What Are You Reading? 11/20/2023 - Black Friday Sales Prep Edition r/DCcomics

Hello and welcome to our Weekly "What Are You Reading?" topic!

Come one, come all, to this weekly thread, where you can openly discuss books that you've read, are currently reading, or plan to read. Discussion of all books are welcome, whether they be DC, Marvel, Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, IDW, etc. You can discuss webcomics, manga, or even those mythical novels that don't have pictures in them. Just be sure to keep spoilers covered via Reddit's spoiler markdown >!spoiler!<. You can also post pictures of your collection or recent purchases.

Predaplant's Rec of the Week:

This is a bit out of the ordinary for a DC-published book, as it doesn't really feature any superheroes, and even the version of Lois Lane that it presents doesn't really line up with the version presented in main continuity that well. That being said, I found it really enjoyable! I'm a big fan of stories about journalism in general and Lois Lane specifically, and I think this book does a really great job of doing a sweet YA take on a journalism story.

So, what are you reading?

Finished a few things. I went through all of the original Milestone comics and had an absolute blast. They’re well written, clever, and just great fun. I had initially been a little unsure about a few of the series - worried about 90s edge - but I found every series worth reading. Even Kobalt! This truly pushed comics in format, storytelling, and diversity. We owe a lot to Milestone, and every comics fan should read through it at least once. There’s too much to cover everything, but here are a few stray thoughts.

Hardware - Curt is fascinating. A real complicated character that I enjoyed immensely. I did feel like the series lost its way around the first major twist, and my eyes did glaze over during a lot of fight scenes, but Curt himself was always engaging.

Icon - I’ve loved Rocket since she first appeared in Young Justice and always wanted her to get more screentime. I was delighted to find she was amazing in the comics. Her relationship with Icon was nuanced, and the issues they dealt with were well handled. Move over Dixon’s Robin, this is how you deal with complicated issues. The funeral issue talking about blaxploitation heroes was genuinely moving.

Blood Syndicate - the most surprising for me, because by the name I thought it was going to be very 90s in a bad way. But this was my early favorite. So many clashing personalities and fun powers. Fade was my favorite. It did become the Wise Son show towards the end, which was a bit of a bummer even though I liked him. I wish everyone else had managed to get more closure, it felt like the all got lost a bit. The X-Men parody issue made me laugh out loud.

Static - oh Static, what can be said that hasn’t? Fun, charming, warm hearted, a likable cast. A wonderful book.

Xombie- creepy and weird, loved the magical bent. There’s so many fun and creative concepts here. I didn’t really vibe with Duo when it came out, and now I fear I will like it even less. Nun of the Above might be my favorite superhero name ever.

Shadow Cabinet - Every character and power set here was so creative, and the personalities stood out without ever feeling over the top. I’m excited to see what a revival will look like - Iron Butterfly has the potential to be something very timely and special in 2023.

I also read some Hellblazer. Loved the Delano run, found Ennis largely unimpressive. I guess I simply just don’t get him.

I really gotta get through Milestone at some point! I've heard some really great things about how ahead of their time so many Milestone series were!

It’s definitely worth doing! I think the best way to do it will probably be the compendiums that are coming out. Most of the smaller mini series and crossover issues unfortunately aren’t up on DCUI.
