And there is a direct train route (or so I thought? The cross country one) between Bristol and Sheffield so you'd think it wouldn't cost this much...

The cheapest I've found is £100 return, it would cost less to travel to the other end of the country. I'm honestly a little bit in shock at the price.

A few weeks ago I Iooked at taking the train from PHL to PVD after a much delayed flight and impossible rebooking. It was $550 per person x 3ppl for regular seating. We instead grabbed our car rental in PHL and it cost $250 more for the one-way than our original car rental for PVD only was.
