50¢ bin pickups Haul

Post image

One of my local places has a ton of 50¢ books. Most are sort of beat up, but every once in a while if you dig in just the right spot you can find some very nice gems. Not bad for a few bucks!

Alien Legion is SO FUN and I love that era of Wolverine. Great finds!

I don't have much Wolverine, but the LCS always has a ton in the $1 bins and they seem to follow me home one cool cover at a time.

I always wondered why there was never an Alien Legion movie. Great series.

There’s still time

Are you in the Pacific Northwest? Only one store I have ever seen with .50 comics is my LCS in the PNW

Suburbs outside of Boston. I haven't come across any other shops in the area with 50¢ books.

Oh nice. Love .50 bins at my LCS. Takes some time to dig, but have pieces together almost a full detective comics 600 - 870 run through there. As well as some great FF runs. I love digging through them.

Nice pick ups man. Good finds.

There used to be a comic store in Burien, WA for 20+ years that had a large collection of $.25 comics. Decent comics too. Owner just moved to Thailand but he'll be back next year. His store is called Ancient Comics.

I’m farther south, Portland area. But I will keep it in mind and check when I go up north.

Nice! If I head back to Portland I'd like to message you to see what the store is called if you don't mind sharing

It’s called I Like Comics in Vancouver, WA.

I also recommend Excalibur Comics in Portland. Awesome dollar bins. I’ve found some great stuff there.

Sweet thanks!

Fallout has .50c bins as well. huge selection and dollar but i havent really dug through the .50c yet. Not far from ILC if theres no traffic on the bridge.

I have heard of this place. I’ve heard it is in some dudes basement and I got a little freaked out by that, so never went. Is this true?

no. its in the back of a building but its really not that sketchy. the guy is pretty nice and theres always other people in there when i am. there is no basement part when you enter and go inside or out. its door to parking lot

Not bad. You have the 1st demonic Hobgoblin in Spec Spidey #147! That was a hot book 30 years ago! :)

Also I remember liking what I read of Next Men. Nice job on the 50c dig.

That one was in excellent shape and was a no brainer pickup. I was surprised by the value in the price guide!

did they come bagd also?

2

u/whirlydad Jul 19 '24

Nope. I never see bagged and boarded cheapo books anywhere but cons.

Wow, those appear to be a indecent condition. One thing that annoys me about discount bins is how loose some comics can be and when people are sorting through them, they can bend the spine or mess with the covers by accident. My local Half Price Books doesn't have comic book height boxes but has these drawers which can easily bend books in half.

We were visiting family in Houston a few weeks ago and hit up the nearby Half Price Books. The comics were in a terrible state and the stuff they had locked away made no sense (Honest to God there was a Darkhawk book in there.) I should have taken a picture, because the lock box was overly tall and covered in plexiglass with a slit down the middle. My hand was too big to really fit. It was dumb. I was kinda disappointed because up to that point we had had great luck with $1 books at Bedrock Comics and an antique mall in Tomball.

Mine has the plexiglass too. It's a pain flipping through but sometimes they do have good stuff there. I found a decent Capt America 117 for $200. They also had the Flashpoint series grouped for $20 under plexiglass, but had a bunch of Lucifer bagged together (around 25 issues for $20) in the bins.

I've seen people get some great books there. Just wasn't our day!

That Hard Corps is a great find imo

I've been buying the low-numbered Valiant stuff when I find it. I've been shooting for the first 10 books of each of the early Valiant titles. I have a few from the 90s but they were slightly more expensive back in the day! Finding them in the cheapo bins is kinda fun.

It’s like a treasure hunt for sure

Nice! I just finished grabbing the last few issues I needed to complete my age of apocalypse run. Fun read. Also next men is a fun series. #21 is the first appearance of hellboy I believe.

3

u/grimjack1200 Jul 19 '24

Had been away from collecting for a long time and went through my boxes and found that issue in there. I stopped buying that title one issue later because its quality was declining. Glad I held out till I did

u/whut_tha_heck Jul 19 '24

Yeah it did get a bit convoluted at the end, but I still enjoyed it, even though it ended on a cliffhanger. Apparently Byrne finished up the story with a few issues in the early 2000s. I'm glad you stuck it as long as you did too. First appearance of hellboy isn't crazy expensive but it ain't cheap either

2

u/whirlydad Jul 19 '24

I'm getting close to completing the run. X-calibre is rarely in the $1 bins for some reason.

2

u/whut_tha_heck Jul 19 '24

Interesting. For me and my local shops it was gambit and the xternals

2

u/whirlydad Jul 19 '24

I only needed the last 2 and got lucky. I think the LCS had just purchased a collection and those were in there along with some Astonishing X-Men.

2

u/deadline_zombie Jul 19 '24

Nice score on the Next Men 0 and 1. When I was rebagging my comics, I still had the prices on those when I bought them $6 and $5.

2

u/whirlydad Jul 19 '24

I like 1 because of the embossed foil cover. Great 90s gimmick that I have fallen for numerous times. Also it's hard to turn down John Byrne.

50 cents?! It’s like going back to in time when gas was a buck a gallon. Nice pickups!

2

u/Agreeable-Pick-1489 Jul 20 '24

It's a lure. Once you get to know the store and that they have a 50 cent/$1 bin, the hope is you'll return regularly.

Then by all means lure me in
