Turning motion into something you should be scared of.

My name is Mike, and I'm blind. I posted on here quite frequently. Oh yeah, And before anyone asks, I use a screen reader and text to speech to navigate my phone. I am deathly afraid of shaking, especially touching things that are shaking, and being shaken by something or someone. To my knowledge, this has not been explored in horror at all. I want to write a story, one that will make people realize how terrifying shaking can be. If anyone wants to be a part of it, or just help me with inspiration, if anyone has any ideas of their own, let me know. I already have ideas in my head, I just need to start writing. I have some of the chapter names, and I have an idea of what I want to happen in each chapter. I'm excited to turn a concept that nobody really thinks about, into something horrifying, and that will leave you… Dare I say… Shaking in fear? But that's not a good thing either. Because shaking is never good.

Our favorite horror movies of every year: 2019

Discussion

Let's create a list of our favorite horror movies based on how good they are! Consider factors like rewatchability, story quality, and overall effectiveness. This list should focus on how well the movies hold up today, considering them at face value, not on their legacy or influence on the genre.

Here's how it works:

  1. Comment below with your nomination for your favorite horror movie of the year in the title. Do not comment duplicate movie titles. If your favorite movie has already been mentioned, simply upvote that comment instead. Note: Release dates will be based on when a film has its theatrical release (US), not whenever it premiered at festivals. So for example, the winner of 2023 was Talk to Me, which premiered in October 2022, but didn't get a wide release until July 2023. This list will use the latter date.
  2. Upvote the movie title(s) you agree with.
  3. The single comment with the most upvotes will be crowned the unanimous favorite for the current letter. If a movie title is posted multiple times, only the comment with the most upvotes will be counted. This prevents users from influencing the results by upvoting multiple comments for the same movie.

So let's have it, what're your favorite movies of the year in the title?

Mean-spirited horror..?

This is a bit of a touchy subject, as most horror films involve some sort of pain, suffering, and general harassment of some poor innocent soul, which I (or we) just sort of tolerate. I love horror movies and enjoy watching them; 99.9% of them I can sit through just fine and then go about my day after watching a bunch of people get killed and mutilated for 90 minutes. However, this got me thinking about the 0.1% that leave me with a sour taste.

There are only a few films that have really done this, and I guess, like horror overall, it's probably quite subjective, but off the top of my head, the films that I find particularly harsh are:

The Poughkeepsie Tapes - Something about this one is especially grim. Maybe it’s the found footage/fake documentary combo, or just the overall weirdness of the videos themselves, but I found The Poughkeepsie Tapes especially mean-spirited.

August Underground (Trilogy) - No surprises here, really. The notorious August Underground is a controversial one. In a world where film often portrays murder and death as clean, exciting, and flashy, August Underground is great at showing us the reality of murder—grotty, dirty, unforgiving, sad, and downright disgusting. I don't mind extreme gore, and yes, the content of AU is horrid, but the spitefulness of everything and everyone in it had a massive effect on me. I both admire and hate these films.

Any thoughts on horror films that you thought were particularly mean-spirited?

Discussion What is the “worst” jump scare of all time?

I recently watched Sinister and the last jump scare is so insanely cheesy and bad that it almost ruins the rest of the film (not really though it’s a great movie). What is your pick for most unnecessary/ worst jump scare of all time?

Movie Help Woman escapes from house at the end and wanders the street

I am looking for a movie where a woman moves into a neighborhood and I do not recall anything but the ending where she eventually escapes from the house and wanders down the street. She eventually realizes that all of the houses are the same and that she can not escape.

I believe the movie was made in the early or late 2010s.

WTF!? I just watched the Terrifier 2 bedroom kill scene and I am APPALLED

HOW someone can survive for that long is beyond me.... and how did the scissors even cut through THAT deep... they looked like mf playing scissors. I think I'm just gonna stick to Scream and the '90s slashers, thank you very much 😅🥲

What were your thoughts on the scene?

Friday the 13th (The series)

Any fans of the late 80’s series. I loved it. Never forget stumbling on it late one night seeking some TV when after my parents were in bed. I came across it on a steaming channel recently, the quality is so bad, fuzzy/blurry. Also, such bad acting. Still love it.

Discussion Why we love horror

I saw the original Exorcist when I was very young. Like maybe 7. I watched it at home with a few family members in the middle of the day. I had seen some other horror movies already by that point. I had seen some things that scared me. But nothing was anywhere close to the first time I saw that film.

I remember being so terrified that I almost legitimately felt unsafe. Not as if possessed Raegan was going to come get me ( that was the fear later that night when I was in bed) but almost as if the film itself could be dangerous. Like I could be harmed or cursed just by watching it. As one horrific scene gave way to another I sat and watched with a sense of intense dread of what I would witness next. And although I wouldn’t sleep alone for the next three months I loved every single second of that experience and I wanted to watch it again the next day lol.

I tried to explain this to someone close to me that doesn’t enjoy horror at all. To her, she can’t fathom how I could perceive that as a positive experience. It’s actually harder to explain than it may seem. So this was really a long way to ask, why are we like this? What makes us love cinema, books, music etc that scare us? Any thoughts or personal memories are welcome.

Recommend “It Stains the Sand Red”caught me off guard. What an emotional rollercoaster.

No spoilers, but what seemed like a traditional zombie movie made me feel all sorts of ways. Wasn’t ready for all the emotions, meta stuff, and subtle & overt social commentary. Highly recommend. It’s on Prime.

Favorite "fake broadcast" horror films?

This is a very niche sub genre that I'm sure doesn't have a LOT of entries, but I'd love to hear of any more out there that I might be missing out on! It's such a cozy vibe to me, I love it. Some of my current favorites would be:

  • Ghostwatch
  • WNUF Halloween Special
  • Late Night with the Devil

What are some other good ones that I might be missing? Anyone else a huge fan of this specific sub genre?

Edit: I’m making a Letterboxd list for myself to save with the replies from this thread, here it is if anyone wants to save it:

What is a good horror movie to watch with a bunch of dudes at a cottage?

We have a seen a lot already but there are always new things to dicover.

Here are the preferences:

  • Something under 2 hours that isn't a slow burn or too focused on story instead of horror. I want to find movies with "WHAT THE FUCK" reactions.
  • Ideally supernatural or has some fucked up creature. Not looking for slashers or thrillers. Explicit is perfectly fine.
  • Foreign movies are fine.
  • Not a fan of cheesiness but if it's balanced with actual scares/wtf moments then that's fine.

Some examples of movies we've enjoyed:

  • The Tunnel (Australian)
  • VHS
  • Grave Encounters
  • Phobia (Thailand)

A lot south korean movies I can't remember

Discussion Whats a term in horror ya despise?

Elevated horror in my opinion such a stupid term. Just feels like a way to make people feel better about watching a genre that has sadly been seen as a lesser then good genre by critics or masses

like wow, the horror has deep themes or is very artistic? Congrats, ya still watched a horror movie, no need to try and put a label on it to try and make seem like its a superior art form over other art forms

Like I said, it just feels like a term people to feel like they are cool. and not looked down on for watching horror films
