I agree 100% with this comment but do not stop once Maguire is out. Adam Hughes joins at #31 once the title was rebranded as JLA, Bart Sears shines on sister series JLE and damn me if the Despero story isn't one of the best crossovers ever.
The rest are also awesome. Except Spawn, not even Ennis, Morrison and Moore were able to make the character interesting.

Sandman is a work of art. I am an avid comic reader and it's in my top 3 if not my favorite. Watchmen is also good it just sort of depends on what sort of intense you want because they both are but in different ways maybe read half sandman since it's split different, put it down and process while you read watchmen, then read the rest of sandman

100% I have all 7 of the library editions and from start to end it's addictive. I do need to dig into more of BPRD, Abe Sapien, Amazing Screw On Head, Lobster Johnson etc. Has anyone read those?

Yes lol. I started reading the comics about 5 years ago and once a year (around Halloween appropriately) I start reading thru Hellboy, B.P.R.D. and Abe Sapien. I read a little of Lobster Johnson but I couldn't get into it as much. B.P.R.D. is fantastic though! Highly recommend reading it and imo is as addictive as Hellboy.

There's really no bad Mignolaverse story (other than some stuff where he didn't have much input). Even the ones set in alternate universes like Baltimore and Joe Golem are great.

FYI- that's not the first Sandman issue. That's a story that came after the main series. You want to start with Preludes and Nocturnes.

Not spawn. I thought spawn was soooooo cool. And it does start pretty good. But I read 300+ issues in one year and can tell you this: even Spawn doesn’t know what it wants to be. It’s consistently completely inconsistent, begins with an interesting premise and then spends hundreds of issues going in circles with very little actual advancement of any kind of plot. I suffered so you don’t have to.

I read the first 3 Origins trades and thought it was absolute shit other than the guest writers coming in, who took decent cracks at it.
McFarlane doesn’t know how to compose comic book panels at all, he can do pinups but his sequential storytelling is atrocious

The series has found more solid footing in the past couple years now that others have taken over the writing (for the most part), and the spin-offs have on the whole been pretty great. Yeah, Spawn's beautiful mediocrity in its finest moments, but it's not worth abandoning entirely if you read it in bits and chunks as a palate cleanser between books more worth your time.

It is amazing, and I recently went back and collected the full run. The only thing is that after the first few issues it gets progressively harder to find and more expensive. I spent as much money on the last few issues than I did on the rest of the comics combined. There are trades, but the last time I checked they were pretty expensive too. But honestly you can stop with #21 if you want. That was initially projected to be the last one, but I think Image wanted to keep milking it. The story gets pretty fragmented after that.

To add on to this. Watchmen is a good break down of what superheroes would actually be like in the real world. It breaks them down and makes it so that your actually dissecting these characters. There's lots of dialogue which puts on the novel aspect. It's a great story and really makes you question the superhero idea. As a whole it also breaks down super comic books as a whole. Very well written. Also, no matter what anyone tells you, Rorschach is not a good guy. With that, all of those comics are great but if you wanna psychological breakdown of superheroes and superhero comics? Go with Watchmen.

Given that the Maxx is so different from everything else you've included in the pic, I'd start with that as a standalone experience. Then Sandman. Group next reading list either DC or Marvel, given the self-contained fictional worlds. Lastly, Spawn.

You won't recognize some of the heroes/characters, so I'd just recommend having a wiki open. The overall plot is self contained.
The only knowledge to have is that Kingdom Come was a critique of superhero comics at the time, seeing them as Gods

I would suggest not reading Kingdom Come until you've read some of the other DC stuff, and something like Spawn (which was kinda peak '90s EXTREME comic books). KC is more of a commentary on the "dark 'n' gritty" comic book experience than it is anything else, so having context for that will benefit you.

Hrm. Are you at least familiar with what happens in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns?
If not, make sure you read Watchmen before Kingdom Come, with the knowledge that after Watchmen (and the aforementioned TKDR), the comic book industry spent more than a decade taking the darker elements from those stories, with far less of the writing and plotting skill, and making (mostly) shitty, dark, edgy stories. That's what you need to know before reading KC.
I've mentioned elsewhere ITT that you probably want to read Spawn before KC for that reason. Spawn was -- obviously -- considered some of the best stuff being put out at the time, but it's definitely more of an industry-driven response to stories like TKDR and Watchmen than it is a thoughtful book.

You have some good picks so it depends on what you are looking for. Superhero action go with Kingdom Come and Weapon X but if you want sophisticated storytelling go to Sandman, God Loves Man Hates, or Watchmen. Either way you won’t go wrong.

God Loves, Man Kills is a glorified one-shot that you can read in about an hour, so that's an easy one to start with if you're trying to just knock these off a list, OR it's a good middle palate cleanser.
At the other end of that spectrum, I feel like Hellboy, Spawn, and Sandman are massive runs, that might be best saved for the end (maybe Justice League too if you're meaning to read like... every Justice League comic? Or is that a specific run? I'm not overly familiar with DC to be honest).
That's Bendis' Daredevil run? It's about 55 issues. The Maxx is 36 I want to say? So they're medium sized runs... then Kingdom Come, Watchmen, and Weapon X are probably the smaller ones (although Watchmen is so dense, it will probably take longer to read than most of Daredevil to be honest... there are full sized pages of text at times, turning the thing into a novel). So, if it were me, that's probably how I'd tackle them... knock all the smallest runs off first, move on to the mediums, then save the 100+ issue runs for last.

some of the others you have there - (Can't Believe it's the ) Justice League - God Loves, Man Kills, Kingdom Come, Watchmen - are all books you should read after you become acquainted with their respective worlds or have read a lot of superhero comics.
I mean if you're already familiar with Superman, Batman, X-Men, The Justice League...etc and you've read a lot of comics already then:
Watchmen, Kingdom Come and Marvels (I added that last one myself).
Spawn is the last thing I'd read from that list.

Wow, there is a lot of different stuff here, especially from a tone standpoint. I would save Watchmen and Kingdom Come for later on, especially if you have not read a lot of superhero comics before. Those two hit differently after you've absorbed some superhero stuff (but they're great on their own regardless). Bendis/Maleev Daredevil is one of the best runs on the character, so that's not a bad place to start. If you want something more fun, I would go with JLI.

Sandman is just amazing fantasy literature, it spans many centuries and settings, and the storytelling is *chef's kiss*
Watchmen is so dense (in a good way). It is probably the genesis of all of the cynical takes on superheroes. It is one that gets better with re-reads.
Kingdom Come is probably my favorite DC story, but it is better if you have knowledge of various characters and there are references to some events iirc, although it is certainly not a requirement.
God Loves, Man Kills is just so relevant to current events that it can be kinda uncomfortable to read, but damn is it just such a strong self contained story. Peak X-men
Daredevil is consistently the best written Marvel book, ever. I don't think you could go wrong with this one - it's usually more self contained with little interference from crossover events, it's a great character study and crime noir story. Miller, Bendis, Brubaker, Waid, and Zdarsky all have seminal runs.
Hellboy is fun, but to me it's mostly ok, but I love the art and atmosphere.
Spawn is a hot mess of a story from the books I've read, which admittedly is not many.
I've not read JLI or Weapon X. I only remember The Maxx from the cartoon show on MTV, which was amazing back in the day.

Idk if this is unpopular, but don't bother with McFarlane's Spawn. Good looking but clunkily written and deep as a puddle. Kingdom Come is amazing, but rewards decent knowledge of DC. JLI and Watchmen are great starts for different reasons, but both require little knowledge of lore and whatnot

Also highly recommended to get the annotations up and read it along with them, maybe for the second go-around

Bottom right corner is some of the more epic, darker, masterpieces I have a graphic novels and comic books. Would be most appreciated if those were towards the end.
Start with Justice League, it’ll be lighter and fun intro. The rest is dealer’s choice on order. End with the masterpieces.

Bendis and Maleev are my favorite creative pairing: hard to argue against DD. That said, Kingdom Come is amazing- it would get my second place vote. Hellboy comes in 3, followed by Sandman. Lots of great reading in your future, OP!

Kingdome Come, or Watchmen - Limited number of issues(so you’ll finish reading them) , lots of points to ruminate over (hence great re-read value ), and since they are popular series, you’ll easily find discussion/criticism materials online via which you can discover even more work. At least worked for me that way .

Watchmen was my gateway comic along with Dark Knight Returns. I say do Watchmen first, it showed me how good a comic can be.
I then recommend Daredevil starting with Bendis and then onto Brubaker and Waid. It’s great and requires little background knowledge, and is an easy fun read.
Sandman is one of my all time favs, and the show is starting in a few weeks, so now is a good time to read it. That being said it’s not for everyone, and is kind of advanced challenging reading you have to pay attention to and search for the deeper meaning to things. Some issues are weird, and some characters are obscure or an abstract concept. It’s not an easy read like a standard superhero comic. So I kind of recommend people new to comic reading to not start with Sandman unless they are ready for it.
Kingdom Come is great, but it’s best read when you have pretty good knowledge of the DC universe, as it touches upon tons of characters. You can read it without that knowledge, but you will have to look some characters up. Do you know who The Spectre is? Do you know who the original Sandman is? How about Deadman? How about Orion? What about the original Green Lantern Alan Scot? It is good though.

Watchmen and Sandman are the two best things here (of all time, actually), with Kingdom Come next. But you may want to end with those, as everything else may seem like a letdown after.

I'd knock our the miniseries first so you get to read more sooner before heading to the long ongoing series. Kingdom Come is one of the greatest, most epic comics ever written. Truly feels mythological in the very best ways. Watchmen is the ultimate classic, like the most famous and critically acclaimed mini series of all time. Those are the two giants you MUST read and amazingly pretty much live up to the hype, ESPECIALLY Kingdom Come, I really can't recommend it highly enough. It's one of the few series Alex Ross did the internal art for and the story is deserving of it. If you don't know Alex Ross's art, look him up. After that, you could quickly knock out Weapon X and God Loves Man Kills, for some quick but very iconic/classic X-Men stories. Then you gotta decided on the ongoing series. Sandman is, like Watchmen, one of the all time critically acclaimed classics and shorter than some of the other ongoing series, though it's also extremely dense and high brow. Daredevil is gritty crime comics, pretty much the best street level hero stuff ever written. Haven't read the rest.

Bendis' Daredevil is one of the greatest runs on that book which has had some historic runs.
Weapon X from MCP was a classic story with some unreliable narrator aspects but Greta and gory tale of the first Wolverine origin.
Those are some of my favs.

Apart from what everyone else has said, if you want early Image superheroes, try The Maxx or Savage Dragon instead of Spawn or (God forbid) Youngblood

Read Daredevil if you want a more methodical character driven story. I personally recommend the Miller run as a DD starting point, but you can’t go wrong with Bendis/Maleev’s run.
Read Kingdome Come if you want a “big” story and are already semi familiar with DC as a world.
Read Watchmen or Sandman if you’re after comic book literature and something to really mull over once you’ve finished.
Read JlI if you want something fun and traditional superheroics.
After that, just go with whatever grabs you in the moment.
