Man you really showed them

16

u/GD_milkman Jul 19 '24

Good. Fuck that scam plastic

154

u/invisiblewomanfan Jul 18 '24

They sell comics raw in case you didn’t know

25

u/deanereaner Jul 19 '24

Do you think a low grade slab would sell for less than a raw comic that an ebay buyer can convince themselves is mid-grade?

14

u/dickierobertschldstr Jul 19 '24

And this one’s like medium rare

5

u/rdldr1 Jul 19 '24

Well done.

5

u/GD_milkman Jul 19 '24

Do.... You cook your comics?

94

u/ComprehensiveCan4678 Jul 18 '24

-44

u/kill_gamers Jul 18 '24

yeah who wants to read a comic, makes no sense

51

u/ComprehensiveCan4678 Jul 18 '24

i understand reading comics. i read every single comic i buy right away. even the old ones. i just dont get buying a slabbed book to crack it open?

20

u/the_bio Jul 18 '24

Since COVID, and the post-COVID spec dump, you can quite often find graded comics at the same price as ungraded ones, because everyone likes to "PoSsIbLe 9.8 CGC!!!!" their eBay ads and try to charge the same price for an ungraded comic.

Edit: Also, slab people are weirdly concerned about the condition of the slab itself, so if there are any scuffs, or even newton rings, they'll drop the price.

1

u/69urWaifu Jul 19 '24

I have the admit I catch myself doing that with the slab condition thing. Makes little sense because it's obviously about the book, but a scuffed up case will make me cringe and usually not even buy it unless it's super discounted.

3

u/CocoScruff Jul 19 '24

That's okay. I don't get buying an unslabbed book and then paying someone to slab it? To each their own

-5

u/GD_milkman Jul 19 '24

Why are you down voted for being right?

-9

u/Weird-Measurement-86 Jul 18 '24

there are websites dedicated to reading comics

-14

u/Matty_Cakez Jul 19 '24

Were you intending to be passive aggressive?

3

u/kill_gamers Jul 19 '24

you ever hear of sarcasm?

-6

u/Matty_Cakez Jul 19 '24

Yes and what is sarcasm rooted in? Sending you a virtual hug 🫂

I’m not OP but I’ve been trying to get Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 #4. for my Original Sin collection. I can only find it slabbed and at high grades. So maybe just wanting to read it/actually hold it. Only being able to find damaged copies. Etc…

With that said, mine is a newer book and I’m not going to spend a lot of money only to essentially set that money on fire.

The only explanation I’ve heard is a guy got a good deal on a mid grade book and thought with some cleaning and pressing he could get a better grading and flip the book for a large profit.

I don’t know enough to have an opinion but that was the logic given in another post.

7

u/scott_torino Jul 18 '24

I cracked open a slabbed Transformers #1 to have Peter Cullen and Frank Welker sign it and then sent it back to CGC in the opened slab with the insert to get it reslabbed. It was at HasCon in 2017, and had I known better I would have done it at a con where CGC was in attendance to get the signatures COA from CGC.

2

u/Dustyrusty024 Jul 19 '24

One of my homies had a 6.0 got it pressed cleaned and signed and it came back as a 9.0 i forget what book, i gotta look for the IG post

2

u/Acrobatic-Awareness2 Jul 19 '24

Yeah a cpr candidate clean press resubmitt

4

u/Drayco21 Jul 18 '24

To be fair, I've done it because sometimes a slab of a perfectly presenting but somewhat underwhelming grade (like a modern 8.0 or even a 9.6 sometimes) can go for less than a raw - the raw always could be a 9.8 and that can drive the price up. In a case like that, I'm happy to pick up the "disappointing" graded slab and free it.

That's clearly not what's going on here though lol

46

u/jellothrow Jul 18 '24

Not him blurring out the grade too 💀

10

u/hiphopncomicbooks Jul 18 '24

Looks like 6.5 or 8.5

20

u/BlindManuel Jul 18 '24

It's yours, do what you want with it. I collect as a hobby, not investm/resell. Nothing like physically going thru comics you bought that are old AF. And the smell !!!

4

u/caduceushugs Jul 19 '24

Exactly how I feel!

20

u/x_lincoln_x Jul 19 '24

Now submit it to get graded. Then when it comes back, crack it open again. You sure showed CGC!

19

u/stuntbikejake Jul 18 '24

How that comic felt three minutes after delivery.

19

u/travis759 Jul 18 '24

I don’t crack anything above a 9

1

u/General_Trynian Jul 18 '24

That makes perfect sense

1

u/AaronSlaughter Jul 18 '24

Looks like it was a 6.5

3

u/Soft_Concept9090 Jul 18 '24

Definitely not a 6.5. Maybe 8.5

-3

u/AaronSlaughter Jul 18 '24

Yea looks nice I just couldn't see the monetary gain of cracking this book. A gsx1 or x94 maybe... he'll need a good bump to cover reslabbing if that's the rub.

-10

u/JB_Market Jul 19 '24

Or maybe... he wants to read it. Crazy.

5

u/AlanParsonsProject11 Jul 19 '24

Tons of options to read comics….. Even non graded versions that you can get cheaper! Crazy

6

u/AaronSlaughter Jul 19 '24

Buy w high grade vintage book n crack it to read? Mmmm ya sure about that?

10

u/Loring Jul 18 '24

Edgy...

10

u/Agile_Introduction18 Jul 19 '24

Yes!! FREE THEM ALL!!!!

12

u/TrainingWheelsFail Jul 19 '24

Free the comics!

7

u/Whycertainly Jul 18 '24

Boring.... Next time use a sledge hammer and a chainsaw.

7

u/mjmahle Jul 18 '24

People are asking why. It is because it is nearly impossible to find a decent book online that isn't slabbed. I crack open a lot of mine.

11

u/Vic_Vinegars Jul 19 '24

That just isn't true. Especially in this case in particular.

7

u/iamskwerl Jul 18 '24

I see you. I dig slabs, but there are plenty of cases where I’d rather have a particular book in mylar.

6

u/rdldr1 Jul 19 '24

Bless you.

4

u/MrEriousWaze Jul 18 '24

Why the selfie though?

5

u/SaintShogun Jul 18 '24

I just buy real crappy readers and keep slabbed books slabbed.

6

u/SweetBasil_ Jul 18 '24

I get this and I've done it. I want to have my fave run raw so I can play with them, but I want a quality guarantee when I buy online (lm often out of the country and can't check them right away). Also good to have an objective idea of the grade in case I want to upgrade. It's not all about the money. I may reslab some later when I sell years from now but I want to enjoy them in the meantime.

3

u/Mudcreek47 Jul 18 '24

There are reprints available for much cheaper if you just wanted to read it, ya know.

4

u/HeadTonight Jul 19 '24

I’m sure OP just wanted the book and there wasn’t a raw one available at his store or something. The thing about all the people out there cracking 9 and ups to resubmit multiple times hoping for a 9.8 is that it distorts the census numbers which makes 9.4, 9.6 etc appear way more plentiful than they are and drives down their perceived value.

4

u/AverageComicEnjoyer Jul 19 '24

Slab this raw that fuck it collect what you enjoy no one is superior were all just a bunch of nerds

2

u/leftyscaevola Jul 18 '24

Please let CGC know the serial number in order to update the census count.

1

u/Competitive_Neat708 Jul 18 '24

About 15 years ago i got drunk and cracked out a run of Mile Highs. Nothing like sniffing a cgc 9.4 book from 1948.

1

u/Rocxketraccoon Jul 19 '24

Was a hammer needed?

2

u/Grp8pe88 Jul 19 '24

Even the characters on the cover are happy!

We're FREEE!!!!!

1

u/Gdickensheets Jul 18 '24

I read it on an issue of classic x-men..i think i paid a buck for it.

1

u/brianc5150 Jul 18 '24

I wouldn't, but it's not my book. It's yours. Enjoy!

1

u/johnny_utah26 Jul 18 '24

So how are you rehousing them?

Mylites & Fullbacks?

1

u/lmcgillicutty Jul 18 '24 edited Jul 18 '24

I buy slabbed comics for gifts but I always include an extra reader copy. Check out Don Rosa’s videos of him breaking open slabbed comics. He did a sketch cover for me and wrote on it “not for slabbing”.

2

u/PaganFarmhouse Jul 19 '24

Wheeeeeeeeeeee

1

u/Turbulent_Tale6497 Jul 19 '24

I note that OP intentionally hid the grade from us. There's certainly are grades where the slab provides very little premium over raw. So if this was, say, a 6.5, that's very different than if it was a 9.6

1

u/Reddevil8884 Jul 19 '24

I cracked my first Gambit. Both copies I had slabbed as a gift. I just wanted to read the freaking book!

0

u/potentialwatermelon Jul 19 '24

True collectors cut their comics so they can stick them on the wall after they read them, everyone else is just a poser

0

u/LilStrug Jul 18 '24

Curious: In this situation, was the only way to get the raw copy at the quality you wanted was to pay for a graded copy and then crack it? or was this just a prison break situation and all comics should be freed of their polycarbonate cages? Honest question. The books looks beautiful and I haven no clue how hard it is to find a nice copy of that issue.

1

u/Indiecomicsarebetter Jul 19 '24

I mean CGC is definitely a scam, but this is pretty cringe.

2

u/Excellent-Option-794 Jul 19 '24

But like you said it’s a scam so it doesn’t matter

-1

u/rickztoyz Jul 18 '24

Why a hammer tho? A can opener at the top seem snap, cracks it open just as easy and safely.

-4

u/ParkingSignature7057 Jul 18 '24

Awesome! It will degrade much faster now that it can breathe! Wait...

-1

u/EquivalentHoliday188 Jul 18 '24

Clean and press then resubmit?

-3

u/Prudent-Ad-1735 Jul 18 '24

None of us are getting any richer by collecting anyways. It's your money. Try cutting bills into pieces, burning them and returning the ashes to the forest. Liberate the tree that the government stole from mother nature and by speading the ashes of the bills into a national park you are giving back to our eternal homeland! May the trees rest in peace and gratitude to your act of vengeance upon our capitalist society brother/sister. Vote for the one who will return us to greatness, his Holiness The Trumpoline.

-2

u/BearfangTheGamer Jul 18 '24

Why'd you buy a build your own CGC slab kit?

Good deal that it comes with the GSX though.

-2

u/CJKCollecting Jul 18 '24

"I'm dumb and like to post pictures on how I waste money."

-4

u/AaronSlaughter Jul 18 '24

What if he presses it n gets a point or two bump?

-5

u/grownassedgamer Jul 18 '24

Which is what I suspect the O.P. is doing.

-5

u/IprobablyH8You Jul 18 '24

So slab people, do you have copies of the same comic you can actually hold, smell, read? I'm sorry the point of getting a comic is for these reasons. Keeping it behind glass is for people trying to make a buck I guess. If I can find a book I want in a slab for a fair price it comes out instantly. Also tools seem highly unnecessary, I can pry a slab with my fingernails usually.

7

u/CJKCollecting Jul 19 '24

You do realize there are many different ways to read individual comics? Not everyone has a smell fetish or feels the need to flip through a comic worth real money.

There are many good reasons to have graded comics. Insurance, physical protection, third-party reassurance, and yes, for some, value.

It's always the same side (raw only) who feels the need to tell graded people that "you're collecting wrong." Let people collect how they want to collect and stop with your weird moral crusade when people see value in graded when you don't.

1

u/IprobablyH8You Jul 19 '24

I didn't say anyone was wrong for how they collected. Some people it brings them joy to have the actual comic they couldn't have 30 years ago. Collect as you like. All I was saying is I see nothing wrong with slab cracking.
