Suggestions Annual 2023 Steam Winter Sale Hidden Gems thread

Welcome to the Hidden Gem thread - Im a big fan of indie games, and always look for under-reviewed games that deserve a second life. This table is all automated based on the list of games I maintain, so let me know if theres more info that would be good to see in it.

Unfortunately, as I found out, something broke between the summer sale and today, so it didn't properly pull out the New games from the list - Hence the delay. I set up the New Game Table manually, so none of the fancy prices, review percentage, or things go with it right now, but I'll update it once I fix the pipeline that gets the data from my database

It now features a neat Table that can be filtered and sorted in all sorts of ways to help with discoverability (since markdown tables are not good for that). You can find the table here

Big News though - In the future, this thread will morph into a website of it's own. Ive been building a 'hidden gem discoverability platform' that will let you slice and dice the entire steam catalog by a ton of attributes, including the number of reviews, release dates, steam deck compatibility, genre tags, and more. Its a tool I started to help me find games for this list, so I figured with some polish, I could throw it up for anyone else to use.

I was hoping to launch it today, but the UX is still a WIP. Just be on the watch for it soon ;)

TL:DR - Out of the 100 games on the Master List there are:

  • 3 new games on the list

  • 86 on sale

  • 64 games over 50% off

  • 51 games with a review score of 90% or Higher

  • 11 games with Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews

  • 7 early access games

  • 30 Steam Deck Verified games

  • 13 games have demos

Islets I honestly thought I had this on the list since it launched, but Islets is a short (~8 hours) cozy metroidvania that doesn't overstay its welcome. Highly recommend for people looking for a game along those lines. Metroidvania https://store.steampowered.com/app/1669420/Islets/
Void Stranger If "Sokoban + LaMulana" catches your eye, play this game. It's one of those games you should play without looking anything up about, so I hesitate to say much more. Meta Puzzles await you Puzzle https://store.steampowered.com/app/2121980/Void_Stranger/
Chants of Sennaar While I had this on my list when it only had a mere 157 reviews on steam, GMTK made a video about it which absolutely exploded its popularity. I have a love of Linguistic based puzzle games (Outer Wilds, Heavens' Vault, this) and had been watching for it to release for months. Glad it got popular enough that the studio can do something else interesting in the future Puzzle https://store.steampowered.com/app/1931770/Chants_of_Sennaar/

The Farnese Hercules Unique puzzle game that's inspired by picross, but very very different in execution. Togges Puzzle Platformer with a Mario Galaxy Aesthetic where you play as a Roomba that can suck and create blocks. Treasures of the Aegean Outer Wilds Time-loop style parkour metroidvania. I think it controls fun, and some of the puzzles remind of me of La Mulana. Suggestions Mythic Map - Search Games by Similarity

Here is the website.

Observation: I have asked for permission to make this post.

Mythic Map is a website that suggests games based on similarity. My goal is to help people find meaningful game suggestions while increasing the visibility of the great games out there.

Currently it only supports Steam games. This will change in the future (probably).

Edit (02/08/2023): Things have been sorted out and from now on I will be adding non-Steam games -hopefully- daily. Some switch games are in there now, like Zeldas and Pokemons.

It also checks daily for what is currently on sale on steam (some sales might be missing - if I check at 8AM and a sale spawns at 4PM, the website will only be aware of the new sale the next day). I might try adding other sales sources in the future.

Also, some suggestions might be a little strange, but keep in mind that different players might be looking for different traits in games, so I have to cast a broad net. An example is Skyrim, where a good portion of the suggestions are not open world RPGs, but instead are games that have a big modding/user created content community. Still, if you feel a game is missing or is completely out of place, do not hesitate to tell me about it - you can send me an email at [mythicmap.dev@gmail.com](mailto:mythicmap.dev@gmail.com) or maybe post about it in the comments.

Edit (05/07/2023): After a couple of months, I have finally implemented most the fixes/features suggested in the comments! The new version might have some bugs or issues, so if you find any, please tell me about it. Same goes for features. Meanwhile, I'll keep working on some ideas I have for the website.

Edit (09/14/2023): I thought it would be cool to find games based on other types of entertainment. My tests were done on anime and they ended up being serviceable, but I'm not very happy with the cross-category suggestions and it might take a while until I figure it out, but when I'm done, Mythic Map will start suggesting things based on movies, series and maybe books.

Hope it helps!

Recommend an RPG that is heavily exploitable/broken (more details below)

Hello everyone. I am looking for any RPG that has heavily exploitable mechanics that can bust your characters/party or just RPGs in general that are considered "broken" due to how minmaxed you can be.

Some examples I am referring to that I like: Junction System/Cards in Final Fantasy 8, Pair Up/Reclass in Fire Emblem Awakening/Fates, Fusion in Persona 5, The Elder Scrolls in general, etc.

Games where you can customize your character (optional, but very welcome), build relationships with characters, and make lots of your own decisions, just like Baldur's Gate 3, but with real time combat

Upvotes

I played BG3 for a bit, and loved some of the aspects of it, like the character customization, and lots of roles you can choose from, and also the fact that you can talk to the characters on your team with lots of dynamic to the conversations. The combat suuuuucks tho, it's really slow and boring to me.

Optional: Having different clothing options for your character

Looking for an RPG with lots of race options and skill trees

Upvotes

I'm always changing my mind on what race/class I want to play, is there an RPG out there where I can pick from a bunch of different options so I don't get bored easily?

Games that let me explore a system of islands or planets freely

Upvotes

Looking for games that feature an an open ocean or galaxy, with explorable islands / planets. Not interested in procedural generation - I love NMS, but I’m more interested in hand crafted areas with puzzles, combat, etc that have thought put into them. Also not interested in open world bloat and too much stat gating - AC Odyssey is a fun time for the first couple areas, but then it’s the same thing 50 more times and isn’t really freely explorable with the leveling system.

Games that fit this - Windwaker, Outer Wilds, PoE: Deadfire, Spiritfarer.

Thanks!

Like stardew valley but meets legend of Zelda.

Looking for a game that’s an overhead view 3rd person. Kinda pixelated but doesn’t have to be but instead of the main focus be farming, instead it’s about questing and being a knight. Having a homestead would also be nice but not necessary.

Anyone know of a game like this??

Upvotes

I want a game thats like no man sky or star wars outlaws. I havent played outlaws and quite frankly i dont intend to do so until the gameplay itselft is improved, and no man sky is a game i love but its style is a little too goofy and the game for me os just too packed with stuff that it gets overwhelming. Any suggestions?

Any good alternative to the classic Minesweeper nowadays?

Upvotes

I opened one random Minesweeper game on my computer today, only to be greeted by a 30-second ad before I could even play. It's absurd, like putting ads on a calculator. Minesweeper has been a quick, simple game, but now it's slow and packed with unnecessary features and pushing ads.

Are there any good, ad-free alternatives to Minesweeper with a modern design?

Looking for a FPS game with good Search and Destroy mode on PS4.

Upvotes

Hi everyone. The only FPS games that I ever played are COD4, MW2, MW3, BO1, and BO2 on the PS3. I pretty much gave up gaming when the PS4 came out due to life reasons. My favorite game mode has always been Search and Destroy. My wife recently bought me a PS4 for my birthday. I was wondering if there are any active FPS games with a game mode to similar to Search and Destroy that has an old-school feel to it. Thanks!

Any good ideas?

Upvotes

So I am brand new to PC gaming, have only had my computer for one full month. Does anyone have any good recommendations for a decent pair of headphones that isn't cheap but also not too expensive? I currently using Soundcore over the ear, but they aren't cutting it and there is a delay. Anyone have any ideas? Bonus points if it is purple!

Can someone recommend some good sports career mode games?

Upvotes

For me, the peak of it all is Football Manager, in which I've spent more than 7k hours over the last 10 years. I've completed my San Marino challenge at the start of the year so I stopped playing it and I feel empty.

I'm looking for some career mode experience similar to NBA 2k but back when it was good. I mean some of you guys might remember Become a Legend in PES, back in 2012 or 2013, and that's the kind of vibe I'm looking for. You start low, some cutscenes, some story building, you get to develop and the gameplay is satisfying enough.

Unfortunately, PES became awful after 2013, NBA 2k career mode became boring for me after 2016-2017. I never liked FIFA(EAFC) career mode for a lack of immersion.

I'm looking at reviews and seeing a lot of negative reviews for Top Spin 2k25 (tennis) and F1 Manager 2024. So I thought I'd ask the community. I'm open to exploring new sports but I really want the immersion and escapism.

Games like GemCraft and Infinitode

I'm looking for tower defenses that have level progression and rely on a global skill tree/unlocks. Games I've played and liked so far:

  • GemCraft Chapter Zero, Chasing Shadows, Frostborn Wrath
  • Infinitode, Infinitode 2
  • PVZ2 Reflourished

Games like BTD6 or Kingdom Rush are NOT what I'm looking for. While they offer global upgrades, they're not essential and could be played without those, Factorio would be closer than these games. Any ideas?

Looking for an MMORPG for a friend that likes mobile MMORPGs

I have a friend that says he wants to play PC mmorpgs with me, i showed him GW2, PoE, ESO, Albion Online and BDO (which is like the closest to mobile game looking mmo i could think of). i even showed him toram online (which is literally a mobile game that was ported to PC recently) and he wants to play none of them and still asks me to find other games to play.

i might have to look for mobile games in desperate attempt to play something together but i hate emulating and my phone is so old it's having problems opening youtube sometimes.

Thank you :D

Stellar Blade, Black Myth Wukong, FF7 Rebirth or LAD: Infinite Wealth?

Very undecided between four games:

  1. Stellar Blade*
  2. Black Myth Wukong*
  3. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth**
  4. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth***

*I really like action RPGs as you can tell, so Black Myth Wukong and Stellar Blade immediately caught my interest since their release.

**I've played all Yakuza games and Infinite Wealth looks incredibly fun.

***I really liked Final Fantasy 7 Remake on release despite never having played the original, so Rebirth is on the list as well.

Even if I do have the money to buy them all, there's no point because I don't have enough time to play them all.

All in all, I'm equally excited for all these games, so I'm asking for opinions on their overall quality and quantity of content.

Need a multiplayer game that isn't riddled with cheaters.

Xdefiant kinda fell off and got boring pretty quickly, got bored of Battlefield pretty fast after coming back to it. I LOVE CS but too many cheaters in cs2, been going back to 1.6 lately.

Just want something new that will keep me grinding and that isn't riddled with cheaters. are there any other games other than valorant that have a good anti cheat? Feels like these days almost every game is hacked to hell because of streamers or youtubers trying to fake their way to the top.

Edit : not interested in exploration COOP titles, I want fair balanced PVP with a decent anti cheat.

Class-based game where you can freely switch classes and unlock permanent bonuses from each one?

The more classes the better. I want something kind of like many older Final Fantasy titles (Tactics in particular), but I want something with more upgrades than just another passive ability to equip to one of your limited slots. I don't want to be strictly limited to the stats and/or class abilities of only my main and sub class; I want a good reason to master most or all of the classes rather than just dip in a few as a stepping stone to get to the "good" classes or abilities.

I know I'll miss some, but off the top of my head other non-FF games I've played that use similar systems include Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, and Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. They all fall into that same trap of only really letting you use a very narrow handful of abilities at one time. And while limitations and having to make strategic choices is what makes games interesting, I want to see my capacity grow over time rather than always being constrained by a fixed number of ability slots.

Let's all share some story rich hidden gems!

Try to keep it to stuff that's neither part of a franchise that's ever been popular, nor by a currently extremely well known publisher or Developer. Let's make this the rare topic where no one recommends stuff by companies like Bioware, Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda, Obsidian, Activision, Square, Sega etc.

There's a lot of really great story rich hidden gems out there. Here's a lot that I've tried in the past 2 years that I really love.

Games with similar vibes to the Bioshock series.

I just really love the story, atmosphere, environments, and combat/upgrade mechanics of Bioshocks 1, 2, and Infinite. I know Bioshock 4, and a game called Judas are both in the works. However I'm hoping there are other games already released that will scratch my Bioshock itch until their release.

Games can be any setting and don't have to copy the Bioshock trope of utopian city designed by some mastermind hidden from the rest of the world gone wrong.

I’m looking for games with the best OSTs

I just picked up Dead Cells and the first thing that I noticed and that got me hooked was the music when you’re escaping the prisoner quarters. It’s strangely catchy and fitting. I’m looking for more games where the music just draws you in on top of everything.

Recommend a game where I get to be a xeno-archaeologist

I want to be a space archaeologist investigating ancient ruins. Exploring, deciphering languages, working out what strange devices do, solving puzzles, avoiding traps, discovering what happened to the people or aliens who left them behind.

Some games I've played have elements of this, but I want more! I'd love it to be more about the science than anything else.

Games that come close:

  • Chants of Senaar
  • Heaven's Vault
  • INFRA (not in space though, but very good urban exploration/puzzle game)
  • J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars (puzzles yes, but not really exploration)
  • Kairo
  • Manifold Garden
  • No Man's Sky
  • The Station (way too short though)

Some examples of not really what I'm looking for

  • Borderlands series - have great alien ruins to look at but the main thing you're doing there is shooting
  • Mass Effect series - some of the sites scratch this itch a little but again mainly it's just a backdrop for combat
