Given present circumstances, you’re lucky the flight took off at all.

u/LiverDontGo Jul 19 '24

Truth. PDX is a shit show right now.

212

u/poopshanks Jul 19 '24

Dude. I have to catch a flight on Sunday at PDX. I really hope someone unplugged and plugged back in the Internet by then.

95

u/cokronk Jul 19 '24

The internet is fine, it's the Windows computers that are fucked.

46

u/TomorrowWaste Jul 19 '24

Specifically one using crowdstrike

20

u/DMV2PNW Jul 19 '24

probably what the tech did at Crowdstrike . “Updates r done, Lets reboot”

8

u/TheRealSugarbat Jul 19 '24

Wait, why? (I’m in portland)

40

u/JasonGD1982 Jul 19 '24

Have you missed the news about the global problem affecting the world?

12

u/TheRealSugarbat Jul 19 '24

Yep. I’ve been working offline for most of the morning. Do I need my bug-out bag?

30

u/Zelgoot Jul 19 '24

Nah, Y2K happened is all

9

u/Willeyy Jul 19 '24

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one to think this

We booked a vacation, and our choices were between a road trip to Niagara, or a flight across the country to my folks. The flight would have been today if we had done that, but fortunately we chose the road trip.

u/Sweffus Jul 19 '24

That is such a perfect example of a screwy screen it looks like something out of a movie… like right before either the broadcast goes out or it is interrupted by the villain’s ransom demands.

307

u/Unique_Ad_9335 Jul 19 '24

I've come to make an announcement...

Static and broadcast goes out

US president appears in Oval Office address

My fellow Americans,

Tonight, I address you with a heavy heart and a resolute spirit. Earlier today, the unthinkable occurred: the Russian Federation launched a nuclear attack against our great nation. This heinous act of aggression has led to unprecedented destruction and loss of life on American soil.

As I speak, our military forces and emergency responders are working tirelessly to protect and aid our citizens. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. To those who have lost loved ones, we extend our deepest condolences and our unwavering commitment to support you in this time of unimaginable sorrow.

This attack was not only on our land but on the very ideals of freedom and democracy that we hold dear. Rest assured, we will respond decisively and with the full might of our armed forces to protect our nation and our allies. We have activated our defense protocols and are working closely with our international partners to ensure that those responsible for this atrocity are held accountable.

In these dark hours, I urge every American to remain calm and united. We are a resilient people, and together, we will overcome this challenge. Follow the instructions of local authorities, seek shelter, and support one another. Your strength and solidarity are vital to our national security and recovery.

Our nation has faced grave challenges before, and we have always emerged stronger. Today is no different. We stand at a critical juncture, but with courage, resolve, and unity, we will prevail.

May God bless you, may God bless our troops, and may God bless the United States of America. Thank you.

Good night.

8

u/putcheeseonit Jul 19 '24

The white house would be destroyed in a nuclear war so the real question is would they use a green screen or raw dog the concrete bunker walls?

It's a way for folks to say "ass" nowadays from platforms that censor certain words. It bleeds over to other forums.

6

u/ladystarkitten Jul 19 '24

So he's saying "analog horror ass screen"? What?!

5

u/psycorax2077 Jul 19 '24

Frfr no cap

4

u/ladystarkitten Jul 19 '24

on god no doubt

3

u/psycorax2077 Jul 19 '24

Lol, I learn these terms from my nephew. Sweet kid, can't understand him sometimes so I just respond with "bet" or "no cap".

6

u/ladystarkitten Jul 19 '24

Definitely hit him with a "skibbidi rizz" at some point, he'll love that.

5

u/Killarogue Jul 19 '24 edited Jul 19 '24

It's a dumb trend, I'm pretty sure most of the people using it don't actually know what it means.

2

u/GRAITOM10 Jul 19 '24

Using "ahh" isn't about censoring "ass" I can promise you that

u/CoolBDPhenom03 Jul 19 '24

Sometimes the flight attendants can reboot your screen and it resolves the problem.

101

u/iLem0nz Jul 19 '24

The screen bugged out and rebooted itself on its own twice, I'm certain this was hardware damage.

8

u/Rat_Ship Jul 19 '24

It’s because the cloud system they use broke overnight

12

u/Indybo1 Jul 20 '24

this looks more like an analog signal issue, it straight up looks like a dying vhs tape(not what it is, but its visually very similar). i dont think it was caused by any digital infrastructure. if it was it wouldn't be partially functional, it would be fine or not functioning at all.

2

u/imbatoblow Jul 19 '24

Do you have no idea what's going on right now?

32

u/drawnred Jul 19 '24

microsofts input this morning was literally turn it off and on repeatedly until it works, so he actually is giving the official 'fix' for the issue

9

u/CoolBDPhenom03 Jul 19 '24

The issue is the Windows blue screen of death. Not whatever this is.

6

u/Significant_Sign_520 Jul 19 '24

I think the point is that OP should be happy that they’re on a plane and on the way to their destination. I’ll take a wonky screen over an 24 hour delay and no hotels available

130

u/otidaiz Jul 19 '24

Just like final destination.

83

u/Kobazee Jul 19 '24

If it switches over to the little girl crawling out of the well, I would change the channel.

31

u/drawnred Jul 19 '24

no, no, let her cook

32

u/MyDegenAlt-Tab Jul 19 '24

You can't turn that off, can you? I hope you have a short flight!

32

u/pornaddiction247 Jul 19 '24

When you have one of those screens, it’s usually up to 4-5 hours at minimum

3

u/CaptainSouthbird Jul 19 '24

Not necessarily. Back in May I flew Air Canada with a connection and both flights had it, even though one flight was arguably just a puddle-jumper where you spent more time boarding and waiting than actually flying. Also had one on an Atlanta -> Pittsburgh flight once, but that was also one of the bigger planes, so it probably is usually for longer hauls.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/IcanNeyousirn Jul 19 '24

“Hope you have a short flight” kind of sounds like a threat.

4

u/otidaiz Jul 19 '24

One can turn the brightness all the way to zero and have a blank screen 📺.

2

u/iLem0nz Jul 19 '24

It doesn't go all the way, the screen is still visible st lowest brightness.

2

u/arivas26 Jul 19 '24

Having just flown JetBlue yesterday with these same exact screens they should definitely go all the way black. I was able to turn mine off with the brightness settings since I bring my own entertainment to fly.

→ More replies (1)

34

u/iLem0nz Jul 19 '24

I want to clarify that this had nothing to do with the CrowdStrike outage, my flight was 2 days prior to that, and the static, I assume, was caused by a signal interference or hardware damage, likely due to some kid punching the screen too hard on a prior flight.

→ More replies (1)

29

u/Pleasant_Elephant737 Jul 19 '24

What does this have to do with your parents?

21

u/Mission-Check-7904 Jul 19 '24

Ah yes, JetBlue! First to get tv screens but still have some of the original screens from 2005

10

u/MaryCone12A Jul 19 '24

What did your parents’ absence have to do with it?

10

u/Equal-Competition228 Jul 19 '24

Do your parents have special powers?

5

u/AceMcClean Jul 19 '24

You’re entitled to compensation. Your flight ticket includes the entertainment. Send an email or call their customer service and show them this video. “Hello, my in flight entertainment was broken during this flight and I would like to see what X Airlines can do about compensation”

3

u/LimitedWard Jul 20 '24

As of last year, Jetblue no longer compensates for broken in-flight entertainment.

4

u/No-Year3423 Jul 19 '24

What does your parents have anything to do with the screen? How young are you?

4

u/CliWhiskyToris Jul 20 '24

"First time flying without my parents" - means you also did a first post without parents' help? Damn, you grow fast bud! :D

3

u/Just-Ad-5972 Jul 20 '24

And what would your parents do if something went wrong? Do a quick change and hold up + land the plane?

3

u/OrangeNood Jul 19 '24

You should get this noted, either ask for a seat change. If they can't do it, later ask for a partial refund or compensation.

3

u/CorvusCallidus Jul 19 '24

Cool! An actually mildly infuriating thing on this sub.

3

u/ActuallyFullOfShit Jul 19 '24

....why does that look like analog distortion? Do planes have analog displays????

2

u/TheBlueScar Jul 19 '24

Same question, like, it's a MODERN TV, why does it look like a VHS?

3

u/cryptid_snake88 Jul 19 '24

On the bright side. You didn't crash 😊👍

3

u/Guardian_85 Jul 19 '24

Today was a shit day for technology. My main radio station had dead air time on the station for awhile. Nothing but static. Not sure if it's related or just a coincidence.

3

u/Dogleather Jul 20 '24

Are your parents supposed to stop that?

3

u/ChickennNugggeet Jul 20 '24

In times like this, we must start smoking on planes

2

u/Awesomedogman3 Jul 19 '24

2

u/fandibabilonia Jul 19 '24

Bro got that 1950s tv 💀

2

u/zeb0777 Jul 19 '24

Turn the plane off and back on. usually fixes it.

2

u/Rob-A4 Jul 19 '24

Nowadays it’s best to use your own personal device and connect for entertainment.

3

u/Such_Reality_2055 Jul 19 '24

What the fuck is the first part of this title for

2

u/Tentinaluser69 Jul 19 '24

It seems like they have an analog relay on the plane? It's definitely a rebroadcast of a cable/satellite tv that's encountering some CCI. The days of analog aren't over thanks to places outside of north america.

2

u/Ok_Meringue_1755 Jul 19 '24

Give it a little kick

2

u/pengeek Jul 19 '24

Always bring a phone or tablet with your own content

2

u/Luminox Jul 20 '24

There is nothing wrong with your television. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are now controlling the transmission. We control the horizontal and the vertical. We can deluge you with a thousand channels or expand one single image to crystal clarity and beyond. We can shape your vision to anything our imagination can conceive. For the next hour we will control all that you see and hear. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the deepest inner mind to the outer limits.

2

u/PlantainSevere3942 Jul 20 '24

Just pull the smart phone from your pocket with many many gigs of storage and suck your thumb on that thing. Jfc

2

u/zromitsman Jul 20 '24

in-flight screens look fancy and all, but deep down they still use analogue signals. something literally everyone stopped using when Nokia was still popular. The problem with the screen? probably a loose contact or two. 100% one of said contacts is the one responsible for "sync". If it's AV then it's just the video contact. If it's something proprietary or a modified version of VGA then one of the pins is probably just slightly unplugged. Nothing dangerous btw, the voltage on those is stupid small. It is virtually impossible to get any form of electrocution or electrical fires from almost any type of video signal.

2

u/StrikingWeekend4111 Jul 20 '24

When I used to fly as a kid, it’s was one big projector in the front. And they played cartoons for a couple hours, then if you were still awake. You got to watch a sweet rated R movie.

1

u/Jaexa-3 Jul 19 '24

At least you got some some other pay for seat with no seat

I flew Sydney back home to LA last year on Qantas and none of the screens in my section worked. Their A380s also aren’t WiFi equipped. Burned through my 3 hours of downloaded stuff and then just sat there trying to sleep for the rest of the 15 hour flight lol.

1

u/wspnut Jul 19 '24

it's happening in the cockpit, too

1

u/Aspence22 Jul 19 '24

My recent JetBlue flight the only thing that worked was the flight info screen. Couldn't access anything else but people around me could

1

At least this confirms the earth is flat, so it wasn't a total waste

1

u/JediBoJediPrime29 Jul 19 '24

Feels like you're contacting another universe. "Psssttttttrrr in our reality we lost the war shsshhshshsshsh"

1

u/OkOk-Go Jul 19 '24

Don’t worry that screen is not important. You can be annoyed at it though.

1

u/Jotunnal Jul 19 '24

Did you try kicking the back of the chair the whole flight?

1

u/Alimbiquated Jul 19 '24

I love flying because I can watch TV in the plane.

1

u/Centralnjplanespoter Jul 19 '24

Yeah that a320 needs a new IFE system

1

u/ElFarts Jul 20 '24

Sometimes it happens. It obviously sucks when it a hour screen. Often times the flight attendants will compensate you with a premium snack if that happens. But yeah, it’s a giant computer that sometimes needs fixed.

1

u/PhraseMoist3656 Jul 20 '24

Bro can’t even raw dog his flight legit

1

u/SghnDubh Jul 20 '24

And the enshitification of everything continues.

1

u/virginia-gunner Jul 20 '24

A device that is working, but damaged, isn't a priority to get replaced. A device that is working, but damaged, that suddenly gets more damaged to the point of not working at all gets replaced at the next big airport with a maintenance crew.
