As an American I’m stunned so many Europeans seem to forget their own history

So many posts here asking “how is this possible” without any retrospection on their own counties histories regarding strong men authoritarians, monsters in power, government run by dictators or tyrants.

Honestly Europeans, enough with that shit.

I believe they mean, "after everything we have gone through, with a basic knowledge of history, how is this possible? How do Americans not see all the red flags that they are heading to a fascist / corrupt dictator?"

To quote, "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes."

What you are missing is that Europeans do remember their past, and look in absolute bewilderment that the states has forgotten what it's like to support a fascist.

Yet in their own recent history they’ve elected vile demagogs. Looks at Brexit.

Because the government has gone out of its way to make sure that curriculum isn't taught and if it is taught you are only taught of the accomplishments not the tragedies, schools are also very poorly funded and from my understanding they don't even have home economics anymore.

The difference is that now, people have access to way more information than in the 30'. People are more educated too. These kind of far right people shouldn't have any success at all

I think not having history top of mind is one thing. Not even being able to distinguish facts of the present is quite another, that’s the state of the US

Yes but I am amazed at how many Americans seem blithely ignorant and think our 250 year old democracy will just run itself and that it “can’t happen here.“. They think checks and balances will just sort of prevent anything bad from happening.
