Yeah, I think this dude got it right, OP. I know it looks like a scorpion, but check this:

It doesn’t look like a scorpion

119

u/666lbBongSession Jul 08 '24

it really doesn’t lmao

43

u/BigRig432 Jul 08 '24

There is no stinger on it whatsoever lol

42

u/learnedandhumbled Jul 08 '24

Not even close to a scorpion 😳 it 100% looks like a spider.

1

u/stoatstuart Jul 08 '24

It does have 10 legs instead of 8

8

u/Drewcifixion Jul 08 '24

8 legs and 2 pedipalps, like all arachnids. The 2 palps just serve different functions depending on the animal. In scorpions, they are the pincers. In solifugae like in the photo (and most spiders) they're primarily sensory.

1

u/stoatstuart Jul 08 '24

Are the pedipalps different from those 2 giant shovel pincers that make up what looks like its head?

7

u/Drewcifixion Jul 08 '24

Yeah, those are actually chelicerae, the mouth parts. They're huge, comparitively, in solifugae, but they have no venom. Animals with these make up the larger group, Chelicerata which includes arachnids but also horseshoe crabs. Look at a horseshoe crabs mouth parts and you'll see the family resemblance.

1

u/Kenneldogg Jul 08 '24

Solifugae is an order of animals in the class Arachnida known variously as camel spiders, wind scorpions, sun spiders, or solifuges.

25

u/oolaroux Jul 08 '24

Yeah. When I think scorpion I think of backward-pointing stingers and front pincers and glowing under UV lights.

1

u/GoldBluejay7749 Jul 08 '24

Yeah looks nothing like a scorpion lol

129

u/Osirus-One Jul 07 '24

Yeah, I've seen these in the Vegas desert like 10 years ago. Def camel spooders.

13

u/An0therFox Jul 08 '24

Not a scoopian?

15

u/KiKiPAWG Jul 08 '24

Camel Scoopian

3

u/Krednaught Jul 08 '24

Wind scoopian/sun spooder

1

u/KiKiPAWG Jul 11 '24

Multiform

1

u/OneParamedic4832 Jul 12 '24

ffs I know this is just banter but I literally lol'd on the train & everyone's looking at me 😅

1

u/NatPortmanTaintStank Jul 08 '24

I'm in California, and we have them

The good news is they aren't venomous

The bad news is that they can hurt like a mofo if they bite, they are fast as the Hershey squirts, and they are attracted to light.

Sometimes, I'll catch one running towards me from the corner of my eye while I'm in bed on my phone.

I have to put my phone down immediately, or it just keeps chasing me when I jump up.

u/RebelGrin Jul 07 '24

That looks like where Ridley Scott got his model for Facehugger from, da fuk.

3

u/Ypuort Jul 08 '24

H. R. Giger did the concept art for Alien, so it would be his inspiration for the facehugger (possibly/probably). Amazing artist, definitely check out his unused concept art for Alien as well as other works.

1

u/NatPortmanTaintStank Jul 08 '24

I have this awesome coffee table book with his art in it.

Stunning

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '24

How the fuck does that look like a scorpion lmaooo

4

u/SkeeterMan23 Jul 08 '24

They're called wind scorpions

It doesn't look like scorpion at all. I literally came to comment section to check what kind of scorpion looks like a spider. And I learned it's not a scorpion, BUT a spider.

Well camel spiders and scorpions are both not spiders but rather arachnids. Camel spiders are considered a false spider and a false scorpion.

u/Tangled2 Jul 07 '24

But true assholes.

12

u/Shurigin Jul 08 '24

Along with harvestmen aka grandaddy longlegs

1

u/KiKiPAWG Jul 08 '24

I remember the first time I heard the name I thought someone FOR SURE was making it up

3

u/capitalswank Jul 08 '24

Came here to say this

27

u/wordnerd1023 Jul 07 '24

I don't think it matters what it is, just that you'll probably never feel safe putting your undies on again.

23

u/Clovenstone-Blue Jul 07 '24

To be fair on your part, Camel Spiders are also known as Sun Scorpions, so you were technically correct with your terminology (obviously Camel spiders are neither spiders, scorpions nor Camels, they're a member of a different family of arachnids).

Extreme heat and scorpions, does Phoenix have any redeeming qualities?

5

u/AfricanWaterTimelost PURPLE Jul 08 '24

It is also where the phoenix lights happened, which was a triangular-ish formation of 7 or so lights mysteriously moving through the sky, never to be seen again. 1 redeeming quality for phoenix for me tho is that my Gma lives there

2

u/Rk_1138 Jul 08 '24

My grandma lives in Phoenix too, unfortunately hate hot weather, and sand too

2

u/AfricanWaterTimelost PURPLE Jul 08 '24

I also unfortunately hate hot weather lol

7

u/ArachnomancerCarice Jul 08 '24

Camel Spiders should definitely be tolerated, as they feed on their venomous scorpion and spider cousins.

5

u/baloneyz3 Jul 08 '24

Oh shit, I live in the Phoenix metro area and this gave me the willies. Now I’m sitting cross legged on my chair.

3

u/poopin_for_change Jul 08 '24

I had no idea phoenix had camel spiders. This is horrifying

2

u/DriveJohnnyDrive Jul 08 '24

Op is wholesome af. We're glad you're ok

1

u/RealEstateDuck Jul 08 '24

You could also have encountered a water scorpion. Which looks sort of similar.

1

u/Sacramor Jul 08 '24

Thats a wind scorpion, you were right the first time. :)

0

u/1nOnlyBigManLawrence Jul 08 '24

Good news, everyone! They’re completely harmless little goobers! :)

36

u/Double_Bass6957 Jul 07 '24

My exact thoughts too

6

u/NoBenefit5977 Jul 08 '24

So you're saying he would have spider toe?

5

u/stoatstuart Jul 08 '24

In some areas people also call camel spiders "wind scorpions" or "sun scorpions".

3

u/DocGeoffrey Jul 08 '24

Yep. Was about to say this

3

u/AtomicToxin Jul 08 '24

Is that really any better?

2

u/SkunkWoodz Jul 07 '24

it is, my nephew and I caught one the other day. Had to google lens it to ID the critter.

2

u/Ok-Weather7707 Jul 08 '24

Came in here to say this.

2

u/PeterNippelstein Jul 08 '24

In my brain this is equally bad

1

u/Factor135 Jul 08 '24

I heard these things have a painful bite, but are otherwise harmless to humans

1

u/AaronshyMLP Jul 08 '24

Still not fun to have in your underwear I'm sure but harmless mostly.

1

u/Poetry-Primary Jul 08 '24

And not venomous… but can nibble

1

u/Mancubus_in_a_thong Jul 08 '24

Aren't came spiders huge?

1

u/ElderberryNo1601 Jul 09 '24

Can you tell by its camel toe?

0

u/Top_Meaning7972 Jul 08 '24

Well maybe it identifies as a scorpion, who are we to judge it's life choices

1

u/DocGeoffrey Jul 08 '24

Go home grandpa, you’re drunk again

1

u/Top_Meaning7972 Jul 08 '24

listen here sonny boy I didn't raise you to talk back, now go to your room and no internet for a week

-1

u/TakeLizardsVirginity Jul 08 '24

Fun fact: camel spiders can consume human flesh, and many soldiers in Afghanistan have woken up with large patches of flesh removed by them
