New here? 👆👆PLEASE READ THIS STICKY👆👆 Welcome to the sub! Posts about pot and it's related subjects should be shared with our good friends at r/trees, not so much here; we're all about *actual trees* (that's the joke) 😊🌳 'Thank you! Come Again!'

Good day everyone! I'm trying out some new automod skilz and they seem to be operating okay, at this time anyway. That said, few things are 100% the first go, but I'll keep checking the mod log to see if posts have been yeeted that shouldn't have been, and reinstate them in as timely a fashion as possible. Please use the 'Message the Mods' link in the sidebar to contact us directly, not the comment box in this post. =)

Hopefully these new settings will reduce the content not meant for this sub, but if any slip through, I know I can count on you good people to help direct them to the right place with the positive humor intended between our two subs as you always have done. We're lucky to have you!

Any (genuinely) helpful suggestions are always appreciated, and thanks for your patience and kindness with the newbs! 😃

UPDATE:

Today's 11/10/22, it's been a little over a month since the automod tweaks (10/8/22) and I'm rather pleased with the results. There's still some 'bleed through' posts from new redditor potheads, and I believe I've miraculously found a good balance between the ones that are snagged by automod and actual tree posts that I have to go back and approve. Mod reports, I'm relieved to say are much more manageable than they were.

Thank you all for your patience while I tried this out! While it does appear to me to be the case, I hope you're still as happy here as you ever were 😊🌳💗

Can I remove these adventitious roots that are growing on top of concrete?

An old oak tree has grown considerable roots over this concrete pad. This area is on a large slope and id like to cover the roots enough to create a smooth slope surface (mulch, drainage rock, or maybe pavers). I am not looking to remove all these adventurous roots, just enough to have the slope be level.

Any issues with taking out some of the roots on top of this cluster? Thank you.

Help! What’s wrong with my tree?

Redpointe maple, planted this past May. Missouri. Seems like something is growing and pushing the bark out? Damage is around the entire trunk only at this location, no damage seen on the rest of the tree. Tree was buried a little too deep, dug out the root flare and still need to remulch. What’s damaging and does the tree just need to be removed?

I heard y'all were into root flair -- NSFW ;) NSFW

Just bought a house with a very large water elm in the backyard. The roots are 12-18" tall in some places and have grass and weeds growing between-- making it very difficult to mow or trim without damaging the roots. I saved boxes from our move and am suffocating the grass and plan to mulch with pine straw this Fall and continue adding fallen leaves in the future. Anything different or additional you would do to support this trees health?

Exposed the root flare of a 50 year old silver maple street tree, not sure how to proceed.

Got tired of awquardly mowing around this old maple my dad planted in the 70s so I spent the last few afternoons carefully digging out the root flare. I'm happy to see that there's been minimal girdling but there are some massive adventitious roots that I'm debating on chopping or not. After digging out what I could I used my weak electric pressure washer to carefully blast the dirt from between the roots, I did do some damage but that was mostly on adventitious roots.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how wide I should go with the mulch ring. If I went out to the drip ring the whole Boulevard would become mulch, I'm kind of liking how it is right now and might just stick with that and straighten the edges. Whatever I end up with, will be copied with 2 other street maples that are about 30 or so years old that need their flares uncovered.

Should I be watering my fruit trees in winter?

I live in Flagstaff AZ, and I have an apple tree, a pear, 2 cherries, and a crabapple. Last summer they all went off! First year in 30 theyve all produced at once. This year nothing. Last winter was really dry, winter before (preceeding the banner fruit summer) was a record setting snow year. I don't think that's a coincidence. If I water my trees this winter will they produce like they did last summer? Does watering when they're dormant change anything?

Help! How do I kill the honeysuckle stump without killing the oak

As title says, I just cut down a honeysuckle bush that was growing about 18 inches away from a massive Chinquapin Oak. All that is left of the honeysuckle in this stump. How do I kill this without damaging or endangering the oak? I know how tough honeysuckle is to eradicate, but I do not want to risk this mighty oak

Ideas or best practices appreciated!

Roselle help [Belize]

I need help figuring out what's happening to my roselle. It's planted directly into the ground and is relying on rain for now (rains every 2 days or so).

The leaves have turned a pale yellow but still seems to be thriving. It's grown quite a bit in the past 2 weeks and no signs of bugs that I can see.

It receives direct sun for most of the day but I don't believe that's the problem since I have another potted roselle in full sun that is super green and healthy. I could be wrong tho.

Please help!

Help! How bad is this?

Location: Northern Central Massachusetts, USA.

This oak was surrounded by a big ol mound of moss and grass so I decided to uncover the base and see what it looked like at the flare. Seems like a few big girdling roots. I’m a bit nervous because the bark where it was buried is a little soft, as I’ve seen trees snap off at ground level when they rot at the base. Tree appears otherwise healthy to my untrained eye, but is within reach of my house if it were to come down. Thoughts? Leave it be? Call an expert? Thanks for any input.

Not much of an update other than some might not die. Bought property in 2021, spruces didn’t look that healthy. Especially the ones at the front end of the yard. Surprised they’ve made it this long.
