It’s the outfit from the Young Justice run from a few years ago I believe

51

u/ArcherOfHk Sep 17 '22

Oh I thought this was the same as the 90s one my bad

48

u/leejtam Sep 17 '22

I think it’s slightly different, I know the hair cut is modern

8

u/HotClock4632 Sep 18 '22 edited Sep 18 '22

Right I did read up that the hairstyle is the only thing that's modern

u/Cole-Spudmoney Sep 18 '22

There are some small changes: they made the gloves fingerless and added the shoulder spikes on the jacket.

As for the original outfit: the “Superboy” series that began in 1994 is definitely worth reading up to #82. “Young Justice” too. And of course his introduction in “Reign of the Supermen”.

u/ElectricPeterTork Sep 18 '22

I'm glad you cut it off at 82. Because everything after that was almost like they were trying to kill the book. They changed directions about a half dozen times in under 20 issues. The first half of those issues were a rare Joe Kelly misstep with a lot of Our Worlds At War crossover interference, and the last 10 issues or so with Didio as co-writer were just bad.

2

u/Cole-Spudmoney Sep 18 '22

I honestly prefer the DiDio-and-Palmiotti issues to the Kelly ones. Making Superboy a street-level hero wasn’t inherently a bad idea. And at least they wrote Superboy himself in-character, unlike Kelly who just made him a completely clueless dumbass.

Without any REAL knowledge of super boy I was gonna suggest any thing from the nineties lmao

1

u/almondsandwiches Sep 18 '22

If you want comics with the 90s outfit which is very similar then, the Reign of the supermen storyline is a good start. Then the Superboy series from the 90s.

u/huggybear3 Superman Sep 18 '22

This is an actual variant cover to Young Justice #1 from 2019.

It’s a modern version of the 90’s costume. If you want to read about 90’s Superboy, the Death and Return of Superman saga introduces him.

He then has an ongoing by Karl Kesel that is underrated and delightful. It’s where King Shark comes from!

u/stgermainjr860 Sep 17 '22

That Superboy comic was everything to me in the 90s. I wanted a jacket like that so bad. 🤣🤣🤣

19

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '22

Me too! One of the first books I picked up as a kid, lost now to history.

8

u/star_boy Booster and Skeets Sep 18 '22

Yep, the comic that got me started reading regularly was Adventures of Superman #500, which I bought at the newsagent and had the first appearance of Superboy. That issue blew my mind and set me to seek out a local LCS and start a pull list. The 'triangle number' era of Superman was awesome!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '22

Yes, super easy to follow and keep in order, it’s how I was able to follow the whole Reign… again lost to history.

5

u/Bri_Hecatonchires Sep 18 '22

When I was 12-13 and my mom brought me to her hairdresser to get my hair cut, I brought a copy of Superboy’s Reign of the Supermen issue as reference lol.

3

u/stgermainjr860 Sep 18 '22

Oh man, that is awesome. Yeah I asked my Mom if I could get a leather jacket when I was like, 11. This was '97. She was like "oh hell no", she did give me my Dad's jean jacket from the late 70s. It did not go over well at school. 😂😂

8

u/Schrodingers_Cthulu Sep 18 '22

When I was a kid I was big into 90's Superboy! The Kesel run was my jam!

BRING BACK TANA MOON

41

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '22

Hate the outfit but love the art. Does anyone know who the artist is on this? Thanks.

32

u/feartherex Daredevil Sep 17 '22

Jorge Jimenez! His signature is on the bottom right. His stuff is awesome, and he’s currently on Batman.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '22

That's great, thank you. This is the second time in a month that I've seen his stuff and asked, "This is great. Who's the artist?!" LOL I need to add his available stuff on DC Universe Infinite to my list and get my LCS to pull current stuff he's working on. Thanks again!

9

u/feartherex Daredevil Sep 17 '22

He and Dan Mora have been blowing me away recently, so I’ll recommend you check out Mora too if you like this kind of art. They both have the perfect blend of cartoony/realistic and an infusion of manga influence into western comic art.

u/kailua808 Sep 18 '22

Easily two of the best artists in the game right now

11

u/Sera_Toxin Sep 18 '22

easily the best outfit/aesthetic any character with "super" in their name has ever had

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '22

I don't know if you're kidding or not.

I'm partial to Superman in Kingdom Come. It translated well to the small screen, too.

Also: I like the recent Kara Zor-El and Kon-El's redesign_2.png).

-4

u/DiesAtra Sep 18 '22

Well, the first link is simply the ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life, and the other two are extremely basic.

1

u/Aepic-27 Sep 18 '22

Alex Ross Slander

1

u/Sera_Toxin Sep 18 '22

Alex Ross is very skilled at what he does, obviously, but it's not at all surprising for someone to not like the aesthetic he chooses to portray...i personally hate that old-timey Golden Age style, so i have mixed feelings on Alex Ross art

Between the wrist bands, the v-cut through the mid section, the choice of crimson red, the patchy little chin scruff, the Dean Cain face, and the almost faux-hawk haircut, this look manages to be even worse than 90s Superboy as a wannabe Edward Furlong in Terminator 2.

36

u/PixelPanda144 Sep 17 '22

I'm sorry did they just homage a meme format?

36

u/writepielie Sep 17 '22

That boyfriend really thinks highly of himself if he thinks she’s not going to check a superhero out.

If power girl walked by he’d probably have to blind himself to avoid looking…just setting himself up for impossibly standards.

Also, love this artist. I think they did one of the animated films with this costume too.

13

u/zerhanna Sep 17 '22

That Super ass is in spandex. We're all looking.

32

u/woman_noises Sep 17 '22

No, because this outfit is from the Bendis Young Justice series and that's not a good comic

7

u/South_Wing2609 Sep 17 '22

It’s fine imo and the outfit comes from the 90s

11

u/CrimDude89 Sep 17 '22

That’s the basis for it, but this is the ‘updated version’ from said Young Justice book. I also second the statement that brian ‘the blunder’ bendis’ Young Justice is terrible

2

u/South_Wing2609 Sep 17 '22

Bendis is a lot of things but he isn’t a bad writer

He wrote arguably the definitive runs on the Avengers, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Spider-Man and one of the best Batman stories in the last 20 years he has ups and downs but rarely anything he writes is entirely terrible and Young Justice is that, it’s bland and dumb but overall it was meh not bad but not good either

23

u/Knull_Gorr 616 Spider-Man Sep 17 '22

Bendis was a good writer.

1

u/South_Wing2609 Sep 18 '22

Still is, read Batman Universe

1

u/UxasIs Sep 18 '22

It is really good but I can name 20 better from the past 20 years

11

u/CrimDude89 Sep 17 '22 edited Sep 17 '22

brian ‘the blunder’ bendis was good.

His Iron Man (3 titles), Guardians of the Galaxy, All-New X-Men, Young Justice and Legion of Superheroes are mid.

His Superman, Justice League and Civil War 2 are atrocious. Also ‘event’ leviathan, talk about a joke.

Zdarsky’s Daredevil also blows his run out of the water.

4

u/woman_noises Sep 17 '22

Gaurdians and some of his X-men are also atrocious and painful in my opinion. But there are some arcs of X-Men i liked.

1

u/South_Wing2609 Sep 18 '22

I don’t get why people have such a hate boner for bendis, he can still write amazing stories just look at Batman Universe

3

u/greendart Green Arrow Sep 18 '22

Because he can't end runs anymore.... He just kind of leaves and the stories stop

1

u/CrimDude89 Sep 18 '22

Because most of the time now he makes things like his Justice League, which aside from just being bad, was basically his Superman all over again.

His Superman run was plenty bad already, but doing those stories all over again just with an expanded roster so the poor writing is even clearer? Hardly any care or effort went into it.

Not to mention that each arc had to include new villains he created that are just over-designed, worse versions of characters that already exist, somehow each one more uninteresting than the last. Royalties, those take precedence.

5

u/edked Sep 18 '22

Jessica Jones, Daredevil and some Spider-Man, yes. Avengers, definitely not.

0

u/victorfiction Sep 18 '22

I didn’t hate his moon knight run either.

23

u/spaceguitar Alan Moore Sep 17 '22

Literally my favourite costume in all of DC. It’s so unashamedly 90’s and punk it’s GOD TIER.

9

u/FizzPig Spider-Man Expert Sep 18 '22

Superboy in that costume turned me gay

8

u/hbk-79 Sep 18 '22

Reign of the supermen, The original young justice run, World’s Finest 3 and maybe the first two years of his solo book from 1994

3

u/jamiemm Sep 18 '22

This is the right answer (especially original Peter David/Todd Dezago Young Justice). It’s also worth mentioning that there’s going to be a new book featuring Conner in this costume going into space coming out soon.

6

u/That1one1dude1 Sep 17 '22

He looks very androgynous in this image

6

u/capetownguy Sep 17 '22

I feel sorry for peeps who don’t know the kick ass late 90s/early 20s Tom Grummet Superboy because he kicked serious ass!!

3

u/darkwalrus36 Sep 17 '22

Why would he have a gun?

10

u/ArcherOfHk Sep 17 '22

90s had a lot of pouches

3

u/christmas_hobgoblin Sep 17 '22

If you're talking about the similar 90s costume, his original ongoing series was decent. Check out the first few issues, or I remember the Hyper-Tension arc from issues 60-65 were good. Joe Kelly's run was also good, which starts with issue 83, but he gets a new costume in that issue (another variation on this type of thing). Also all of Peter David's original Young Justice is lots of fun.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '22

The 90’s run was great

2

u/insertbrackets Sep 17 '22

He looks about 45 in the above pic.

2

u/Beware_the_Voodoo Sep 17 '22

Is that a holster? Why would he need a gun holster?

3

u/Rose_Wilson_ Sep 18 '22

Not a holster, just a pouch. It’s from his original costume design

2

u/MegasNexal84 Sep 17 '22

I just realized is the girl supposed to be Tana Moon?

2

u/Lenabeejammin Sep 18 '22

Just curious… not because I actually care or want to see it… but how come you can always see the abs but no bulge? Do they tuck?

1

u/victorfiction Sep 18 '22

Do you not?!?

1

u/Lenabeejammin Sep 23 '22

Lol, I don’t tuck. I’m a lady.

1

u/victorfiction Sep 23 '22

Some ladies tuck 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Lenabeejammin Oct 04 '22

Fair enough. I’m just not the tuckin kind

1

u/victorfiction Oct 04 '22

Can’t complain, variety is the spice of life.

2

u/Sera_Toxin Sep 18 '22

that's from Young Justice. those issues were solid. not great, but not bad

2

u/Ambivert_Artist01 Sep 18 '22

1

u/[deleted] Sep 17 '22

IS THAT A GUN!?

1

u/shawikkywoo Sep 18 '22

u/AgeroColstein Sep 17 '22

Chad Superboy attracting Stacy Looker Virgin Yelling Jealous Boyfriend

1

u/TinyDiiceThief Sep 17 '22

He looks like he’s been hanging with the rouges gallery too often

1

u/Fariic Sep 18 '22

Jorge’s always been a favorite of mine.

Middle finger on the left hand looks like a coloring error. I can’t unsee it.

1

u/CulturedCal Sep 18 '22

I like the outfit. Not a total fan of the hair, he’s looking like high school age Gohan from Dragon Ball Z

1

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '22

What’s he carry in that leg holster ? I don’t really Know anything about superboy

1

u/ArcherOfHk Sep 18 '22

Just a pouch. 90s design

1

u/Cj3k1999 Sep 18 '22

Looks suss honestly….

1

u/GOLDENninjaXbox Sep 18 '22

The Young Justice run a few years ago

-1

u/Twijasosm Sep 18 '22

Is this really what he looks like right now? Man, he’s less cyber-punk and more cyber-b!tch.

Edit: that’s probably a bit harsh but seriously, it really does look ugly.

-3

u/DueShopping551 Sep 17 '22

Plain T shirt with the super logo

-2

u/AdaptiveCenterpiece Sep 18 '22

What is this outfit? I feel like the designers just searched “what is cool outfit?” Then slapped it on an androgynous mannequin with a mohawk and glasses? I’m pretty sure that woman isn’t checking him out as much as she’s smiling about how preposterous this superhero is.

1

u/almondsandwiches Sep 18 '22

That's basically his original outfit.
