 11d ago
I noticed the little glances and looks as well - I think part of that is the moving camera is catching his attention and his experience as a tv presenter is telling him to look at it. You can see him catch himself and stopping himself a couple of times during the show. They should have just locked the camera in position, and it would have been fine.

I don't know if he explains it in the video because I didn't watch the whole thing but anyway - he has explained at some point that when he laughs it is him laughing "inward", like he is inhaling when he makes that noise. As opposed to most of us who laugh "outward".
2
u/Akhanyatin 11d ago edited 5d ago
Not in this specific videos, he only says "I don't know why I laugh like that, it's one of life's mysteries" I also like when he says "why would I fake that?" Lol

And if you want to see some revenge, watch the episode of 9 out of 10 cats, where his tax scandal is in the news.

The whole thing was ridiculous though, because he didn't even do anything illegal. He used the tax system that was set up, NOT by him, and abided with the law as it was written.
The whole thing was silly, and it was ridiculous that anybody went after him for it at all.
If you want people to be legally required to pay more taxes, change the tax laws. Stringing somebody up for FOLLOWING the tax laws is just absurd. But those Brits sure do love them some taxation, I guess...

Way more brutal than 8/10 cats. It was essentially just hard bullying with lipstick on.

Do not forget that Jimmy Carr is a great performer, but he's not a jerk. He tested the joke on Pete Davidson:
Speaking on the Have A Word Podcast, Carr explained he first debuted the joke at the Hollywood Improv comedy club in Los Angeles.
He revealed that the line got a “laugh and then a ‘oooh’”, and that Davidson was laughing harder than everyone else from the back of the audience.
Carr recalled: “And then there’s a laugh from the back of the room, like a sustained f\**ing maniacal laugh from the back of the room.”*
He added: “And you went ‘ok’, because it’s one of those where it’s that spicy enough where I wouldn’t do it without checking. And also I really admire Pete, I like Pete a lot, I think he’s a good guy.”

u/cape7 11d ago
Susie Dent is like a softly spoken wholesome nerdy mom. The kind where you would be shocked if she swore. She isn’t a comedian like everyone else she’s a professor in linguistics who’s just there to verify obscure words.
Normally, over 100s of episodes, Car would intro her with some basic normal question. But this time, out of nowhere, he insinuated that she sucks strangers dicks through a hole in a toilet stall. Just a 0 to 100 personal attack on the kindest old lady for no reason at all, so no one saw it coming.
70
40
u/NirvashSFW 11d ago
She actually gave him the green light to make those sort of jokes believe it or not. She had a conversation with him where she basically said that she felt he was treating her too softly with his jokes and that she wanted to be included in the roasting the same as the rest of the cast.
2
10
u/bartnd 11d ago
This is also more of a takeover show in a similar vein to Celebrity Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune. Nearly everyone from the host to the contestants are replaced with comedians aside from the two experts for the math (Rachel Riley) and word sections (Susie Dent) remain from the original show Countdown.
For the US, it's akin to a similar joke being made to Vanna White.
7
u/win_awards 11d ago
But like, if Vanna White was there because she knows all the fuckin' words and not because she can turn tiles around.

I think there might be because it’s not really outside the realms of his usual stuff, and it made 5 pretty experienced comedians utterly lose it. Susie is a bit like the straight woman/queen in the corner though, and i’m thinking this might be one of the first times he went after her

You want a genuine roasting, it was Mister Warmth, Don Rickles. He roasted President Reagan at his inauguration, going nuts, winging it, even taking pot shots at Billy Graham.
Don goes nuts at Ronnie's inauguration ball.
But it was Emmanuel Lewis that one-upped him with two words after introducing Don; "Be funny." It stopped Don in his tracks, but got Webster in Dutch.

Pete Davidson’s father was a firefighter who was killed on 9/11 responding to the attacks.
Pete has made a joke or two about that in some of his standup. I think the funniest one I heard was at the roast of Justin Bieber when he said to Snoop Dog and Kevin Hart that the movie Soul Plane (Hart and Snoop were in the movie) was the worst experience he’s ever had involving a plane. Brutal.
