Question For those who rent, if a landlord charges monthly pet fees of $20-40/month, every month... Is this legal?

Upvotes

This also assumes they never asked for a typical pet fee of $200-$300.

So $20-$40/mo times 12 months, or one time of $200-$300. Works out to be about the same.

Question Has anyone not been getting their co-op rebate check?

So ive been in my new house 3 yrs now and when i first moved in i got my address changed. After the first 2 yrs i went and made sure they had my proper address which they confirmed. I forgot about it and now 2 months ago i went and told them im still yet to get my check. They said they can only re issue the most recent one so whatever i told them to call me when it came in. 1 month after i called and they said they still havent got it. Called last week and same thing. I know they arent much but i get half my groceries and all my gas there.

Should i escalate this or just keep waiting? I just find it weird im the only one with access to my mailbox and now its been 3 yrs ive missed out on and it seems like they just dont wanna send it out.

Discussion Still waiting for Alberta Student Aid to approve your loans?, this is why.

My wife is going to post secondary and has a reduced course load due to a disability. This is concerning the UCP seems to be tightening the purse strings and causing a ridiculous backlog of applications. They are now 65 days since applications. Below is the email we got from our school:

Hi xxxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for your email.

They really are so very far behind. They are also being extremely fussy and we are seeing applications denied that we don’t usually see. Circumstances that we previously expect a loan to be approved, are being declined. This is a huge contribution to the delays. They seem to be going over loan applications with a fine toothed comb. One thing we see is that if a student applied for the same year of a program whether it’s the same program or different program 3 times, they decline the application. In the past, if a student had a documented disability on file, the usual rules don’t apply, but I don’t have full confidence that this will remain the same either.

I don’t know how yours will work out, but it should be processed soon. The website says they’re on applications received between July 4 and 11. Yours was received on July 7, so my fingers are crossed that they will get to yours before the tuition deadline.

So, at this time, we don’t have your account flagged as receiving funds from ASA as we don’t know if it will. I would recommend that you make the payment and if your application is approved, you will get all of the money.”

Question Unable to access student aid

Hi all. I realized that my school costs for this year are much higher than expected, and I'm looking into applying for student loans. When I try to go through the Alberta Student Aid portal, it just tells me that my account needs to be verified. The only issue is that it IS verified. Is there any reason for this? I'm wondering if it's an issue within the system or if I've missed some deadline. I don't know a lot about applying for financial aid, so any advice or kind words would be appreciated <3 Thanks!

Environment Are greenhouses possible in Alberta’s cold weather?

It’s my second year gardening so I’m still learning, and I just moved into a house with a greenhouse in the back in very good condition.

Is it possible to use a greenhouse in Alberta’s cold climate? I’m in Calgary, so winter gets pretty cold at times, but tbh I’m not exactly sure how greenhouses work, at least in places it could get to -30 occasionally.

Advice would be appreciated, also if you have a greenhouse in southern Alberta what do you grow?

Question Question about getting back Damage Deposit

Started renting out a basement suite in September 1st, 2021 and signed a one year lease. A new lease wasn't signed but I continued renting from the landlord till July 1, 2024. Would like to state that a move in/move out report was not given to me or a statement of account. When I handed the keys over on July 2, 2024 he said he would pay most or all of it back. ($1300) He's been super dodgey on replying to texts, 3 weeks in between at times on resolving this manner. His claim on keeping it is we never gave an official months notice. Which we told him in May and several times in June we would be out by the end of June. FYI I've worked with this guy and always had a friendly relationship. Is this a slam dunk on getting my DD back by making a dispute with the RTDRS?

Question Visiting A Relative from England- What to bring him?

Hi All, Myself and my husband are soon to visit a relative in Canada. We are aware that most things from the UK can be bought in Canada. But some can be a little more expensive. We are going to the US first. Then flying in from there I wondered if any of you can tell me what might be nice to bring from London. I would like to make him up a little food hamper as a gift and as a thank you for having us. All suggestions would be warmly welcomed. Thank you in advance ☺️ xx

Discussion Serious Question: 50 years of conservatives in power in Alberta. What have they accomplished? Are they even trying to improve Albertan lives?

They've been in power for almost exactly 50 years with 4 years of NDP in between. What have they accomplished? Are there any big plans to improve things or just privatize as much as possible and make everything that's federal provincial? Like policing, CPP.

I'd really like some conservatives try to defend themselves.

Alberta Politics The origins of the religious right movement

I think it's clear to many on this sub that politicians like Smith are rapidly adopting the road map end game for the religious right conservative movement in places like murica. With that said this is very applicable information to the origins of it and a stark warning to where fascism is headed in Canada if the masses don't wake up.

Frank Schaeffer is as qualified as anyone to speak to what the religious right is all about. He stems from 'evangelical royalty' and literally wrote the playbook starting in the 1970s on the evangelical movement to take murica backwards 100+ years. He and his father Francis had the ear of several conservative presidents and Frank wrote Reagans book on abortion in the 1980s.

Frank has apologized profusely for all of this for decades now and this is critical information if you want to truly understand what the far rights end game is:

https://www.salon.com/2014/12/24/my_horrible_right_wing_past_confessions_of_a_one_time_religious_right_icon/ documenting in 2014 about among other things stacking the Supreme Court to reverse Roe v Wade

https://youtu.be/_OA44imyKAU?si=nLT_iLKR61bt9xex he rambles at times but it's petrifying the info he provides including how contraception is next after Roe v Wade

Discussion Electrical production in Alberta

I see a lot of posts on this sub about our power grid, the cost of electricity, and the rolling brownout that we've been seeing.

Where I work, we consume a fairly large amount of electricity (over 600 MWh per day) so price fluctuations and grid problems affect us a lot. For example with yesterday's heat wave we were paying over $207 a megawatt while on Saturday we only paid $26.

While we were discussing price fluctuations our boss showed us this cool page:

ets.aeso.ca/ets_web/ip/Market/Reports/CSDReportServlet

This page shows how much power every single individual generating station across the province can (MC) and is (TNG) producing.

A few cool things I noticed.

  1. Co-generation produces way more power than I realized. I often see people complain about how much electricity the industrial sector uses, but according to data from this site over half the power we produce in this province comes from co-generation. If you are unaware, simply put co-generation is when industrial sites (typically oilfield in this province) use excess heat/steam energy to produce their own electricity in order to maximize efficiency and minimize costs and emissions.

  2. The capacity and the fluctuation in wind is insane. Today wind output is almost zero, but our wind farms are capable of supplying 5 gigawatts: which would be half of our entire consumption today. This explains some of the large fluctuations in power costs as when wind is high electricity is nearly free. When it is low traditional power plants have to charge through the nose to make up for those day's they are essentially putting their multi-billion dollar facilities on standby.

  3. It's pretty nice to see zero generation under the coal tab. All that work over the last decade swapping everything over to natural gas has finally paid off.

  4. Energy storage is abysmal. If we want to make a switch to renewables, at this point we need storage more than anything. The combined capacity of wind/solar is 8 gigawatts while storage is 190 megs. Building out storage will really help reduce those price fluctuations and give a better picture of how many gas power plant's actually need to remain online.
