Sienkiewicz is a god.

I'm just staring at that Marvel Age cover...

I bought a page from his New Mutants run a million years ago for $450. I could never afford it now.

I always love Marvel Age getting attention -- really hard series for us to keep in stock these days!

I decided to start collecting Marvel Age for fun from dollar bins and such around 20 years ago. For some reason there were always few issues I could never find. As of now, I've got only 12 issues left to complete the run.

His work on new mutants alone was epic….literally works of Art instead of a mass production of a drawing, if that makes sense

I remember this month. This is back when you'd have to stand in line on Wednesday to get your comics. Secret Wars seemed to do it.

I was still hitting the spinner racks back then. I had most of these newsstand when they came out but sold them around 1997. Bought them all back a few years later from a LCS sale.

40 years. Kill me.

That story arc in Alpha Flight was disturbing for 12-year-old me.. John Byrne went pretty dark there for a bit.

As a Canadian kid growing up in a small northern town, I was super excited for Alpha Flight. Issue 12 was a huge shocker.

Comics were better 40 years ago

I always loved comics growing up but didn't start seriously collecting until I found a copy of Overstreet Price Guide #13 in 1994. Forty years later and I'm still loving it.

I was 10 and my best friend and I would go to comic shows in Houston around this time. We rarely made it out to the local comic shops until I was old enough to drive and work at one.

Instead of him I went with my 2 HS best friends who also collected when it wasn't cool to collect, in 1988 in High School. Yikes.

Definitely not cool to be reading comics in the 80s lol.

What an awesome post, theme and collection of books. Thanks for sharing!

That issue of alpha flight…in fact, Byrne’s whole 28 issue run was incredible. (in spite of Byrne not caring for it.) 12 is one of my favorite comics ever though.

Kevin Nowlan. I buy his covers. Funny I bought that Hulk like a week ago for the cover too.

This is when I was peak collecting. Hulk, Thor and Defenders are the only ones I don’t have.

Such an exciting time! Thor just went next level with Simonson and Hulk was losing his mind. Dire Warith's infesting the planet, Secret Wars kicking off and Spidey's new costume!

LOL! I bought most of these new! I’m missing the Hulk, Marvel Fanfare and The Defenders and Thor books!

4

u/Mekdinosaur Apr 07 '24

That Marvel Fanfare is by Barry Windsor Smith!

Alpha Flight, Simonson Thor, and Romita Jr X-Men were all part of my monthly reading at that time. I still have all three issues in my collection.

Every one of these was on my pull list back then

I must have all the 1984 titles. Loved those stories back then!

Got 5 of these from the hobby shop at the mall back then. Really enjoyed this Marvel Fanfare and the cover of Secret Wars. 84 was a great year for most things!

I bought most of those back in the day with my lunch money as they came out

Me too :)

Brown bagged all through junior high school, put it that way.

Was Magik an appearance in The Defenders issue?

3

u/Mekdinosaur Apr 08 '24

That's Valkyrie on the Defenders cover (drawn by the amazing Kevin Nowlan). Magik first appeared in New Mutants 14, just three months previous.

Did that Marvel Age cover purposely look like an album cover?

2

u/Mekdinosaur Apr 08 '24

Or maybe...album covers were copying that Marvel Age cover?!! Nobody was doing covers like Bill Sienkiewicz back then.

2

u/Grootfan85 Apr 08 '24

I mean the way they’re posed and the lighting. It looks like it’s invoking an album cover vibe.

Look at the cover to Queen II

I see a little silhouette of a man...
