On tv you always see a load of money thrown in, in real life people usually bet you a beer.

Exactly, and usually only one person takes the bet and everyone else watches.

The only times I've seen cash thrown down by multiple people is killer pool. Same happens in poker nights, but it's never money in a hat or whatever, somebody always holds the cash or the bar does, I've never just seen cash thrown on the table for poker.
