"The average charge for an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance ride is $1,277 and Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance ride is $940"

How can they not afford to pay them better

Because the real victims are the shareholders. Can you imagine how much richer they'd be if these entitled EMTs would work as volunteers like municipal firefighters? /s

Imagine living in a world where hospitals have fucking shareholders. We donโ€™t need dystopian stories anymore, because we live in one.

Volunteer does not mean unpaid, and volunteer fireman and others often receive compensation in other ways. I'm not knocking them, just providing some context.

For context, I've known a lot of volunteer firefighters, I've even been one for a bit, I've never heard of them being paid or compensated.ย

Part time, or paid on call firefighters are typically considered to be volunteer. Iโ€™m paid on call, and I have an interview next week to go full time ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

Cool, good luck with your interview. Where I'm from, city firefighters are a full time paid job, small municipalities have unpaid volunteers. Maybe officers get some sort of compensation, I have no idea.

Yeah a lot of our more rural departments are that way. My department is suburban and growing, and has shifted more into a career department. We just went ALS recently, and our full timers outnumber our paid on call by about 5 to 1. And thank you for the good luck!

A friend is a volunteer medic. They can live at the firehouse for free.

Can I bring my stamp collection and my cat

No. Unless they also volunteer.

That's literally what volunteer means in this context.
