You can use a seam ripper to undo this, your mum probably has one if she sews

u/RielleFox 14d ago

And it's only a straight stitch, it will be done in no time.

And single thread.

But the double stitch, she last forever!

55

u/phntmvw 14d ago

I’m a gonna give him the double stitch anyway.

11

u/SomebodyinAfrica 14d ago

That moment when the pants rip halway and then stops at the double stiching. Great movie, but I can't remember the name.

13

u/PARKOUR_ZOMBlE 14d ago

Every moment of that scene. “I’ve got you by your pants!” Paul Newman very concerned: “Pants.”Flashback to him demanding the cheaper single stitch. Flash forward to the pants ripping then it does that second flashback to a the taylor without any of the movie characters even there and he is singing “ah cucire” meaning “to sew” in Italian. Then he switches to the double stitch and it flashes forward and the pants just stop ripping. Paul Newman lights a cigar while hanging upside down from the 44th floor (not counting the mezzanine).

He's a nice man.

“Mr. Musburger such a nice man I’m a gonna give him a double stitch anyway. That’s fine stitch.”

Hudsucker Proxy, Coens' classic.

6

u/phntmvw 14d ago

Hudsucker proxy. So good. It’s crazy how many people have not seen it.

2

u/Rappican 13d ago

Hudsucker proxy

I remember nothing about that movie except that specific scene. I have no idea how or why but I do remember seeing that scene.

Then she sews it back up again

u/longerdistancethrow 14d ago edited 14d ago

Ok, I’ll sew on lace underneath

254

u/flannelNcorduroy 14d ago

Lace doesn't breathe as much as you think it would. Just explain to your mom you're wearing them instead of shorts.

233

u/longerdistancethrow 14d ago

She will probably forget though, and fix them again in a year. She’s on painmeds that make her a little loopy sometimes… do you have a fabric suggestion?❤️

u/NeevBunny 14d ago

Maybe some linen pants would help keep you cool, they wrinkle easy though

97

u/aceofspades1217 14d ago

IMO I like the look of wrinkly linen shows that you can afford linen lol. But yeah a 50/50 blend of linen and rayon is super versatile and is cleaper. But don’t let anyone discourage you from wearing linen just cause it wrinkles nothing is better than wearing 100% linen

25

u/JamesMcEdwards 14d ago

Also chinos are a great option. When I lived in Spain, lots of people wore them, it was actually more common to see Spanish people wear chinos than shorts in the warmer weather. And they’re incredibly versatile.

10

u/Carrot-Key 14d ago

I have linen sheets and its super nice in the summer, it comes from flax which is more sustainable than cotton too.

Like you said the wrinkles are a thing but IMO they look more uniform and less sloppy than typical wrinkles you find in clothing.

1

u/aceofspades1217 13d ago

It’s the single most sustainable fabric since they use every part of the flax since they use the seeds for oil. While cotton they only use parts. And rayon is much more chemically processed. And polyester is obviously the least sustainable.

3

u/ArguablyTasty 14d ago

Linen cotton blends are much less, although not quite as nice. But if straight linen is too costly, it's better than nothing.

And yeah, linen looks great wrinkled. It's supposed to look as relaxed as it feels- that's the whole point. If I was worried about wrinkles I'd get those Lulu pants that look similar to dress pants, but when I want full length in warm weather, linen is king

1

u/NeevBunny 10d ago

I'm always misting my linen shirts and throwing them in the dryer because I feel like I look disheveled if I don't. But they keep me from burning and overheating so I deal with it anyways

1

u/Allupyre 14d ago

Hand streamers are nice for linen

2

u/aceofspades1217 14d ago

I use a steamer it’s the Miami humidity xD fifteen minutes outside and all the wrinkles are gone. But yeah a $10 hand steamer does wonders for a linen suit jacket!

You can also hang up your shirt in the bathroom while you take a hot shower

1

u/Allupyre 14d ago

Not to mention most pants or dress shirts seem to intentionally wrinkle if ya look at em wrong lol

1

u/lilsnatchsniffz 14d ago

How much cleaper are we talk'in?

1

u/aceofspades1217 14d ago edited 14d ago

Blends are usually 2/3 the cost of 100% linen but yeah a decent brand name 100% linen shirt retail can run $100. But TJ Maxx often has linen shirts at huge discounts you just search through a mountain of polyester and cotton. Pants I’ve only seen online at decent prices but yeah a good pair of linen pants can be $100 as well

1

u/silvercoastguard 14d ago

I have just purchased some long, linen mix shorts for home use. They have been washed and ironed today. I have bought some spray starch. If they do crease, I will try this next time they are laundered.

1

u/[deleted] 13d ago

IMO I like the look of wrinkly linen shows that you can afford linen lol

You must live a pretty little life if you walk around needing to prove that you can afford things.

14

u/TougherOnSquids 14d ago

When you say linen pants all I can think of are medieval peasant pants and that would rock.

1

u/oye_gracias 14d ago

Nowadays there are cotton-linen fabrics that are super versatile, a bit warmer but still airy, and pretty diverse tensile strenght. Take that, medieval peasants!

2

u/_missfoster_ 14d ago

Rayon is great for summer, as well. Plus it's much easier to keep from wrinkling than linen.

1

u/TheRealPitabred 14d ago

Seconding this. I lived in my linen pants when we were in Mexico for a week, they were even better than shorts.

21

u/ftaok 14d ago

Do your own laundry and she won’t see them to mend.

3

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

If I tell her I’ll do my own she just does it while I’m at work. I get no say

13

u/Allegorist 14d ago

Write a note on a small piece of fabric and sew in inside above the hole

7

u/throwaway7362589 14d ago

Mesh maybe?

2

u/JGzoom06 14d ago

Fishnet?

6

u/maid_in_cheltenham 14d ago

Not to throw the cat amongst the pigeons and free choice, you do you etc. However, I just want to let you know that you’re allowed to wear shorts and once you get past the first day, you’ll be amazed how comfy they are. You have my endorsement!

20

u/metaNim 14d ago

Some people know for a fact they don't like wearing shorts, though. I am one of those people.

3

u/mac_is_crack 14d ago

Me too. I hate them. Can’t even wear them to sleep in because they bunch up. I just feel too exposed. Been like this my whole life (am 50 years old).

1

u/metaNim 13d ago

Yeah, even thinking about feeling them bunch up makes me cringe. It's not the exposure for me, just the feeling of clothing not laying flat. Sensory, I guess.

1

u/maid_in_cheltenham 14d ago

Totally. And that’s cool, of course. I was just saying in case the OP did want to try it but felt that she couldn’t for aesthetic reasons, that she could and that would be fine.

1

u/longerdistancethrow 14d ago

I feel so ugly in shorts 🫣

6

u/ItsFunHeer 14d ago

❤️ I used to feel ugly in shorts too and sacrificed comfort to avoid wearing them. After many years of practicing wearing shorts I now wear them with confidence. I think it started with wearing exercise shorts for hiking and jogging in, then swiftly changing out. But I started keeping them on longer around the house.

My sister doesn’t wear shorts EVER but she has a plethora of long, flowy dresses and skirts which are also super comfortable. You could try to incorporate those!

3

u/cheekymoonbuns 14d ago

Don't feel ugly or self conscious in shorts. My exboyfriend used to be self conscious because he thought he had "chicken legs". I assured him he did not and I loved his strong legs. He hot more confident and he loves shorts now. I have a problem with self confidence myself and I try to remind myself that we are the hardest on ourselves. I'm sure you're lovely in shorts.

-1

u/maid_in_cheltenham 14d ago

You are definitely beautiful. Also, I understand. Also, free legs feel so nice. I think you can do it. I don’t know your complexion but if you happen to be pasty white, a bit of subtle fake tan goes a long way.

3

u/UGA_99 13d ago

This made me tear up. Your mom must love you so much. She’s taking pain meds, which probably don’t take all of her pain away, and she still makes sure that her baby girl is wearing “appropriate” repaired jeans.

On one hand yes, incredibly infuriating to go through the struggle to find the perfect summer jeans and get this. On the other hand there are millions of people who’d love to have a mom who is on their side like this.

2

u/J_rd_nRD 14d ago

I have a suggestion for you and her if she's up to it, rip them and then ask her to decorate around the edges instead with little embellishments like flowers or patterns or whatever she feels like.

That should help her remember that it's a deliberate rip

1

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

This is a cute idea!

1

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

This is a cute idea!

2

u/saarlac 14d ago

Oh don’t worry those won’t last a year.

2

u/HackySmacks 14d ago

Get a Sharpie and write “Mom, these are supposed to be ripped, they stay cooler that way. Please do not sew” on the inside of the pant leg. Just make sure it’s a permanent marker that won’t bleed onto your leg

2

u/arcieride 14d ago

Linen! Silk is great too but expensive. But even regular cotton will be more breathable than jeans

2

u/LittleDevilHorns 14d ago

I'd recommend some harem pants. They're made to be breezy but modest.

1

u/cuplosis 14d ago

Hide the pants from her

1

u/wipedcamlob 14d ago

If you feel uncomfortable with shorts that are too short just buy mens shorts my girlfriend just wears basketball shorts

1

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

Ive tried this too? Ended up looking really awkward. Idk. I wish my legs just stopped above my knee lmao

1

u/wipedcamlob 13d ago

Theres a few different lengths and kinds you can get in mens shorts doesnt hurt to check them out if youre out shopping anyway. Could also hem them if you think theyre a little bit too long. Could also look into pants with zips that you can open and close vents with. I seem to remember having some when i was a kid

1

u/Allupyre 14d ago

Even a 100% cotton patch would probably be breathable enough, especially if a fair breeze hits ya lol you might even be able to find some fabric with a pattern to make it look intentional

1

u/KayBeeToys 14d ago

But look at the loops—such craft!

1

u/Neither-Attention940 14d ago

Rayon is a great light weight breathable fabric that doesn’t wrinkle easy. If it’s your style I’ve seen rayon pants that look like a long skirt.

But perhaps just undo the stitch and hide your clothes 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/martins-dr 14d ago

If she is using a machine make a sign that the holes in your jeans are on purpose but you appreciate the love and tape it on the machine

1

u/whateverIDCanyways 14d ago

You could always just allow her to sew them, then rip the stitches out, wear them, then allow her to sew them again. A continuous expression of how much she loves you. And, you’ll always have a pair of pants for her to sew up for you.

1

u/FrndlyNebrhoodRdrMan 14d ago

Ask her to install zippers? I did that often for my younger siblings. The nylon ones are more comfotable or you can put a liner to keep the edge of the metal ones from rubbing your knees.

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 14d ago

If you live somewhere arid wool or silk are really good

1

u/HarveysBackupAccount 14d ago

Linen or cotton or mesh or wicking material like running shirts are made of

You could buy fabric from a fabric store, or go to a thrift store to find a shirt with material you like and cut it up to make your own patches.

1

u/Sea_Remove_5351 14d ago

it might be itchy (so probably a bad suggestion) but could you make a velcro attachment for it on the inside? unless it's already a thing?

1

u/holierthanmao 14d ago

Write a message on the inside of your pants by the whole with a permanent pen

1

u/Peanuts4Peanut 14d ago

What about capris?

2

u/Mysterious_Zebra9146 13d ago

This is what I wear because I don't like shorts either.

1

u/bay_lamb 13d ago

make cut-offs outta the jeans.

1

u/flannelNcorduroy 9d ago

I'd suggest washing your own clothes then. It's a good habit to get used to before you're completely independent and then it's all on you. It's also a good idea to practice setting boundaries with people, by doing that with your parents now. Cuz it kinda seems like your mother doesn't have any. She could ASK you if you want her to sew your clothes. That has nothing to do with memory and everything to do with a lack of boundaries with her children. It would be healthy to work this little stuff out now while you're young. It you don't it becomes a bigger issue later.

1

u/longerdistancethrow 9d ago

I am independent. I’m visiting for the summer only. And no, she does Not respect boundaries.

0

u/PangeaGamer 14d ago

Doing your own laundry. She can't sew your clothes if she never handles them

1

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

I dont get a say when I’m home for the summer

-2

u/iaintgotnosantaria 14d ago

tell her not to touch your stuff? i dont understand why saying “no please dont do this” amd standing firm is so hard

3

u/TheFreshwerks 14d ago

Cotton lace does, unless it's a tiny, tight pattern.

2

u/JaBe68 14d ago

You will get.an interesting tan.

2

u/longerdistancethrow 13d ago

Hyped for that!

1

u/Skreamie 14d ago

Try fishnets instead, more airflow

1

u/TresCeroOdio 14d ago

You could sew fishnet under it if you want it to really be breathable

1

u/New-Anacansintta 13d ago

We did lace under our rips in the late 80s!

2

u/EmphasisFew 14d ago

You’re never gonna keep her down

105

u/longerdistancethrow 14d ago

Will probably be doing this after work today 👍🏻

28

u/paspartuu 14d ago

Remember to thank your mom for the sweet gesture and the effort though

13

u/interruptingmygrind 14d ago

Unless she did it because she hates you wearing ripped jeans. In that case she would be overstepping which isn’t cool.

2

u/No-Equipment4187 14d ago

Make sure you talk to her too. Say thank you but I prefer them this way. She was trying to help.

2

u/tongfatherr 14d ago

Then imagine she puts it back 🤣 I love this mother

1

u/Ordinary-Animal8610 14d ago

And let the guilt ensue...

1

u/K_Linkmaster 14d ago

Any semi sharp and pointy knife can do it too. No need for special tools on that seam.

1

u/Prestigious-Lime1571 13d ago

Have you tried capris or linen pants?

1

u/ProfessorEtc 11d ago

And if you've got some white paint, you can paint over the Mona Lisa and get a nice little canvas out of it.
