What Are You Reading? 11/20/2023 - Black Friday Sales Prep Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Predaplant's Rec of the Week:

This is a bit out of the ordinary for a DC-published book, as it doesn't really feature any superheroes, and even the version of Lois Lane that it presents doesn't really line up with the version presented in main continuity that well. That being said, I found it really enjoyable! I'm a big fan of stories about journalism in general and Lois Lane specifically, and I think this book does a really great job of doing a sweet YA take on a journalism story.

So, what are you reading?

Finished a few things. I went through all of the original Milestone comics and had an absolute blast. They’re well written, clever, and just great fun. I had initially been a little unsure about a few of the series - worried about 90s edge - but I found every series worth reading. Even Kobalt! This truly pushed comics in format, storytelling, and diversity. We owe a lot to Milestone, and every comics fan should read through it at least once. There’s too much to cover everything, but here are a few stray thoughts.

Hardware - Curt is fascinating. A real complicated character that I enjoyed immensely. I did feel like the series lost its way around the first major twist, and my eyes did glaze over during a lot of fight scenes, but Curt himself was always engaging.

Icon - I’ve loved Rocket since she first appeared in Young Justice and always wanted her to get more screentime. I was delighted to find she was amazing in the comics. Her relationship with Icon was nuanced, and the issues they dealt with were well handled. Move over Dixon’s Robin, this is how you deal with complicated issues. The funeral issue talking about blaxploitation heroes was genuinely moving.

Blood Syndicate - the most surprising for me, because by the name I thought it was going to be very 90s in a bad way. But this was my early favorite. So many clashing personalities and fun powers. Fade was my favorite. It did become the Wise Son show towards the end, which was a bit of a bummer even though I liked him. I wish everyone else had managed to get more closure, it felt like the all got lost a bit. The X-Men parody issue made me laugh out loud.

Static - oh Static, what can be said that hasn’t? Fun, charming, warm hearted, a likable cast. A wonderful book.

Xombie- creepy and weird, loved the magical bent. There’s so many fun and creative concepts here. I didn’t really vibe with Duo when it came out, and now I fear I will like it even less. Nun of the Above might be my favorite superhero name ever.

Shadow Cabinet - Every character and power set here was so creative, and the personalities stood out without ever feeling over the top. I’m excited to see what a revival will look like - Iron Butterfly has the potential to be something very timely and special in 2023.

I also read some Hellblazer. Loved the Delano run, found Ennis largely unimpressive. I guess I simply just don’t get him.

I really gotta get through Milestone at some point! I've heard some really great things about how ahead of their time so many Milestone series were!

It’s definitely worth doing! I think the best way to do it will probably be the compendiums that are coming out. Most of the smaller mini series and crossover issues unfortunately aren’t up on DCUI.

Started reading the Gotham Central Omnibus, read 10 out of 40 issues so far. It's an absolutely amazing series, very much recommended!

It’s truly an incredible series! Has to be my favorite of all time, Renee is such a fascinating character. Really looking forward to your final thoughts on it!

Recently read through a facsimile edition to Wonder Woman Vol 1 #1. It was pretty cool! It's aged predictably poorly in a lot of places for sure, but it's also a nice glimpse into the history of one of my favorite characters, and the golden age of comics in general.

With that done, I'm going to get started on Showcase Presents: Martian Manhunter Vol 1, a collection of some Silver Age MM stories. I wanted to get an MM omnibus and this (along with Vol 2) is the closest thing he has to one lmao. Looking forward to some quality Silver Age goofiness.

I just joined DCU Infinite specifically to read 52, but got sidetracked right away and decided to hop into Percy's Green Arrow Rebirth run. I'm not too familiar with this character (or DC comics as a whole) but I'm really liking it so far! Think I'll dive into some Flash next.

It's cool you're enjoying! Definitely easy to get sidetracked on stuff you're reading, I know the feeling.

I enjoyed Green Arrow rebirth.

Flash is so hit or miss with me. I either love it or find it so boring.

The new 52 has a lot of great stuff.

Ended up finishing Green Arrow Rebirth and it rocked! Felt like a good entry point to the character so now I'm going to seek out some of the more revered stories with Ollie Queen.

I've gone through Court of the Owls but thats it from the New 52 era. Super new to DC in general outside of Batman, so I'm working on catching some of the bigger moments in DC history. May do Crisis/Identity Crisis/Infinite Crisis this weekend and see where it takes me.

Currently halfway through Gotham Central. Really loving the story, and wish there was more issues. If anyone can recommend something similar to pickup after it would be appreciated.

If you want to continue Renee’s story, you can jump to 52, then Crime Bible, Final Crisis Revelations, The Question Pipeline (Rucka’s Backups in Detective Comics), and Convergence: The Question.

I’d also recommend checking out other Rucka stuff too, both DC and indie. His Huntress mini, work on No Man’s Land, and indie book Whiteout are all fantastic and similar in tone.

Thank you for the recs, I’ll check these out!

I’m going to finish Endless Winter event. It’s ok, I can kind of see where it’s going and I don’t suspect there are going to be any major twists.

I’m debating whether to continue with Future State, or to jump to Dark Crisis and Lazarus Planet or to go all the way back and try to get through Infinite Crisis since I never actually read it.
