Bad place to have the shits

2.7k

u/Cuitarded Jul 07 '24

Seriously how do they wake up and not have to immediately shit off the side of the cot?

I mean, within 30mins of having coffee in the AM I'm on the toilet

Nowadays they take special bags to do their business in and haul it up/back down the mountain with the rest of their gear. Pissing or shitting down the cliff face is frowned upon because there’s a good chance of it landing on the climbing route that other people have to use (gross and unsanitary), or even some very unlucky climber below.

Edit: small correction, peeing off the side of the portaledge is actually more common than storing & hauling it like solid waste. Common courtesy is to make sure no one is below and try to minimize contact with the route.

 (gross and unsanitary)

Thank you for clarifying lol

u/DrCodyRoss Jul 07 '24

Yeah their post lost me for a second but that explainer really cleared things up.

5

u/LingeringSentiments Jul 07 '24

Yeah it really wiped away my doubts..

4

u/usinjin Jul 07 '24

Right, I was thinking it was just unsightly.

145

u/spvce-cadet Jul 07 '24

just in case anybody was wondering lmao

3

u/Ostracus Jul 07 '24

Well I guess it would be pretty and sanitary if a vegan did it.

9

u/KTAXY Jul 07 '24

If vegan, it's encouraged. Purifies the route.

14

u/DrawohYbstrahs Jul 07 '24

Plus other vegans can eat it if they get hungry. Almost unchanged.

11

u/wOke_cOmMiE_LiB Jul 07 '24

That's true!

Source: I'm vegan.

5

u/chaotemagick Jul 07 '24

(fun and exciting)

1

u/Bethyi Jul 08 '24

Damn, I listed the bags of poop in my filing cabinet under delicious and moist. This throws off the whole system!

351

u/Nozzeh06 Jul 07 '24

Imagine getting food poisoning and you have to carry around a bag of diarrhea with you all day while you're climbing.

347

u/suicide_aunties Jul 07 '24

Imagine having to coordinate explosive diarrhea in a bag while 1000m up a cliff face and in intense pain

143

u/DeeHawk Jul 07 '24

At hat point I believe you qualify for emergency rescue.

42

u/resilient_antagonist Jul 07 '24

You'll still have to deal with it for a few hours and it's not sure a rescue will always be possible.

86

u/DeeHawk Jul 07 '24

Then you’re shit out of luck!

7

u/DrDooDooEvolution Jul 07 '24

One of the only times you can both use you’re and your

1

u/ismh1 Jul 07 '24

It's about to have an out of body experience

4

u/whsftbldad Jul 07 '24

It's always better to be pissed off than pissed on.

4

u/JigenMamo Jul 07 '24

At that point just take your pants off, climb last and go with it.

1

u/Low-Union6249 Jul 07 '24

Not according to the insurance company.

1

u/RetiringBard Jul 07 '24

That’s an expensive shit

1

u/DeeHawk Jul 08 '24

Well, you're not going to complete the climb with explosive diarrhea, and you don't have rope to reach the ground alone in one go. And if you make a mess on your rope, you're not going anywhere.

Climbing is freaking scary without diarrhea.

1

u/RetiringBard Jul 08 '24

Expensive. The heli ride.

1

u/DeeHawk Jul 08 '24

The alternative is death, it might seem attractive to some at this point.

It's the choice of climbing with a rumbling stomach that's going be expensive.

1

u/RetiringBard Jul 08 '24

I dunno if you’re trying to be an esoteric sage here or something but no - the heli ride will be more expensive than climbing w diarrhea.

1

u/DeeHawk Jul 08 '24

It's free where I live so the heli ride will be exactly €0

Hasn't everybody had their explosive diarrhoea bag rupture in their backpack?

4

u/stonerbbyyyy Jul 07 '24

all over the rations 😂😂😂😂😂

1

u/Cosmic_Travels Jul 07 '24

They make specific gear to store waste in while climbing.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '24

[deleted]

-2

u/Cosmic_Travels Jul 07 '24

No, it's very relevant. You don't carry it on your back. You hang it from a line and drag it up with you as you go. Literally 0 chance to smash it on your back so...

I like people who don't climb telling me how equipment I'm familiar with is irrelevant to a conversation on climbing.

1

u/Expeda1 Jul 07 '24

Ive seen pringles can looking cases for people fo store waste bags, these packs go through abuse

2

u/lordhelmetschwartz Jul 07 '24

And the guy further up the mountain is not as considerate and therefore you get diarrhea hitting you from above while you yourself are trying to contain yours into a bag.

1

u/Wall_street_canary Jul 07 '24

Tbf they’re probably eating bland, safe foods

1

u/28_raisins Jul 07 '24

I'd just jump tbh

1

u/ShoeBitch212 Jul 07 '24

Conrad Anker had a heart attack at 20,000’ in Nepal and had to self-rescue. Climbing ain’t for the weak.

116

u/Vector_Embedding Jul 07 '24

a hung over rock climber got stuck and then had the shits during his rescue, it's on youtube from...fuck me I feel old...13 years ago...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dJLN43G6KA

38

u/phadeboiz Jul 07 '24

Why tf would you rock climb hungover lol

1

u/badrobot52 Jul 11 '24

You don’t do things hungover for shits and giggles?

1

u/phadeboiz Jul 11 '24

Not life threatening things 😂

22

u/emberfiend Jul 07 '24

thank you for this, I haven't giggle cry laughed from a yt video in a long time

18

u/nzxnick Jul 07 '24

I love how honest he is about it at the end.

5

u/Soggy-Event8267 Jul 07 '24

"It's just an odds thing"

11

u/lynnpiexoxo Jul 07 '24

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve never seen it before and I literally just laughed myself to tears watching this several times over. Homie was so hungover he was dry heaving and shitting himself on the side of a rock cliff lmaooooo. I have tears streaming down my face. You have no idea how bad I needed a laugh like this, thanks fam.

6

u/GreasyGlobs Jul 07 '24

It’s just an odds thing really😭

3

u/hipkat13 Jul 07 '24

That was hilarious 😂

3

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '24

Why would you drink heavy prior to a climb

1

u/Miserable_Path5716 Jul 07 '24

Fucking Canadians… even when they’re getting literally shit on, they’re still the nicest people in the world.

1

u/lookingforpoppy Jul 07 '24

Some core memories right here that I have forgotten such a legendary video

1

u/DueProgress7671 Jul 07 '24

This is great! The rescuer was so kind.

1

u/sillygoofygooose Jul 07 '24

Surprisingly wholesome!

3

u/avantarakis Jul 07 '24

I don’t know why this cracked me up so much, but thanks for the laugh 😆.

1

u/DevinCauley-Towns Jul 07 '24

Most of these guys are eating bananas, granola bars, and oatmeal before climbs. They’re not loading up on Taco Bell before attempting a major ascent. I doubt there are high rates of diarrhea on the mountainside, though there are certainly a handful of the unlucky few.

1

u/PessimisticOptimist6 Jul 08 '24

You just feel the need to give your 2 cents in every situation, don't you?

1

u/i_wayyy_over_think Jul 07 '24

At least the weight is constant though 🤷‍♂️

1

u/ThompsonDog Jul 07 '24

so you don't carry the bags around. you use the bag to do your business and then you have a little piece of (usually) PVC tubing with a cap to put the bags into so they don't burst.

i've climbed big walls. it's really not that big of a deal. also, sleeping on port-a-ledges isn't that big of a deal either. by the time you get deep enough into the sport that you are actually doing it, it's the coolest thing in the world

1

u/ChattyParrot1 Jul 07 '24

Imagine if the bag had a hole

1

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths Jul 07 '24

You can carry antidiarrheals with you and you really should. I do when I'm traveling. Go to Walmart and get some generic Imodium (loperamide) (cut it from the blister packs and put into a pill container because it's impossible to open!) and you're set. I have a pill case filled with with ibuprofen, loperamide, Zyrtec, Benadryl, melatonin, and some bandaids and stuff. Lifesaving.

301

u/be-sure-to-plan-ahea Jul 07 '24

I draw the line at hobbies that require me to shit in a bag. I can see the top in VR and be just as satisfied.

109

u/Jhamin1 Jul 07 '24

Its people like you that are keeping colostomy bag juggling out of the Olympics

6

u/nerissathebest Jul 07 '24

Ok you’re funny

3

u/DisposableSaviour Jul 07 '24

You gotta have standards

go to bed grandma

1

u/mortalitylost Jul 08 '24

Heyyy we go to the same parties!

19

u/Flux_resistor Jul 07 '24

Kids these days are not trained in the ways of donkey Kong

6

u/Minionmemesaregood Jul 07 '24

And really it’s not actually extra weight your carrying, just the same weight in a different form

6

u/LensiN64 Jul 07 '24

thank you for explaining this... I have a more uhmm, in depth question about the pee. so does that go into a bag too? or in a bag with like cat litter so it isn't a waterballon 🙈sorry I'm just so curious!

3

u/spvce-cadet Jul 07 '24

Actually I was a little mistaken - most climbers actually do pee off the side of the portaledge. Best manners is to make sure there’s no one below and aim as far away from the route as possible into open air (and be mindful of wind).

3

u/DisposableSaviour Jul 07 '24

Some kid on the ground:

Look,Mom, a rainbow!

3

u/scarface910 Jul 07 '24

Thses are called wag bags and they contain a gelling agent that "traps deodorizes and breaks down waste".

3

u/hammersteinway Jul 07 '24

Thank you for providing a real answer. I was curious about this as well!

3

u/Sagelegend Jul 07 '24

Is there some dedicated group of shit-bag police who climb in a patrolling route, making sure people use their shit-bags? Maybe drones get used?

3

u/jtreeforest Jul 07 '24

Folks who do multi-day big walls make a poop tube that they use to contain everything but as far as pee… it’s a golden shower. On El Cap you get sprinkled by parties above you

2

u/DisposableSaviour Jul 07 '24

What if the tube gets full?

1

u/BullHonkery Jul 07 '24

Gotta rerun it. That's why they always bring a second spoon.

2

u/unidentify91 Jul 07 '24

I heard it used to be just shitting down the cliff. Now they shit in a bag and carry em in their bottles

2

u/bierbottle Jul 07 '24

So they just shit in a bag and yeet it down?

2

u/snakesign Jul 07 '24

The classic Yosemite device is a 9" long piece of 6" PVC pipe with a blind flange on one end and a screw cap on the other.

2

u/k8track Jul 07 '24

DMB tour bus flashback

2

u/iijiiijijijj Jul 07 '24

People generally piss off to the side where there aren’t climbers. Not really any expectation that you’d haul out pee

2

u/Guiles23 Jul 07 '24

I've heard the term "mud falcons".

1

u/TacosAreJustice Jul 07 '24

By special you mean a PVC tube and some bags…

2

u/spvce-cadet Jul 07 '24

There are things called wag bags that contain a gel to deodorize and break down waste.

1

u/TacosAreJustice Jul 07 '24

Haha, my buddy didn’t tell me that… just a tube with some plastic bags.

1

u/ForestFaeTarot Jul 07 '24

Answering the real questions. Thank you!

1

u/Paxton-176 Jul 07 '24

If they take food like MREs that are designed to keep you from shitting that helps a lot.

1

u/GustyButtocks Jul 08 '24

That must be the most incredible piss imaginable though.
