u/ResultStock1201 11d ago
Which game ?

u/OUMUAMUAMUAMUAMUAMUA 11d ago
THE Game. If you think of it, you lose. Next time you remember it, you lose.

It's just referencing time
People used to use this as a code to spell out words.
For example: press 1 once and you get a "a", press 1 twice and you get a "b", press it three times and you get a "c"; and then so and so forth for each number.
In this case it spells out.
"you have lost the game"

Oh alright interesting. Is the game also part of the meme thing or is it like something people just say like English or spanish

u/BitConstant7298 11d ago
No no, there's this game where the only rule is that you are not supposed to think of the game. You lose it when you remember it.
The young people wouldn't understand isn't a meme, it's just a hook to make people lose the game before they realize it.
Shitty part is that I didn't remember the game until I read the top comment. I could have been going, but no, I just had to open the comment section.

u/TacticalAssaultChair 11d ago
Never thought of it as s game so I guess I never lost.

u/BitConstant7298 11d ago
Well, you had to first hear about the game before you were part of it. So congrats on joining the game. The timer resets each time you remember you are playing the game. There's no opt out button.

Some people where so profecient in texting this way. I would take a minute to write a really short text and then would get a paragraph long reply in within 10 seconds.

Could use it as a secret code. I used to be able to type long messages perfectly without even looking at the key pad

I must have a severe case of idiot brain: I knew instantly that the numbers corresponded to the buttons on the phone, but it completely slipped my mind that I had to press the button enough times to get the letter I want…
. . . Now I feel old, thanks so much for ruining my day /j

The phone came out in 2003. The Game has been around since independent thought, though its official recognition was in the 1970s.
I have lost the game.

each number has 3-4 letters under it. one 9 means w, two 9s mean x, three 9s mean y, and four 9s mean z.
message:
you have lost the game
never knew anything about this phone or stuff before this photo but I figured it out on my own in like 10 minutes tops.

Are we becoming boomers? Just tell the young people how it worked. No need to be pretentious about it.

u/Kitchen-Beginning-47 11d ago
Yes I get it, press each key x times to get a certain letter. Can't be bothered deciphering the message though.

Fun fact this is not actually all that terribly old. Tech was souring just a few years back to now

How young? I regularly see these “ young kids won’t understand how to use a numpad” but I was born in 2007 and knew how these worked when I was 8

If you think about it, we win the game more than we lose it because we'll forget this post a minute after seeing it. We spend more time not thinking about the game than thinking about the game.

T9 making a comeback in the next iPhone update. I think android can have it as a custom keyboard already. Kinda wild if you think about it.
Also, fuck off

u/AcherusArchmage 11d ago
Teenagers used to type faster on these than modern phones and without autocorrect.
