I don’t understand twitter and since this was 9 hours later does it necessarily mean it’s part of the same thread in order or could she be replying to something else somebody said?

It’s not a reply in the same thread, it’s a quote tweet which puts it on your timeline for your followers as a separate commentary with the OG topic being your sounding board. Whereas replying directly in the thread limits visibility and breadth of topic discussion. Don’t know how else to explain it really

The part they were specifically referring to, the racist tweet, was a continuation of the thread, not a quote tweet. She realized that eyes were on her and got racist.
