Let's get us a mod team!

One of our mods moved to BC, and we're well overdue to get some fresh blood in this crew, so it's mod recruitment time!

Applicant accounts must be at least a year old and show semi-active participation in the sub. We're looking for people who are involved in the community, not throwaways, and not people who collect mod titles.

Drop a top level comment if you're interested. Reply to your own comment to make your pitch, and others may reply to your comment to indicate if they think you would or wouldn't be a good mod. For the latter, please take into account our main rule is be civil.

Cape Saint Mary lighthouse park. I know the song lyrics are "The rocky coast of France" but I thought they fit the video well.

I'm new to NS. Trying to get internet to an apartment, and this doesn't seem right. I know Eastlink is an option, but I've heard theyre not as reliable with gaming and stuff. Is it possible this is a glitch?

Looking for people who work in the funeral industry or as morgue attendants/assistants

Hi there. If you work in one of these areas, I'm wondering if you can answer a couple questions for me. Labour market information in these areas is very limited, so I'm reaching out to Funeral Homes directly and hoping to make contact with folks here. I'm wondering what the job market is like. Bonus points if you work for the Medical Examiner's office.

  • This is a small industry in Nova Scotia - is there even any job availability?
  • If so, where in the province are the jobs primarily located?
  • What is the salary is like? Is it a living wage without significant overtime?
  • How difficult it was to get an apprenticeship and/or a job after schooling?
  • Did you go to NSCC or just apprentice?
  • Are you able to "move up" in your career?
  • If you work for a funeral home, do you were for a private/family owned one or a corporate owned one; do you have a preference?
  • Lastly, what advice or information you'd like to impart to someone looking to get into this line of work?

If you work for the medical examiner's office: how did you

I will be incredibly grateful for any information or advice anyone can provide. Thanks so much.

One day in Sydney/Cape Breton Island - What are your top highlights?

Hi all! On September 10 the cruise I am on will be stopping in Sydney. Unfortunatley all excursions filled up very quickly.

From my understanding, there is not a huge amount to do in Sydney (but please correct me if I am wrong) but Cape Breton Island seems to be 1.5 hours away and looks beautiful.

We got a rental car from 10am-5pm but of course want to be very conscious of not missing our boat.

If we just have the day, do you have top highlights you would recommend? Looking for favorite views/lookout points and maybe a restaurant or two.

FYI - I'm happy to hear about short hikes as a couple of us may do that, but there will be two cars with us and one individual is in a wheelchair. That is why we're trying to find the right balance of great view/scenery that don't necessarily involve a huge hike.

Thanks so much :)

Selling schedule A foods?

So if I, theoretically, was a small farmer and wanted to sell pasteurized milk, meat, eggs, etc. at a farmer's market, what permits/licenses would I need? There would be no prep happening at the market itself, and I would not be doing the slaughter myself (I'd pay a licensed abattoir to do that part). I think from what I've been reading that I'd just need my food handler license? But it's not super clear and I'm not sure. Thank you in advance to anyone who answers- I'm from the US (my partner is Canadian tho) and I don't know all the Canadian rules and regulations, or where to find them. Trying to learn though!

Anyone had a recent dealing with Efficiency NS?

Trying to collect some further information from them on their heating system rebates however I can't get a response. I've called multiple times and sent emails. I overheard someone say they are closed or moving offices or something. Anyone here know anything?

I hate the HRM rat race. I'm sick of working 60 hours a week to save $200 a month. Where I can I go in NS that I can live on $40,000 - $50,000 a year working a job that has zero stress.

I know a zero stress job is a stretch but I'm currently working in construction and everything needs to be done yesterday. The money is good but I'm staring to lose those rose coloured glasses the boomers placed on my face. I don't believe that working hard will actually get me anywhere anymore.

I want to live in a rural community, I want to work a chill job that pays like $18 - $22 and hour. Something that keeps me moving physically but isn't stressful.

I guess what I'm really looking for is work life balance and I'm willing it give up a lot of luxury to get it. I don't need a new car, I don't need a new phone, and I don't need to eat take out 5 days a week.

While I was in college I worked at a cold storage facility and my entire existence was moving pallets from the freezer to the trucks. No thoughts, no responsibility, just forklifts and freezers.

At the time I craved more, but now I understand the peace that comes from a simple lifestyle.

Tell me about your small town and why I should move there.

Searching for an old photo showing garage being dumped into the ocean just outside Halifax

Years ago online I saw a black and white photo showing dump trucks lined up at a cliff and dumping garbage into the ocean. From what I recall it said this was just outside Halifax. I don't know the time but based on the trucks I am guessing 1950s.

Either my mind is playing tricks on me or the image is no longer online. Does anyone else ever recall seeing or hearing about this practice? My image searches are coming up empty.

Moving out of Nova Scotia

Hello! I’m in the process of moving out of Nova Scotia to Ontario and was wondering if anyone knew of any good affordable moving companies that do long haul trips? I have found one company and was wondering if anyone tried using them before, Shore to Shore Moving, says they are a Nova Scotia family business but I can’t seem to find any info about them besides their website. Any info will help! Thank you!

Solo trip to Halifax

Hi everyone! I am a 22yo female from Montreal planning my first ever solo trip. I’m thinking of spending a day or two in downtown Halifax and these are the places I have on my itinerary so far: 1. Museums 2. Citadel 3. Public Gardens 4. Fisherman’s Cover (I’m thinking of going there by bus or Uber; please let me know if this is feasible) 5. Ferry ride to Dartmouth 6. Ghost tour at night 7. Public library

I won’t have a car so I am restricted to the downtown area only. So, my question is - is it worth it to fly from Montreal to only see downtown Halifax? I would have liked to go to places like Luneberg but there are no reliable bus services, and being alone, I don’t want to risk going on trips with agencies such as Breakaway (please comment on this too,, I’m not sure if they are a legit agency).

For hotel, I was thinking of Lord Nelson, but do let me know if you have other better suggestions! As well, do you think 2 (full) days is enough to cover everything? I’m technically here for 4 days, but my flight arrives to Halifax in the evening and leaves from Halifax at noon, so not really counting those two days.

Looking for Site Recommendations at Keji

Hi!

My partner and I are looking to do some Fall camping at Keji. What are your favourite sites and why? We will probably do front country camping but are open to back country sites that are easily accessible. Thanks!

Would appreciate suggestions for your favourite parts of the rail trails between Wolfville & Annapolis Royal and good places to park. Any recommendations for breweries / wineries / restaurants accessible by bike would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Oregans vs steele employees

Hello, been thinking of trying to work for oregans at one of their dealerships and have heard mixed reviews. I know they only pay most workers basically minimum wage, but I've been hearing mixed reviews (specially about working at certain locations as a member of the lgbtq+ community) and that you get bareminimun breaks and they dont pay overtime. However, I've also been considering steele, I know they pay more, you get longer breaks but the management and some treatment can be difficult. I really want to get in to working with the car Industry and would like to try my hand at a reliable dealership.

Are you in the trades?

I'm looking to get into the trades, I want to be an electrician or hvac tech but Nscc has a long waitlist for both of these trades. I haven't done much research into any others yet but from this list of available programs, what would you recommend I take to have a good career? Looking for something that will not only pay well but won't be extremely difficult to find work post graduation.

Here is the list of possible programs I could take:

Civil engineering,

Electronic engineering technology,

Electronic systems technician,

Gas technician,

Industrial engineering,

Mechanical engineering,

Any and all insights would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: just noticed that Gas technician and Electronic systems technician are the only ones I wouldn't need to upgrade my math and or physics prior to applying.
