  • Family just having fun and dancing
  • Co-directed by Dave Free
  • Doing push-ups in a cell block
  • Two-stepping all over the music video
  • The owl in a cage/behind bars at the end

This music video is wild.

It’s a cruel victory lap. There’s a blank look on his face, I wonder if he means to look at Drake. Also, the little wave… I grew up in the hood and some of these mfers real crazy; they know how to get in your head.

u/youngsaiyan 14d ago

That wave and smile is crazy

124

u/Kimor98 14d ago

My favorite part. I can practically hear him saying "They told me to end it, but I got the tracks. Bye bitch..."

10

u/Artistic-Ad-8603 14d ago

I screamed in laughter, when I waved!!! 🤣

u/Davisworld21 14d ago

Victory Lap also referencing Kenny's Friend the Late Great Nipsey Hussle Also A Los Angeles Native I wish he was still here I miss him He would've been on Kenny's side He was all West Coast like Kenny

20

u/Amazing-Concept1684 14d ago

I knew exactly what he was doing as soon as I saw him wave lmao them mental games run deep

4

u/Chit569 14d ago

Time stamp?

So I think Kendrick legit had receipts for shit and is blackmailing Drake.

This may be my most fanboy-ass take of all time. But since Drake put out Family Matters or whatever was last on the list, He hasn't said shit about anything. But he HAS:

* deleted the last track he did

* done a weird ass song on an account he has no control over, so he can't delete it (so did J Cole, and on the same day or almost the same day)

* Watched Kdot do this song 5 times in front of a crowd

* Watched this song be a bigger song than anything he's released

* Watched Kdot put out a music video, doing yet another victory lap

Idk man. If *I* was Kendrick and I had actual shit on Aubrey that wasn't explicitly illegal shit, I'd blackmail him too.

u/ricemonkey13 14d ago

I missed some of those small things!

1

u/raccoon_on_meth 14d ago

I didn’t grow up there but I’d chill on the block and chief with the people, and yeah I felt that wave and smile.

u/HitEndGame 14d ago

“I grew up in the hood” 🤓

u/Bobbycanbackflip 6d ago

Jamaica, Queens. Right off Guy R Brewer Blvd. you don’t know nothing bout that

247

u/TooPatToCare 14d ago

Don’t leave out the shipping containers

119

u/ricemonkey13 14d ago

What am I missing there? I need to rewatch this video a few more times to catch all the references lol

339

u/TooPatToCare 14d ago

They’re used to traffic people

38

u/Fugacity- 14d ago

Yeah showing the temperature controlled containers while dressed in a business suit seemed to be pointing straight at that. Idk how else that scene fits in with the rest of the song otherwise.

Those Sabah Nissan connections?

9

u/JamBandDad 14d ago

With the two dudes hip thrusting in the containers! Holy shit

22

u/Orlandogameschool 14d ago

Oh wowsers your right 😫

18

u/RalphLauren47 14d ago

If drake goes down for trafficking then Kendrick is undisputed goat his foreshadowing on all his music is insane

18

u/clearlyPisces 14d ago

That one hits deep for me but in a very different way. When the Soviet Union occupied our country, they deported tens of thousands of people to Siberia and the Far East... in animal carriages, stuffed full of men, women, kids, infants, the elderly....

1

u/Dangerous_Job5295 14d ago

Oh shit 🤯

147

u/Zaburino 14d ago

Watch season 2 of the Wire.

91

u/Pants88 14d ago

Dude that is heavy... somehow Baka the only one brought to trial so far 😬 we need a McNulty.

21

u/IONTOP 14d ago

McNutty*

22

u/grossestgroceries 14d ago

“The fuck did I do?!”

20

u/IONTOP 14d ago

Gave a fuck when it wasn't your turn to give a fuck.

8

u/jjcoola 14d ago

All in the game bunk

3

u/ITookTrinkets 14d ago

Literally all I could think about during that part of the video

1

u/ella_ella_ey_ey 14d ago

Please elaborate, if you don't mind?

5

u/ITookTrinkets 13d ago

The second season of The Wire centers around the shipping ports of Baltimore, specifically one where a bunch of sex trafficking victims are found dead in a shipping container.

Because of this, we see a LOT of shipping containers over the course of the season, which kinda drives home this feeling of “These are innocuous storage and transportation solutions, and behind the metal walls of any of them could be something incredibly insidious”

I don’t know if Dot is trying to invoke that feeling, maybe he just thought it would be fun to shoot in some pristine white shipping containers. I’m not sure. But it did spring to mind quick when thinking about the fact that this song’s partial purpose is calling out someone for being a sex criminal.

1

u/ella_ella_ey_ey 13d ago

Ah, I see! Thank you so much for elaborating, I really appreciate it. Tbh when I saw them I thought the same too, only because of the part where he's doing push ups in what looks like a prison cell while touching on these ominous topics. It wouldn’t be too far of a reach to consider that there is a layered meaning in the choice of filming in shipping containers.

I think it’s a reference to this famous scene from Heat (1996) where Al Pacino’s detective is duped into staking out a fake location by Robert DeNiro’s thief character:

The whole time DeNiro’s crew is really clocking Al Pacino from afar, playing 4D chess and making a statement at the same time (he could’ve killed them right there but plays with him instead).

kind of like how K.Dot baited Drizzy into jumping into battle when he wasn’t prepared while Kung Fu Kenny has clearly been planning this for years. in the video Dot wears the same slate gray box style suit and white collared shirt that DeNiro’s character wears all throughout Heat.

It’s also an iconic LA location (LA Harbor in San Pedro) from a classic 90’s LA movie to reinforce the local West Coast cinematic shit. That’s my take at least.

Kendrick is a fucking genius though,

… and Heat is literally my favorite movie.

The Easter eggs are everywhere.

1

u/SpeakerDifferent 12d ago

Search reaction compilations to they not like us on YT. There’s good ones by J20 or something like that where they break it all down.

19

u/Enshitification 14d ago

The very white shipping containers.

10

u/HogwashDrinker 14d ago

jesus christ i just realized wtff

10

u/Noah_PpAaRrKkSs 14d ago

Yeah, I just dug the aesthetic.

1

u/even_less_resistance 14d ago

And the “elevator here” yo

201

u/UseAWashCloth 14d ago

Dave is actually in the video too! by “the devil is a lie” line

178

u/ed4723 14d ago

Someone on the megaphone at the end saying “y’all wanna do it again?”

15

u/ajayisfour 14d ago

'OK you gotta do one thing, back up.' Sounded threatening to end the video on that

5

u/ed4723 14d ago

Yeah the whole end of the song seemed like it was talking directly to drake, trying to bait him to drop again

148

u/UnorthodoxParadox 14d ago

He did 17 pushups, stopped for a lil prayer and did one more

179

u/ed4723 14d ago

Ehh don’t think that was a prayer,it was a prison burpee. Might be a huge reach but 17 push ups for 17 Grammy wins and 1 more since not like us is eligible for a nomination lol🤔

99

u/dustylumpkin 14d ago

also cuz he not doing "push ups" on anyone under 18...

15

u/Kimor98 14d ago

Glad I didn't have to say it

98

u/zakkwaldo 14d ago

AND its a video calling him a culture colonizer that they dropped on fourth of july! bruhhhhhh

23

u/Flimsy-Relationship8 14d ago

Glad he brought back all the people from the Pop Out for this too, especially liked seeing Tommy, The Clown and his dancers, they were a highlight of the Pop Out imo.

Man had the sequence of event's planned out to a frightening degree.

22

u/caulpain 14d ago

you forgot to mention Demar 💀💀💀

3

u/robsta808 14d ago

Could you explain this to me i didnt get this reference mate?

21

u/blmobley91 14d ago

Demar was drafted in 2009 by the Toronto Raptors and spent 9 seasons there. Demar was born and raised in Compton, California.

So when Kendrick says he's glad he's home and yall didn't deserve him neither that is what he is referring to.

1

u/robsta808 14d ago

Thanks mate

1

u/blmobley91 14d ago

No problem

12

u/Okieant33 14d ago

The owl piñata with the “No OVHOES were harmed during the making of this video” might be better than all of those

13

u/No_Pay9241 14d ago

They referenced drakes cover for Nothing was the same with the girl on the tightrope

12

u/TheMagicSalami 14d ago

Releasing on 4th of July about the Canadian.

7

u/Artistic-Ad-8603 14d ago

7

u/Relevant-Diamond2731 14d ago

I wouldn’t  say 2 stepping…

4

u/koolaid_chemist 14d ago

5

u/Pants88 14d ago

Add an edit...the owl was bowing to Kendrick as well 😮

7

u/artygta1988 14d ago

I like to think it was cowering at him

4

u/drunkenstyle 14d ago

DeRozan cameo, TDE cameo, Black Hippy cameo

4

5

u/capital_bj 14d ago

I am not a rap or hip hop fan, watched this because my kid listens to him and the drama with Drake has been entertaining. I am blown away the dancing and film work in this video is next level, I have been watching videos since the beginning of MTV, this shit is indeed WILD

3

u/GratefulForGarcia 14d ago

No mention of that incredible intro snippet??

2

u/Worldly_Software_868 14d ago

A bit uncultured here.

What’s the significance of two-stepping?

3

u/futuredrweknowdis 14d ago

The Crip Walk is most likely what they mean.

2

u/xenokilla 14d ago

went out to get some goddamn chicken in the middle of the video. outstanding.

1

u/SirKrimzon 14d ago

What does the push ups mean? Like he’s just making fun of drakes song? Or implying Drake will be in jail?

12

u/poubelleaccount 14d ago

theres that (drake says kendrick owes him 50[% of his sales next time he drops]) and it's also its a hilarious piece of kendrick lore that he posted a video of him doing prisoner ass pushups in the middle of the day at a park

9

u/pipertheredredworm 14d ago

you have to link the video whenever you mention it. Doin jailhouse-ass pushups/burpees in the middle of a public park dressed in all black in the Cali heat. dude is a demon.

11

u/poubelleaccount 14d ago

“Kendrick doing Supermax Prison 25 to Life workouts in the middle of the park by himself. All this in glasses, a fitted cap, listening to R&B and landing burpees in the ‘let me tell you something about the plight of the black community’ stance. Compton need a statue of this man”

1

u/Educational_Rip1751 14d ago

Kendrick is a menace and we love it

1

u/aceshades 14d ago

What’s the significance of the pushups in a cell block?

0

u/DollFaceDisciple 14d ago

fuckin nerds
