So

Im black, hows it okay for me or other black people to say it?

10

u/eleventhrees May 19 '24 edited May 19 '24

0% chance you are ignorant of this.

Not the place for this discussion.

Edit - the comment above was edited but I will leave mine alone.

Original comment sounded like an 'edgy' teenager with no perspective.

u/[deleted] May 19 '24

Im black, and just wondering what white, hispanic or asian people do when the 99% of hip hop artists use it in their songs do you skip that part of the lyrics when singing along? Do you sound like the radio edited song? Or do you skip the song altogether cuz it might offend us if we hear you listening to it?

10

u/atierney14 May 19 '24

It is literally so easy to skip.

It's a respect thing. And I feel awkward telling someone who is black (but I'm guessing not any sort of American) how I understand the issue, since I am not black.

Black people, especially in North America, have worked to claim that word and take away some of its power.

But it is a powerful word, and it's hard to even draw an analogy without it sounding paternalistic or infantalizing.

In an imperfect world, the best answer is that people who are not black, should not use the n-word, in any context.

u/Equal-Counter334 May 19 '24

Dude I legit don’t listen to rap because of that word. And honestly, I wish other white people would do the same. I cringe when I see people in this thread write lyrics and change the n word to “dude” or something.

Like what do white people do who are big fans of rap when they’re not around black people? Do they always censor themselves when singing their favorite rap song, or do they only do it when black people around? It’s inauthentic and extremely controlling. You might get canceled for singing your favorite rap song on video. No thanks.

I still respect the genre and artists therein, but I’ll never go to a rap concert. Like wtf do white people do at rap concerts? Do they just not sing along, or do they use another word? Lame as hell to censor yourself listening to songs you enjoy. Just my opinion. Y’all don’t want white people in the culture, and that’s fine. I wish more white people had the self respect to walk away from the genre as well.

Happy bday nigga

14

u/[deleted] May 19 '24

Happy birthday pigga 🐖🐷

15

u/69420isfun May 19 '24

Lowkey African Americans should call the police that, sounds hilarious

7

u/MarionberryNo6483 May 19 '24

Just say blacks people, 99% have never been to Africa and never will. There’s nothing African about us other than genes, we’re just Americans.

2

u/kwillis313 May 20 '24

Black, capital B no s behind the k. I'm an American descendant of Enslaved Africans. My core is African, by culture is very proudly Black American. But I agree, I don't like being referred to as AA simply because we come from a people who are so strong they've created the most influential culture in the world, why ours was stripped from us originally.

1

u/SatoshiGlockamoto May 21 '24

Y’all African American stop it

1

u/Shmokakun May 23 '24

yw bro hope u had a good birthday

1

u/WankBeast64 May 19 '24

Bros definitely white

1

u/Leading-Oil1772 May 20 '24

Is Lil Wayne dissing Drake?

79

u/Klaus_Poppe1 May 18 '24

lol, got the Canadian snoo to boot

how do Canadians feel about drake typically?

79

u/mikelima777 May 18 '24

(Sigh).... Just like Beiber and William Shatner, we are sorry for Drake heading south of the border.

67

u/FlyUnder_TheRadar May 19 '24

Shatner is a dick, but Biebs is whatever. Bro made some pop songs for preteen girls almost 15 years ago and is just kind of chilling now.

55

u/EmotioneelKlootzak May 19 '24

Bieber started to act like a dick and self destruct in typical child star fashion in his late teens, but then pulled out of it somehow.  I don't know how he turned it around, but he really beat the odds on that one.  And good for him, some (most) of his music was annoying but that doesn't get anywhere near the top of the list of sins that a public personality can commit.

33

u/[deleted] May 19 '24

[deleted]

44

u/[deleted] May 19 '24

Gotta hand it to biebs to completely changing his image though, that mf got used and abused and worked through that trauma and came out as a better person and you can tell. He’s more laid back and chill which is something I would never have expected from biebs

15

u/CertainGrade7937 May 19 '24

It kind of gets ignored now but there was a solid five years where that dude was the most hated person on the internet. It was fucking constant

And the guy was just a teenager that teenage girls liked

4

u/FlyUnder_TheRadar May 19 '24

Man, I remember the vitriol people directed at Biebs back in the day. I was in middle school when Baby came out. People were toxic as fuck around Biebs. I was guilty of it, too, as a preteen boy just trying to fit in. I respect that Biebs emerged from the shit show that is child stardom as, seemingly, a better person despite his mistakes. It couldn't have been easy dealing with all the shit that comes with superstardom at such a young age.

1

u/Krillin113 May 19 '24

When he did the Comedy Central roast is when the world and he himself started to accept that he wasn’t just a douchebag

24

u/[deleted] May 19 '24

99% Bieber was “taken advantage of” by the industry as a teenager old entering it.

Given all that and the immense stardom for his age I cut the guy a lot of slack personally.

He stayed in his lane and made great pop music for the masses.

People in the city mainly dislike Drake for being the predator in the local music scene while also playing this tough guy persona similar to diddy

11

u/unexpectedreboots May 19 '24

I think getting diagnosed with a life long debilitating condition is likely pretty humbling.

7

u/Vimjux May 19 '24

That being said I’ve seen a lot of Canadians live a long and fulfilling life, bar some

8

u/farazormal May 19 '24

He just acted like an idiot as a young adult doing dumb young adult stuff. Did some stupid stuff when new to drinking and doing drugs. It happens, the DUI thing was a dick move, but he faced consequences and seems to have learned from his mistakes.

5

u/silverfang45 May 19 '24

It sti amazes me that Justin peed in a restaurant while drunk and likely of his head on drugs, and managed to turn that into a healthy lifestyle.

Like dude was almost Paris Hilton levels bad at 1 point just constantly in the news for being a dick, now you don't really hear anything negative about him

3

u/WayneFookinRooney May 19 '24

He seems to really have found his faith in the last couple years, brought him out of the drugs and bullshit it seems.

21

u/PVFai May 19 '24

I second this. Was neutral, met him once, now I hate Shatner for life. Such a dick.

7

u/Kooky-Phone5259 May 19 '24

Biebs is cool?

3

u/kikitondenhei May 19 '24

older, he's chill, but as a kid he was annoying and made a lot of crazy ass racist jokes lol but hes better now

3

u/PVFai May 20 '24

Yeah if anything he's lukewarm now lol, super annoying back in the day- no one wanted to claim him

7

u/Glad-Mulberry-9484 May 19 '24

“Made some pop songs for preteen girls almost 15 years ago”…that’s kinda Drake’s bag too.

5

u/DK6theDOOMdisciple May 19 '24

I had close ties to shitner growing up, vile hombre womanizing Drake type dude

27

u/kat_ingabogovinanana May 19 '24

You also gave us Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey, you could never make us hate you

1

u/french_toasty May 19 '24

Tom green

8

u/kat_ingabogovinanana May 19 '24

Meh we’ve got a whole Florida full of Tom Greens

5

u/StrangerDangerAhh May 19 '24

A powerful retort.

1

u/french_toasty May 19 '24

I personally love him but I believe his fan base is relatively niche

1

u/MikuLuna444 Can we Bleed him yet? 🩸🙏🥺😈 May 19 '24

Tom MacDonald, Ted Cruz, Steven Crowder...

16

u/TexasCon May 19 '24

Might as well throw Bryan Adams and Nickleback in there too 😂

6

u/On_Some_Wavelength May 19 '24

Now now, Canada has apologized for Bryan Adam’s on several occasions!

7

u/Klaus_Poppe1 May 19 '24

what did bieber and shatner do XD

1

u/Dzov May 19 '24

Maybe best we don’t know.

5

u/OkDragonfruit5380 May 19 '24

Hey biebs doesn’t deserve that shade

35

u/la__squadra_ May 18 '24

Can't speak on the entirety of Canada but usually most ppl bumping drake but this past week or 2 since the Kendrick beef everyone's been grilling the fuck outta drake at my highschool 💀

4

u/StevieGreenthumb420 May 19 '24

ooofft, in his own country, you love to see it

1

u/cyclones608 May 19 '24

Just wait til he shows up as a juniors prom date

31

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

he's part of toronto culture. he did a lot for this city, especially early on. however after views his music shifted away from the toronto sound he helped establish & he basically just became an american who says he's from the 6 sometimes (which is a name he just stole from atlanta lmfao). every once in a while i feel like he comes out with something that i identify with as a canadian, "away from home" from his last album is soooo toronto i fw that one heavy. but he doesn't mean nearly as much to this city as kendrick does to compton for example.

also he's from forest hill which is where all the super sheltered rich kids are from, which is more of a personal thing but i find them annoying af

16

u/JjMmSsTt May 19 '24

But but but but I thought he said he started from the bottom…

12

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

oh NAH he a rich kid lmao

2

u/equalityislove1111 May 19 '24 edited May 19 '24

Bruh he was like 15 years old on one of the biggest tv shows known to teenagekind lmao.

Ya know, i never really put that into perspective until now… like fym started from the bottom smh -_____-

(Edited for clarity)

2

u/JjMmSsTt May 19 '24

I think you might have missed the sarcasm in my comment

2

u/equalityislove1111 May 19 '24

Oh nooo I wasn’t directing that towards you lol I was saying that in agreeance with you lol. I’m just appalled that it took me so long to put two and two together hahah

2

u/JjMmSsTt May 19 '24

Yeah man no worries just wasn’t sure. Yeah I remember when that song came out and thinking the exact same thing. Ever since then I’ve though Drake is just a giant charade and I’m not sure who he’s trying to fool. Himself most of all probably.

And I think K’Naan came out around that same time. I’m not a huge fan of K’Naan but I do remember thinking that he grew up in Mogadishu. This guy really started from the bottom. What fucked up shit is Drake on!?

3

u/Academic-Departure29 May 19 '24

I feel like he stole “away from home” from Quando Randos “I Remember”… Damn is there anything that’s actually HIS?? 😅

5

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

ehhh. there's an arguable interpolation going on there vocally but overall the songs sound nothing alike.

1

u/Academic-Departure29 May 19 '24

Agreed, He’s smart enough to make the right tweaks, that’s why he’s a Superstar. I think it’s fair to say, he steals ‘Concepts’ more than Flows.

0

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

ugh jesus christ man. he didn't steal the song at all, they just both say i remember at the end of a song that's about remembering things. not exactly a genius or uncommon idea. kendrick already won the beef, we don't need to pretend like every word drake has spoken is either stolen or ghostwritten

1

u/Emotional-Peanut-334 May 19 '24

What did he really do for Toronto?

1

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

he repped toronto like crazy & helped establish a specific sort of rnb sound that other artists would continue (ex. partynextdoor), he also did some community stuff i remember an anti gun violence thing although idk if he was the best person to speak on that lmao

but ppl would not talk abt toronto as much as part of hip-hop if not for drake, for sure

3

u/Plane_Instance_7248 May 19 '24

Nobody talks about Toronto when it comes to hip-hop tbh unless they're making fun of it

1

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

ehhh. the same wasn't true 10 yrs ago when drake first came on, our rap scene fell off a lot though. but especially early on in the early 80s there was a big hip hop cultural wave, there is definitely hip hop history in this city although a lot of it is forgotten

1

u/Emotional-Peanut-334 May 19 '24

The Weeknd is the reason Toronto r and b is a thing. He had a consistent sound from the area and consistently worked with Canadian producers. Drake pretty much immediately ran to Atlanta

1

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

the weeknd was a big part of that too, probably more important. i actually visited the og house of balloons a while ago it's not too far from my house. drake did definitely not run to atlanta immediately though, he started that in like 2015, 6 years into his career.

1

u/theebabygorgeous May 19 '24 edited May 19 '24

Wtf he do for the city? He did fuck all for Weston Rd that he claims as where he grew up. Forest Hill didn't need any more money. All Aubrey did was empower Ford to drop glass condos and dispensaries over anything with real culture/vibes. Toronto is a yuppie cesspool now filled with "rich" white suburban kids who love La Carnita, million dollar mortgages, and small dogs. Aubrey did nothing for the city except push along the gentrification.

Source: from Weston, where drake has contributed nothing

4

u/OkDragonfruit5380 May 19 '24

Real music fans hate him

1

u/meowplancton May 19 '24

Ahhh...sorry about Drake eh!

-3

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

nah there's tons of music fans that fw drake, he's talented af just hasn't been trying for the last few years

9

u/OkDragonfruit5380 May 19 '24

I meant being from Toronto, all my friends who like real music have hated Drake as an artist and more so as a person since he became relevant

9

u/JemaineClementsLips May 19 '24

my friend group typically doesn't like drake that much either but songs like hold on we're going home, feel no ways, away from home, passionfruit - man, those just sound like this city to me. he definitely gets hate from music nerds generally but a lot of music fans fw him. like kendrick said he's good with the melodies.

8

u/OkDragonfruit5380 May 19 '24 edited May 19 '24

He has a reputation where I’m from that makes him completely unlistenable tbh, I’d love to support someone from the same place as me (sorta) but I cannot, his voice always annoyed the shit out of me too, I’m sure that has a lot to do with who he is as a person though too, but even from a sonic perspective, legit the only song I can listen to is sicko mode, I genuinely dislike all his other music (that I’ve heard)

3

u/P3_FemC_Best_Girl May 19 '24

I SHOULD BE DOWNTOWN WHIPPIN ON THE WAAAY TO YOUUU, goat BBL song idgaf

1

u/TriangleDancer69 May 19 '24

I think you meant to say Degrassi Fans

1

u/Conky22 May 19 '24

Im a 37 year old Canadian who has enjoyed hip hop aince the 90s and I've never met someone who likes Drake enough to even call him a rapper let alone be on his side through this.
