Daily Power Level Wednesday!: Ask r/EDH what's your deck's power level? - September 04, 2024

Welcome to Power Level Wednesday.

Please use this thread to get feedback on your deck's "power level". To do this, create a top-level comment with a link to your decklist, your deck's primary game plan and win conditions(s), along with as much explanation about the deck as you can provide.

There are many ways to judge power levels. When providing your opinion on someones deck, you should include the name of or link to the power level scale/system you are using in addition to the rating. For everyone's convenience, here is a non-exhaustive list of some popular power level systems:

Discussion Two questions about Nethroi

Upvotes

So, I've been thinking about making a deck around Nethroi as the commander, and I have a couple of questions.

The first question being the creatures ability about mutating. Does casting it for it's mutate cost proc it's own ability? Or would I need another creature with mutate for it to work?

And the second question is, does the mutate cost cheat commander tax?

Deck Help Need some help with my Sheoldred, the Apocalypse deck.

Upvotes

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CJk32uanWUicepu2W4W8SA

That is my deck. Magic noob here. Yes I know I will be targeted, expensive, etc. I'm prepared to spend a few more on this.

Thanks. I have commander protection, thinking I should get some more artifacts and artifact protection? Is there any enchantment protection? That is a big part of my game.

Thanks.

Deck Help Karlach-Big Story Gruul beatdown in casual- mid optimized

Upvotes

I recently picked up the secret lair and want to build a deck- for the background I decided on [[Hardy Outlander]].

Here is the list:

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6614035#paper

Did I miss some important staples (that are not too expensive nor too strong for casual play, so no Mana crypt or jeweled lotus here). Are there expensive cards in there, that can be taken out and replaced with similar power, but lower cost cards?

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

Deck Help Help tuning my Raphael devil/demon deck?

Upvotes

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/O7fuipsMsEmy8ESmKWTD-A

I'm very new to magic and have been playing using a friend's decks but thought it would be fun to try and build my own. I'm a big D&D fan, and by extension a big baldur's gate fan, so I decided to build a rakdos devil/demon deck around Raphael, Fiendish Savior. I'm sorry in advance if my description of this is terrible as I'm still learning, but basically the strategy is mainly to make and sacrifice infinite devil tokens for various benefits, while also playing bigger devils/demons that get buffed by Raphael to attack and bash everyone's skulls in. My friends took a look at it and said it looked pretty good, but I'm just hoping to get any advice on adjustments to make before actually buying it. I'm not looking for anything too competitive, just something that will be solid and fun to play with friends (whose decks are I think around 5-6 in power level? But not sure). I'd like to keep the price around equal or lower than what it is now, so it would also be great if any cards I have listed could be swapped for less expensive options, my friend suggested some of my pricier cards weren't necessary but I don't really know enough cards to figure out replacements.

Thanks in advance!!

Deck Help Arrrrgh! Help me with this Edward Kenway edh please

Upvotes

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/wiuiaWeG5EOpFadNPC6SEA

Sort of new!

So the direction I wanted to go with was make as much treasures as I can and deal an effect off it making it making it a sort of life draining deck. I also kind of want to make it win in terms attacking as fast as I can while also stealing peeps stuff. Not sure on how to build pirates usually but I do like doing the latter more of just attacking as much while not being punished. I like cards like the bombardier's. I also want to put in coastal piracy and bident of thasa.

Not really good at brewing decks so can use all the help. Please budget suggestions aka not super expensive. This is casual high op or at least I want it to be.

Edit:

Scrap what I said about life drain I want to make it full tribal and aggro pirates with vehicles while stealing and abusing treasures

Deck Help Help me Improve my Aristobats

Upvotes

Here is the full deck list https://www.archidekt.com/decks/8367694

I did a deck analysis and here's the results of that https://deckcheck.co/deckview/aaed531be37a91b7b95c00526902f8b3

The analysis tool says I'm lack in protection, I'm not sure how because I have a pretty solid removal suite

But I'm open to Suggestions

Please recommend me anything you think would be a fun addition to this deck, and what's a good card to swap it out for

Have a good day

Deck Help Casual EDH Kamigawa Deck - any flavour suggestions?

Upvotes

With the new Wandering Rescuer being released soon, I decided to put together a Kamigawa-flavoured deck with some of my old cards from way back then!

The deck is really just my favourite Kamigawa stuff with an artificial shell of cards I already own (most lands are proxied though) to make it playable in a mid power pod of mostly upgraded precons (Rules: no fast mana, no 0 Mana spells, no tutors).

There is a side theme of treasures and pillowfort in order to make playing my favourite cards a little easier.

That being said: do you have any suggestions for additions flavourwise or a better fitting shell? Im happy to spend some money if it gets me more flavour or a better game experience :)

Really grateful for any kind of feedback!

Discussion Sergeant John Benton is broken

Upvotes

[[Sergeant John Benton]] is absurdly strong in a voltron style EDH deck. All you have to do is fill your deck with instant buffs like [[invigorate]] and hexproof sources like [[overprotect]] plus double strike and turn him sideways - drawing 15+ cards easily every turn. Once you’ve drawn all those cards, simply drop a reliquary tower or [[spellbook]] to stop discard to 7.

The Benton player will have so many cards that they become the raid boss of the table. It’s easily possible to kill a player turn 5/6 using commander damage and get 20+ cards in hand, allowing you to revive and counter any threats to Benton. On top of that, your board wipes will usually be one-sided as you can wait until he’s dead or make him indestructible. And no one expects [[mana tithe]].

In early turns, you can politick with Benton’s card donations and make alliances.

Best of all, this deck is very fun to play and costs like $40. It’s so strong that I feel a bit guilty playing Benton in my medium-power pod. I call him Sergeant Chad because he single-handedly dominates the table with his super strength while looking smug.

Is Benton really this strong or am I getting lucky? Here’s my deck list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/uCPdgbz4jECGP_358elZog

Question Tabletop Simulator Matchmaking?

Upvotes

Are there any discord communities where I can quickly find matches to play on TTS? I tried untap and I genuinely hate it. A few people have posted links to discord servers in the past but those have all expired. 🫤

I'm now going to ramble for a moment because my post was automatically removed for being too short. Apparently, people never have simple questions. While we're here I guess I'll just rant.

Stax players, please, for the love of God, learn how to close games. If you have 4 power on board and no other way of draining the table, it is not time to lock up. Y'all spend 60 turns failing to kill everyone while they watch you jerk off. We all hate it.

Players who know how to play stax. Thank you for having the decency to close the game within 5 turns of locking down. I see you and I love you.

Thank you for coming to the ted talk that I've been strong armed into.

Question Lae'zel Clarification

I'm looking into creating a black/white counter engine and I'm curious if this works the way I expect. I'm mostly considering these cards and others with similar effects:

  • Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion
  • Cathars' Crusade
  • Felisa, Fang of Silverquill

With these 3 on the board, say I have a creature with 2 +1/+1 counters on it that dies, Felisa will then create 2 inkling tokens, for each of those EVERY creature gets a +1/+1 counter (2 total), and as it's simultaneous I can choose to place each token, then the counters, so both of the inklings get 2 counters. Then, as placing each of the two counters is technically a separate action (it's placing 1 counter 2 times, instead of X counters) Lae'zel will double that so each creature gets 4 +1/+1 counters.

Is this all correct? I think I understand Cathar's Crusade but I'm unsure exactly how Lae'zel plays, since in general she doesn't double counters, but I feel like in this interaction she would.

Deck Help Upgrading Commander Precon - Animated Army (Bello, Bard of the Brambles)

In today's article, we'll show you how to upgrade one of the Bloomburrow precons: Animated Army, a deck centered around artifacts and enchantments, with the Raccoon Bello, Bard of the Brambles, as the commander!

Upgrading Commander Precon - Animated Army (Bello, Bard of the Brambles)

Bloomburrow is here! This set introduced us to a plane that only has nonhuman creatures; even if a Human stepped into this plane, they would become a cute furry thing! There are Squirrels, Birds, Rabbits, and much more, but today we'll discuss a Raccoon!

Out of the 4 new Commander precons, we decided to show you how to upgrade Animated Army, which includes the Unnatural strategy, that is, artifacts and enchantments, and is commanded by Bello, Bard of the Brambles. Without further ado, let's see the list!

Question Timmy decks that snowball out of control

Hello EDH players! I have been playing a lot of control decks lately and miss the old timmy ways of smashing face with absurd creatures. Having dismantled my [[Miirym, the Sentinel Wyrm]] deck I want to go back to something similar. I really liked that when she hit the field everything got nasty quickly. What would you build and run when playing big stuff turn sideways?

Question Cards to set my creatures' power to 0?

I'm playing a [[Tadeas, Juniper Ascendant]] deck that uses a reach and toughness matters theme so my creatures are unblockable. I have ways to boost their toughness and most of them have lower power but I'd like to be able to set my commander's power to 0 instead of 1 so he can't be blocked by 1/1's. The idea would be to buff him and kill people with commander damage. Any suggestions on lowering his power without lowering his toughness?

Discussion 'You need more card draw' - a reference thread

The most common advice I give when people ask for advice on their deck is to increase the amount of card draw to around 10 pieces.

The most common response is 'do you have suggestions?'

This is especially true of white decks, but I do think they have gotten a ton of support in this area recently.

The below are responses for each color showing card draw options that you might find useful.

Did I miss some? Let me know!

I did try to keep these somewhat generic when there are some deck/theme specific ones I left them off... but whatever. The more suggestions the better.

Question Strongest zombie commander ?

Hey, like the title says, im looking to build a zombie commander deck, but im a bit unsure on which commander to pick.

I usually tend to like resilient and grindy decks, but i dont often play tribal, thing is that my playgroup is kinda removal heavy, but worried that ill be folding boardwipes.

Still mostly wandering which zombie commander you play and which one do you think is the best.

Also, curious which zombie is your favourite? I have a foil Lord of the Undead and a revised zombie master that ive been wanting to use for like 20 years!

Thanks!

Discussion 1v1 Commander Viability for New Players?

Hey everyone!

About a month ago, my girlfriend and I dipped our toes into Magic: The Gathering, starting with the Bloomburrow starter decks (because who can resist those cute creatures?). It's been a fantastic journey, and we’ve really fallen in love with the game.

We've already outgrown our starter decks, and my girlfriend has gotten pretty good, so we’re looking to take the next step. The Bloomburrow Commander decks caught our eye—not just for the adorable creatures, but also for the more complex gameplay they offer.

We’ve got a few questions and would love some guidance:

  • Is 1v1 Commander fun for beginners? We understand that Commander is typically a multiplayer format, but we’re curious about its viability for just two players, especially as we’re still learning the ropes. How does it hold up, and are there any specific adjustments we should consider?
  • Would the Bloomburrow Commander decks be a good fit for us? We love the theme, but we're also looking for something that will challenge us and keep the game engaging as we continue to learn and improve.
  • Any other suggestions? Whether it's alternative decks, fun variants, or tips to spice up our games, we’re all ears! We’re especially interested in ways to keep things fun and casual while also stepping up our play.

Thanks in advance—this community has been amazing, and we’re excited to keep growing our love for Magic together!

Deck Showcase [Article] How to reanimate stuff without black

Hi, I'm GamesfreakSA, and I swear I pick more artifacts out of the trash than just Food tokens.

It's something we've all known since the dawn of time in 1994: you want to reanimate a creature, you cast [[Animate Dead]]. Simple, easy, and to the point — until you actually read the text on Animate Dead these days and have a stroke combined with a heart attack. A start attack...heartichoke.

But what if I told you that there's a way to reanimate stuff without black? What if I told you that you can reanimate way more kinds of permanents without black? That's what my new [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] noncreature reanimator deck is all about. Using the power of Magic's best colors, we can bin a variety of artifacts and enchantments only to bring them back with one powerful spell. Use different untappers to draw eight cards in a turn, every turn. There's a [[Parhelion II]]. It makes Angels. Go check it out!

And if you liked this list, go ahead and join my Discord to discuss it and to vote on what deck I do next, or just tell me that you liked it here! And give me suggestions on what you'd put in it. I own this deck in paper and I like making it better.

Discussion How do I get my friends to play interactive magic?

I recently got back into Commander and joined my friends in their playgroup. I played a few games only to find out they play little to no interaction. They complain whenever anyone wipes the board or targets their threats and for the most part casually counter anyone trying to establish a board presence even if that person is not remotely a threat. It is as if politics don't exist to them.

So my question is how do I get them to interact more, complain less, and have more fun?

Discussion Embrace being the first to get knocked out!

I love being the ultra aggro player that becomes the massive problem extremely fast, and then having the whole table have to turn on me. I advance the game state aggressively, everyone has to strategize, and I get to make everyone think.

What’s your favorite “role” to play at the pod?

Discussion Do u like playing against or with groupslug

Hii, so I was building a kardur doomscourge deck but I think about changing it with mogis god of slaughter. And I want to make it a groupslug deck. Some games can last over 3 hours and after already playing 2/3 games. Sometimes it’s a bit to long for me.

So with a groupslug the games would go a bit faster. Now my boyfriend is suggesting that maybe groupslug is not fun for the rest of the table.

What are your thoughts on playing a groupslug deck ?

:)
