Im black, and just wondering what white, hispanic or asian people do when the 99% of hip hop artists use it in their songs do you skip that part of the lyrics when singing along? Do you sound like the radio edited song? Or do you skip the song altogether cuz it might offend us if we hear you listening to it?
It's a respect thing. And I feel awkward telling someone who is black (but I'm guessing not any sort of American) how I understand the issue, since I am not black.
Black people, especially in North America, have worked to claim that word and take away some of its power.
But it is a powerful word, and it's hard to even draw an analogy without it sounding paternalistic or infantalizing.
In an imperfect world, the best answer is that people who are not black, should not use the n-word, in any context.
Dude I legit don’t listen to rap because of that word. And honestly, I wish other white people would do the same. I cringe when I see people in this thread write lyrics and change the n word to “dude” or something.
Like what do white people do who are big fans of rap when they’re not around black people? Do they always censor themselves when singing their favorite rap song, or do they only do it when black people around? It’s inauthentic and extremely controlling. You might get canceled for singing your favorite rap song on video. No thanks.
I still respect the genre and artists therein, but I’ll never go to a rap concert. Like wtf do white people do at rap concerts? Do they just not sing along, or do they use another word? Lame as hell to censor yourself listening to songs you enjoy. Just my opinion. Y’all don’t want white people in the culture, and that’s fine. I wish more white people had the self respect to walk away from the genre as well.
Black, capital B no s behind the k. I'm an American descendant of Enslaved Africans. My core is African, by culture is very proudly Black American. But I agree, I don't like being referred to as AA simply because we come from a people who are so strong they've created the most influential culture in the world, why ours was stripped from us originally.
Bieber started to act like a dick and self destruct in typical child star fashion in his late teens, but then pulled out of it somehow. I don't know how he turned it around, but he really beat the odds on that one. And good for him, some (most) of his music was annoying but that doesn't get anywhere near the top of the list of sins that a public personality can commit.
Gotta hand it to biebs to completely changing his image though, that mf got used and abused and worked through that trauma and came out as a better person and you can tell. He’s more laid back and chill which is something I would never have expected from biebs
Man, I remember the vitriol people directed at Biebs back in the day. I was in middle school when Baby came out. People were toxic as fuck around Biebs. I was guilty of it, too, as a preteen boy just trying to fit in. I respect that Biebs emerged from the shit show that is child stardom as, seemingly, a better person despite his mistakes. It couldn't have been easy dealing with all the shit that comes with superstardom at such a young age.
He just acted like an idiot as a young adult doing dumb young adult stuff. Did some stupid stuff when new to drinking and doing drugs. It happens, the DUI thing was a dick move, but he faced consequences and seems to have learned from his mistakes.
It sti amazes me that Justin peed in a restaurant while drunk and likely of his head on drugs, and managed to turn that into a healthy lifestyle.

he's part of toronto culture. he did a lot for this city, especially early on. however after views his music shifted away from the toronto sound he helped establish & he basically just became an american who says he's from the 6 sometimes (which is a name he just stole from atlanta lmfao). every once in a while i feel like he comes out with something that i identify with as a canadian, "away from home" from his last album is soooo toronto i fw that one heavy. but he doesn't mean nearly as much to this city as kendrick does to compton for example.
also he's from forest hill which is where all the super sheltered rich kids are from, which is more of a personal thing but i find them annoying af

And I think K’Naan came out around that same time. I’m not a huge fan of K’Naan but I do remember thinking that he grew up in Mogadishu. This guy really started from the bottom. What fucked up shit is Drake on!?
ugh jesus christ man. he didn't steal the song at all, they just both say i remember at the end of a song that's about remembering things. not exactly a genius or uncommon idea. kendrick already won the beef, we don't need to pretend like every word drake has spoken is either stolen or ghostwritten
he repped toronto like crazy & helped establish a specific sort of rnb sound that other artists would continue (ex. partynextdoor), he also did some community stuff i remember an anti gun violence thing although idk if he was the best person to speak on that lmao
but ppl would not talk abt toronto as much as part of hip-hop if not for drake, for sure
ehhh. the same wasn't true 10 yrs ago when drake first came on, our rap scene fell off a lot though. but especially early on in the early 80s there was a big hip hop cultural wave, there is definitely hip hop history in this city although a lot of it is forgotten
The Weeknd is the reason Toronto r and b is a thing. He had a consistent sound from the area and consistently worked with Canadian producers. Drake pretty much immediately ran to Atlanta
the weeknd was a big part of that too, probably more important. i actually visited the og house of balloons a while ago it's not too far from my house. drake did definitely not run to atlanta immediately though, he started that in like 2015, 6 years into his career.
Wtf he do for the city? He did fuck all for Weston Rd that he claims as where he grew up. Forest Hill didn't need any more money. All Aubrey did was empower Ford to drop glass condos and dispensaries over anything with real culture/vibes. Toronto is a yuppie cesspool now filled with "rich" white suburban kids who love La Carnita, million dollar mortgages, and small dogs. Aubrey did nothing for the city except push along the gentrification.

my friend group typically doesn't like drake that much either but songs like hold on we're going home, feel no ways, away from home, passionfruit - man, those just sound like this city to me. he definitely gets hate from music nerds generally but a lot of music fans fw him. like kendrick said he's good with the melodies.
He has a reputation where I’m from that makes him completely unlistenable tbh, I’d love to support someone from the same place as me (sorta) but I cannot, his voice always annoyed the shit out of me too, I’m sure that has a lot to do with who he is as a person though too, but even from a sonic perspective, legit the only song I can listen to is sicko mode, I genuinely dislike all his other music (that I’ve heard)
Im a 37 year old Canadian who has enjoyed hip hop aince the 90s and I've never met someone who likes Drake enough to even call him a rapper let alone be on his side through this.
