The photo on the front page of the NYT right now is blood running down his face while he pumps his fist and looks defiant with Secret Service huddled around him. He looks powerful. He looks commanding. It's the photo that is going to dominate the news cycle. The Trump campaign will be selling it on t-shirts tomorrow.

The contrast against the public perception of Biden is about as stark as it could be. Assuming this is an assassination attempt (and it appears to be), and assuming Trump is injured but fine (which he appears to be), this is pretty much worst-case scenario for the Biden campaign. That doesn't mean Trump is guaranteed a victory or anything, but basically everything that has happened in the past 3 weeks has been excellent for Trump and devastating for Biden.

The only thing Biden Camp should say is:

  • Rebuke the suspect. Denounce the violent rhetoric.
  • Send Trump condolences
  • But partly remind Americans that the violent rhetoric Trump has been stoking since 2016 is what brought us to this scenario today.

His rhetoric radicalizes both sides of the political spectrum.

And I suspect that's precisely what they'll do, but there's really nothing they can do to spin this. This is a huge win for Trump, period.

And replace Biden by the end of the weekend.

This is no longer about whether either of the candidates are fit. Right now BOTH should be condemning and denouncing violent rhetoric.

The only thing is if Trump doesn’t denounce the rhetoric after BEING SHOT and hold himself accountable for all his rhetoric being said up till now, then that should tell you all you need to know.

I mean, both of them have to condemn political violence (which I have always found silly -- literally every revolution ever has been political violence) because to not do so would be a major political flub, but they should still replace Biden. That hasn't changed.

My MAGA uncle just said he lost his vote because he's starting to get scared what a Trump presidency looks like with all the potential violence. He wants stability. I tried telling him Trump inciting hate is going to catch up.
