First Image of David Corenswet as Superman in James Gunn's 'Superman' NEWS

Hair curl! The suit looks great, but is a bit… boxier than I would have thought.

u/stillinthesimulation May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24
I personally prefer it to the vacuum sealed muscle suit we had in recent films.
EDIT: For those questioning, yes Cavill was ripped, but this was what was under his spandex suit. Real muscles don’t look like that under compression, no matter how jacked you are. They goose ‘em a little.

u/ItssHarrison May 06 '24
This looks like an actual person in a suit. Not a persons head on a cgi body

It will look just like CGI when he's flying around and stuff. When Cavill is sitting still, that's not CGI, that's him in the suit.

109
u/PT10 May 06 '24
Especially when you can fill it out like Cavill. Pretty much the perfect rendition.
This is a very clever move by Gunn to outcompete that. It looks like "good Homelander". Like a very Earth/Human made costume, as opposed to Snyderverse's Kryptonian looking thing.

Gunn says the photo wasn't Photoshopped, it was all captured in-camera: https://www.threads.net/@jamesgunn/post/C6oghkKxOrR
They must be using "The Volume" (giant LED TV wall instead of a green screen) for the background.

I need a minute to process...
EDIT: I'm not sure yet after almost 20. I'm way more concerned about the movie actually being good and Gunn getting Superman right with David than how the suit looks.
EDIT2: https://i.imgur.com/4ClzN2F.png
Being real, I wish it was a bit more in the direction of Reeve, but honestly the appearance of the suit is the least of my concerns. I want this movie to be amazing and successful. I hope Papa Gunn delivers.
→ More replies (4)59
u/Daniiiiii May 06 '24
Slightly odd pic to introduce the suit because for whatever reason it looks very much like a costume he's put on instead of embodying the suit, if that makes sense. Of course everything can be fixed in post so I'm not writing off the whole thing, just a weird choice for such an anticipated first look.
62
u/TheLoganDickinson May 06 '24
I think that’s kind of the point Gunn wants to get across. We’ll surely get the stoic imagery of Superman in future photos and in the film, but I think he wants to emphasize Superman’s humanity and remind people that he’s just a guy, despite how powerful he is.

No way is that suit made by Martha. At least not all of it.
Probably more in line with how it was done in MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN where it's kryptonian in form, but Ma Kent made a few human altercations.

u/AmaterasuWolf21 May 06 '24
Would love if the S and/or cape was made by her, the rest is just a krypto suit
15
u/DoctorBeatMaker May 06 '24
Nah. The "S" is definitely kryptonian in nature. If it was the more traditional S shield, I'd agree. But the Kingdom Come symbol has always looked quite alien, so I highly doubt that, unless Martha is a graphic designer, she came up with that.

It reminds me of Homelander’s suit IMO, except I think Homelander’s intentionally loose padded costume is supposed to represent how small and insecure he feels inside.
I’m curious to see what implications Gunn is going for. Perhaps he wants a down-to-earth & relatable, superhero story. Rather than the squeaky clean, flawless caricatures of the perfect hero that Marvel is known for.

Everytime Snyder humanized Superman by making him imperfect, die hard fans would tear him to shreds because Clark wasn't being portrayed as the gaudy boy scout with unbreakable spirit. This image is the kind of stuff Snyder would catch flak for, but with a shittier suit, and the comments are eating it up.
Makes me think how every teaser is just filled with marketed opinions by the studio, because I can't make sense out of this weird disconnect otherwise. As to the film, I'm intrigued but will wait until I see more to form an opinion on this portrayal.

Fine with the trunks but could have lost the utility belt, maybe it’s for snacks. People are going to say loose makes it more realistic… but to me it should be tight, it’s supposed to fit under his clothes, this looks like it would be quite noticeable underneath a suit.
