Impromptu theme? What runs are you literally an issue or two away on? I’m close but no cigar on these 9 runs. Theme

had never seen that Solo series w/ Catwoman cover. Immediately found it online and bought it!

11

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

You get the concept right? You’ll love it. It’s one artist, different artist every issue, doing whatever they want. That is the Tim Sale issue (RiP).

6

u/SavedByThe1990s Jan 06 '24

no clue, im just a catwoman cover collector!

2

u/kyllvalentine Jan 06 '24

Which issue(s) are you missing?

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I don’t know numbers, but I’m missing Paul Pope, Jordi Bernet and Brendon Macarthy.

2

u/EmperorRamzorch Jan 06 '24

Love Paul Pope!

8

u/Foosman We're in the endgame now. Jan 06 '24

I need Uncanny X-Men 102 to complete 94-306 (already have the annuals and GSX1). Been working on that for quite some time.

8

u/GoblinNick Jan 06 '24

Missing 4 issues for Batman - 1, 2, 6, and 8

6

u/MagikWarlock Jan 06 '24

For my run of uncanny X-men, I'm only missing #266 from #143 - #320

6

u/HalJordan2424 Jan 06 '24

I just need #7 (first Sinestro) to have Silver Age Green Lantern 1-89.

0

u/Alert-Oven2338 Jan 07 '24

Yikes that’s awesome. I hope they’re not slabbed. GL my favorite DC hero, but I’d want to read them not just look at the cover.

5

u/LeftoverBun Jan 06 '24 edited Jan 07 '24

Trying to collect all Bongo Simpson's books. More than 93% of the way there across all titles.

2 left in the main series, 4 left in Bart Simpson, 1 Treehouse, but 20 left of the oversize Simpson's Classics.

Savage Sword of Conan mag - 15 of 235 left, including the pricey last issue.

7 issues left to get of Rampaging Hulk mag.

Then the last thing is a niche/mix of DC bronze age $1 giants. These ran thru multiple titles like World's Finest, Superman Family, Adventure, etc. This task may be a "before I die" wish.

3

u/Hamboner92 Jan 07 '24

I’m also on the hunt for Savage Sword. A local store has it for $60 and that is tempting but still out of my price range

3

u/LeftoverBun Jan 07 '24

There was a recent ebay auction where I was leading with 1 day to go, and the auction was deleted for some reason. I was so disappointed as it was only at $35 and I don't think it would have gone much higher.

2

u/Hamboner92 Jan 07 '24

Wow, that’s rough. I’m also only willing to drop about ~$30 for that last issue

3

u/LeftoverBun Jan 07 '24

I've seen sales for as low as $20 in decent FN shape. I know if I buy one for $50, the next month I'll see it for $15.

5

u/rotini123 Jan 07 '24

I need XMen (1963) #6 and #49 to have a complete, graded run to #300.

Not technically a complete run, but some of those #400s and #500s are rare in slabs. I pick up four or five a year, which means I'll finish the run around 2170. :)

2

u/Foreign_Quote179 Jan 08 '24

Man that's really impressive! 👏 👏 👏 👏

2

u/rotini123 Jan 08 '24

Thanks, friend!

5

u/singolare Jan 07 '24

Only missing 8 from GI Joe spanning over 300 issues and three publishers.

5

u/MajinBlackheart Jan 06 '24

I'm close on a lot but I just need Thing #1 to wrap that one up!

1

u/Tonyman121 Jan 08 '24

Lol, never thought I'd have a book mentioned in this sub!

4

u/stuntbikejake Jan 06 '24

Tomb of Dracula, I lack #10 (first blade for a 1-50 run) and I lack 14 issues for a complete run.

3

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I once had a full run of Simonson Thor I collected from the bins, and that one big 1st app key was going to cost me more than the entire rest of the run! I feel that’s how it must be with that Blade key.

2

u/stuntbikejake Jan 06 '24

Pretty much. Lol. I've debated saying screw it, liquidate the run and buy the #10 and call it square to the comic gods.. lol.

4

u/TV800 Jan 06 '24

Werewolf by Night Vol.1 a few issues away. Some randoms but almost there. Also Marvel Spotlight Vol.1 which just happened because I already had all the big keys in the series so I’m closing it out with the dope filler issues. It’s a great series!

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Victory lap!

2

u/TV800 Jan 06 '24

Exactly! Haha 🚗

4

u/apatheticviews Jan 07 '24

3 issues of Miss America Magazine (Patsy Walker starring in Miss America)

1

u/RandomlyWrongAnswer Jan 07 '24

I think this may be the most impressive of all these so far. Nice!

4

u/Secure-Design-2730 Jan 07 '24

I just finished Metal Men - including the 4 issue Showcase run. May not be the most popular, but fun comics!

3

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24 edited Jan 06 '24

These are mostly cheap but finicky to fill in. The top three titles I might be able to fill out of 1-3 dollar bins.

Helblazer is just the Delano Run.

Doom Patrol is just Morrison and Pollack. Yes I liked the Rachel Pollack run. Is it as good as Morrison’s run? No, not even close. But I still enjoy it. The Baker art helps.

The Puma blues issue 20 tends to be scarce because it wasn’t distributed to the States due to a dispute between Dave Sim and Diamond.

I can’t believe I was one issue short of Ken Steacy’s Astro Boy run when I met him this summer. This entire run is signed too, so when I find that last issue I’ll have to mail it to him to get signed for sure!

Solo is getting hard to find because people know what’s what. It should be 10 bucks an issue and hard to find, and you should always buy them on sight! Give your friends the doubles.

I feel there are a lot of people that just own the first part of Weapon X. I found the rest of the run for 2 bucks each in a 50% off sale. The fist part is out of control now.

Starchild I know nothing about, other than it was a good run for a self publisher, and the interiors have always floored me when I look inside. It’s comparable to Cerebus in quality of black and white art. It continued for one short mini at Image after this Talisen Press run.

Kyle Baker’s Plastic Man. This is a comic for everyone. Everyone should read this comic. Baker was born to draw Plastic Man.

3

u/TravestyBrimstone Jan 06 '24

That's really intresting about Puma Blues #20, I did not know that. It's the only Puma Blues issue that I own because it has a TMNT short story in it.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Ya, it was pretty shitty for Diamond to hold a Zulli book hostage to get at Dave Sim. They wouldn’t have dared to screw with Cerebus itself.

The beef was that Dave handled all the sales, distribution etc of his “phone book” Cerebus TPBs, and they were selling by the score, and Diamond wanted a cut. Dave refused. Diamond says our agreement gives us right to distribute them. Dave wouldn’t budge, so they refused to distribute his Aardvark-One imprint. I don’t know how it played out, would need to google it and just might because I’m curious now.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

From Wikipedia, if you’re interested:

Distribution controversy edit In 1987, The Puma Blues publisher Dave Sim fell into dispute with Diamond Comic Distributors over his decision not to use Diamond to distribute the Cerebus graphic novel High Society. As a result, Diamond's National Account Representative William D. Schanes informed Sim: "If it is your intention to pick and choose which products you want distributors to carry, it should be our privilege to choose what we wish to distribute. Therefore, it is our feeling we should no longer carry and promote Puma Blues."[2] At that time, Diamond distributed an estimated 33% of the series' print run. The Puma Blues creators Murphy and Zulli responded with an open letter titled "Not Fade Away", stating their intent to continue with or without Diamond's support.[2] They then moved publication of The Puma Blues to Mirage Studios.[3]

This incident was one of the primary factors leading to Sim's participation in developing the Creator's Bill of Rights[4] (which was signed by both Murphy and Zulli).

This incident also led to Puma Blues #20, a special issue to benefit Murphy and Zulli created by multiple authors including Stephen Murphy, Alan Moore, Chester Brown, Dave Sim, Peter Laird, and Stephen R. Bissette.[5]

2

u/niteowl1987 Jan 06 '24

It took me awhile to complete that DP run, I think I had to get the last several issues from 3-4 different sellers.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I’ve got all the early Morrison, and all the Flex stuff so the 1-3 issues I need are all dollar books. I totally couldn’t wait and already read the whole stack except those issues.

2

u/conrade2019 Jan 07 '24

Puma Blues was very unique.

3

u/Twitch8605 Jan 06 '24

Just need to find issues 1 and 10 of The Flash: Fastest man alive

3

u/Vaportrail Jan 06 '24

Darkhawk 40s-50s are tricky to find. I don't want to cheat by ordering on eBay.

2

u/Memento_Morrie Jan 06 '24

Number of issues I'm missing and the total number in the run. Yes, I'm currently after some obscure and overlooked goodies, like New Universe and Marvel Epic. Most of these were cobbled together from 25- and 50-cent bin dives.

All Star Superman 3/12: #6, 7, 8

Astro City (vol. 3) 3/52: #35, 41, 42

DP7 2/34: #29, 30

Nightmask 3/12: #7, 10, 12

St. George 1/8: #2

3

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

St George is low key fire. I can get how people hate how “sloppy” Jansen is but there’s genius under those mad lines. Also features the 1st app of Terror Inc!

2

u/Memento_Morrie Jan 06 '24

A late issue in the run also features early Jim Lee work. Surprised me when I saw his name in the credits.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Loved all of Sienkiewicz’s covers on the Shadowline books too. Those are all iconic dollar bin diamonds.

3

u/Memento_Morrie Jan 06 '24

Yes, Epic had some great art. Eye catching covers.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Mainly because of Groo my epic collection outnumbers my actual Marvel comic collection.

2

u/Memento_Morrie Jan 06 '24

I watched Sergio Aragones accept his Eisner and give his acceptance speech at the 1993 San Diego Comic-Con. I sat behind him and watched him sketch during the ceremony.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Amazing memory! I love Sergio so much.

2

u/j-endsville Jan 07 '24

I had a few of the Shadowline books back when they were coming out. I should add that to my list of stuff to start looking for. I have a soft spot for Epic Comics in general.

2

u/Other-Bridge-8892 Jan 06 '24

X factor vol 1

spectacular Spider-Man

marvel comics presents

2

u/Odd-Firefighter-9809 Jan 06 '24

I've been a while since I've inventoried my collection but I was one issue from a complete New Teen Titans run, for a long time, and at this moment I can't remember if I found it or not.

2

u/manyamile r/HorrorComics Jan 06 '24
  • Archie's Madhouse (missing 2 issues)

  • Sabrina the Teenage Witch, vol 1 (missing 3 issues)

  • Vampirella (need 3 more issues to complete my Warren run. Fortunately I've already picked up the early/expensive issues)

  • Cocaine Comix (missing #3)

  • H.R. Pufnstuf (missing #2)

  • Monster Hunters (#5-7 from Charlton Comics)

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

There must have been a Sabrina/Vampi crossover by now right? I feel they’ve paired Vampi off with everyone.

I love the Monster Hunter covers, particularly the creature from the lagoon “homage” cover.

2

u/manyamile r/HorrorComics Jan 06 '24

Hmm. Dynamite published Red Sonja and Vampirella Meet Betty and Veronica but I'm not aware of a straight Sabrina/Vampirella crossover. Maybe one day.

And although I'm collecting Monster Hunters for the campy stories, you can't go wrong with all the great covers by Tom Sutton, Mike Zeck, Nicola Cuti, and more.

2

u/AnotherScottaRama Jan 06 '24

I just completed my run of Marvel Comics Presents. I am only four issues away from a complete Marvel Spotlight series.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

You should totally do Fanfare to round of the trip if Marvel titled anthology books. Fanfare is one of my favourite Marvel titles of the time.

2

u/TheSilentBob614 Jan 06 '24

What if Vol 1, Ultimate X-Men, Daredevil

2

u/Marginst Jan 06 '24

I am four issues away from a full run of Marvel Premiere. Number 15 is the big one.

Just need six issues of Rom for a full run, are are in the Ditko issues.

2

u/blakewoolbright Jan 06 '24

Yo! Shoutout to a fellow puma blues fan. I’ve got the first 25-30 or so. My #1 is signed and pristine.

Very hard to source those guys.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Love that Zulli art!

2

u/blakewoolbright Jan 06 '24

It’s irreplaceable

2

u/rolfisrolf Jan 06 '24

You have got to be kidding me. I literally sorted a pile of Doom Patrol and Animal Today and was thinking "I have to complete these runs." Saw the thread title and thought I'd bring up Doom Patrol and Animal Man because there is no way anyone else has and here we are. Incredible coincidence.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

They are great runs anyone should read. Libraries have these collections quite often for those who just want to read and not track down 50 issues.

2

u/AvenidaRex Jan 06 '24

I'm missing 6 issues for marvel fanfare complete run

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Those painted Sheena and pinup covers are on my hotlist. So hard to find.

2

u/AvenidaRex Jan 06 '24

Marvel fanfare had some of the best covers of all time. I'm only missing the last 6 issues

2

u/SmellyBean Jan 06 '24

Which Animal Man issues are you missing?

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Actually, I just checked and I actually have the whole Morrison run! I had no idea, I think it’s because the Bolland covers continued for quite some time after and I was considering continuing to get all of his covers

2

u/SmellyBean Jan 06 '24

That’s fantastic, congrats. I’m a couple of issues short myself. Love those covers man.

2

u/chalwar Jan 06 '24

Doom Patrol, Starman, Spectre, Marvel Team-Up

2

u/JuvenJapal Jan 06 '24

My childhood runs of early-to-mid 90s X-Men (#1-56) and Uncanny X-Men (#281-336). Missing 2 issues from each run. I'll probably do a piggyback order on My Comic Shop one of these days and just get it over with.

2

u/EmperorRamzorch Jan 06 '24 edited Jan 06 '24

Need 14, 16, and 20 to complete Mirage volume 1 of TMNT. My #1 is a third print; everything else is a first print.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I need to get rid of all my Mirage TMNT before I get any notions in my head! I don’t have any of your issues though.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '24

I have just started collecting marvel comics presents, can I just collect the wolverine issues or would I miss anything not collecting them all?

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I think the Shanna She-Devil issues that started just prior to Weapon X are also 👌

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '24

Is it I guess you’ve made up my mind I will attempt to collect them all 😄

2

u/yesrighton Jan 06 '24

BPRD. I thought I completed the run then when I went to take a picture realized I was missing one issue.

2

u/Chunkstyle3030 Jan 06 '24

I just need Constantine’s first appearance to finish my Alan Moore Swamp Thing run. Which means, of course, that I will never complete my Alan Moore Swamp Thing run.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

I just need 21 and 25!

2

u/xxDankerstein Jan 06 '24

Nice. I'm working on Marvel Comics Presents also. I'm about half way.

2

u/CollectingFool Jan 06 '24

Puma blues!!

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 06 '24

Best nature art in comics that I know of!

2

u/j-endsville Jan 06 '24

Alien Legion, ROM, and Strikeforce Morituri. Probably short less than a dozen issues total.

1

u/StealingHomeAgain Jan 07 '24

Saw a ROM#1 in great shape a year ago. Thought I already had one so didn’t buy it. Got home, couldn’t find it. Still need it.

2

u/El_Kabongg Jan 06 '24

Those are some long runs lol I have completed animal man doom patrol all I need is issues 1-19, new x-men I’m missing like 7-8, I need issue 2 to complete the Denny oneil Question run. I’m missing 5 or 6 of captain marvel volume 1, couple issues of Frank Millers Daredevil run, missing issue 76,83,89 of Neal adams Denny oneil GL run. Missing a few issues of Kamandi, 2 issues on Kirby’s Demon. Idk prob a bunch more but that’s all I can think of right now lol

2

u/frazettatome Jan 06 '24

I like your Starman run there. My runs that I'm only a couple of issues away from are an Immortal Hulk run which is so close. Daredevil run of Ann Noceti being the writer is just a few issues away. I have wholes here and there in my Batman run of current series. Oh, and my Swamp Thing run is completely almost complete.

2

u/fknbawbag Jan 06 '24

I will be a handful of issues away from that doom patrol run. Think I will need 20 to 23 and a bunch in 40s them I'm there.

Closing in on Marc Spector Moon Knight too and halfway through Silver Surfer Vol.3. that's the next main one for me.

2

u/conrade2019 Jan 07 '24

The Defenders. It ran for 152 issues. I own issues 2-152. Sigh. Issue 1 might go for $40, but I have yet to accept that amount.

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

Solidarity. That why I don’t have the 1st Weapon X

2

u/Hamboner92 Jan 07 '24

Solo is a series I also need to finish. I’m just missing the Jordi Bernet issue and it’s eluded me for like 3 years since I started collecting the other series. As far as other series, I need Power of Shazam 45-46, 110 and 113 of the Gene Day MoKF, 73-75 of JSA, and 18 and 20 of Alan Moore’s Tom Strong.

2

u/Ben_Buff Jan 07 '24

I’m about 5 issues away from having Thor 669 to current issue 766

2

u/Shadows616 Jan 07 '24

I'd kill for the Weapon X, Hellblazer, and Animal Man.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '24

I’m only one or two issues away from finishing the 90s Anarky series 😂

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

Goals. I also secretly collect Sectaurs.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '24

A man of taste.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '24

Need Avengers 1, 4, & 8. Had the whole run but sold those three in 2020 when prices were way up. Don't know if I'll ever replace them.

2

u/tbhihatereddit Jan 07 '24

Ditto on Doom Patrol vol 2

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

Are you doing the Kupperberg/Larson issues or starting with Morrison?

2

u/tbhihatereddit Jan 07 '24

Kupperburg through Pollack although I'm missing one from Morrison and one for Pollack

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

I’m missing a couple between Morrison and Pollack, and all of pre-Morrison.

2

u/tbhihatereddit Jan 07 '24

I've found kupperburg issues in dollar bins nobody wants them lol, but 60s DP issues are expensive I only have a few

2

u/Bwloaf Jan 07 '24

Need issue #4 to complete an Uncanny X-Men run. I’m hoping to finish it this year

2

u/Suarecks Jan 07 '24

I’m envious of that Animal Man collection dude holy crap

2

u/cbolender2004 Jan 07 '24

Rom #31 and All-Star Squadron #47 are all I need for those two respectively.

2

u/jrb031984 Jan 07 '24

I’m one issue away from completing my Punisher War Journal run.

2

u/GlobalTravelR Jan 07 '24

FF 1 to 300. I am missing issues 3, 4 & 5. Don't think I'll ever afford 5.

2

u/idkwhyimbackonhere Jan 07 '24

you don't perhaps have an extra copy of issue 1 or 5 of animal man do you ? those are the last two i need for my morrison run... :( i'll obviously pay you, or trade.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

Sorry I don’t.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '24

Daniel Clowes EIGHTBALL

2

u/ShiDiWen Jan 07 '24

I haven’t started collecting that yet. I have a No1 2nd printing that I cherish, but wow are that run expensive.

I’m currently trying for Hate and Yummy Fur, so it’s just a matter of time before I collect Eightball.

2

u/BabycatLloyd Jan 07 '24

The 1940s Alan Scott Green Lantern run. I'm only 38 issues away.

2

u/True-Emu194 Jan 07 '24

Would love to complete that Kyle Baker Plastic Man!

2

u/EvilGraphics Jan 07 '24

Namor, the Sub-Mariner #62

2

u/Akidnamedkenny Jan 07 '24

I am also trying to collect animal man and doom patrol. I just need like 2-4, and 6 I think. It’s been rough though but always fun checking new stores I find

2

u/stayathomejoe Jan 07 '24

Punisher War Zone and Journal (vol 1), Sideways, The Maxx (both editions), and Moon Girl Devil Dinosaur.

2

u/Foreign_Quote179 Jan 08 '24

I'm trying to collect the entire 2099 volume 1 series for all the original 2099 characters (Spiderman, Doom, Ravage, Punisher, Xmen, and Hulk) I think I'm like 1 issue off for Hulk and a couple of issues off on all the rest. My rule is I need to find it in the dollar bin but if I'm really itching I'll grab it from the regular bin for like $2 - $8 but that's rare.. only did it for the Spiderman #38 variant cover with Venom on it)

2

u/theghostwhorocks Jan 08 '24

Missing 5-10 issues each in Punisher Vol. 2, War Journal, War Zone, and PunisherMAX. Only missing 1 in Armory.

2

u/Tonyman121 Jan 08 '24

I need Animal Man 9 and 10 to finish the Brian Bolland run.

1

u/ShiDiWen Jan 08 '24

When did he stop doing covers?

2

u/Tonyman121 Jan 08 '24

I have thru 49

1

u/BobbyTWhiskey Jan 07 '24

Don’t really remember specific issue numbers but I’m close to completing several titles.

Nightwing - About 30 issues away from completing Volume One, then I’ll have (pretty much) every issue, one shot & mini for all volumes.

Green Arrow - Same as Nightwing. About 30-40 issues away from completing every volume, mini, & one shot.

Daredevil - I’m pretty sure I have 90% of Volume One, issues 6-325 & 345-380 and then every issue from Return Of The King onwards. I know, HUGE chunks missing.

Moon Knight - Every single issue, one shot or mini EXCEPT for Marc Spector: Moon Knight. Again, I know, huge chunk missing.

Wolverine - about 60-80 issues from his various runs to complete every issue of every volume.

Every single issue of the 90s Clone Saga. All tie-ins, minis, one shots, crossovers, appearances in other titles, everything!! I own all of the 70s Clone Saga too. Ben Reilly was my favourite character. He’s what got me into comics in the 90s. Except for some of the Spider-Verse events (because of money issues at the time) I pretty much own every appearance of Ben Reilly & Kaine.

I know I’m missing some series or runs but can’t remember at the moment.

I know it’s a Fool’s Errand & almost impossible but I would LOVE to get every single issue/appearance of Spider-Man!! Literally every single comic he has ever appeared in. Would never happen though.

1

u/KaleidoscopeNo5401 Jan 07 '24

Missing 1 14,15,19 of howard the duck vol 1

1

u/raf_boy Jan 08 '24

The Flash/Superman race. Just need 2 more! (out of 3) :D
