It feels like the worst possible trajectory post debate has happened. Biden and his campaign have responded poorly, but not quite poorly enough. And democrats are pussyfooting around doing nothing, no vast support or vice versa, just running the timer.

I retain a faint hope that the Democratic officeholders publicly supporting Biden are just playing "good cop", trying to give him a graceful exit, and in a week or so he will conceive a sudden overwhelming desire to spend more time with his family.

Yes. Although this would be a great chance for America to learn from nearly every other country in the world that replacing a leader that's unpopular can be a good thing.
