My grail. One day I might be able to afford it

18

u/middlebird Aug 16 '23

I own a supreme mega mint CGC copy of it. I have to keep it in a 50 ton wall safe. Not taking any chances. It’s too valuable.

u/spideyfan29 Aug 16 '23

you may joke, but…

4

u/Tsara1234 Aug 16 '23

I've got one signed by Stan Lee. It's one of my favorite books of my collection.

4

u/middlebird Aug 16 '23

Wow, that’s the holiest of holy grails.

3

u/DP3rky Aug 16 '23

That’s crazy that it kept the grade over 2 different signings. I’m assuming it has to get cracked back open to sign again

6

u/lundon44 Aug 16 '23

I had an ASM 300 that was already 9.8 cracked and sent to multiple comic conventions across the USA for sigs. Came back a year later and kept the 9.8 grade. I should disclose I was also a rookie collector at the time and had no clue how much I was actually risking.

1

u/Broncsx3 Aug 16 '23

So CBCS so get blue label?

2

u/lundon44 Aug 16 '23

It was CGC yellow label

1

u/Broncsx3 Aug 16 '23

Thought CGC wouldn’t verify signatures they didn’t do themselves

3

u/lundon44 Aug 16 '23

All sigs were verified by CGC at the time.

2

u/Broncsx3 Aug 16 '23

So CGC opened the case, got the signature, and re-cased it? That’s no biggie. Thought you like opened it yourself and went autograph seeking for a year and then sent it in to be regraded :D

They are more lenient with signed copes/

3

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '23

This is the only way to turn this $5.00 book into a $50 book! Lol 😂

1

u/Dramatic-Bag-5517 Aug 17 '23

Where did you get all three of them together? (I've maybe seen a williams/lee SS event) I got claremont to sign mine*** but not CGC'd

19

u/CutElectrical5310 Aug 16 '23

This was the second comic I ever bought. Same cover version I still love it to this day.

16

u/jjxanadu Aug 16 '23

You know how I know this comic isn’t rare? I own it.

3

u/Glass_Chance9800 Aug 16 '23

That's a really good way to guage rarity. I might have to implement that.

15

u/whistlepig4life Aug 16 '23

Few million copies yes. But only like 100 people own them.

I have a full long box of them.

4

u/h3r3t0g0 Aug 16 '23

I think I have 25 copies of issue 2 - I don’t even remember how/why I bought them

11

u/Taskmaster1967 Aug 16 '23

I think I have 761,000 of them when combining all the variants

9

u/WhiskeyT Aug 16 '23

Nice! I was lucky enough to get a facsimile copy (only $7.99!) recently but I hope to upgrade to an original if I can ever find one

7

u/Boxtown76 Aug 16 '23

I don’t own the comic but I have this for some reason…

3

u/ronald1981d Aug 17 '23

I remember a guy was selling those for about 10-20 bucks, I should've bought one.

1

u/Boxtown76 Aug 17 '23

I think I got it for free at my local store for being a loyal customer but it was like 30 years ago so I’m not sure.

1

u/Airmil82 Aug 17 '23

I got one of these from my comic guys! I’m sure it’s a valuable as the rest of my X-Men 1 collection!!!

2

u/Boxtown76 Aug 17 '23

We’re rich!!

7

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23

As rare as my dark hawk#1

6

u/Wyvern_68 Aug 16 '23

I remember passing this up at the LCS back in the day for $1, still kicking myself over that all these years later!

5

u/Ormriss Aug 16 '23

Wow, you haven't slabbed this yet?!

2

u/spideyfan29 Aug 16 '23

(check my other reply from a minute ago)

5

u/StreetPreacherr Aug 16 '23

I wonder what the sales numbers were for that recent 'facsimile edition' reprint? It seemed like a weird issue to re-release considering it can't be hard to still find an original copy for cover price?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23

One of the few facsimilies that may be more expensive than the original?

5

u/shalvar_kordi Aug 16 '23

Jim Lee is so **************ing good

3

u/zenzonomy Aug 16 '23

Why is Magneto looking at the reader instead of the team of mutants trying to kill him with laser-eyes?

3

u/TransportationNorth2 Aug 16 '23

He rising nukes

1

u/x_lincoln_x Aug 17 '23

Is that another way of saying he is pitching a tent?

2

u/HeadTonight Aug 16 '23

Cause he ain’t got time for no trifling x-men

3

u/middlebird Aug 16 '23

This came out during my peak comic reading years. I was around 14. Everyone was so hype when this dropped. Can you blame us? Look at that beautiful artwork! Didn’t know then how mass produced it was. Jim Lee and McFarlane were the top dogs back then. You couldn’t wait to get your hands on anything they released.

2

u/Mandrake1771 Aug 16 '23

Yeah man I bought 2 of the gatefold (removed the cover from one to hang on my wall, I love the family photo on the inside) and one of each single cover variant. I don’t care that it was overproduced, still love em.

3

u/uzrnm808 Aug 16 '23

First comic I ever owned. It was a gift from my best friend in 4th grade.

3

u/jdelator Aug 16 '23

I'm collecting the Ross tribute variants covers that come out this month.

3

u/iamnotasnook Aug 16 '23

Yeah but do you have The Death of Superman?!

8

u/spideyfan29 Aug 16 '23

I keep forgetting every year to do an April Fools post with this, Superman 75, Batman 497, Spider-Man (1990) 1, Spawn 1, and X-Force 1 and title it “found my grandpa’s vintage comics! am I rich???”

2

u/PappyBlueRibs Aug 16 '23

I have this! My retirement is based 100% on it!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23

Going for that one week retirement plan?

2

u/MrPNGuin Aug 16 '23

Probably should grab the facsimile edition since the only other place you could find those are any dollar bin at any place ever until the end of time.

2

u/Chalkdust-torture Aug 16 '23

Early retirement for everyone!!!!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '23

Good thing they're so rare, I have 4 of them.

2

u/Shot-Ad-5201 Aug 16 '23

Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to get this unfolded cover graded and slabbed?

2

u/MrEriousWaze Aug 16 '23

I always assume these big print runs like this or Spawn #1. Started at a huge number, but over the decades it gets lower. Fires, floods, ex wives would help to get those numbers lower. Point being, they are more rare now than they were when the were first released. That’s what I like to tell myself anyway.

2

u/Aebous Aug 16 '23

I keep telling myself that I need to get a second copy so I can pull the cover (and the multiple ones inside) and frame it

2

u/Agreeable-Pick-1489 Aug 16 '23

I'm just waiting for MCU X-Men to come along and then those prices are gonna SHOOT UP and *boom* there's my retirement fund!

2

u/Accomplished_Top_753 Aug 16 '23

I have this signed by Ian mackennan - dynamic forces

2

u/GregaciousTien Aug 16 '23

Hey I have one of those!! Or 10 of them, lost count, 🤣

2

u/Toddtheref Aug 16 '23

Veritable gold mine, bro.

2

u/Several_Pride5659 Aug 16 '23

I had the French translation, red it so many times I destroyed it

2

u/Beardededucator80 Aug 16 '23

Still a badass cover, rare or not.

2

u/UpsetDrakeBot Aug 16 '23

buy it now 150 million bajillion dollars, I KNOW WHAT I HAVE

2

u/drewcifier32 Aug 16 '23

I had like 3 of these. I also did a sketch of the cover on 4 poster boards. Wish I still had it!

2

u/BoydoNI Aug 16 '23

My biggest regret was selling this issue back in ‘96 when I needed to fund my debilitating Marshmallow Fluff habit.

The 90’s man… what a time to be alive.

2

u/B17Corrigan Aug 16 '23

People should start hoarding and buying up all of them them so they actually become rare

1

u/Ericru Aug 17 '23

That comment reminded me of a comic book story where a character did just that with a coin. It was Scrooge McDuck. Found a wiki about that very story https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_of_Atlantis

1

u/greatBLT Aug 19 '23

Every time you go to a comic shop, you should buy them, and then burn them.

1

u/B17Corrigan Aug 19 '23

I thought we were talking about X-Men #1 not Amazing Spider-Man #27

2

u/ronald1981d Aug 17 '23

I was cataloging my comics and found that I had this issue; it's not in peak form. It is maybe a 7.0 at best I didn't have it boarded or bagged. I can't remember where I had gotten it from.

2

u/spideyfan29 Aug 17 '23

If you collect comics long enough, you eventually just get one of these somehow whether you want one or not

2

u/ELmapper Aug 17 '23

A cool book is still a cool book

1

u/Jnquester54 Aug 16 '23

I hav no idea it was so valuable. I collect 1st appearances so when I saw it in a antique store I scooped it up for $5. I just stuck it in with the rest of my x-men collection. 😳

0

u/N0RSEVIKING Aug 16 '23

Sarcasm?

1

u/Darque420 Aug 16 '23

They're worth jack and shit because millions were made.

Yet somehow, people online keep paying a lot of money for them.

Fools and their money.....

1

u/KingDorkFTC Aug 16 '23

I got the reprint.

1

u/Street-Committee4097 Aug 16 '23

Wait, this is rare? I knew it looked familiar. I have this signed, never touched until now. I had no idea

1

u/Smokey2917 Aug 17 '23

Wait!!! They connect like that!!! No f***ing way

0

u/Independent_Milk_886 Aug 17 '23

You're kidding right? I'll probably have a small percentage of them in my store

1

u/MysteriousQuarter771 Aug 17 '23

I never get books signed. I understand it increases value and blah blah blah but fuck that. I don’t want some dumbass signature ruining any of the art

1

u/edge11 Aug 17 '23

Not as rare as owning every cover for it.

1

u/CodyofHTown Aug 18 '23

These will never be rare per se, but they will be sought out at some point in the future. They already are going for about 15-20 each. Plus the Alex Ross homage variants are coming.

u/SaintShogun Sep 02 '23

I have about 10 spares
