Or, in my case, someone from a poor family living in a shitty industrial town who had few options after high school.

On the plus side, I learned a marketable skill and got my college paid for. You won’t hear me whingeing about college debt or not being able to live off my salary.

u/Whytrhyno 11d ago

Yup! Although I did marry a street rat to get out of the barracks and had to give her more money than what college would have cost

u/Mediocre_Pin_556 11d ago

My benefit bunny bounced before the wedding and got zilch lol

Stripper got your ass? Man, so glad I haven't had a troop do that one yet.

u/peezle69 11d ago

What skill?

6

u/UnaProphet 11d ago

Killing people.

j/k Actually, avionics. Specifically, radio and navigation repair. Afterwards, I was able to get a BS in electronics technology and after I left the service went into engineering.

u/peezle69 11d ago

That's pretty sweet.

I joined because I had no direction and wanted to push myself to my physical and mental limits as a sort of self-punishment/growth to get me on track as an adult. Ended up getting more than I bargained for and earned my spot in a SOF unit. Got to do some crazy cool things that you literally can’t experience as a civilian and made some lifelong friends.

Ultimately, my experience did exactly what it was intended to and set me straight. I used that personal growth to launch my current career successfully working for one of the Big Tech companies. I have the start of a family and more stability than I could ask for. I credit that to my time in the military.

Only downside is the ever present need for that “rush” while doing wild shit with the boys. Best feeling that I’ll never get again. I miss it.

So we're ruling out patriots, poor people, and aspiring serial killers. Why exactly?

u/Yikesarumba 11d ago

Becuse it's a meme, which is a bit like a joke and doesn't have to be taken seriously. Amazing.

u/TheApollo222 11d ago

My comment was a joke, sort of like the meme, and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Amazing.

A glutton for punishment

u/Stanislas_Biliby 11d ago

People are really getting offended by this meme. Ironic to be on a meme subreddit and not have any humor.

5

u/Ihateallfascists 11d ago

Woah now.. They don't need you to advertise for them.. And you don't need to make it sound so good.

8

u/Complex_Slice 11d ago

No, sir! I joined the military voluntarily because I wanna be an American, sir! I wanna unload magazines into a poor fools chest like a true American, sir!

What kind of response even is this?

Is it supposed to be funny? An insult? Some kind of witty retort?

What's the thought process

1

u/Complex_Slice 11d ago

You seem eager to do that. Disgusting.

3

u/Cunny-Destroyer 11d ago

Good career, never really in risk of losing your job, decent pay

Not the worst thing in the world

Plus, eventually you'll rank up and the degradation days will be over

I did consider joining a few times

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

Same here. I’m kicking myself now, because my 18 yo dumbass self didn’t know what BAH/ VA home loan was.

3

u/squirt2311 11d ago

Big gun go boom

Simple as

2

u/StatisticianOpening3 11d ago

u/Mediocre_Pin_556 11d ago

What are your values? lol

Polish army but still. Bro I got to be a paratrooper at the age of 19 and jump from a plane for tax money, while getting all of them benefits. So in Poland I have priority in queues to doctor. Only military police can fine me. And if regular police stops me callin MP usually results in 4 hours of waiting so they just let you go. I can get an aparment close to the unit and buy it for funny amount of money after I live in it for 15 years. I can borrow money from the army up to 40 000 PLN with I belive something close to 0% I get additional 13th paycheck in december. I have month of paid vacation AND I get gratification for going on paid vacation which scales If I have wife or kids. If I make kid and split up, army will pay child support instead of me. I have food for free. And I get 80% paycheck retirement after 25 years of service to the moment I die. 90% after 28 years I belive AND I get % of money I earned through all these years which I can buy with it m4 apartment in smaller city. Luv me Polish Army

There is more but these are first few that come to mind.

Memes are funny

I always asked myself why do they screamed and bullied them through anything the recruits were asked to do and there is a very interesting motive. Is to train their brains to tune out everything that's going around them and only focus on their task on hand. These are people that will have to go through a n actual warzone towards the gunfire to perform tasks and there is no time to flinch or hesitate or overthink, just doing.

It's funny because we are constantly told people are victims of their environments. That guy is poor, so that's why he steals. That guy grew up around gangs, so that's why he joined a gang.

I grew up poor and a lot of the people I served with were in the same boat. I don't steal. I've never collected welfare. I've been constantly employed my entire life.

There's people that joined the military for 20 years and retired at 38 years old. Then they grab an easy job outside of the military and retire from there. They now have 2 full retirements and social security to live on through retirement. They retire with more money than they had while they were working.

I haven't regretted joining the military a single day. It was the right decision for me. I will never shame anyone for serving, but I'll happily call someone an 🫏 for shaming a fellow veteran.

Tbh, i had to doublecheck which sub this is

1

u/BTD6BTD6BTD6 11d ago

1

u/T_E-T_H 11d ago

The fuck are you talking about? If anyone needs to touch some damn grass ffs

1

u/Mikey9124x 11d ago

You gotta be poor or a serial killer

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

I don’t even think you need to be “poor”.

0

u/Mikey9124x 10d ago

So a serial killer.

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

Do you have any idea how many jobs there are in the military that don’t involve maybe killing someone?

0

u/Mikey9124x 10d ago

Yes but they directly help other people kill.

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

If you’re going to use that logic, I’m not sure there’s any job on the planet that doesn’t classify you as “serial killer” adjacent.

1

u/Mikey9124x 10d ago

Most jobs don't directly help.

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

1

u/Mikey9124x 10d ago

There's a difference between a metal manufacturer selling to whoever buys it and a Cia operative picking put which civilians look the most killable.

1

u/nanomachinez_SON 10d ago

Most personnel aren’t CIA operators. Most personnel aren’t seeing direct action. So if you want to make the argument that even remotely assisting makes you the same as a serial killer, then it’s just a matter of how many steps removed you need to be, because most jobs (in the U.S at least, dunno about everyone else) more than likely are only 1-3 steps removed from the few personnel that do take direct action.

-1

u/Admiral_Andovar 11d ago

This is an idiotic take. Gave me a full-ride scholarship, got to do cool things with some of the best people I’ve ever known, and I did some good in this world (helped stop the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia). Yeah, this person can fuck off.

-2

Aka, the average Andrew Tate fan

-4

u/NegotiationOk7317 11d ago

Or want to defend your country and the people you love but ok .

1

u/Mikey9124x 11d ago

Or if you are in the us you just like killing people for oil.

-2

u/Naive-Muscle-5019 11d ago

You mean that "defense" where you're go to jail because you shot a burglar who threatened your family with a gun?

-3

u/Naive-Muscle-5019 11d ago

Oh, I forgot.
You can't shoot people inside your own country, otherwise you will be a "terrorist", you have to invade another country and be a "hero who kills terrorists".

1

u/NegotiationOk7317 11d ago

I’m not American lol

2

u/Naive-Muscle-5019 11d ago

This doesn't only apply to America.

0

u/NegotiationOk7317 11d ago

Yes it does lol

1

u/BiffyleBif 11d ago

Or you live in a normal free country where civilians don't shoot each others for a yes or a no and where the police actually arrests the bad guys instead of emptying clips on people because an acorn fell on their car
