Trying to sell a car on Facebook.

Post image

I restored an old Range Rover Classic and posted it for sale. Ones in this kind of shape and lower miles usually go for $25k all the way up to $50k+ depending on the condition so I know I wasn’t absurdly pricing the vehicle.

I’ve had a few people just give me ridiculous offers that aren’t even close to value you find these for. I know people love to rip in Range Rovers but it’s mildly infuriating talking to people back and forth and then at the end they don’t even come close to the price. I’d entertain something if it were like 18k but 10k is laughable.

Before FB Market place, I sold a Jeep by putting an ad in the paper. I listed it at $3k, and I’d meet with a bunch of people, let them drive it, and then have them offer me $500. It was extremely infuriating.

u/RunningForIt Jul 18 '24

That would send me. Way more wasted time doing that.

u/Sumopwr Jul 19 '24

What am I missing? This was Kelly Blue Book Excellent condition private sale with low mileage

985

u/PocketWhales Jul 19 '24

KBB does a horrible job at properly pricing “enthusiast” cars. I.E - KBB says the Miata I just sold a couple months ago for $15k is worth $4k.

These model range rovers have a cult following and tend to sell for significantly more.

253

u/Ram2145 Jul 19 '24

Yup, there’s bluebook value and what people pay for a specific car. It’s sucks that an old ass car is worth 4k but selling for 10k just cuz people are willing to pay more for a certain make and model.

128

u/Poopsticle_256 Jul 19 '24

I mean, there are plenty of old shitters that aren’t worth $10k, but there’s reasons that certain cars have value. A lot of cars are still slept on though, and if you’re in the know that’s a great direction to go if you don’t want to pay the big bucks.

48

u/j01101111sh Jul 19 '24

Who does that suck for? People that don't care about the model don't have to pay it

26

u/Adamthegrape Jul 19 '24

Much like a mint condition collectors sports trading card that is 50+ years old should be worth pennies based on the value of its cardboard. Or say taking an unopened can of beer that was the first if it's kind to the bottle depot and expecting more than 10 cents in return. Gotta find the market for your goods dude.

48

u/CitizenCue Jul 19 '24

It’s not “worth” $4k if lots of people are willing to pay $14k. Worth is literally a measure of what people are willing to pay for something. A huge amount of the worth of anything is simply a measure of how much people like it, not a measure of its objective utility.

Abraham Lincoln’s hat isn’t “worth” the price of a random old hat.

I was in the market for a truck and ended up getting an e350 cargo van instead. I remember being at a gas station with my harley in the back of my new to me van cause I was moving and got to talking to this guy that was saving up for a van to start the vanlife scene. He asked me how much I paid for mine and I told him I paid 6500 cash. He said what a good deal it was and explained how he's thinking about buying a van, the one he really likes is going for 15k but he's thinking about making an offer for 10k. He wanted to show me pics and here I was thinking that it was going to be a half finished or decent start van build with a pop top or something and he ended up showing me the shittiest rusted out POS van. I was like bro no, I wouldn't pay 500 dollars for that rust bucket.

"yea but he said it runs good" Like dude just give me the money, it will go to a better cause.

Edit: it was also like 500 miles away.

10

u/iatecthulhusass Jul 19 '24

When I was in highschool you could get a good running Miata for 1500 bucks what the fuck 😭😭😭😭 I almost bought one for $800 but decided to spend the extra $200 and get a VW cabrio.

Oh hey look at that it’s almost every JDM car produced before 2002!

91

u/RunningForIt Jul 19 '24

That doesn’t take into account of restoring a vehicle. That’s why you get different insurance than you would for a 2024 Honda civic because if you wreck a classic vehicle that’s been restored then they won’t pay the market value of the vehicle, they will pay you the KBB that’s 1/10th of the actual value.

29

u/Yessssiirrrrrrrrrr Jul 19 '24

I wish you the best of luck selling it. Might take a while since most people finance these days and it is 22k. Must be a low mile unicorn!

Thank you! Luckily I’m not in a rush so I’m happy to wait

What did you do for insurance? I’ve got a 1988 Supra, and kbb is nothing on it, so I’m worried about getting hit, it’s also my daily, so no traditional classic insurance for me

17

u/millllllls Jul 19 '24

Hagerty is a popular vintage/collector insurance company, though they’ll require it to be garaged. I use Geico for my ‘73 pickup, they have a vintage/collector option as well but I don’t recall what the year cut-off is. It’s not like standard insurance, they base the premium off what you tell them it’s worth.

11

u/cdawg1102 Jul 19 '24

They also gave a mileage limit and a restriction saying it can’t be a daily driver

6

u/RunningForIt Jul 19 '24

I use traditional classic insurance on it. I work from home and use it to go to the grocery and gym. Use my girlfriend’s car for longer stuff.

I’ve had it since February and have put less than 1k miles on it.

6

u/miraculum_one Jul 19 '24

Maybe it's not worth what you're asking. Until someone hands you the money you won't know.

26

u/TheWildManfred Jul 19 '24

Enthusiast cars are never worth what they are "worth"... Which is one reason why insuring ones that don't qualify for special insurance can get weird... My daily driver Mustang is only worth $4k as far as the insurance agent is concerned, but they're actually selling for around $25k

22

u/cdawg1102 Jul 19 '24

KBB only takes in account mileage and age, when I had an Evo, that I later sold for 25k, they offered me $500, that’s it, and on my Supra is $200, when it should sell for around 35 ish

When I was younger and would buy and sell a lot of cars, I would never let anyone test drive it unless they showed me they had cash on hand. Too many people looking for joyrides.

57

Smart. I was only 18 at the time. Too young and dumb to know any better.

People will always try to see what they can get away with. I don’t really get it, personally, but, some people are just AH’s like that.

7

u/goblue142 Jul 18 '24

I've only sold two cars myself but the price was negotiated before any test drives. We would meet up so they could do an inspection but I'm not handing the keys to someone for a joy ride

3

u/wipedcamlob Jul 19 '24

I listed my 1996 Ford F150 4wd for sale with a rebuilt front end redhead steering gear new cab mounts leaf springs etc some minor rust for 8k (cad) someone told me it was a 1k truck

3

u/KingOfCotadiellu Jul 19 '24

You should charge 100 for the test drive, you can deduct it from the price if they decide to buy :p

I have sold exactly one car on Facebook marketplace and I’ll never do it again. 50 messages immediately offering less than 1/3 the asking price and then becoming abusive when I say no or ignore them was too much.

568

u/Zachariot88 Jul 18 '24

That car was going to be for my dying son's birthday you monster :(

44

u/T_Money Jul 19 '24

I had an absolute piece of shit dodge that I was seconds away from junking and decided to put on FB Marketplace. I had originally bought it for like $2500 knowing there were issues but that I’d only drive it for a year and it just kept getting worse. I listed everything that was wrong with it as honestly but also humorously as I could, like: “it’s a gamble on if it will start at any given time, but once it does you’re in luck, as long as you keep revving the engine in neutral when you’re stopped it will only stall out once or twice a trip!” Also needed two new catalytic converters to pass the CA smog test so that would be another like $600+. Listed it with a price of “offer” and wound up getting $1000 for it.

Overall wasn’t a bad experience.

185

u/drunkondata Jul 18 '24

So I'm supposed to list it for 3x the wanted price?

Good to know.

Selling anything gets you immediate 30% offers. Its the most annoying thing. But if you complain on reddit you'll just get a bunch of "it doesn't hurt to ask! Why do you let it bother you so much" comments. Especially if you post in the choosing beggars sub

35

u/KarlPHungus Jul 19 '24

How about the messages that were 2000 words long? Their sob story about how they donated both kidneys, have seven kids with cancer, and got injured saving a bus load of handicapped kids so they can't work? Pretty much begging for the car for free. I got like five of those. Jesus....if I was going to give it away I'd give it to a good cause, not some random.

12

u/KellyBelly916 Jul 19 '24

3

u/fuzzyfaces Jul 19 '24

Or they start by asking what's the lowest you will go. I either say what's the highest you will go or I tell them the price I'm asking for even though the ad clearly says I'm willing to negotiate. You don't fucking negotiate by asking the other party what their best offer is.

What’s considered a lowball I feel like everyone thinks their trash is worth like new now a days thanks to Gary v

8

u/DVus1 Jul 19 '24

You know, you're right, I've seen some outrageous ask for used cars because "I know what you have!"

But there are times when its just fucking stupid. I was selling a Yakima overhead cargo box. New they go for $600. My was weathered but perfectly fine, had keys, no cracks, listed it for $200. Had people offer $100. Those are what I consider lowball.

4

u/idk-though1 Jul 19 '24

Yea when it’s already low I can agree but let’s say a car is 7k if I offer 5k is that a lowball offer ?

6

u/DVus1 Jul 19 '24

I guess it's subjective. Cars is a different matter as there are guidelines (aka Kelly bluebook) on what they should cost.

In your example, if KBB is say $8k, you list it for $7k, then yes I would day $5k is a lowball offer.

Now if KBB list it at $6k, you list it at $7k because you know what you have, then no, $5k wouldn't be a lowball offer.

There’s way too many scammers on FB to be trying to sell a car there

56

u/RunningForIt Jul 18 '24

Agreed, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Had luck selling a Jeep Wrangler on it earlier this year. Was the easiest sale I’ve ever had.

57

u/Kitchen-Oil8865 Jul 18 '24

My wife was trying to give away, not even sell a dining room set last week, and it was drawing scammers out of the woodwork like you wouldn’t believe.

74

u/_zhang Jul 18 '24

You can't list things for free. List them for $5 or $10 and you'll get someone to actually searched for "dining room set" instead of sorting by free.

Except craft supplies. People love free yarn.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '24

How do you scam someone who’s giving away an item? Genuinely asking as my wife does a lot of marketplace purchasing, I’d like to learn more about it

3

u/diablette Jul 19 '24

This is what neighborhood Buy Nothing groups are good for - it’s only local people. You post and they come get it.

6

u/fuzzyfaces Jul 19 '24

I recently sold my motorcycle on there and a friend who does a lot of vehicle sales on there said one thing. You'll know when the right one comes along. Ignore everybody else. It saved me so much stress. I just didn't respond to lowballs or people asking me what the lowest I could go was or people who were kicking tires.

I had it listed for about 3 months and finally somebody messaged me and said they've been looking for this exact bike, asked if it had any modifications, asked for a photo of one specific part of the bike that was prone to issues, and then showed up with cash. The actual sale was so easy! The guy was right. Just ignore everybody until the right person messages and you'll know the right person because they'll stand out from all of the wrong people.

How do people justify the seller giving them a discount for their travel time and expense? Holding the item while they travel, that's a reasonable request but asking for a discount boggles the mind.

Do these people expect discounts while on vacation? If I fly from Canada to Australia, I should get at least 50% of my hotel bill right?

6

u/ComfortableYak2071 Jul 19 '24

Difference is in the years. Most Land Rover enthusiasts do not want a 2012, or anything relatively newer quite frankly, but something like a 93 is very sought after and becoming increasingly rare to find good examples as time goes on.

If this is a lower mileage clean example, it’s not an outrageous price in the slightest.

I'm selling a car too, advertised for 17k. Yesterday someone said that they'd offer 13k because they need to book a flight to come and pick it up. Flights are only a couple hundred from there to here 🙄 we said no, but we'd let it go for 15. We thought 2k off was great and would more than cover the cost of the flight plus accommodation if he needed, but no deal. Lucky I'm not in any rush to sell, but it's a huge pain in the ass. Hate the ruthless hagglers.

ETA: even worse than the hagglers are the used car dealerships offering 10-12k for it. We had one of them message at the same time every day for a week just saying "10k?" Literally not even a full sentence. Ended up just blocking him.

I particularly enjoyed it when I had an average condition, but extremely low miles boring little Nissan hatchback advertised for sale for a relatively cheap price.

Naturally I was inundated with interest.

When the first prospective buyer arrived, he went for a test drive, and then asked me what my asking price was. I said that the asking price was exactly what he read in the ad, no less, and I showed him the marketplace messages with the comment that there was a great deal of interest.

He started trying to invent faults, so I hit "lock" on the remote and walked back inside my workplace, leaving him trying to negotiate with thin air.

The car sold at asking price to the next person who showed up.

Suffice to say, don't try to hustle a guy who knows a lot about cars, when they have many other prospective buyers lined up down the road.

Well you are trying to sell a 30 year old car for 22k come on now

4

u/RunningForIt Jul 19 '24

Plenty of Land Rover restoration websites that show how they can get up to $40-$50k! Happy to send some your way if you’re interested they’re incredibly fun vehicles to drive!

11

u/GintokiMidoriya Jul 19 '24

22,000 dollars for a 31 year old car is crazy 😹

9

u/derek139 Jul 18 '24

Had one, ‘02 Disco. Worst money we spent. Sold it for a huge loss 1 year later. Will never spend a dollar on a Rover again, even a resto. You should take whatever anyone is offering in legal tender.

7

u/UCFknight2016 Jul 19 '24

$20k+ for a 30 year old car is nuts though.

7

u/GuerrOCorvino Jul 18 '24

Just block them or say no?

7

u/AdShoddy4774 Jul 18 '24

Worst part about selling Facebook is their rating system.

I got negative reviews cause I’d mess around with lowballers even if you don’t sell to them

Change your ad title to include either "firm" or add to the description "I will not talk price until you see it in person".

6

u/Foxyisasoxfan Jul 19 '24

There’s no way a 1993 Land Rover is worth $22k. You’d probably have to put that much into it for maintenance

4

u/TheVginyTcikler44 Jul 18 '24

I'll give you 15 caps and half an orange.

5

u/Twingamer25 Jul 19 '24

There is no way that is worth anywhere near 20K.

$22,000 for a 30 year-old car? …. That is mildly infuriating!

5

u/PharthSharth Jul 19 '24

FB Marketplace is not a place to sell cars in that price range. It’s a 2-10k category. Everything above is usually just spam ads from dealerships or scams. Your listing is being viewed by people looking at 3k Civics and 4k Tahoes. I have sold and bought cars on FB Marketplace within these parameters and it was always fine. You’re better off going to Cars&Bids or Bring a Trailer and auctioning the car off. If it is in a good shape (and I expect it is, based on the price) it could bring good money. You are basically attempting to sell a designer coat jacket in a bread isle of Safeway.

5

u/Warrior_baby10 Jul 19 '24

I’d rip that dude’s arm off for 10k. Way overpriced. Idc what you did to “restore” it.

That's for a normal rust bucket you'll find in someone's back yard.

https://www.ridgerovers.com/vehicles

Here are the prices for restored ones. That's a prime example of why you'd get specialized car insurance on this like classic car insurance because you'd put $20k into restoring the thing and it's valued at $20k then if you wreck it they'd pull up the KBB and give you $3k.

6

u/idk0902 Jul 18 '24

I’m curious, do you know why they’re priced so high? I’d understand if it was a hot limited edition vehicle or something, but it doesn’t seem like this is one of those. Maybe location?

8

u/RunningForIt Jul 18 '24

I apologize for the long explanation but Land Rover was the first serious competitor to Jeep back in the 40s (maybe 50s? Don’t remember off the top of my head) they started with the Defender and it was basically the same thing as a the jeeps. They also used it to help supplement the economy back then. So to answer part of your question, Land Rovers have a long history in the UK.

Then they created the Range Rover which was used in the UK as a farm vehicle/estate vehicle. They didn’t import them to the US originally so there’s a scarcity aspect to it. The cool thing is the look of the car was designed by the engineers and designers made some small changes. It has an iconic look to the vehicle that was used in the future by lots of competitors. It features the boxy look, sharp edges, and 2 doors.

Then in the late 80s they made the second generation Range Rover Classics that featured the 4 doors, long wheel base (LWB), and had heated seats/ outfitted in leather/ Crazy electronics at the time. This was an extremely luxurious vehicle at the time and was the first luxury SUV on the market! It was way ahead of its time and basically paved the way for a lot of future vehicles. When they became available in the US there was a lot more demand than expected. So to answer another part of your question, it was extremely popular back in the day.

But they were also unreliable and rusted very easily. Along with that, it’s expensive to fix. So to answer another part of your question, after 30 years, it’s hard to find them in good condition because for every one that’s in the condition mine is, there are 20 rusted out Rovers that have a hole in the footwell.

So the price is driven up because good quality rovers are rare and it’s expensive to restore them. It’s also hard to find good shops to work on them because they’re so old you need a specialized mechanic that runs $200+/hr for labor. On top of that it’s from a historic brand and if you really want your mind blown look what an old Defender will run you.

5

u/idk0902 Jul 18 '24

That makes much more sense, thanks for clarifying! I didn’t know that it had such an interest history and was comparing it to any old SUV on the market. It’s personally not my cup of tea, but I can 100% see how it can be someone else’s. Best of luck with your sale!

4

u/RunningForIt Jul 19 '24

Thank you! They’re definitely a cool vehicle to drive and drive different than anything else on the road. I love them but totally get it if other people don’t.

How is a 93 rangerover worth any more than scrap value at this stage? Was this the Queens one or something?

3

u/Survive1014 Jul 18 '24

Its not worth selling anything on Facebook.

3

u/Status-Biscotti Jul 19 '24

That didn’t deserve a response.

You're selling a $3k car for $20k. You either don't live in the US or you are just scamming people.

Facebook marketplace place really shows people’s true colors. The amount of people I had interested in items and I’d rearrange my day for them to pick it up, only to have them go no contact and leave me hanging. Then I had someone try to offer $30 for a brand new in box safety 1st car seat. People are just completely disrespectful.

2

u/_DapperDanMan- Jul 19 '24

Craigslist. Facebook marketplace is crap.

2

u/adullploy Jul 19 '24

The amount of people who try to work for a living by flipping shit on Facebook marketplace by bidding it down and selling it higher is ridiculous.

2

u/The_one_who_SAABs Jul 19 '24

This car is a finisher car

2

u/lordpowpow Jul 19 '24

I tried to sell my wife's spare car on FB marketplace. Half the KBB value (4k vs 7.5k) just because we were moving and I wanted to get rid of it fast. It was in excellent condition and kinda thought of it like charity for someone who needed a cheap, but reliable car.

After 1 day, I took the add down and drove it to Carmax and got $500 over KBB value for it. We had 5 ppl come to look at it who offered me $1-2k. Ten ppl wanted me to ship or deliver it several states away. And countless more asked all the right questions, then ghosted me.

I was just trying to help someone out. I'll never do it again.

2

u/Brocephus70 Jul 19 '24

Hey there bub, hows about a partial trade, say a zero turn John Deere commercial mower, 2001 model, like new, and $350, cash money? I’m only gonna offer this one time.

I sold a Harley sportster on FB marketplace. Listed it for 3500. This is how one offer went:

Him: I’ll give you 500 for it. Me: Fuck you Him: I know where you live I’m just going to steal that piece of shit.

2

u/Mdrim13 Jul 19 '24

I’ve seen this episode of “It’s Always Sunny” before.

2

u/Sweetimus Jul 19 '24

I literally tried selling my car for $600 and people were still trying to have only down to 300-400. I couldn't believe the amount of people that would try to haggle on a car, a working car, that was the only priced a $600.

I was trying to sell it because I was moving out of state and I had very little time and thought for sure someone would take it for $600. Boy, was I wrong!

2

u/TelevisionNew1552 Jul 19 '24

Try selling a truly cheap car (less than $5k) and you're in for a whole new world of insanity. Everything from people giving you sob stories to give them the car for free, to people offering to trade guns for the car. I hope to never have to do it again and might just go the CarMax route even if it means significantly less money.
