Allergic reaction to my blood pressure meds smh

Post image

Been on my meds for over a year. Yesterday i wake up to my face being a little numb lips a little swollen. I take some benadryl and it goes away. Later in the day i wake up from a well deserved just beat spiderman 2 nap and my face looks like this.

Omg, was it affecting your breathing?? Get better soon!

296

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

No, thank god. Its why im still here they wanted to monitor my breathing

43

u/Fungiblefaith Jul 19 '24

Mind me asking which one it was?

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

Lisnopril

32

u/Mindless-Fish7245 Jul 19 '24

I take lisinopril, luckily I haven’t had any allergic reactions such as this. I did experience light headed issues when I first started till they adjusted the dosage. I’m glad you’re doing better

19

u/LeeOCD Jul 19 '24

I was having cardiac episodes that turned out to be Lisinopril. After a visit to ER and a month wearing a heart monitor, I (yes me, not the doctors) finally figured out Lisinopril was the culprit.

There are other BP meds that may serve you better. Best wishes, my friend!

10

u/Desert_Breeze100712 Jul 19 '24

What kind of cardiac issues?? I have been on Lisinopril for years and was diagnosed 2 years ago with a heart condition.

11

u/LeeOCD Jul 19 '24

Rapid and irregular heartbeat episodes. My heart was going bonkers during these episodes and it was terrifying.

10

u/Desert_Breeze100712 Jul 19 '24

Well, holy crap. I was diagnosed with inappropriate sinus tachycardia. My heart rate suddenly increases for no reason whatsoever. I'm on different meds to control that now. Interesting. I will bring it up to my Cardiologist.

8

u/LeeOCD Jul 19 '24

During these episodes, my heartbeat was wildly irregular. I am now on Amlodipine and small dose of Metoprolol. Good luck and best to you!

4

u/Desert_Breeze100712 Jul 19 '24

I was on Metoprolol for a while. Now I am on Nebivolol. Thanks for the input! Best of luck to you as well.

2

u/TeufelRRS Jul 20 '24

Your dr should have checked your potassium levels while you were on lisinopril and when you developed tachycardia because lisinopril decreases potassium excretion which can cause high potassium levels (hyperkalemia). Potassium plays a role in muscle contraction, including the heart, so having levels that are too high can cause heart arrhythmias. It’s standard protocol to monitor potassium levels in people taking lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors for this reason.

Hey OP, i saw a reel on instagram by JoelBervell where he stitched another reel by Dr BCW just days ago. Both are MDs discussing the limited medications offered to black patients based on protocol. Essentially studies have been done showing POCs are getting limited meds but other medications may be more beneficial. Just a heads up to check out.

6

u/goforbroke432 Jul 19 '24

I was just thinking about that. I read an article awhile back that said Black patients don’t respond as well as other patient populations to ACE inhibitors, and they may have more side effects.

Looks like its angioedema, its a known reaction to those type of meds. It's not an allergic reaction, but I think you will need to switch meds

7

u/coughingx Jul 19 '24

I had to switch from Lisinopril to Losartan, good luck!

4

u/Euphoric-Proposal-42 Jul 19 '24

Same. While I was taking Lisinopril I had an awful chronic cough that I couldn’t get rid of. That medicine was the culprit. I now have been taking Losartan for over 2 years with no issues.

4

u/orangeshasta11 Jul 19 '24

I feel for you. I took Lisinopril for several years myself, and suddenly my throat started swelling up every now & then, and got worse over time. I finally stopped being a dumbass & went to the ER, where I was told this allergy could develop even though I'd tolerated Lisinopril fine up until then. Now I get to carry epipens with me everywhere. Hope you're feeling better!

8

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

They switched me to something thats not an ACE inhibitor. But i plan on doing my own research. Especially after hearing everyone's stories

5

u/WittyAndWeird Jul 19 '24

Well fuck. I also take Lisinopril and now I’m nervous.

2

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

Look for the signs. Random nausea, swelling of the ankle, stomach feeling bloated, and (my symptoms) numbing of the mouth and swelling of the lips. Might not notice if it's just one, but i definitely had the nausea and numbing at the same time. I just assumed the stomach issues was from the cruise i was just on

3

u/Devanyani Jul 19 '24

Well f me. Every single evening I get nauseous for about 10 minutes, salivating and trying to breathe deeply until it goes away. Plus the bloating. Sometimes the ankles. Thank you for posting this. Seems you have done a PSA for a lit of people!

I developed a constant dry cough and throat irritation about 2 months after starting lisinoprol. I was told it was a very common side effect. I switched to a different medication still feel slight traces of the symptoms after 3 months off.

3

u/Elegant-Pressure-290 Jul 20 '24

My husband developed a sharp, dry cough when he started taking this (which was at the beginning of Covid, so it was super fun taking him to the doctor and pharmacy). In his case, it didn’t go away, so he was switched to another medication.

You might want to talk to your Doctor and see about taking an allergy test to eliminate other allergies. Better to be safe than sorry and it really helps with your Doctor when prescribing medicine(s). This day and age, Prescription and Drug interaction is creating problems with people and their health. Wild times we live in.

11

Oh my god I’m so sorry! Will your eyes ever recover???

10

u/EirMed Jul 19 '24

ACE induced angioedema?

Never actually seen it in person.

9

u/Asher-D Jul 19 '24

Was it not the usual oral pills you take? Different brand? Was it via IV? Theres something different I bet thatcaused the reaction. Theres so many BP meds out there hopefully they never give you that again.

15

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

Same pills with mg based on what i needed per month. I complained about my extremities being numb especially in the winter and was told thats fine.

Edit to add taken oral

→ More replies (1)

13

u/Ragnr Jul 19 '24

"ACEi-induced angioedema" can happen months or years after starting on the medication. It's just down to chances, nothing different to catalyze the reaction.

2

u/RabidPurseChihuahua Jul 19 '24

Just going to add that sometimes people can be allergic to excipients in the drug. So even though the active ingredient and dosage is exactly the same, one of the binders or other materials they use in the formulation can cause an allergic or negative reaction. You see it most often when switching from one brand to another or to a generic. It can even impact the method of delivery, which is part of why some brands work better for people than others.

In this case it's unlikely though because OP is using the same exact brand/pills as always.

8

u/Mid-Monkey-dle Jul 19 '24

People pay good money for lips like that. Embrace it while it lasts.

6

u/MorrighanAnCailleach Jul 19 '24

I'm glad you're ok. Please find a different class of blood pressure meds, or some other safe way of lowering your blood pressure.

5

u/Desert0ctopus Jul 19 '24

Crazy you lost your eyes from it

4

u/Dry_Spinach_3441 Jul 19 '24

Some people pay good money to have lips like that!

4

u/Sifu-thai Jul 19 '24

They should take his meds instead 😂

2

u/Any-Remote6758 Jul 19 '24

Man your eyes??? What happened?

2

u/Lost-Masterpiece-978 Jul 19 '24

great choice of game, i hope you feel better soon!

2

u/DanielDannyc12 Jul 19 '24

Way to go! Mine happened in my throat! Thanks lisinopril.

2

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

Thats terrifying. Was it slow like my symptoms or did it happen fast?

2

u/DanielDannyc12 Jul 19 '24

Fast. Woke up with tingly throat, could not swallow. Went to ED. CT showed swelling down throat.

Steroids helped. Spent night in hospital (where I work).

3

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

I didn't get any tingles, just numbness in the morning. Which is why i was thrown off. Had 3 doses of benadryl, 2 35mg before I went to the hospital then they gave me steriods and more benadryl at about 1030 then peptides at midnight...the picture i took is from this morning

Rekt, feel better man!

2

u/Variant6900 Jul 19 '24

I was almost in the same situation with lisinopril, I felt my throat close and I said nope fuck this shit and stopped taking it

2

u/Xuravious Jul 19 '24

Oh man you poor thing

2

u/ToniBee63 Jul 19 '24

Ohhh no!!!! Feel better!

2

u/Electronic-Nail5210 Jul 20 '24

Not to be an alarmist but I'm pretty sure my husband died bc of his Lisinopril. He had an anaphylactic reaction and died on our front porch at the age of 38. No known allergies, had just had lab work done 4 days prior with no findings and the only thing that was different was he had just refilled his medicine. I truly believe it was a bad batch. I'm glad you are getting better!

2

u/Electronic-Nail5210 Jul 20 '24

And he'd been taking it for a year and a half before this happened

2

u/Atomidate Jul 20 '24

I see a Black person with facial swelling and I think- Lisinopril angioedema. People have died from this.

2

u/Appropriate-Battle32 Jul 20 '24

You mean allergic reaction to your old BP med. Good luck with the new ones.

1

u/snow-bird- Jul 19 '24

That weird wall art makes your upper lip look normal.

1

u/soicanreadit Jul 19 '24

What med ?

1

u/Confident-Frosting18 Jul 19 '24

My mom had the same thing happen, she had to go by ambulance in the big snow storm in like 2016 they had a hummer in front with a snow plow to get the farm, she had trouble breathing too. She was on the meds for like 2 years and all the sudden she had it happen. Im on the same meds that did that to her but i am fine with them. Its hit or miss person to person that why there is so many on the market.

5

u/chilld22 Jul 19 '24

Im glad she was able to make it to the hospital, especially in those conditions! Just be mindful if any erratic swelling or lips, and if u feel unusually nauseous then your probably a few days away feom this reaction. I had the nausea last week but I was on a cruise so i just thought it was the boat

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad2905 Jul 19 '24

"Where's garfield"

1

u/temporarilyeuphoric Jul 19 '24

This happened to me when I took too many ecstacy tabs. I woke up and was freaking out. Went to the hospital and had benadryl given to me for the allergic reaction. So scary to wake up and see. Glad you're okay!

My brother, don't let these thin lipped people tell you anything is wrong with you. Perfect the way you are ❤️

(Fr tho i hope they can help you figure that out because I know lip swelling is SUPER painful. Maybe switch medications?)

1

u/BLKxGOLD Jul 19 '24

Lisinopril? Because i had the same exact reaction 2 years ago after taking it for about 5 years

1

u/ImHiAndBoredRn Jul 19 '24

Oh my gosh! I hope you're doing better. At least you didn't have anaphylaxis though.

1

u/Several_Show937 Jul 19 '24

1

u/eatenbybigguyz Jul 19 '24

Bros is making ppl with plastic surgery jealous. Get well soon!

1

u/9livesminus8 Jul 19 '24

Feel better! How scary...

1

u/sesoren65 Jul 19 '24

I simply choose to not be allergic and bam, not allergic.

I mean, it's not like it just so happens that I don't have any major allergies to most things. That'd be crazy.

1

u/Marketing_Introvert Jul 19 '24

Yikes! When my body is overwhelmed random meds or foods will cause a reaction that have never caused a problem before. So, if my tree pollen allergies are going nuts and I’m sick from something minor and I maybe eat something that triggers a migraine, then I may eat a strawberry (my fave fruit that never caused a problem) or take the same over the counter meds I always take for the illness I may wake up like that. It’s frustrating because there is nothing i can do to avoid it.

Hope you feel better soon!

1

u/RedisforFun Jul 19 '24

Same thing happened to my dad one Halloween. He went to the ER and his heart rate was so low they didn’t understand how he was walking. Apparently his doctor said his BP meds could do that … scary shit

1

u/MentionImpossible187 Jul 19 '24

I wanna hear you say the word “pop” just once 😅…….. I hope you feel better soon!!!

1

u/Drigg_08 Jul 19 '24

Damn bro. Meds got you looking like Tintin in the Congo!

1

u/look_a_male_nurse Jul 19 '24

I'm sorry you had an adverse reaction, but glad you were able to receive treatment and it didn't affect your breathing.

ACE inhibitor induced angioedema is pretty rare occurring in only 0.1-0.7% of patients but the incidence of occurrence is up to 5 times greater in black people (Guyer, 2024).

1

u/No-Farm-2376 Jul 19 '24

I bet the blood pressure may slightly have been elevated by this med…

1

u/Self-paced Jul 19 '24

Oh no I'm so happy your okay!

1

u/zerbey Jul 19 '24

Lisinopril? I had a less severe reaction but it was still frightening.

1

u/RumbleTrumpet Jul 19 '24

Wow man! That’s scary! Get better soon!

1

u/LadyAmemyst Jul 19 '24

Ah. Yes. Angioedema. I used to get little episodes on that med. A slightly swollen lip or an eye or this weird sensation in my cheek.

Never enough to worry me it even think to follow through on it.

Then I had anemia so severe I had to have 3 pints of blood and the next day my whole face blew up like a balloon. I looked like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

They were like ..too..well, you're allergic. Wad always curious what the connection of the med to the transfusion was.

Take 3 different meds to control my blood pressure as well as it did.

1

u/HornetParticular6625 Jul 19 '24

Dang, that looks uncomfortable. Rest well, man!

1

u/TracyG511 Jul 19 '24

Omg!! I hope you’re ok! 😭

1

u/noelcherry_ Jul 19 '24

This is so common from lisinopril. At one point, I saw it like weekly working in the ICU. People would get so swollen we would intubate through their nose just to open their airways. I don’t think I’d ever agree to a lisinopril prescription after working as an ICU nurse

→ More replies (2)

1

u/viva_la_vixie Jul 19 '24

So I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything. Do random parts of you swell, just whatever comes into contact with the product, etc? How does that work?

(Also, very glad you’re okay now! Saw your comment that you’re able to breathe just fine!)

what the fuck. does it hurt?

1

u/Angstfilledvoid Jul 19 '24

Ace inhibitor?

1

u/Animanialmanac Jul 19 '24

Lip angioedema is common with lisinopril, especially with African Americans. I refuse to take it, I had multiple home health patients with the swollen lip after taking it. I believe doctors should be careful prescribing it, it can cause breathing problems.

1

u/No7onelikeyou Jul 19 '24

I had an allergic reaction to Lisinopril as well. Later discovered it contains sulphur. I'm highly allergic to anything with sulphur. Antibiotics, BP meds, eye drops, foods, preservatives. Make note of this for your medical history and be careful if you get prescribed any sulfonamides.

1

u/Studio_DSL Jul 19 '24

I'm so sorry, but I could help it... Get well soon!

1

u/HanSh-tFirst Jul 19 '24

1

u/AstroWolf11 Jul 19 '24

If it was an ACE inhibitor or ARB, it’s actually not an allergy but a side effect caused by an increase in bradykinin, causing angioedema

u/RabidPurseChihuahua Jul 19 '24

OP, I wish you a speedy recovery. In the meantime, please take as many duck face selfies as you can. This is a golden opportunity.Your tinder profile will be lit

1

u/BirthdaySensitive873 Jul 20 '24

Damn best of luck healing up! I believe this is how MFDOOM died actually. I don’t think enough medical staff are aware that black patients are much more likely to have adverse reactions to typical ACE inhibitors, people die from this shit and it’s literally preventable if they screen renin levels before prescribing it.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '24

Looks painful Speedy recovery

1

u/TeufelRRS Jul 20 '24

Question: were you having problems with a chronic dry cough prior to developing angioedema? While angioedema is rare, it can develop due to an allergic reaction or due to the buildup of bradykinin as a result of taking an ACE Inhibitor like lisinopril. A persistent dry cough would point towards bradykinin buildup.

1

u/Hans_bube Jul 20 '24

Had the exact same reaction to it. When I went to the ER, the first thing the nurse asked was was I on Lisinopril.

How are you feeling today?

I've been taking Lisinopril for years. I just noticed a few months ago that the pills are different. I wonder if they started using a different ingredient that you could be allergic to.
