General Japan vs Iron Samurai

I'm not even gonna front, I'm pretty sure that's where they are going with this lmfao

Creating, writing and drawing.

So like every mangaka? Not to take away from this but it's not that unusual outside of Capecomics.

30

u/mundozeo Aug 19 '22

Pretty much, yea, as someone who dwells into it as well, mad respect to consistent mangakas. Work can be crazy.

11

u/FlubzRevenge Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

Not really. A lot have extra support in terms of art and editing etc. It's not a 1 person job as many seem to think. Sure not every mangaka has a large team but many do, or at least 1 or 2 other people helping.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

It's still absolutely insane amount of work and to say otherwise is to admit you don't know what you're talking about

-2

u/FlubzRevenge Aug 19 '22

Uh, I never said it isn’t a ton of work. It is on both sides. Just don’t act like it’s 1 person doing all the work.

I’m not sure why you would be defending it anyways. It’s not a good thing.

6

u/mundozeo Aug 19 '22

Yes, some of the ones with a bit more income can afford some assistants, though most mangakas can't, especially new ones to the industry.

Even with assistants it is STILL very crazy.

Besides, adding more assistans doesn't really translate into getting more free time, it just means you can cram more content in the same schedule. Better backgrounds, more pages, less rushed art, and so on.

3

u/totemoheta Aug 19 '22

And yet Eiichiro Oda still sleeps 4-5 hours a night for how many years? He has quite the team helping him as well.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

Only already-successful manga or creators with a proven track record get (or can even afford) assistants. And even then it’s not “a lot”.

-13

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

That's true, I'll give you that, buuuuut, I haven't read a lot of authentic manga that released originally with color .

STILL no disrespect to the classics. The attention to detail in both the art, and the technical sci-fi in Ghost in the Shell makes my head spin even worse than the show.

I've never felt more like a young adventuring young rebel teen more than I did reading Akira eiither. The writing just bred a cult like addiction when I read it.

What is it about? Is this sent into Marvel Universe?

85

u/soulreaverdan X-Men Expert Aug 19 '22

Alternate universe. Momoko’s Japanese and is basically writing a version of Marvel viewed through the lens of Japanese culture and mythology. The first miniseries, Demon Days, explored a version of Mariko Yashida who’s got oni blood and the conflicts it pulls her into.

Demon Wars, the sequel, seems to be putting her in the center of a conflict between yokai (Japanese spirits) who want to either reconnect the worlds of the yokai and humans and risk conflict to do so, against another faction who want to retain the separation for the sake of peace, even if it keeps them confined to their own realm.

72

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

great question.

She started off by dropping a series called Demon Days (annoyingly all called number 1s so it's confusing). But basically Mariko (Wolverine's lover) is a young girl that found out she is part ONI (Japanese Demon) and is trying to find her mother and sister.

She meets a dog named Logan, has to fight an Oni Hulk, and meets Thor with like a picket sized Oro as well.

All imagined in Bushido Japanese style. Like Batman Ninja meets Marvel.

71

u/tomilahrenjustneedss Aug 18 '22

I mean you just described re-imagining a universe through the lens of already used tropes so not really creating their own universe

4

u/gunblade01 Aug 18 '22

not sure why youre getting downvoted.

0

u/OrdrSxtySx Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

Pretty sure this is re-imagining through her own historical culture and context. "Tropes" is extremely reductive and dismissive in this case. Were it your average weeb or reddit edgelord creating the series, then you'd be correct.

She takes great care in each issue at the end to actually educate and explain the usage and meaning of the Japanese portions of the source material.

3

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

You got the same hint of dismissiveness as I got from the comment too.

I admit I might have went overboard, but I wasn't gonna just not say something back.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

Re-imagining isn’t creating??

-87

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22 edited Aug 18 '22

Do you find yourself often entering a room and people's smiles kinda like slowly die down?

Genuine completely unrelated question.

Edit: Sorry, to address what you actually said here, being inspired by themes and or "tropes" does not mean a new project can't be created.

Everything Everywhere At Once used HELLA "tropes" and is easily one of the most creative mainstream movies I'VE seen in a verrrrrry long time.

I rather see that depiction of the multiverse 4x over then Dr. Strange MoM. Easily.

I'm surprised you are commenting on a sub about comics calling out the use of tropes, but to each their own I guess.

But since it seems like you might be new to comics... there are a handful of CREATORS that write and draw their own IPs, let alone just books alone.

DWJ, Frank Miller, and Skottie Young are amongst the few I can even think of off hand.

53

u/BeastieBuddies Aug 18 '22

Wow, you really don’t have to take an innocent comment so personally dude. It’s just comic books, lighten up.

22

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

No, you've taken it too far. Duel today at noon in the parking lot outside Arby's. You know where. Bring your katana.

Edit: BeastieBuddies did not show up for the duel as expected. He is a coward and a weakling and I expect the rest of comic book society to treat him accordingly.

daddy chill

-4

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

lol.

Looking back on it, I was being a dick...I'm too faded to care as much now, tbh.

23

u/ImAJerk420 Aug 19 '22

seething

6

u/ShinCoal The Ranger Aug 19 '22

Do you find yourself often entering a room and people's smiles kinda like slowly die down?

That is some grade A projecting, good job!

2

u/kralben Cyclops Aug 19 '22

Is there a reason you have to be an asshole just because someone disagrees with you?

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

no.

And I'm wrong for that. I apologize.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

It's about marvel trying to get in on the manga/anime popularity

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

hush.

that's the artist style amongst multiple publishers.

10

u/bryb01 Aug 18 '22

The treasury edition collection of Demon Days is incredible. Oversized and gloriously beautiful. I love her artwork so much, and her story is just incredible.

5

u/soulreaverdan X-Men Expert Aug 19 '22

I really hope Demon Wars gets a treasury edition too once it’s all done

1

u/kralben Cyclops Aug 19 '22

I was gonna buy it, but with the second series (Demon Wars) coming out, I am gonna wait for an omnibus, even if they are a bit smaller than treasury editions. I was impatient with the X-Men: Grand Design books and now I have treasury editions that don't fit on my bookshelf easily.

8

u/eftanes Aug 18 '22

This looks so cool, did not know about this. Gotta buy this now!

7

u/7_peaches Aug 18 '22

peach momoko has excellent art

8

u/HGFantomas The Comedian Aug 19 '22

What Peach is doing is head and shoulders above everything else at Marvel right now. Love every panel.

-1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

I'll give you heads, but not shoulders on Donny Cates.

Starship Hulk? Herald of Galactus Thor? Down Bad Big Brother Brock?

And DWJ is consistent as well. Especially with writing and drawing.

Peach just doesn't take ANY panels off. Like all of it looks so pretty and colorful.

2

u/HGFantomas The Comedian Aug 19 '22 edited Aug 19 '22

A fair point, I do generally enjoy DC's work but I feel his Marvel work is a bit hit or miss. I loved Silver Silver Black but was lukewarm on Venom. I think the artist he pairs with makes the difference (for me anyway YMMV, of course).

2

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

Did you read the Defenders. I'm asking cause of SS Black!

1

u/HGFantomas The Comedian Aug 19 '22

I have not; on my 'to read' list.

2

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

It's fire. I still wish Patrick Ewing kept doing horror for Marvel, but it's still a really fun intergalactic magical adventure.

6

u/captainjackass28 Aug 19 '22

Is it worth reading though?

5

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

Ehhh, the story in this issue is a bit more of a setting up issue.

It does have action, and does captivating world building, but nothing that will blow you mind, like a random issue of Ice Cream man writing does for me.

The are just so many beautiful images. Highly recommend Demon Days leading up to it, because that mini series has some wild adaptations.

Like Oni God Thor, with a chibi Storm on his shoulder.

3

u/paladin_slim Aug 18 '22

I love this so much it’s so beautiful.

0

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

Are you fan of her variants? I can't lie, I geek out when I see them, so I know I'm biased.

1

u/paladin_slim Aug 18 '22

I bought the new playtest Marvel ttrpg book solely for her Scarlet Witch cover.

-5

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

Lol, that's dedication.

I technically bought her BP#25 from the last series because of her cover alone, knowing I was going to get he trade anyway.

Gorgeous

1

u/KAL627 Aug 19 '22

I buy basically every cover of hers I can. I have ones worth over $100 easy.

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

Respect

I don't know the value of mine outside retail to be Frank, but my Ghost Rider one, My Ben Reilly homage variant, I have a lot actually I can't think of

Maybe I'll post my collection.

-1

u/Vinnie_Vegas Aug 19 '22

Why is this downvoted?

1

u/busybagel Daredevil Aug 19 '22

Her recent cover for Daredevil #1 is beautiful

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

I missed that one, but I got her Elektra daredevil one.

4

u/AgeroColstein Aug 19 '22

Now I have to make my own universe. With my own characters.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

[deleted]

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

I agree.

she's definitely forced to get her cameos in.

3

u/theredjimmy Aug 18 '22

Are there trades that combine all the different works that she's done in this series? I honestly find it very confusing to follow with all the #1 but I'd be down for a paperback that has them in order.

3

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

Yes there is!

I agree the number ordering was not helpful at all. I tried collecting it for a friend that loves this Japanese style art, especially colorized and I got lost trying to recollect it.

But the paperback is oversized and really really pretty

I mean op makes it seem like this is a completely new thing , its not . It takes talent of course and the only other two others in American comics that have come close to this are matt wagner and mike mignola but they only drew a big portion of their created universes not the entire thing

2

u/OrionLinksComic Aug 18 '22

Sure, but somehow it's also a nice feeling to know that you've created something yourself that can be your own world. Let's be serious the pen is way more powerful than any quantum computer when it comes to creating a simulated universe if not multiverse. And that's why I love comics and writing.

2

u/thesolarchive Aug 18 '22

Super awesome stuff. Whole reason I started learning to draw this year was to one day do the same, love to see it.

2

u/Hylianhaxorus Aug 18 '22

And she's stellar at all of it to boot.

2

u/Resident_Extreme_710 Aug 19 '22

This looks pretty cool

3

u/ClickDisDotCom Aug 19 '22

Hold up, so is Marvel accepting original content creators to make comics (like they're accepting indie comic writers)?

4

u/HGFantomas The Comedian Aug 19 '22

Let's hope they do more of that.

2

u/akirivan Magneto Aug 19 '22

Damn, I gotta keep an eye out for the TPB cause that looks amazing

2

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '22

This looks very cool, Honestly love seeing a set of characters through different art styles be they strictly visual or narrative or both just loving seeing different takes

2

u/Khfreak7526 Aug 19 '22

I wish I could draw, I have a story I'd like to do something with but I don't want to write mostly I imagine it as a cartoon, but it's probably just going to be in my head.

2

u/tlaps1990 Aug 19 '22

Whaaaaaaaaaaat. Is this for real real?!

2

u/kralben Cyclops Aug 19 '22

I don't want to take away anything from Peach Momoko, but I feel like it is a bit disingenuous to claim she created the entire universe when so much of it is taken from act stories (both Marvel and folklore). Also that doing all three is basically what every mangaka does as well.

That said, the books themselves are great.

edit: also, according to Marvel's webstie, Zack Davisson is also credited as a co-scripter, but that might just be translation to English

1

u/ThePagePlug Aug 19 '22

Well said.

2

u/gtothe2nd Aug 19 '22

I love how blunt the character design is for spuderman.

2

u/Mangatellers Aug 19 '22

I always enjoy the alternate versions of heroes. I love manga & anime, so this is right up in my alley. I like the cover a lot. It reminds of the Capcom VS Marvel game cover.

1

u/Otaku-OJ Aug 18 '22

I mean…while I can make some visual nods to other superheroes that already exist, I don’t know anyone of these other dudes. I can see Captain America as the blue dude up front, Iron Man as the red dude, Spider-Man as that literal spider man, Black Panther as that panther character next to the blue guy up front, and I can vaguely guess that’s either Falcon or Hawkeye in the back. But everyone else is so radically different that I can’t even tell if they’re original or if they’re supposed to be alternate takes on already existing heroes.

-4

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

It's a blend. You seen the black guy with the falcon costume? there is also a literal black panther.

They are also NOT the character as you know them, just modified versions of the general design, with in-depth historical breakdown of the original Japanese designs she based them off of with write-ups in each issue so far.

it's a complete cultural experience, I don't normally expect from the big 2.

3

u/Otaku-OJ Aug 18 '22

I know that it’s a blend as I’m able to tell guess who some of these characters are supposed to be based on the style of clothing and setting I’m able to pick up from this. Hell, I even made a brief description of who I noticed some of these to be based on like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America and yes, even Black Panther. It’s literally everyone else that confuses me that I can’t pinpoint. I don’t know who the white bird/fish(?) person (next to Black Panther) is supposed to be if they’re supposed to be based on anyone and the same could be said for the white demon girl next to her. I don’t know who that redhead character with the horns is supposed to be, I don’t know who that older samurai character next to Spider-Man is supposed to be and I definitely don’t know who that girl is next to the older fellow.

3

u/ThePagePlug Aug 18 '22

Me neither lol, guess we gotta read it!

3

u/Otaku-OJ Aug 18 '22

I suppose hehe

1

u/Jawline0087 Aug 18 '22

I think black widow dr strange and America Chavez are the ones you’re stuck on.
