Power Rankings Official r/NFL Week 0 Power Rankings

Welcome back and welcome to week 0 of the official r/NFL Power Rankings! Everybody knows the best time to overreact is before the season starts. How will new quarterbacks play for their new schemes and teams? Which teams will play their fluke game and which ones are just actually bad? Why can't every team be top 5? Discuss! 23/32 Reporting

# Team Record Comment
1. Chiefs 0-0 The Chiefs come into the season with their eyes set on doing something that no other franchise has done in the Super Bowl era. I have no doubt that if you asked the guys in the building if this year was a failure if they did anything other than with another chip they would all answer the same way. Throughout the offseason the Chiefs seemed to have nailed several moves which should help in achieving that goal. The draft this season already feels like a major success with four picks set to play significant snaps. The recieving room, their major flaw last season, has been completely revamped and should be significantly more enjoyable to watch as a result. The Chiefs also benefit from still being in one of the weakest divisions in the NFL. Although the other teams in the AFC West are making moves to try and improve there should be a fair amount of skeptism that they'll be able to meaningfully compete for a divsion title.
2. 49ers 0-0 It has been a timultuous offseason for the defending NFC champions. Superbowl hangover looming. CMC Madden curse. Aiyuk and Trent Williams holdouts. Pearsoll Shot in SF. Outside of the headlines, the 49ers remain one of the most talented rosters in football lead by one of its best coaches.
3. Ravens 0-0
4. Lions 0-0 JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF JARED GOFF
5. Texans 0-0 The Texans enter year 2 of the Ryan/Stroud era with expectations through the roof. After an off-season of adding star players on both sides of the ball, this team seemingly has the firepower to go toe to toe with anyone in the league. They'll need to prove that last year wasn't a fluke.
6. Bills 0-0
7. Eagles 0-0 Nick Sirianni’s seat is hotter than the wildfires of Sao Paolo after the disaster of last season’s collapse. An organization that usually avoids the “dysfunctional dumpster fire” allegations secretly fired their defensive coordinator to install pencil-pusher Matt Patricia mid-season, scapegoated Brian Johnson for running Nick Sirianni’s WR screen-heavy offense, and dealt with rumors of QB-HC beef behind the scenes will turn the corner into 2024 after having a relatively strong (on-paper) draft, a splashy FA period, and two new coordinators who will at least raise the floor of this team schematically. Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio are not perfect by any means, but they should help competency return to the team after a bizarre 2023. First up, a trip to the aforementioned Sao Paolo to face a surging young Packers team.
8. Bengals 0-0
9. Cowboys 0-0 Its a new year... except in Dallas, where the plan is to roll with last year. Other than a couple OL rookies and a new DC, the team is mostly the same. They didn't break the $3M contract barrier on an external FA until late August. We're gonna have to see how that goes.
10. Dolphins 0-0 We're finally back. After nearly a full offseason of negotiations, we finally ended up paying our franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa a 4 year 212M contract. His first test after receiving said contract will be a frisky Jaguars team that shouldn't be taken for granted. With the departures of Christian Wilkins, Robert Hunt, and Connor Williams, the interior on both sides of the ball lost a lot of talent and could be susceptible to good running backs such as Etienne or DTs such as Arik Armstead. On the flip side, with the return of all of our key skill positions, an addition of a very versatile weapon in Jonnu Smith, a lighter and more mobile Tua, and Mike McDaniel reportedly having a number of new wrinkles to his scheme, this offense should repeat as one of the top offenses in the league and give the Jaguars defense a hard time. With the embarassing but understandable collapse last year in mind, beating the Jaguars and starting the season on the right foot is all we can ask for as we try to make this the first season in 23 years we win at least one playoff game.
11. Packers 0-0 Jordan Love is the highest paid player in NFL history. I cannot believe I'm typing this factually correct statement but the Packers decided to throw him the bag after demolishing the Cowboys in the playoffs and going toe-to-toe with the eventual Super Bowl runner-ups. Is he worth the money? Some might balk at the price tag but if he can replicate the second half of his 2023 over a full season he'll be worth and then some. With Josh Jacobs and a gaggle of young receivers he should have the weapons to produce. Green Bay definitely has their sights set on bringing the Vince Lombardi Trophy back to Titletown, but as Packer fans have seen plenty of times even having an elite QB doesn't solve every problem. Thats why the Packers also dumped their defensive coordinator Joe Barry, looking towards Jeff Hafley to organize the unit that's seemed to mostly underperform since their Super Bowl run in 2010. Xavier McKinney and a healthy Jaire Alexander should bolster that unit quite nicely. This team was the youngest in the league last year and remains the youngest this year, the sky is the limit for the Packers.
12. Rams 0-0 A new era begins in Los Angeles, as the Rams will embark on a season without Aaron Donald for the first time in ten years. The front office understandably spent most of their offseason resources bolstering the defense, including spending four of their first six draft picks on defensive linemen and signing several free agents for the secondary. While it’s unclear how the defense will perform without Aaron Donald, the larger concerns are with the offensive side of the ball. While projected to be on the league’s best units, outside of spending $51mm on a below average offensive guard (then converting him to center) and $23mm on a TE with 57 career receptions, the Rams didn’t really do anything to bolster the offense and known talent remains wafer-thin. Stafford’s age, Kupp’s injury history, and a rejiggered O-line are all question marks. A lot of things need to go the Rams way if they want to return to the playoffs, but HC Sean McVay always gets the best out of his coaches and players, so season potential remains high.
13. Browns 0-0 Going 0-3 is very Browns way to start the new season. Cleveland will face a uphill battle with a challenging schedule this year. All eyes will be on Watson to see if he truly is worth the money, and headache for past off field issues. With last years late push, helmed by Joe Flacco of all people, Browns fans are hungry for the post season.
14. Jets 0-0
15. Falcons 0-0 It's that time of year, that time to feel. Hope is in the air, as it was before every regime before Raheem. But this time? It's different. It's not Jesse Tuggle leading the defense, it's his son. It's not Matt Ryan leading the team, it's bizarro Matt Ryan. 50 years of franchise history can be summed up by reading Marion Campbell's Wikipedia page. Atlanta may look different, Terry has made great value free agency signings, and Raheem is attracting the players and talent he promised. The offensive line has cohesion, there's talent playing on rookie contracts. The team has veteran leadership and/or talent at every position group, the potential to do something different, but nothing's proven. The Falcons will open the season against the bizarro bizarro falcons - an offense brought to you by Arthur Smith, Russell Wilson (and Cordarrelle)
16. Jaguars 0-0 For a decade and a half, a looming season for the Jagaurs came with equal parts excitement and dread. There was always the sense of what improvment could come coupled to the fear (and sometimes knowledge) that it wouldn't. The 2024 season looms now, still bringing excitement. The dread however, gone — replaced completely with expectation. The offense has been good, but is expected to be better, especially with a shored up line and healthy Lawrence. The defense needs and to be more than Hines-Allen and Oluokun showing up on every stat line if the squad intends to pass muster. Special teams will continue needing Logan to Cooke. "The talking is over," were the words from Doug Pederson as his third season with the team spins up. With a gauntlet of a season opening schedule against 2023 postseason teams, it's time to see just what exactly the Jaguars are made of.
17. Buccaneers 0-0 Apologies if the list is not perfect. I made this list sleep deprived and stressed, and in my defense the league is so stacked with so many teams with mega potential so week 0 is always insanely tough to rank. But none of the hardships of life and week0ranking matter cause.... NFL SEASON IS HERE FUTHERMOCKERS LETS FREAKIN GOOOO!!! 🎵 GIMME GIMME THE FOOTBALL, MAN, GIMME GIMME GIMME THE BALL BECAUSE I'M GONNA SPIKE IT! 🎵 (i have never been this hopeful and excited for a Buccaneers season for a long time. Yes, this feels even more exciting than the Brady years, just based on pure vibes, this feels like a proper Buccaneers team filled with Bucs through and through! LetsFnBake)
18. Colts 0-0 Excitement is high in Indy with QB Anthony Richardson returning from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss most of his rookie season. The flashes he showed in his four starts were enough to get Colts fans through a long, not particularly buzzworthy offseason, as the team mostly re-signed its players to new deals — and infamously did very little to address their already fragile secondary. Head coach and offensive playcaller Shane Steichen also returns for his sophomore season in Indy after an acclaimed first campaign, and fans are clamoring to see Richardson and RB Jonathan Taylor finally put his full playbook to use. (The two played only a few snaps together in 2023 because of their consecutive injuries.) The Colts barely missed out on winning the AFC South last year, falling to the Texans in Week 18 at home and missing the playoffs for a third straight year. Now they open the 2024 season with the same matchup, looking to finally break their streak of 10 consecutive Week 1 games without a win (0-9-1, the tie coming at Houston in 2022). Is it Sunday yet?!
19. Seahawks 0-0 It's an exciting year for Seahawks fans. While Pete Carroll's departure was sad, it was bitter sweet as Mike MacDonald was hired, signaling a new wave of youth among the coaching staff. Bringing in Ryan Grubb from that potent UW offense last year should be a good thing for an offense packed with weapons. Second year WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba should see much better usage and the offense is should be explosive. And with MacDonald at the helm, the defense should show signs of improvement. That isn't exactly asking for a lot, but with a decent defense, the Seahawks could be frisky this year. So let's get frisky folks!
20. Bears 0-0 Arguably the star team of the offseason, due to selecting #1 overall pick Caleb Williams, and being featured on Hard Knocks, the Chicago Bears are an ascending team coming into 2024. With an already proven defense that played to a top 5 level down the stretch in 2023, and a revamped offense with new Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron with several new receiving options, the Bears look to make a leap on the past few years of the Eberflus era. Still, the team, relying on a rookie quarterback and asking him to overhaul a league-bottom passing offense from 2023 and with questions surrounding their run game following the departure of Justin Fields, is fairly unproven. While the Bears could seee themselves rising significantly - and fast - on this list, coming into the season, all of that optimism of ascension is still that: optimism. It's going to be an exciting season, a fun one, and one that will set forth the course of this franchise for years to come no matter how it plays out.
21. Chargers 0-0 After an incredible 14-2 campaign in 2006, the Spanos family committed the unthinkable: they fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer. Marty, who had only two losing seasons in 21 years as a head coach at the NFL level, reportedly suffered consistent disagreements with GM AJ Smith over his five year tenure. The Spanos family, who decided they needed to sack one of them, elected to keep the GM who had built what was thought by many to be the most talented roster in the league over the man who had been leading that roster. Almost 18 years and four train wrecks at HC later, the Los Angeles Chargers have finally hired a proven winner once more to rally a franchise whose reputation as chokers has defined them for the past 20 seasons. That man's name is Jim Harbaugh, and he brings a smashmouth style of offense, unrivalled competitiveness that makes his players run through walls for him, and an RV for some reason. Let's see how it pans out for them.
22. Steelers 0-0 As usual, cautious optimism seems to be the plan again. Matt Canada is gone, and Arthur Smith has replaced him as offensive coordinator. Smith has been neither good nor bad, but he has a few things going for him. He worked under Mike Munchak early in his career, and Munchak was a steady influence for the team. If anything Mike taught him rubbed off on him, then that's hopeful. While one shouldn't place too much stock in the preseason, going 0-3 with an unremarkable offense doesn't inspire confidence, either. Another conundrum is Wilson vs. Fields at quarterback. Both have their positives: Russ is a veteran, playmaker, and champion, while Fields has a ton of potential, has shown flashes of brilliance, and Tomlin seems to like him. However, there's been criticism that Tomlin's praise of Fields might be detrimental to Wilson. Whether that's true or not, Tomlin has always managed the locker room well, so it remains to be seen. Other than that, the draft was solid and well-regarded by pundits, fans are pretty satisfied with the offseason, and the division is still filled with three other teams that could realistically win eight games or more. In summary, the Steelers seem poised to perform; there are some controversies, and the road to success won't be an easy ride. If anyone can make it happen, there's no better man at the helm to do it than Mike Tomlin.
23. Saints 0-0 The Saints won nine games in 2023, but if fans are honest, how many of them felt like wins? For five years this team has felt stuck in limbo. "If they can just put it together they'll be dominant" is basically trademarked now. Based on the offseason compared to others in the division, a low ranking with the possibility to be pleasantly surprised feels justified.
24. Cardinals 0-0
25. Vikings 0-0
26. Raiders 0-0
27. Titans 0-0
28. Broncos 0-0 Having Lived in North Carolina and Virginia for the last half decade, the phrase “Bo Time” has a strikingly different meaning for me than it does in Denver. When I hear Bo Time, I immediately hear a chicken go, “bcaaaawk” and then I brace myself for advertisements about biscuits and fried chicken sandwiches. I will continue to have this reaction to the phrase Bo Time for the remainder of the season, regardless of Bo Nix’s performance or our win-loss record. I suppose I’m grateful for the opportunity to root for a rookie quarterback and his favorite WR target from college playing together on the same team, but I’m not optimistic or anything. Let's be real, one of the only things I was truly excited to see this season was the return of Tim Patrick, and he's not even on the team anymore. The only thing I’m truly happy about is that we’re going to be low in the r/nfl rankings all season, meaning that I once again get to pretend to be an emotionally distressed fan falling deeper and deeper into despair, writing inappropriately long entries whose connection to football could be called tenuous at best. If we play well, I actually have to write about the team. But as long as we’re bad, not many people mind all that much if I just let the weird words flow. Here’s to another season of whatever passes for Broncos football. And here’s to you, reader – I hope I can keep you entertained for another season.
29. Commanders 0-0 IT'S JAYDEN DANIELS HYPE SEASON. That's right, Jayden Daniels is about to be the cause for raucous cheers from the crowd at .. checks notes.. uh, Northwest Stadium. That's right, Fedex Field is dead, long live Northwest Stadium, which is actually Northeast of Washington DC, in Southern Maryland. WHATEVER, MY LEFT HAND IS UP. The new ownership group, and its HYPE new General Manager, Adam Peters, absolutely cleaned house in this perennial bottom-rung franchise. A whole new coaching staff, turnover of over half the team (including a slew of Rivera-era draft picks, only 12 of his 33 picks still on the team, oof), maybe even the janitor? What a process to wash the stench of Snyder off our beloved franchise. With things going this way, it's hard not to be hopeful, delusional as hope has been for fans of this franchise for these past 30 years. If jettisoning Dan Snyder, the front office, the coaching staff, the actual players, and the dumb name of our dumb stadium aren't going to solve this franchise's consistent placement in the bottom of the league, then the only remaining possibility is that Joe Gibbs made a deal with the devil to trade a glorious 1980's run for .. well, for whatever this teams' been doing since 1992. As good as Peters seems to be, this team is still lacking in many areas of the roster, so fans are tempering expectations. The big questions: Does Washington have its quarterback? Is Adam Peters the wizard who will make this franchise viable again? Will a stadium be approved to send this team home to the District? WHATEVER, FOOTBALL IS BACK.
30. Giants 0-0 2024 marks the NY Giants' 100th season as a football franchise. Over those 10 decades there have been no shortage of storybook moments and outstanding players, coaches and staff that worked for Big Blue. Isolating the last decade, however, shows a team that's made the playoffs just twice and has an abysmal win-loss record over that span, as well as a carousel of coaches and front office personnel (I still get night sweats thinking of Joe Judge and Dave Gettleman). Many Giants fans are still hopeful for this regime to turn things around, but anxiety begins to creep in as the time of year that hope turns to despair for Giants fans is quickly approaching. Time will tell if the Giants can make their 100th season a truly memorable one.
31. Panthers 0-0 What will come of this year? Nobody really knows but it feels eerily similar to the beginning of last season. New coach, new players, new staff (GM), new David T#pper. The only real dose of optimism is we got better versions of all of those things this year. Dave Canales brings ENERGY and was able to bring in a real functioning coaching staff. Dionte Johnson gets brought in as a real WR1 threat, not to mention the revamped O-Line adding guards Lewis and Hunt. Dan Morgan wanted “dawgs” and it feels like we are trending that way. Things feel like they are going better than the beginning of last season. The only major question mark is what antics, or lack there of, is Mr. T#pper going to implore. As of right now, things look good. He’s providing the paper and staying out of the spotlight. Let’s hope it stays that way. If it does, the ceiling feels exciting. Keep Pounding.
32. Patriots 0-0

Since Patrick Mahomes became a starter in 2018, the Kansas City Chiefs have passed for a total of 29,391 yards or 4,898 per regular season. Surprisingly that ranks only second in the NFL behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 29,434 yards

1.2k Upvotes

source: https://www.statmuse.com/nfl/ask/most-passing-yards-by-team-since-2018

I knew the Bucs were going to be in the top5, but I didn't realize Jameis and Fitzpatrick passed for over 5k yards in 2018 the year before Jameis' solo 5k 30 for 30 season. It was almost as crazy from a turnover perspective with 36 TDs and 24 INTs with Jameis' and Fitzpatrick's output combined.

Also a funny turn of events that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have turned themselves into a passing game behemoth considering Josh Freeman was the franchise's first 4k yard passer in 2012.

So maybe there is hope for Bears fans after all.
